WNCC has held that dubious title since 2004, defeating the Plainswomen in the championship match every time. But a couple of factors point in NJC’s favor this season. First, the Plainswomen have several key players from last year’s team that posted a 20-19 mark. In addition, NJC will host the Region IX South Tournament this season, giving NJC the home court advantage. Sophomores this year are Madison King, outside hitter from Holyoke; Jazmin Montes-Pedrego, defensive specialist from Platte Valley; Yutung Qi, middle hitter from Shenyang, China; Taylor Upchurch, setter from Kiowa; Anais Vargas, outside hitter from University High School in Greeley; Allison Majerus, outside and right side hitter from Mead; Brayden Auer, setter/right side hitter from Scottsbluff, Neb. and Brittney Pepitone, middle hitter from Frederick. Vargas, Montes and Qi are returning starters and Upchurch, Auer and Majerus all saw substantial playing time. This year’s freshman class includes Julia Borges, outside hitter from Nova Petropolis, Brazil; Karli Christensen, setter/right side hitter from Akron; Angelina Garduno, right side hitter from Ellicot; Taylor Hutton, right side hitter from Longview, Wash.; Kayla Kagan, defensive specialist from Elizabeth; Emily Luke, outside hitter from Elizabeth; Danae Michaelis, defensive specialist from Akron; Kyra Mix, middle hitter from Kersey; Lauren Olsen, setter/defensive specialist from Frederick; Carly Orth, outside hitter from Julesburg; Tiawna Smericina, setter from Craig and Amelia Spicer, setter from Bennett. “I think any one of our girls can step up as a starter,” said NJC Coach Jessica Squier, who is entering her fourth year atscoach of the Plainswomen. “We have a really strong returning class and freshman class. I love practices because the girls are so competitive with each other. “I think it’s a possibility it could change every match or set depending on what we need to win.” Squier predicts that one of NJC’s strengths this year is on the attack. “I honestly don’t believe we have a weak hitter,” she observed. “We have so many hitters that hit hard. We are also very strong in serve receive and our offensive mindset. “Our weakest point is defense. We aren’t reading and anticipating quite like I want them to yet. But they will get there.” Squier is a former NJC volleyball star who also attended Julesburg High School and was a big part of two state championship teams. She has a 63-48 record in her three years as coach of the Plainswomen, leading them to the Region IX South Tournament title all three seasons before falling to WNCC. She was also two of the NJC teams that fell to WNCC in the championship matches in 2006 and 2007. As NJC’s head coach, Squier would love to lead the Plainswomen to the Region IX Tourney title and their first trip to the NJCAA National Tournament since 2002. “I would love for us to win the Region IX Tournament at home,” she said. “If we stay healthy I think it’s a great possibility for us to qualify for the Nationals. “We have to overcome a lot of mental toughness to be consistent winners. But I think it’s all very possible.” NJC will open the 2015 season in the Subway Tournament Friday and Saturday in North Platte, Neb.
