By Ken McDowell Sports Editor SIDNEY, NEB. – The Sterling Tiger wrestlers turned in a solid performance Saturday in the Sidney, Neb., Invitational Tournament, placing fourth out of nine teams with 66.5 points. Placing fi rst for the Tigers was sophomore Joel Contreras with a 4-0 mark in the 138 lb. class. Freshman Colby Duncan was a runner-up fi nisher in the 106 lb. class with a 2-1 record. Sophomore Corbin Usry was a second place fi nisher in the 126 lb. class with a 3-1 slate and senior Tristen Whited was second at 170 lbs. with a 3-1 record. Sophomore Jacob Beltran was
third at 113 lbs. with a 1-2 mark and fourth place fi nishers were junior Austin Krier at 132 lbs. with a 103 record and freshman Erick Krier at 145 lbs. with a 2-2 mark. Sophomore Zach Little placed fi fth at 195 lbs. with an 0-4 record. Also competing for the Tigers were freshman Logan Guenzi at 152 lbs. (0-1) and freshman Patrick Holtzhauser at 182 lbs. (1-2). The Tigers will compete in a non-league dual meet Thursday at Wray to close out the 2012 portion of the season. Sterling will resume action after the holiday break Thurs., Jan. 10, 2013 at home against Brush at 6:30 p.m. in the fi rst Patriot League match of the season.

The Northeastern Junior College (NJC) Men’s Basketball team will be hosting two basketball camps on Thurs., Jan. 3, 2013. The fi rst camp has been designated for both boys and girls in grades Pre K-3rd, and will run from 9-11:30 a.m. The second camp has been designed for both boys and girls in grades 4th-8th and will run from 1-3:30 p.m. Each camp will cost $20 respectively. “We are excited to offer these camps to the public,” explains Head Coach Eddie Trenkle. “Members of our team will be reporting back from Christmas Break this day and this will be an wonderful opportunity to ease our
team back in to the basketball mentality. There is nothing better than working with young children and young adults and teaching them the fundamentals of the game of basketball.” Each camper will receive free admission to the NJC Men’s and Women’s games versus North Platte Community College on Tues., Jan. 8, 2013. The Sterling Elks Lodge has set the date for its 41st Annual Hoop Shoot contest. The event will be held on Sat., Jan. 5, 2013 in the auxiliary gym in the Bank of Colorado Events Center on the Northeastern Junior College (NJC) campus. The contest is free and open to all young boys and girls between
the ages of 8 and 13. Sign-up begins at 8 a.m. with the contest to begin at 9 a.m. The winners of each age group at the local contest will compete in the District Finals, also to be held at NJC on Jan. 19. For more information, call Rich Pollman at 522-0223 or email him at [email protected].
