Why train with Active Health Group? Active Health Group have been developing Sports Therapy and massage training courses since 1999, and started running courses in 2000. We developed the UK’s first externally accredited Level 5 Advanced Diploma’s in Sports Therapy and Sport & Remedial Massage, Level 3 Certificate in Myofascial Release and Level 4 Diploma in Exercise Therapy. Our tutors are all experts and practising in their fields. It is a requirement that all our tutors are practising therapists and work in the industry, either in sport, fitness or health. He has an advisory role on GCMT, the governing body in soft tissue therapy and massage, has a role on the Professions Specific Board of the regulatory body CNHC, and is a founder member of the Sports Therapy Organisation, a leading Professional Association, and Sports Therapy Council, the governing body in Sports Therapy. Richard has been involved in the development of new Core Curricula and National Occupational Standards in Sports Massage and Sports Therapy. AHG aims to provide a professional service at an affordable price. To keep course fees minimal we offer a home based learning system combined with a period of practical training. The Open University, one of the top universities in this country, uses this method very successfully. We have our own online learning centre, which our students can access. Qualifications Gained: AHA Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Clinical Sports Therapy Why Sports Therapy? The treatment of sports related problems has grown over recent years, due to the vast increase in leisure activities and the interest in sport and fitness. The demand for a therapist with a wide based knowledge will always find plenty of opportunities to find work. Since the announcement of the London Olympic Games in 2012, Sports Therapists have been in great demand, and its success has led to more people taking up sporting activities, and using the services of a Sports Therapist. Sports treatments vary greatly from sports massage routines to help prevent injuries, maintain suppleness and improve performance, to full treatments using electrotherapy. Sports Therapists are also involved in rehabilitating after injury, and in promoting fitness through exercise. A Sports Therapist is trained to assess common musculo-skeletal problems, and offer treatment for such conditions as whiplash, back pain, Repetitive Strain Injury, frozen shoulder and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, amongst others. Top Up Programme for Sports Therapy
With the minimum level of qualification now required to work in sport at Level 4, we have developed bridging programmes to enable therapists to gain the higher level qualifications without having to complete the full courses.
Level 5 Diploma in Sports Therapy (5 days) This course is available to holders of the BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Sport & Remedial Massage from Jing, LSSM, NLSSM, OSSM or any ISRM school.
Please note, before you book onto a Top-up programme we will need to see the following evidence:
a) Full certificate of qualification at Level 5 from any ISRM school, Jing or NLSSM. We do not accept qualifications from distance learning providers such as Stonebridge, BSY, SNHS etc. We will also need to see evidence of an A&P qualification at Level 3.
b) Evidence of at least 100 hours of clinical practice with 1 years postgraduate experience. (This can be evidenced by CV, references etc).
c) Completed portfolio of course work relating to your qualification (if this is not available, you will have to complete additional home study)
d) Evidence of annual CPD credits in relevant field, ie soft tissue, exercise etc.
e) Evidence of annual Liability Insurance.
A final written and practical assessment will take place.
We would recommend you study Hands On Sports Therapy, by Keith Ward, as this covers most of the subjects.
Due to the nature of this fast track course, you will need previous competency in soft tissue therapy, which would exceed basic massage techniques. There will be a final practical and written assessment at the end of each programme.

Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy
Sports Massage has become increasingly popular in the last 5 years, with more and more people involved in activities such as sport and exercise. Our course has been developed in line with the new National Occupational Standards in Sports Massage, and is the minimum requirement for sports massage work in elite sport. Advanced Soft Tissue Techniques are covered along with postural and injury assessments. Duration: 10 days practical training, plus home study, plus 100 hours case studies. Myofascial Release Training
Myofascial Release is a highly specialised manual therapy technique which works on the connective tissue that surrounds muscle. Fascial restrictions can cause many problems, so it needs to be kept in a healthy condition. Myofascial Release (MFR) is the main technique for freeing up restrictions and can be used to condition the fascia. Active Health Group were the first training provider in the UK to incorporate MFR into our Sports Massage and Therapy courses and were the first company to develop an MFR Diploma and gain external accreditation at Level 4. The ‘Active’ approach to MFR comes from a variety of theories, from Rolfing and Osteopathy to the work of Erik Dalton, Art Riggs, Tom Myers and John Barnes, combined with our own knowledge of Posture, Kinesiology, Sport, Dance and Exercise, to create a unique system of treatment which enables its users to become elite therapists in their field. AHG has spent thousands of hours working with people from a variety of backgrounds, to perfect the skills that are taught in our MFR training courses. Through the work we have done using MFR in professional sport, we have ensured that this is a technique that is highly respected and used at all levels. Whilst many companies teach a version of MFR, which is usually very basic cross handed technique and skin rolling, we have developed a 2 day workshop where you can start making changes with your clients, right up to an 8 day Diploma which is one of our most popular courses! Myofascial Postural Re-alignment Workshop - 2 days practical training

What is the difference between BTEC, ITEC, VTCT and AHG qualifications? Firstly, neither BTEC nor ITEC/VTCT have any Sports Therapy qualifications. They have massage qualifications. The BTEC programme in Sport & Remedial Massage/Soft Tissue Therapy is a customised award, which means that a training provider writes the qualification and BTEC issues the certificate. ITEC & VTCT have QCF qualifications, which means they are on the framework of qualifications and attract funding (which is why they are run mainly from FE Colleges). Whilst BTEC are recognised, they offer qualifications in anything from Nail Technician and Motor Vehicle Student to Pottery, and everything in between! They are non-specific. VTCT and ITEC run holistic, sports and beauty qualifications. Unfortunately due to the nature of the organisations, you could attend one training provider and undertake, for example, a level 4 sports massage course in as little as 4 days, or you could do it over an academic year with another, yet come out with the same qualification! This has led to lots of industry complaints and in our opinion a loss of faith in the qualifications. AHG qualifications are run by AHG only and regardless of the location, you get the course delivered identically. The qualifications are the most widely regarded in the industry, because we are a specialised provider.

Level 6 Educational Criteria
Level 6 qualifications recognise a specialist high level knowledge of an area of work or study to enable the use of
an individual’s own ideas and research in response to complex problems and situations. Learning at this level
involves the achievement of a high level of professional knowledge and is appropriate for people working as
knowledge-based professionals or in professional management positions. Level 6 qualifications are at a level
equivalent to Bachelor's degrees with honours, graduate certificates and graduate diplomas.
Whilst this is a vocational qualification it does require a great deal of higher level learning, including research
methods and dissertation writing, as you would expect with a Degree level qualification.
Entry Requirements:
Candidates should have a Level 4 Sports Massage and Anatomy & Physiology qualification.
For candidates without the relevant qualifications we offer an 'Access course' which will give you the necessary
foundations to be able to undertake this course.
For holders of qualifications such as AHG Level 5 Sports Therapy or BTEC Level 5 in Sport & Remedial Massage (or
equivalent) Accreditation of Prior Learning will be available.
