SPORTY CHAMPIONS EDITORIAL “The five ‘S’ of sports training are: Stamina, speed, strength, skill and spirit; but the greatest of these is spirit” -Ken Doherty Physical Education forms an important part of modern education as physical activity is crucial to the holistic development of children, nurturing their physical,social and emotional health , which is as important as developing their intellectual side. Physical fitness is an important component to leading a healthy lifestyle . The inclusion of regular fitness activities and sports like basketball ,cricket ,aerobics helps students maintain fitness , develop team work. Games, Physical Activities and sports form an integral part of our school curriculum and nurture team work to achieve a common goal. The Aim of the ‘Sporty Champions’ club is to introduce the students to the Indian Traditionl games & sports and develop qualities of team spirit and self discipline in them. The students enthusiastically participated in all the activities organised under the aegis of the club. Palak Sethi (Club Master) ‘Seven Stones (Pithu)’and ‘I Sent a Letter’ With an aim to revive the indigenous games of India, the students were introduced to the games –’Seven Stones’ and ‘I Sent a Letter’ , in the activity organised on 28.4.16. INDOOR GAMES - CARROM BOARD, LUDO AND PICK UP STICKS The students were taught how to play the mentioned indoor games in the activity held on 21.7.16. The rules of the games were explained to them. They were made to play the games in small groups and pairs. The activity was aimed at developing skills like team spirit and self discipline in them.

‘Tug of War’ and ‘Jump with a Rope’

The students were made to play Tug of War and Jump with a Rope on 16.8.16.The classes were divided into groups and the activity aimed at inculcating team spirit and coordination among students.

Kho-Kho The students were introduced to the game Kho-Kho in the activity organised on 29.9.16.

After exposing the students to the rules and method of playing the game, they were divided into two teams and were made to play the game in the field marked as per the requirement of the game. The students enjoyed playing this indigenous game and found the experience very enriching.

‘Hop Scotch’, ‘Marbles’ and ‘Gitte’

In the activity held on 20.10.16., the students were

introduced to the games, Hop Scotch, Marbles and Gitte. The method and rules of the games were explained through demonstration by the teacher. Students were divided into three groups and made to play the games in turns. The activity was thoroughly enjoyed by the students.

‘Kabbadi’, ‘Basketball’(Basics)

In the activity held on 24.11.16, the students learnt to play ‘Kabbadi’ . The field was

marked for the game and the technique of raid was taught to the children. They were divided into teams and each child tried the technique. For Basketball, each child took turns to dribble and shoot the ball into the basket .The students enjoyed the activities very much and learnt the basic skills of both the games.

Tambola The students learnt to play Tambola in the activity organised on 8.12.16. The rules of the game were listed & explained and each student was given a card with different numbers in a grid. Randomly selected numbers were then called out and they marked the numbers off their cards. Different match winning combinations such as early five, top, bottom and middle line and full house were followed and winners were declared. The game was thoroughly enjoyed by the students.

Parents’ Diary

‘Sporty Champions’ was like a back drop to provide qualities of leadership, team spirit, punctuality, self discipline and self confidence in students. Activities of the club were means of healthy recreation and helped in the enhancement of social skills of the students. (Geetanjali Behl M/O Satwik Behl III C)

My Daughter was not a very sporty child , but Sporty Champions has made games very simple and interesting for her. It has helped in developing her mental skills and lead to physical fitness. It has provided a platform for my child’s overall development and growth. (Swati Singhal M/O Kaashvi Singhal II E)

Theoretical knowledge only , is not sufficient for the all-round development of the child. All the sport activities done by our children so for, have contributed a lot in shaping them. The Sporty Club has developed leadership skills in them, along with a sense of sharing and cooperation. They have learnt to work as a team and have developed a sense of loyalty. Indoor Games The students were made to play a variety of indoor games like Ludo, Snakes & Ladder ,Chinese Checkers etc. on 19.1.17. The rules of games were discussed and explained to them and they enjoyed playing the games in group.
