Presidents’ Letter Dear Tobay Members,
Happy New Year -
Shanah Tovah! We hope
your preparations and prayers during the High Holy
Days have provided you with renewed strength and
focus to continue our dedication to Hadassah and all it
stands for. Hadassah: supporting medical innovation
and health care, providing Jewish educational
opportunities, and empowering women. Wow! We do a
lot, don’t we?
As we enter the fall season and put away our
summer accoutrements, we begin to see growing tumult
in the Middle East and rising animosity toward, and
isolation of, our beloved State of Israel. What can we
do? We can continue writing to our Congressional
representatives to remind them of the stability Israel
provides in the Middle East as the ONLY working
democracy in the region, and how important it is for the
United States to support this tiny country – a small
island of civilization in a brutal, tribal, and unpredictable
Middle East. Hadassah and Israel are continuing to
prepare for all contingencies in dealing with growing
violence and an Iran-supported arms race. Hadassah is
continuing to install state-of-the-art trauma/surgical units
in the Ein Kerem Hospital, and our fundraising is
helping!
Our Tobay Chapter had a terrific time at our
September general meeting, when “The Players”
from the Mental Health Assn. of Nassau
performed. The vignettes were acted out with
emotion and humor, addressing the family issues
dealing with aging parents. If you haven’t had the
opportunity to see this troupe, look them up online
and find out when they are performing again; it’s
worth it!
Our annual Sukkot outing was quite memorable –
especially since it rained hard all day! We couldn’t sit in
Lisa Hadar’s sukkah as planned, but we had a delicious
brunch, sing-along, and Davar Torah about the Lulav
and Etrog. Then we carpooled to the Sands Point
Preserve where we had a lovely tour of the Castle
Gould, and everyone had a fabulous (if not soggy) time.
Rosa Gitlitz, you are amazing! Each year, you continue
to put together our Sukkah program, making it so
meaningful and educational. Thank you. Of course, we
couldn’t do it without Lisa Hadar, who graciously opened
her beautiful home and Sukkah to all. Thanks, Lisa!
At press time we are anxiously looking forward to
Tobay's Membership Luncheon and Fashion Show! In
the past we’ve had our Membership Dinner during the
week, and at night, which was difficult for so many of us
to attend. So our Executive Board heard you, and
arranged a daytime, weekend luncheon in lieu of the
yearly dinner this year. Let us know what you think.
These next few months offer each life member the
opportunity to invite our friends and family to a free one-
year membership to Hadassah! Call Marcia November
at 631-659-3196 for the simple way to bring your friends
and family into our wonderful Tobay Hadassah
community. Did we say “FREE?” Who doesn’t love
something free? We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events and programs.

Why Israelis are Fearing a
Third Intifada First it was clashes on the Temple Mount. Then a mother and
father were shot before the eyes of their four children. Then two
men were killed in a stabbing attack in Jerusalem’s Old City.
Now Israelis fear the wave of conflict will only rise. Here’s why
the violence began, how it’s escalated and what could come next.
The slow-burning Israeli-Palestinian conflict flamed up with
a series of terrorist attacks. On Thursday night, militants from the
Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades — the armed wing of Palestinian
Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party — shot and
killed a young Jewish-Israeli husband and wife, Rabbi Eitam and
Naama Henkin.
At the time, the Henkins, both in their early 30s, were driving
through the northern West Bank to their home in the settlement of
Neria. The couple’s four children, ages 4 months to 9 years, were
in the car and witnessed the attack. They were lightly wounded
and evacuated to a hospital.
Two days later, after Shabbat ended, a terrorist killed two
rabbis in the Old City of Jerusalem. Aharon Bennett, a 22-year-
old Israeli soldier, was on the way to the Western Wall when he,
his wife and their two sons were attacked. He was off duty and
out of uniform. His wife, Adele, 21, was seriously wounded and
underwent emergency surgery.
The second victim, Nehemia Lavi, 41, was stabbed and killed
when he tried to fend off the terrorist with a gun. Police shot and
killed the terrorist, a 19-year-old law student.And on Oct. 23, a
family of five suffered various degrees of burns after a
firebombing attack, with the youngest victim: a 4-year-old girl,
reportedly in moderate condition.
Tensions have been high over conflict at the Temple Mount.
There have been weeks of tension over access to Jerusalem’s
Temple Mount, the holy site known to Muslims as Haram al-
Sharif, or the Noble Sanctuary. The Temple Mount is believed by
Jews to be the location of the Holy of Holies. Israel barred a
violent Islamic protest group from the Mount in early September,
setting off demonstrations, stone throwing and arrests, and
leaving one dead and dozens injured. Hours before Rosh
Hashanah, Israeli police uncovered a stockpile of pipe bombs,
firebombs and rocks that they feared would be aimed at Jewish
worshippers.
In the unrest’s wake, Israel heightened police presence in
Jerusalem’s Old City, and has sent police patrols to investigate
neighborhoods in east Jerusalem. The government also passed a
law that allows police to fire more quickly on Palestinian stone
throwers, as well as increasing prison sentences and fines on the
stone throwers.
Rhetoric around the Temple Mount remains tense. Arab
Knesset member Jamal Zahalka was shown in a video shouting
epithets at Jewish visitors to the Mount. And in dueling
speeches to the United Nations last week, Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President
Mahmoud Abbas each accused the other side of upsetting the
delicate balance at the site.
In response, Israeli leaders are talking tough and clamping
down.
Israeli rhetoric has intensified following the attacks. Netanyahu
has called for a hard line against the violence, responding to right
-wing Jerusalem protesters who called for more forceful action
against terrorism.
“We have directed the police and other security forces to deal
aggressively with these phenomena,” Netanyahu said in a
statement Tuesday. “We cannot accept a repetition of these
events anywhere in the world, certainly not in Israel’s capital. We
also demand very sharp action against incitement.”
Abbas has also directed his security forces to clamp down on
terrorism. In an interview with Haaretz, he rejected Netanyahu’s
claim that he is inciting violence against Israelis. Instead he
accused Israel of “aggression” on the Temple Mount.
Kerry’s visit The threat of more violence resulted in the recent
visit by US Secretary of State John Kerry. Kerry persuaded
Netanyahu to install round-the-clock video cameras on the Mount
which should clarify who is doing the “incitement.” But he also
used threatening language in a joint interview with Israel’s
Channel 2 and a Palestinian news outlet. He stated that if current peace talks fail, Israel could see a third intifada and
growing international isolation, and that calls for boycott,
divestment and sanctions would increase. He stressed the
American position that ongoing settlement construction must
stop.
But this has happened before — only to fade. But though violence has risen recently, it won’t necessarily worsen. Previous bouts have made Israelis concerned about an intifada, only to wane after a few weeks. Last year saw a string of terrorist attacks in Jerusalem that did not spark wider unrest. And a wave of riots across the West Bank, prompted by the death of a Palestinian detainee in Israeli custody, led to the same fears in
2013, but the protests fizzled.
This article was adapted from a Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) column by Ben Sales. Updating was added from various Israeli
sources.

DeBlasio’s Israel Visit
New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio visited Jerusalem in
October, his fourth trip to Israel and his first as mayor. He
discussed the spirit of solidarity and “common destiny” at
Hadassah Ein Kerem between the citizens of Jerusalem and New
York City. In this spirit DeBlasio and Jerusalem’s Mayor Nir
Barkat had a joint press conference at the hospital to solidify
relations between the two cities. “Let me thank Hadassah
Hospital; the stories I have heard, in the midst of this pain, are
inspiring and somehow life-affirming.”
While meeting with Arab, Jewish and Palestinian
students who study together, DeBlasio stressed the need for
peace. “It’s a painful moment here in Israel. It’s a moment where
certainly I’m here in solidarity with the people of Israel. But at the
same time we have to think of every way to support those who
are trying to move things forward‒and look to a day when there is
greater understanding.”
He arrived at a time when the nation is facing a
whirlwind of violence. There have been more than two dozen
attacks. DeBlasio met students and parents from the Hand to
Hand school. Hand to Hand brings Jewish, Arab and Palestinian
students together where their education is usually separate. They
said that until reaching this school they never had friends who
were across different cultural lines. They are sitting and breaking
bread together. These kids growing up together are unafraid and
learn to respect one another.
(Interestingly enough DeBlasio met the students at an olive
grove, encouraging peace.)

The Mental Health Players On September 24 Tobay Hadassah had our first general
meeting for the new year at the Plainview-Old Bethpage
library.
We were entertained with three vignettes by the Mental
Health Players of Nassau County. The topics were very
relevant to our members: sex and the senior, taking the car
keys away from grandma, and how much grandma should
help their grand kids financially. These three vignettes were
very humorous and also very insightful. There was open
discussion with the players after each skit.
We had over 45 people in attendance. Light refreshments
and coffee ended our very successful opening program.
