other clothing. We want our consignment clients and our shoppers to leave our store happy and content. We work with our clients to make sure they are pleased with their consignment, and we help our shoppers to look their best with style and brand preference in mind.”By focusing on big names in fashion, Plummer says the store brings the big city to downtown Fairhope. “We love living on the Eastern Shore, but with no Saks Fifth Avenue or Neiman Marcus around the corner, sometimes it is hard to find that name brand we all want, especially for a decent price. I believe we can bring those brands to our town and for the right price.”

For their consignment clients, Plummer says they are always looking for gently used boutique and designer clothing, purses, shoes, accessories, and formals. “We specialize in high-end handbags like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Prada, etc. With formals, we look for brands like Sherri Hill, Tony Bowls, Flirt by Maggie Sottero, and other boutique-level brands.” The store’s first Mardi Gras season was a big hit. “We were extremely busy for Mardi Gras with shoppers from all over South Alabama because of our great selection of designer cocktail dresses and gowns. I hope all the readers keep us in mind when consigning and shopping for any formal occasion like Mardi Gras, prom, or homecoming.” Plummer says she is happy to be part of the business community on the Eastern Shore. “This is a great place to be in business, and I’m very excited to be featured in the Eastern Shore Chamber newsletter. I look forward to getting to know the many other Chamber members.” Back on the Rack is located at 407 Fairhope Avenue, Fairhope. 64th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival in

Fairhope

March 18, 19 & 20Friday & Saturday: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Sunday: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Charming Fairhope provides Breathtaking Backdrop for the 64th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival

You definitely want to make your way to the Eastern Shore March 18, 19 and 20 for the 64th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival in breathtaking downtown Fairhope. Not only does the city drip with historic charm, this prestigious juried art show is one of the oldest in the state, and gives the mosttalented creative minds a beautiful backdrop to display their work.

On any given weekday, Fairhope’s vibrant downtown is bustling with visitors and residents breathing in the inspiring scenery, enjoying a gourmet meal on a sidewalk cafe table, and poking their heads into the many antique shops and boutiques to find that perfect little treasure. But on the third weekend of March, the oak-lined streets come alive with a flourish of energy as artists and craftsmen from across the country display their favorite pieces.

This is one arts festival steeped in tradition. It got its start in 1952 as an arts and crafts tour, with displays and demonstrations set up in store windows. Although some items were sold, the majority of the tour was only meant for viewing. The artists have since moved to booths lining the streets and those same storefronts are now home to thriving small businesses who welcome the festival’s visitors with open arms and southern hospitality.

The Annual Arts and Crafts Festival has also grown exponentially since the early days. Many of its visitors get their first taste, and then return the following year with their sorority sisters, their bridge group or their shopping buddies. In fact, so many people now attend; the crowds outnumber both Bryant-Denny and Jordan-Hare stadiums during home football games.

If you’re looking to find a true masterpiece to trim your mantle, you’ll be sure to spot a piece you’ll love amongst the collections on display. You’ll discover some paintings that are distinctly Eastern Shore, with scenes of Mobile Bay showing off the area’s true coastal allure.

Page 4: SPOTLIGHT: Back on the Rack Now Open in Fairhopefiles.ctctcdn.com/4ce9e12f001/1c003709-9c81-4053-960b-9d...specialize in high-end handbags like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Prada, etc. With

There is handcrafted jewelry you won’t be able to find in any store, beautifully crafted glassware and pottery, and metalwork that blurs the lines between rustic and elegance.

Even the food sold along the brick-paved sidewalks is considered a work of art. You’ll find specialty candies made from old, treasured family recipes and gourmet popsicles made with fresh ingredients from local farms. Doesn’t a banana pudding popsicle sound like the perfect treat to melt away the warm spring afternoon.

The Annual Arts and Crafts Festival has something for every member of the family. There’s even a Kids Art Corner to help your budding artists channel their creative side with several different artistic projects. Another special treat, Bricks 4 Kidz offers a hands-on Lego experience.

You also want to make sure you take the kids by to see the puppet farm. You’re going to want to hear the giggles and laughter as an artisan demonstrates how his furry friends come to life. You’ll probably want to take a few of the homemade toys home with you.

Although entertainment has been an Arts and Crafts festival staple from the beginning, this year’s guests will be treated to an all new music experience with a Music Jamboree Saturday night. Pack your lawn chair to rock away the evening with Rondale and the Kit Katz under the starry sky at the Halstead Amphitheater on the Faulkner State Campus in Fairhope.

Want to know my suggestions for planning the perfect Arts and Crafts Festival weekend getaway?

Book a cozy cottage overlooking the bay or an inviting hotel in downtown. It’ll serve as a welcome retreat after a day filled with fun.

Parking is limited in downtown but lucky for you, shuttles run from many of the various shopping centers in town. I always seem to make a new friend as we share a seat. You may want to even leave the car parked in the driveway and take a bike instead. They

Page 5: SPOTLIGHT: Back on the Rack Now Open in Fairhopefiles.ctctcdn.com/4ce9e12f001/1c003709-9c81-4053-960b-9d...specialize in high-end handbags like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Prada, etc. With

actually offer free valet parking for bicycles behind the Fairhope Museum of History.

Give yourself plenty of time to visit each artist. You will you see the most stunning coastal settings, wildlife, and flowers come to life on canvas. Each piece has a story that goes far beyond the paint that hits the paper.

Once the iconic clock in downtown strikes noon, take a seat at the nearest bistro table and let one of Fairhope’s talented chefs serve you a savory southern meal that will leave both your belly and heart full. The restaurants lining the downtown streets are a festival of flavor all their own.

When the afternoon starts to heat up, grab a cold glass of lemonade as you warm your shoulders in the sunshine next to one of the numerous flower beds that seem to have bloomed the day before, just so you can enjoy this very moment. Even the trash cans are topped with a burst of bright spring flora.Take advantage of the concert Saturday night. It’ll certainly provide a lively way to top off your evening.

Spend your Sunday shopping in all the little boutiques who call the historic architecture of Fairhope home. The merchants are sure to offer some eclectic finds with a distinctively Fairhope flair.

Don’t let the weekend slip away without taking in the magnificent sunset over Mobile Bay from Fairhope’s iconic pier just a few blocks away from downtown. Sink your toes into the sand as you watch the sun paint warm splashes of oranges, yellows and pinks across the evening sky. You’llquickly understand how the local artists can be so easily inspired.

The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce has made it easy for you to plan your weekend getaway to this charming city for a few days of relaxation, art, food and friendship. The festival website answers all your questions and even gives you links to help you book your stay. If you have any questions while you’re here, feel free to stop by the information booth. You’ll be sure to find a smiling face and a southern accent willing to point you in the right direction.

I can’t wait to see you at the 64th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival in Fairhope.

Poster Art Showcases Orange Street PierThis year’s Arts and Crafts Festival poster art features the Orange Street Pier in Fairhope by Daphne artist Jean-Marie McDonnell.

The coastal colors on this eye-catching painting were unveiled in February during the Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours at Manci’s Antique Club. “I felt like it just had a little bit of a modern edge to it. I really really loved the colors and the feel and I just thought it represented the Eastern Shore Coast with the water and the bay and the piers and everything. It just drew me in and I just thought, this is the one,” said Arts and Crafts Festival Chairman Laura English.

The painting is featured on promotional posters throughout the Gulf Coast. “I’m ecstatic. As an artist this is a top honor that the Chamber of Commerce could give me,” said McDonnell.

McDonnell is from Daphne and currently displays her work at the Garage Studio in Point Clear. “I just like to get in and mess with the paint on a big canvas. I like color. I like geometric shapes. The process is what’s important, even more than the outcome, it’s the process of painting that’s fun for me and inspiring,” said McDonnell.

Many locals regard these posters as a sought after collectible. Signed posters can be purchased for $15 at the Fairhope Chamber Office. Prints can be purchased for $20. Unsigned posters are also available to promote the festival. Click the image above to watch the unveiling

Thank you to our Arts & Crafts Festival Sponsors:

Patrons Award ProgramThere are many ways Arts and Crafts Festival exhibitors are honored, including the Awards Dinner, where prize money is given to the best of the best. But many would argue the most coveted honor is when visitors visit their booth, and purchase their works.

The Patrons Award Program allows businesses or individuals to honor their favorite artists and craftsmen by committing to purchase at least $100 worth of arts or crafts from one vendor.

That exhibitor is then awarded with a ribbon and a placard with the business’s name on it that will be placed in their booth throughout the festival.

Patrons may purchase works from any vendor they choose. All the money goes directly to the artist. When more patrons commit, more money is guaranteed to be spent at the festival.

You can still sign up to become a patron. Click here to open the registration form.

Volunteers Make Festival a SuccessThe 64th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival would not be possible without the hardworking volunteers who commit their time and energy to this prestigious juried show each year. “The members of this committee are amazing – so many of them have been on the committee for years and now their children are on it so it makes for a really close group of people that are all passionate about making every years show the best one ever,” said Festival Chairman Laura English.

More than 100 volunteers, representing service clubs, chamber businesses and individuals participate in the event. “The success of the festival hinges on the dedication and extensive involvement of every committee that makes up the arts and crafts committee,” said Liz Roberts, Director of Tourism and Special Events for the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, “There’s no job that’s too small. Every part is important.”

“They go above and beyond to showcase the Festival and Fairhope.  Sounds cliché, but it couldn’t be done without them.  It is an honor to work with and learn from them all,” said English.

Best Crab Cakes on the Eastern Shoreby Heiko EinfeldWe are excited to continue our exploration along the Eastern Shore of the wondrous delectable delights served up by some of the best restaurants and chefs anywhere. You can’t live along the Gulf Coast without experiencing some of the best fresh local seafood one can find.

With so many options to choose from, it was hard to select what our seafood focus this year would be. As we looked at our memberships menus it was clear that there was an amazing variety of seafood items prepared any way you can imagine. We settled on Crab Cakes because they were being served both as appetizers or entrées.

As we begin our second year with our cuisine campaign we will continue our membership roundtable where we discuss chamber and area topics. These discussions truly help the Chamber in an assortment of ways. We encourage all our membership to participate.

This year our first stop will be Ed’s Seafood Shed, Wednesday, March 23rd, 2016, at 5:30pm. Come join us as we explore some of the great seafood along the Eastern Shore.
