LE LT LG C RG RT RE QB LH RH FB INDIANA Douglas Ferry Ralph Poehls Don Croftcheck Joe Grubish Melvin Branch Robert Gergely Dick Wervey Dick Badar Trent Walters Doug Spicer Tom Nowatzke Grid Showdown Time The Spartans have reached the crossroads. Before them stretch the hopes of a winning season, a high finish in the Big Ten race—even the state championship of Indiana. Half of MSU’s remaining foes are from the state of Indiana (Indiana, Purdue, and Notre Dame) so the Spartans should become a household word in Hoosierland before the end of the season. Spartan fans realize that Saturday’s contest with the Indiana Hoosiers may determine the fate of the squad for the rest of the season. With a win, loss, and tie in three games, MSU has reached the point when it’s tim e to go either up or down. There are still six contests remaining on the schedule and five are Big Ten games. The other is a non-conference tilt with Notre Dame which w ill do nothing to alleviate the tensions of late- season competition. With the Big Ten race wide-open this year, each one of the re - maining five conference outings promises to be crucial. After the Indiana game. Northwestern, a pre-season Big Ten favorite w ill be the MSU opposition. MSU has lost the game following the Indiana contest for the past five years. There will be no relief for the rest of the campaign with Wis- consin, Purdue, Notre Dame, and Illinois supplying the opposition. The Spartans will cope with the situation with a team plagued by injuries that have been partially offset with some pleasant surprises. The fate of the Spartans may well rest in the hands of injured performers Dewey Lincoln, Ron Rubick, Steve M ellinger, Don Japinga, and Matt Snorton. It will also hinge on the ability of Steve Juday, Harry Ammon, Roger Lopes, and Dick Gordon, who have come out of nowhere to aid the MSU cause so far this season. The road ahead is long. It looks difficult— but interesting.
