We are pleased to invite your participation in Earth Train’s

Spotlight on Biocultural Leadership with Jane Goodall. The

goal of this multifaceted program is to introduce all that Earth

Train and our partner organizations are doing to foster a new

relationship between humankind and nature, one encapsulated

in the phrase biocultural leadership, that is the act of creating

civilization in harmony with nature enriched with biological and

cultural diversity.

These are the stories of children and youth coaching and

inspiring both peers and adults worldwide. We invite your

participation in celebrating the stories of children, youth and

mentors in a small country showing the courage to take action

toward creating a healthy world. These are the stories of

emerging biocultural leaders benefiting from the wisdom of

elders such as Dakota Chief Phil Lane, Jr. while displaying a

level of dedication modeled by Jane Goodall and a degree of

excellence and bold originality exemplified by Frank Gehry.

These are the stories of children and youth coaching and

inspiring both peers and adults worldwide.

Earth Train’s Spotlight on Biocultural Leadership with Jane Goodall: Introducing five events.

Here briefly summarized are five events over three days in November that launch Earth Train’s Center for Biocultural Leadership, pioneering long-term conservation programs, and building up to the formal dedication of the Frank Gehry-designed Biomuseo.

These events build on The First Latin American/Caribbean Rainforest Leadership Conference for Jane Goodall´s Roots & Shoots Youth and Mentors that Earth Train produced in November of 2011 for Jane Goodall and 40 Roots & Shoots leaders from 12 countries. It was held at Earth Train’s Centro Mamoní at the Mamoní Valley Preserve with a concluding event at the City of Knowledge directed by Danilo Pérez. The program was documented by the film maker Pituka Ortega Heilbron with a crew of award winning film makers.

Reconnecting the

Condor and the

Eagle Peoples of the

Americas. The Ateneo, City of Knowledge, Wednesday, November 13

With Dakota Chief Phil Lane, Jr. as chief of ceremonies, native elders and youth leaders of Panama’s indigenous tribes, and their peers from nations north and south welcoming Jane Goodall with an evening of story telling, ceremonial dance and music. The program will include a speech and conversation with Jane Goodall.

The prophecy of the Reunion of the Condor and the Eagle is retold by many Indigenous Nations and Peoples. The Q’ero People’s prophecies, for instance, say that when the Eagle of the North and the Condor of the South fly together, the Peoples of Mother Earth will awaken. They say that the Eagles of the North cannot be free without the Condors of the South.

All of these ancient prophecies predict, after a long and bitter spiritual wintertime, that the “Reunion of the Condor (Indigenous Peoples of the South), and the Eagle, (Indigenous Peoples of the North),” will be realized. It is promised that when the Reunion of the Condor and Eagle is fully realized, a great era of peace, well-being and prosperity will follow for all members of the Human Family.

On November 14th, 2013, Earth Train Foundation, Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, and the Biomuseo are teaming up to present Panama is Our Museum: A Biocultural Exchange with Dr. Jane Goodall, a dedication build-up event at the Frank Gehry designed Biomuseo at the Pacific entrance to the inter oceanic canal in Panama.

Combining Frank Gehry’s bold design and state-of-the-art displays, the Biomuseo brings Panama’s natural and geological history to life. During this occasion, Jane Goodall, Alfredo Hidrovo with Luna Llena de Tambores, Roba Morena, violinist Graciela Núñez, and several accomplished international artists will be welcoming 100 children and youth from a diversity of Panamanian grassroots organizations as they bring their stories, their local natural history, to the Biomuseo. Inspired by the Biomuseo as a symbol of excellence and originality, they’re bringing their stories to life through music and the arts to be shared among themselves and, via video production and the internet, with their peers around the world.

Panama Is Our Museum launches Earth Train’s collaboration with the Biomuseo in support of the museum’s mission of getting Panamanians and visitors to take advantage of all of the natural and cultural wonders and learning opportunities that Panama has to offer. In addition to developing training programs for young Biomuseo guides and docents, Earth Train will be creating workshops for schools and grassroots NGO that wish to create high quality Biomuseo audio-visual displays in their communities that present the natural, cultural and historic features of their areas. The workshops will include training and assistance in the production of oral histories and short documentaries with high production standards.

Junglewood Gala Picnic at the biomuseo

Much like the inaugural “hardhat Junglewood gala” that Earth Train and jazz musician Danilo Pérez directed in 2009, the Junglewood picnic in the grand Atrium of the Biomuseo -the Gehry forest of rising and branching beams- will fuse nature with informal and playful artistic creativity. The event will be catered by students of the Panama International Hotel School under the direction of the internationally renowned chef Francisco Castro. It will feature nature-inspired and audience-engaging performances by world renowned musicians involved with the Junglewood program of music and nature including guitarist Julian Lage; the percussionist Tupac Mantilla; flamenco guitarist Juanito Pascual; and Fundación Danilo Pérez will present original compositions directed by the violinist Graciela Núñez and inspired by this year’s Junglewood music camps at Earth Train’s Mamoní Valley Preserve. The program is being directed by the musician and composer Shea Welsh, the Executive Director of Junglewood.

Junglewood promises to be an ecological launching pad, an example of the fusion and integration between the immensity of nature and the power of artistic creativity.Panorama, February, 2010

In January of 2010, when the Frank Gehry-designed Biomuseo was still a hard-hat construction area, Earth Train and Grammy-awarding musician Danilo Pérez took the audacious step of creating the first social and musical event ever to take place in this now iconic building. The program, directed by the Panama Jazz Festival, involved several Grammy-award winning musicians, the Global Jazz Institute of the Berklee College of Music and several local musicians. The occasion was the launch of Junglewood, an Earth Train and Danilo Pérez collaboration celebrating nature and artistic creativity.

Video recorded by International Film Festival of Panama director Pituka Ortega Heilbron, the Junglewood gala was heralded by CNN reporter Alan Duke, COPA’s Panorama Magazine and other popular media as “one of Panama’s most memorable and original social events”.

Go Wild! con Jane Goodall is an Earth Train/Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots project-based learning program offering children and youth a taste of ‘real world’ wild animal conservation and welfare work. The Go Wild! team provides guidelines and coaching to groups of students developing an educational project involving Panamanian wild animal conservation. Students are creating projects based on UNESCO’s goals for environmental education and outreach programs that aim at raising awareness, increasing knowledge, and modifying attitudes and behaviors in creative forms of their choosing including video documentaries, educational games, storybooks, and campaigns.

Contest winners will enjoy a private relaxed gathering with Dr. Jane Goodall hosted by the Metropolitan School of Panama, where Jane will talk about her experiences, feelings and beliefs regarding wild animals, their conservation, and their wellbeing. Participants will be invited to share their own feelings, thoughts and experiences, as well as to openly ask questions. At the end of the session, each participant will receive a signed Certificate of Accomplishment from Dr. Jane Goodall, and a few other surprises.

The Go Wild! team is also helping students reach a larger audience putting them in a leadership role in creating popular awareness while enrolling their peers in taking positive action toward wild animal conservation and wellbeing in Panama. Student project promotion will take various forms, including interviews and features in popular media. In that regard, Earth Train is collaborating with La Prensa’s APRENDO, Panama’s highest rated Sunday newspaper magazine for children, Panamanian environmentalist and activist Roba Morena, Dawn Publications, the publisher of prize winning children’s literature related to nature, and several other bioculturally-minded NGO.

This is the launch of Earth Train / Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Go Wild! program which year after year will bring children and youth closer to wild animals, and through fun educational contests and activities help future wildlife leaders expand their knowledge, develop their creativity, and reach peers and adults in Panama and abroad.

The Go Wild! con Jane Goodall bilingual Facebook page www.facebook.com/ConcursoGoWildPanama is the spot where children and youth can learn about Jane Goodall, animal welfare, biodiversity conservation, and Panama’s wild animals, and see features on this years’ winners and their projects. This page will serve as an ongoing and growing platform to our wildlife conservation and wellbeing educational programs and activities.

Earth Train’s Center for Biocultural Leadership

The mission of Earth Train’s Center for Biocultural Leadership is to promote biocultural renewal - that is the practice of creating and nurturing natural and social systems designed to ensure the sustainable development of human civilization and the wellbeing and conservation of our natural environment. The actual work of the Center –always pursued in team with a diversity of institutional partners- involves managing and hosting a diversity of training and educational programs, all grounded in real-life experience and supported with on-going coaching and mentoring.

Earth Train, founded in 1990, is a global community of young people and mentors developing values, practical knowledge, and leadership skills for renewing and protecting biological and cultural diversity while promoting sustainable community development in harmony with nature.

Based in Panama since 2001, Earth Train provides in-depth learning and coaching opportunities for youth-led organizations and emerging leaders in fields related to ecological restoration, nature-based education, nature appreciation, wildlife conservation, and sustain- able design for community development. Our emphasis on experiential learning, systems thinking, a coaching relationship between experienced and emerging leaders, peer-to-peer teaching and mentoring, effectively stimulates a multiplier effect as youth helps youth realize their leadership potential.

Earth Train is the founder and manager of the Mamoní Valley Reserve, a 4,000-hectare ecological protection and restoration reserve located in the province of Panama, around the upper Río Mamoní. The reserve, in addition to serving as a buffer zone protecting 18 kilometers of the southern border of Guna Yala and the eastern edge of the Chagres National Park, is Earth Train’s rural campus serving indigenous community leaders, educators, children, college students, film-makers, artists, researchers, and nature guides-in training.

In July 1960, at the age of 26, Jane Goodall traveled from England to what is today Tanzania and bravely entered the little-known world of wild chimpanzees. She was equipped with nothing more than a notebook and a pair of binoculars. But with her unyielding patience and characteristic optimism, she won the trust of these initially shy creatures. She managed to open a window into their sometimes strange and often familiar-seeming lives. The public was fascinated and remains so to this day.In April 2002, Secretary-General Kofi Annan named Dr. Goodall, a UN Messenger of Peace. He cited her for her “dedication to what is best in mankind” and presented her with a lapel pin in the image of a dove. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon renewed Dr. Goodall’s appointment as a UN Messenger of Peace when he took office in 2007.Today, Jane’s work revolves around inspiring action on behalf of endangered species, particularly chimpanzees, and encouraging people to do their part to make the world a better place for people, animals, and the environment we all share.Dr. Goodall carries her message of peace with the natural world through her worldwide outreach efforts, the mission and work of the Jane Goodall Institute, and especially through the Institute’s global environmental and humanitarian youth program, Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots. With members in more than 120 countries, Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots provides young people with the knowledge, tools and hopeful inspiration to better their environment and improve the quality of life of people and animals.
