IMPORTANT
Always refer to Technical DataSheet TFP700 for the INSTALLERWARNING that provides cautionswith respect to handling and instal-lation of sprinkler systems andcomponents. Improper handling and
installation can permanently damagea sprinkler system or its compo-nents and cause the sprinkler to failto operate in a fire situation or causeit to operate prematurely.
GeneralDescription
The TYCO Type HV Nozzles are open(non-automatic) directional spraynozzles with individual inlet strainers. They are designed for use in waterspray fixed systems for fire protectionapplications where a high velocity waterapplication may be required, such as
for the protection of flammable liquids.
The Type HV Nozzles feature an integralstrainer for use when the authorityhaving jurisdiction (other than NFPAapplications) requires the use of indi-vidual strainers in addition to mainpipeline strainers for nozzles having anorifice diameter of 3/16 inch (4,8 mm)or less.
Available in brass or stainless steel, thesix patterns of the Type HV Nozzlesprovide a wide variety of orifice sizesand distribution characteristics. Aswater passes through the internal swirlplate, a swirling action is produced,
prior to the water being dischargedthrough the orifice tip of the body, resulting in a solid conical spray patternof water droplets being discharged overa defined area.
High velocity type nozzles are princi-pally used in water spray systems forthe protection of fixed hazards such astransformers, circuit breakers, dieselengines and diesel storage tanks, turbo alternators, lube oil systems, oilfire boilers, and similar hazards. Theyare capable of rapidly extinguishingoil fires by emulsification, cooling, and
smothering. The surface cooling effectsof high velocity type nozzles alsominimizes the possibility of reignitionafter a fire extinguishment.
It is recommended that the end user beconsulted with respect to the suitabilityof the materials of construction for anygiven corrosive environment. Effects ofambient temperature, concentration ofchemicals, and gas/chemical velocityshould be considered, at a minimum, along with the corrosive nature to whichthe nozzles may be exposed.
The TYCO Type HV Nozzles are aredesignation for the Gem Type HV.
NOTICE
The TYCO Type HV Nozzles describedherein must be installed and main-tained in compliance with thisdocument, as well as with the appli-cable standards of the National FireProtection Association, in addition tothe standards of any other authoritieshaving jurisdiction. Failure to do somay impair the performance of these
devices.
The design of individual water sprayfixed systems can vary considerably, depending on the characteristics andnature of the hazard, the basic purposeof the spraying system, the configu-ration of the hazard, and wind/draftconditions. Because of these variationsas well as the wide range of availablenozzle spray characteristics, the designof water spray fixed systems for fire
protection must only be performed byexperienced designers who thoroughlyunderstand the limitations as well ascapabilities of such systems.
The owner is responsible for main-taining their fire protection system anddevices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinklermanufacturer should be contacted withany questions.

DesignCriteriaNozzle PlacementThe nominal overall spray patterns, spacing, and maximum recommendedaxial distances for six patterns of theType HV Nozzles are given in Figure 2for residual (flowing) pressures of 30
to 80 psi (2,1 to 5,5 bar). A minimumresidual pressure of 30 psi (2,1 bar) cantypically be used for most applications. However, a minimum residual pressureof 50 psi (3,4 bar) is recommended forapplications requiring higher velocitywater delivery, such as those speci-fying rapid extinguishment of oil firesby emulsification.
With reference to Figure 2, use of theDesign Spray Profile for the DesignSpray Area will help assure that directimpingement on all surfaces will occur. The Design Spray Area shown at thetop Figure 2 - Part 2 of 2 on Page 4consists of the square of length Swithin the circular Overall Spray Area.
The maximum recommended axialdistances given in Figure 2 are basedon maintaining the specified spraypatterns under a maximum windcondition of 15 MPH (24 km/h).
Figure 3 provides reference informa-tion showing the overall still air spraypatterns beyond the maximum 15MPH (24 km/h) axial distances, whenprojecting horizontally.
As shown in Figure 3, the spraypatterns become non-concentric,beyond a certain point, due to theaffects of gravity.
Main Pipeline StrainersEven though individual strainers havebeen provided, main pipeline strainersare required for systems utilizing TypeHV Nozzles, since their waterways areless than 3/8 inch (9,5 mm) diameter.
InstallationTYCO Type HV Nozzles must beinstalled in accordance with thissection.
General InstructionsA leak tight 1 inch NPT nozzle jointshould be obtained by applying aminimum to maximum torque of 20 to30 ft.-lbs. (26,8 to 40,2 Nm). A leak tight1-1/4 inch NPT nozzle joint shgould beobtained by applying a minimum tomaximum torque of 30 to 40 ft.-lbs.(40,2 to 53,6 Nm). Higher levels of
torque may distort the nozzle inlet andcause impairment of the nozzle.
1. With pipe thread sealant applied tothe pipe threads, hand tighten thenozzle into the nozzle fitting.
2. Tighten the nozzle into the nozzlefitting using an adjustable crescentwrench. With reference to Figure 1the adjustable crescent wrench is tobe applied to the wrench hex.
Care andMaintenance
The TYCO Type HV High VelocityNozzles must be maintained andserviced in accordance with thissection.
Before closing a fire protection systemmain control valve for maintenance
work on the fire protection systemthat it controls, obtain permission toshut down the affected fire protec-tion system from the proper authoritiesand notify all personnel who may beaffected by this action.
Sprinklers which are found to beleaking or exhibiting visible signs ofcorrosion must be replaced.
Automatic sprinklers must never bepainted, plated, coated, or otherwisealtered after leaving the factory.Modified sprinklers must be replaced.Sprinklers that have been exposed tocorrosive products of combustion, but
have not operated, should be replacedif they cannot be completely cleanedby wiping the sprinkler with a cloth orby brushing it with a soft bristle brush.
Care must be exercised to avoiddamage to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprinklersdamaged by dropping, striking, wrenchtwist/slippage, or the like, must bereplaced.

Water spray fixed systems for fireprotection service require regularlyscheduled care and maintenanceby trained personnel. In addition toinspecting nozzles for proper sprayperformance during water flow triptests of the system, it is recommendedthat nozzles be periodically inspected
for broken or missing parts or evidenceof impaired protection. The inspec-tions should be scheduled weekly oras frequently as may be necessary, and corrective action must be taken toensure that the nozzles will perform asintended in the event of a fire.
The owner is responsible for theinspection, testing, and mainte-nance of their fire protection systemand devices in compliance with thisdocument, as well as with the appli-cable standards of the National FireProtection Association (e.g., NFPA 25),in addition to the standards of any otherauthorities having jurisdiction. Contact
the installing contractor or sprinklermanufacturer regarding any questions.
Water spray fixed systems are recom-mended to be inspected, tested, andmaintained by a qualified InspectionService in accordance with localrequirements and/or national codes.
