Thanks to Equal Justice Works programs, in 2012 more than 800 law students and public interest lawyers served communities throughout the country to provide needed legal assistance to veterans, disaster victims, families threatened with home foreclosures, immigrants, victims of domestic violence, and more. Equal Justice Works Fellows, AmeriCorps Legal Fellows, Summer Corps Members, and Public Defender Corps Fellows were spreading the seeds of justice in 26 states and the District of Columbia to serve the nation’s indigent and at-risk populations.

As our troops returned from Iraq, we quickly realized these returning veterans needed legal advocates. In the Class of 2012, 17 Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellows resolved legal problems to assist 264 veterans with VA benefits in order to access healthcare, increase income, reduce their debt, and secure housing (often avoiding homelessness). Overall, Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellows secured $1.9 million in tangible economic benefits for veterans.

When Hurricane Sandy hit in October, we immediately redeployed three Fellows to New York City to help victims access FEMA benefits, provide support in landlord-tenant disputes, and teach “know-your-rights” clinics in Staten Island, Brooklyn and Manhattan.

We have provided legal assistance to those suffering from the housing foreclosure crisis since 2009. Adding to these efforts, in 2012, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan awarded Equal Justice Works a grant for four, three-year Fellowships to assist distressed and at-risk homeowners and tenants throughout the state.

As national student loan debt grew to historic proportions, ballooning to nearly $900 billion, our Equal Justice Works educational debt experts kept law students and graduates informed about loans, repayment options like Public Service Loan Forgiveness, and pending legislation like the Student Loan Fairness Act (previously the Student Loan Forgiveness Act). We also published an eBook, Take Control of Your Future: A Guide to Managing your Student Debt that has the latest information about options for dealing with educational debt.

As we reflect on the past year’s achievements, we are determined to keep up our fight to close the justice gap across America. We couldn’t do it without the incredible support of our partners, our sponsors, our members, our Fellows, and our staff.

Thank you all.
