A virtual armada of RV’s rolled into TheBaptist College of Florida (BCF) campus inJanuary month when the 42-member BUDDBuilders showed up with hammers in hand todo just that—build.

The Missouri based Building Under DivineDirection (BUDD) Builders program, a not-for-profit group created in 1997, has traveledthe country from Arizona to Miami buildingchurches for eight years. After reading aboutBCF’s Shepherds’ Cottages for retired minis-ters, the group decided to vary from their usualchurch-building work to help honor those whohave given a lifetime of Christian service.

The trip brought the RV-traveling group ofretired teachers, railroad workers, civil service, bankers, ministers, construction managers, business owners, and more from Missouri tothe rural northwest Florida college campuswhere they are building two new homes in thecollege’s Shepherds’ Cottages development.

The Shepherds’ Cottages are individualresidences for independent living on the cam-pus of BCF designed to serve as affordableretirement homes for retired ministers.

Each of the cottages is built entire-ly through donations and volunteerlabor in a similar fashion as the popu-lar Habitat-For-Humanity model.

According to Kinchen, The BUDDBuilders have been an integral part ofthe process as their work moves thedevelopment closer to serving moreretired ministers. “The BUDDBuilders have brought a greater focusto the Shepherds’ Cottages,” explainsthe college president. “They havetapped into the passion that I feel forthe project. In fact we have designatedone of the streets in the development

as “BUDD Way.”Now in their second year of work at BCF,

the BUDD Builders have seen the completionof two cottages from the ground up, bringingthe total number of cottages to six.

The group, representing 16 MissouriSouthern Baptist churches, will conclude theirthree-month trip to northwest Florida inMarch, but they have already voted to return tothe campus next year when they will continuethe work at the Shepherds’ Cottages.

“These folks are literally a God send forthe college,” says Kinchen of the BUDDBuilders’ contribution to the cottages and otherbuilding projects on campus including a newresidence hall and renovation of the mainadministration building. “They come in with awillingness to work and a great sense of God’sleadership. We look forward to seeing themeach year.”

“I have never seen a group work harder andhave a more pleasant outlook,” he continues.“They are a genuine pleasure on the campusand in the community. We would be lost with-out them.”

ECHOES

Dear Friends,

It is time to reflect for a moment, assess where we are,and as the Apostle Paul wrote to the Philippian churchpress on “toward the mark.” During 2005 we saw evi-

dence of our Lord’s blessings in all facets of the school’s life. Many of the familiarfaces on campus left with the death of Dr. J.W. Lee and the retirements of Drs. JerryOswalt, Jack Cunningham, and Irvin Murrell. We are reminded that the individualpersonalities may change, but the personality and focus of the college remains that of“Changing the World through the Unchanging Word®.”

The last year has seen many advances in technology. From the wireless campus to thegrowth of our radio ministry we have been reminded that the old story is couched innew transmission methods. Through our various degree programs we have continuedto send out those who bring a song to the heart, good news for the soul, instructionfor young minds and mending for wounded spirits. What better work could anyschool hope to do, and what finer product could any institution hope to produce?

After a bit of reflection we need to assess where we are. Very simply, we are full. Ourresidence halls, apartments, classrooms and offices are stretched almost beyond theirlimits. In view of this we have begun an ambitious program of construction and ren-ovation of student housing. New ten-bed residence hall units are being built for sin-gle students. The Lakeview Apartments are being totally renovated on the interior andexterior. The program also calls for construction of several new apartments for largerfamilies.

Thankfully the renovation and expansion of the R.G. Lee Chapel has been complet-ed, and we are anticipating a service of dedication on Friday, May 5, 2006. Some ren-ovation work has been completed on Solomon Hall and Graceville Hall. We havecompleted construction of six Shepherds’ Cottages. Also, we are nearing completionof the Dr. J.W. and Joyce Lee Visiting Scholars Residence. These projects have beenmade possible through the generosity of God’s faithful people who have contributedso faithfully.

So where do we go in pressing “toward the mark?” The future is bright, and the pos-sibilities are without limit. Our Just Imagine capital fundraising campaign continuesas we prepare for a new classroom building, new offices, new music facilities, expanded student services facilities and the development of new property. Expandedareas of study are on the horizon as we develop further in teacher education, mediatechnology, and business administration services.

When we review where we have come, where we are, and the condition of the worldaround us our only possible response is to pray harder, grow stronger, stand taller, andfollow closer as we press “toward the mark.” I am enthusiastically anticipating thejourney. Please come with us. With God’s guidance and your support we will seegreater days than we have ever imagined in “Changing the World through theUnchanging Word®.”

God Bless You,

From The PresidentToward the

BCF continues to hold steadfast in thejourney toward the mark of “Changing theWorld Through the Unchanging Word®.”Students are encouraged in their spiritualwalk through a variety of programs. Chapelservices are held Monday throughWednesday each week featuring lead-ing Southern Baptist pastors andteachers from Florida and aroundthe country.

Each residence hall offersorganized prayer andaccountability groups.Baptist Collegiate Ministry(BCM) continues the popu-lar “Salpiza” meeting eachTuesday night. New offer-ings include a NearlyWeds/Newly Weds classtaught each week by Dr. TodTanner.

BCM student teams continueto take to the streets with thegospel message reaching thisyear into several juveniledetention centers andnumerous churches.Ministries includedrama, music andprayer.

Many other stu-dents are sharing theirfaith at home and abroadas seen in the missionsstory on page 6.

The past year has brought manyadvances and a renewed vision for thefuture at BCF. “Our Lord continues to sendwonderful people to the college for theirministry preparation,” tells Kinchen. “Theworld is too lost and the costs are too highf o r

us to relax in our efforts to educate and traina mighty army for our Lord.”

“Our Lord has set the mark for eachindividually and for the college family as awhole. It is now our great responsibility andprivilege to move toward that divineappointment,” he continues.

“We will take a moment to celebrate thesuccesses and pray fervently over the

challenges. After that we move for-ward in the great joy of knowing

that we are on this wonderfuljourney in fellowship with

each other and with theHoly Spirit of God.”

4 w ECHOES / SPRING 2006

As The Baptist College of Floridapresses on “toward the mark” it isvaluable to reflect for a moment on

the year that has passed.“The year of 2005 has been one of great

blessing and hope at BCF,” said PresidentThomas A. Kinchen. “We have seen evi-dences of God’s hand at work on the cam-pus, in the classrooms, in the chapel, in thelocal churches and schools, and on the mis-sion fields.”

A Christian Studies major was added tothe college’s curriculum. The major isdesigned for students who have previouslycompleted an Associate degree from aregionally accredited community college.

The program of study builds on the asso-ciate degree allowing students to completetheir study at BCF more efficiently.

The college welcomed Dr. James Newellto the faculty ranks in July 2005. He cameon board as the Associate Professor of OldTestament and Hebrew.

Dr. Rich Elligson was another signifi-cant contributor for the fall semester whenhe served as the visiting Missions Professor. He taught nine hours of Mission courseswhile on stateside assignment from hiswork in Brazil with the InternationalMission Board.

New on the horizon is a media ministrycomponent.

The college campus in Graceville hasseen numerous improvements. Perhapsmost significant is the completion of therenovation project of the exterior of the R.G.Lee Chapel.

As seen on the cover, the chapel is facedwith redbrick andhighlightedby majesticfront col-umns and anew steeplefixed atopthe center ofthe structure. The frontentrance isflanked by acollection ofold fash-ioned lampposts surround-ing the structure in a befitting gentle gloweach night.

Several groups of volunteers from areachurches made visits to the BCF campusthis year to assist with construction projects.

Among those are: Calvary BaptistChurch of Dothan, Alabama, Orlando FirstBaptist Church, Fellowship Baptist Churchof Tallahassee, and First Baptist Church ofThomasville, Georgia, Ridgecrest BaptistChurch in Dothan and Harmony BaptistAssociation.

The groups built decks, access ramp, new bathroom, painted the Library, studentcenter and cafeteria, remodeled two units inthe Lakeview Housing Complex, and driedin the JW and Joyce Lee Cottage forVisiting Scholars.

The B.U.D.D. Builders are on campusnow making vast improvements as theycomplete construction of the Lee Cottage,

and constructionof a much needed new residence hall.

The food service and bookstore areas arealso under renovation. The site of the for-mer bookstore has been redesigned as thecollege’s new coffee shop, King’s Cup.

Quickly becoming a favorite hang-outfor students, the shop offers a variety of fla-vors of coffee and cold drinks as well as acozy atmosphere to chat with a friend orstudy.

Future plans call for a new classroombuilding and expansion of office facilities.

Page 4: Spring 06 Layout · 2019. 6. 6. · residence halls, apartments, classrooms and offices are stretched almost beyond their limits. In view of this we have begun an ambitious program

through his Personal Evangelism course. In last year’s class 59 students reported

698 evangelistic attempts; 450 times shar-ing testimony and/or a gospel presentation.These efforts resulted in 83 professions offaith.

Mission trips last summer also sawgroups in Miami and upstate New York forchurch planting work and West Africa forevangelism and discipleship work with theDagaari people group.

Two BCF students found independentmission opportunities, spending their sum-mers in India and China and several wereinvolved in various types of missions workthrough BCM summer missions and otherinternships.

As reported previously in Echoes, BCFstudents and faculty rolled up their sleevesand got dirty in demolition efforts in thehurricane ravaged gulf coas region ofMississippi in the fall of this year.

I think these trips were an eye-opener toall of us,” explained BCF mission coordina-tor Lauren Parnell of the experience.

The trip brought a realization to thegroup of how quickly they could be in needof the same assistance they were trying toprovide. “Our group [saw] first hand howwe can be stripped of all our possessions ina matter of hours, and have nothing left butour faith that God’s hand has not left us,”she said. “Truly we have to rely on Godeveryday for the provisions we have everyday.”

Parnell, a mission intern at BCF fromSouthwestern Baptist Theological Seminaryin Fort Worth, Texas, also led a group of 19students to South Carolina over theChristmas break. The group ministered toover 300 people during the week-long trip.

Working in conjunction with SouthCarolina’s Saluda Baptist Association, stu-dents staged Christmas parties for inner citychildren and senior adults in area nursinghomes.

In addition, they volunteered atAnderson Inner-Faith ministries, a Christianorganization that seeks to aid the workingpoor. The staff kept the group busy workingin the food pantry, repainting the office anddistributing Christmas presents.

Spring Break wasn’t time to hit thebeach for five BCF students who spent the

week in Russia where, instead of workingon their tan, they worked in orphanages, presented anevangelisticevent, assist-ed a churchplant, andministered tothe homeless.

The tripwas spon-sored by BobH a r t m a nInternationalMinistries inN a s h v i l l e ,T e n n e s s e efollowing anapologeticsseminar pre-sented at thecollege earli-er in the year.Students whoparticipatedin the semi-nar wereinvited to goon the SpringBreak trip to Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Still upcoming this year is a mission tripknown around campus as the “AmazonRiver Trip.” Led by Jumper, the team of 14,including 11 students, himself, and 2 med-ical staff, will travel to the port town ofManacapuru, Brazil where they will boardthe Marco Polo on the Amazon River.

They will travel 20 hours up the riverand then live on the river vessel for 10 days. Each day the group will take smaller boatsout through the tributaries to the jungles tominister to the unreached people groupson the banks of the Amazon.

“It’s like going back in time onthe Amazon River,” explains teammember and BCF SophomoreMission major Malia Parrish.“From what I’ve read, the menstill get up every morning andgo hunting for food for the day. We’re going to have to reallyhumble ourselves on this trip.Their way of life is so complete-ly different.”

Parrish had been praying and askingGod to open doors for the mission trip in

which she should participate. The Amazon River trip real-ly struck a cord with theCape Coral, Florida native.“It’s a unique trip in whatwe’re going to be doing trav-eling up and down the riverby boat and in who we willbe able to minister to,” shecontinued. “I’m excited to bepart of it.”

Jumper says that stu-dents like Malia are whyBCF provides hands-on mis-sion opportunities in the col-lege curriculum. “We believethat missions is best learnedin action, on-the-field, so weprovide both short-term tripsand long-term internships forstudents,” he elaborates.

“The students benefitacademically, spiritually, andpractically with the experi-ence, and the Lord’s work isaccomplished in beautifulways as we minister and

evangelize.”By the year’s end, hundreds of people

around the world will have been reached bythe faculty and students of BCF.

This feat, Kinchen says, is evidence ofthe continued mission emphasis at BCFwhere the focus remains “Changing theWorld Through the Unchanging Word®.”

Missions

6 w ECHOES / SPRING 2006

If you ask BCF President Dr. Thomas A.Kinchen what he feels is the heartbeatof the college, without hesitation he

will answer each time-- missions. Missions has long been an important

facet of college life for BCF students andwith the addition of the Missions degree in2004 became a formal program of study.Students have the opportunity to participatein numerous college sponsored missiontrips each year from just down the street toaround the world.

“There is just no substitute for a heartcaptured by the realization that our Lord letsus work with Him in sharing the gospelthroughout the world,” says Kinchen of thepurposeful mission emphasis at BCF.

“My prayer for BCF is twofold. First, Ipray that we will never lose the focus andfervor for mission involvement. Second, Ipray that we will continually find moreways to express that focus and fervor,” the16-year college president explains. “It is myabsolute intent to do all that I can to see thisprayer come to fulfillment. It is one of thegreatest joys of my life.”

Kinchen’s efforts to fulfill this prayer areevident in the practical work going on everyday at BCF. Dr. Robin Jumper, dean of fac-ulty, associate professor of evangelism andmissions, and chair of the theology division, encourages students to engage in missionsin their own backyard each semester

Quick LookBCF students ministered,or will minister, in theseareas this year:
