� �� Spinning is now touted as the new "Zen" of the world. Mahatma Ghandi knew that decades ago. Just 5 years ago they were touting knitting on that same pedestal of honor. It wasn't too many years ago when I walked into a gym and saw "spinning classes". I thought then that spinning had finally made it into the common genre, only to learn they were "spinning" on stationary bicycles. Another indicator of spinning's popularity is when our Beginning/Intermediate Spinning 3-day workshop fills so full I have to add another class to the schedule and the second one becomes even more full

than the first! Part of this increase in spinning interest, I believe, comes from knitters wanting to make their own yarn. Our Designer Yarns class is perfect for this!�� This has sure been an interesting year in changing weather patterns, record numbers of hurricanes, warm winter, early tornadoes, more fires. Some of our dear weaving and spinning friends lost their wheels and looms to Katrina. Hillcreek Yarn Shoppe, and associated knit groups, have been knitting away for relief causes. Hillcreek Fiber Studio has replaced tri-looms for free when we've learned of their loss. If you know of individuals who have lost equipment originally bought from us, please let us know. Tragic losses due to war and weather remind us how valuable our friends and family are. We need to spend time with them and let them know how much we appreciate them. This is our family's year for family reunions. Denny's mom's side of the family, the Leubberings, can draw over 250 clan members in April; Carol Leigh's parents, 6 siblings and families are getting together in Pennsylvania in June; and Denny's 6 siblings and families in September at a family farm in Missouri. An apology is due for confusion of dates in our last fall newsletter calendar. As much as I think I've checked and rechecked dates, I still got a couple wrong, which effected others as well. Sorry for any inconvenience. Please note the corrected dates on our Event Calendar, Page 5 for our Fiber Furloughs I & II, which are based on the dates for the Native Craft Workshop, which has moved their dates to begin at the end of July. �� SPRING, 2006 (continued from Page 1) Guest instructors: In April Merike Saarniit is back by popular demand, teaching Spinning for Socks (see her article in this spring Spin-Off magazine), and two interesting Estonian stitches which look much more complex than they really are: Patent Stitches, and Raspberries & Blueberries (see her article in Knitter's magazine). In July, on the weekend between our Fiber Furloughs, the popular Wren Ross and Daena Giardella, co-authors of Changing Patterns: Discovering the Fabric of your Creativity, will be offering great seminars on developing your creativity in both knitting and life in general. One of our favorite guests, Sarah Natani, will again be offering Intermediate to Advanced Navajo Weaving in November. New Class at Hillcreek Fiber Studio: We're considering offering a different dye class, only if there's enough interest: Natural Dyes, an exploration of the Least-known Ancient Ones: Alkanet, Annatto, Kamala, Myrobalan, Red Sandalwood, Safflower, Woad, Quercitron, Pomegranate Rinds and others. March 2007. Let us know if you think you'd enjoy exploring these little-used ancient dyes. We've been exploring ways to use our relatively new 5-foot Adjustable Square Loom. Besides adjusting to nine sizes of squares, the adjustable loom adjusts to 36 different sizes of rectangles each of which can be used horizontally or vertically on its convenient stand. Thus, besides conveniently weaving square blankets, new ways to use our square loom include Rectangular Shawl/table runner using the continuous thread weaving method in a rectangle, and Elegant Ruana (still on the loom) using a variation on conventional weaving, and of course, tapestries of various sizes. Leslie Carroll, on-line Weaving List Mom, has designed a Kimono by weaving squares, then felting, cutting and sewing. See Page 4 for pictures of projects done on the square loom. Also check out a new project from the Travel Looms, a Kimono Coat using a variation on the BexShelLaura Jacket Pattern with the 3-foot Tri and Square Looms rather than the 2-foot set. Turkey trip with Theresa. In my last newsletter I described my wonderful trip to Turkey last fall, and how Mehmet Girgic was arranging to offer workshops for visiting guests. Well, he and Theresa May-O'Brien of New York have put together a wonderful opportunity August 13 - 19, 2006 for studying in Turkey. Students may focus on learning one of three skills: Felting with Mehmet, or Kilim Weaving or Pile Carpet Weaving with local expert weaving teachers. Also on the itinerary are learning traditional natural dye techniques, visiting local museums and bazaars, and various side trips. Class size is limited to 10. New Product: Extraordinary Fiber Washing Bag by Ozark Delights was introduced at the Missouri Fiber Retreat March 2006, receiving rave reviews. This unique product is made of an ultra fine netting which helps prevent fiber from clogging washing machines and pipes. It is designed as a single donut-shaped bag, making it easy to manipulate in the tub of a top loading washing machine. It is useful not only for the washing of fibers such as alpaca, llama, mohair, and wool, but also when just soaking yarns, rovings or fibers in preparation to set the twist or to dye. The Fiber Washing Bag is available either assembled ($19.50) or as a kit with sewing instructions ($15.50). Patent Pending. I would recommend ordering two -- one for washing whites, one for washing colors. This wonderful magazine, self-published by Jean Scorgie, previous editor for Handwoven magazine, covers specific weave structures with projects, clear directions, colorful pictures, tips and tricks for any level handweaver. Issue 19 is just off the press. This is a series which will become a collectors' item. $6.45 each. Special: Buy the whole set of 19, get two free, $109.65 (save $12.90). In Memorial Old time friend and supplier, Roger Wolf of Alliance Imports passed away in February after battling cancer of the spine for several years. Roger has for decades successfully imported quality dyes from around the world. We've worked with him for over 15 years. He was truly a wonderful person to work with. His family plans to continue the business. Dye Recipe Bill Bailey's BOB (Black Oak Bark, or Quercitron) & recipe. Bill has found a source for BOB, has refined it to the concentrated color-yielding part of the bark, and has been developing some recipes based on early dye manuals and Jim Liles' Art and Craft of Natural Dyeing, $19.95. Quercitron was the major dye exported from USA during the 1800's. Used for its excellent yellows and golds. Here's Bill's great recipe for Fiery Scarlet. Use the following percentages of dyestuffs to weight of goods dyed: 20% Black Oak Bark, 8% Cochineal, 6% Tin/Stannic Chloride, 2% Cream of Tartar, 3% Oxalic Acid. Simmer the cochineal in soft water for ten minutes. Add the other ingredients, cold soft water and the fiber. Slowly bring to boil. Boil for 30 to 90 minutes. Longer makes the color more billiant. Mehmet's Dye Recipe for Aubergine (ancient Turkish recipe) Premordant wool at the rate of 4 ounces iron to one pound wool. Let fibers set in mordant bath at least over night. Grind matter roots. Use at the rate of one to two pounds madder root to one pound wool. Cook roots several hours. Add mordanted wool to dye bath with the root parts. Let set without further cooking for 3 or 4 days. This dye has a wonderful dark purple cast of aubergine, or egg-plant color. The Missouri State Spring Spin-In has been in existence since the mid 1980's when Sammy Eber and Carol Leigh were co-chairs of the Woolgatherers Study group of the Columbia Weavers and Spinners' Guild. CW&SG sponsored the event for 7 years, then decided to give other spinning groups around the state the opportunity to host the event. Since then, Carol Leigh's Hillcreek Fiber Studio has co-sponsored the event with other guilds to keep some consistency with mailing lists, et cetera. Over the years the Spin-In has been hosted in such areas as St. Louis, Marshfield, Hannibal, Chillicothe, Berger, Kansas City, and Defiance at Boone's Home -- in all four corners of the State and then some. Franklin County Fiber Artists and Boone's Home have made a joint commitment to continue to sponsor this event from now on. For contact info, see Page 11. I would like to thank all those who have been involved with this event over the years. It's been a wonderful opportunity for our spinning community to stay connected with one another. Nestled in the Little Bonne Femme Creek Valley, amidst woods and pastures, in view of a major state park, Hillcreek Fiber Studio offers the serenity for a true get-away. Let someone else do the cooking. Just focus on learning a new skill or on exploring an older one. Cuddle up with a book from over 800 titles on the shelves. Relax. You deserve some quiet time for yourself. Workshops at Hillcreek Fiber Studio allow the student to immerse her or himself in the study and exploration of a number of textile-related subjects. We continue to offer at least two sessions each year in the more popular subjects of Spinning, Natural Dyeing, Four & More Shaft Weaving, Navajo Weaving, and Triangle Weaving. We periodically add classes in Spinning Special Fibers, Spinning Designer Yarns, Children’s Fiber Weekend, Inkle & Tablet Weaving, Felting, and Knitting, among others, as the demand warrants them. In the past, we’ve added special workshops with guest instructors, such as knitting, mushroom dyeing, kumi-himo, and felting. FIBER FURLOUGH - I: Five and one-half days, July 9-14, 2006. Focus on Spinning: beginning, designer yarns, and/or special fibers; Dyeing , natural and synthetic immersion and painting fabrics and fibers, Focus on Indigo with Rebecca; and Felting, both wet and dry needle techniques, creating functional vessels and wearables as well as whimsical sculptures, Locker Hooking. Dye and spin your own designer yarns. FIBER FURLOUGH — II: Five and one-half days, July 16-21, 2006. Focus on what you can do with yarn: Weaving of all types - - Rigid Heddle, Four & More Shaft Structures, Navajo, Triangle, Tapestry, Inkle, Tablet, Fingerweaving, Kumi-himo Braiding, Lucet Cordage, Macrame, and Tatting, and now Kilim and Pile Carpet weaving. Obviously, no one person can explore it all, but you can choose one, two or three types to explore during the week. And what you don't have time to explore yourself, you can observe others doing.

Students may choose to spend both Fiber Furlough weeks with us for a 10% discount on both tuition and B&B for both weeks. Do the whole textile process - weave or knit something the second week from the yarn you spun and dyed the first week! NATURAL DYEING, MISSOURI PLANTS: Two-day weekend, Sept 9-10, 2006. A full color spectrum will be obtained from foraged plants within walking distance of Hillcreek Fiber Studio — red from pokeberries, blue, lavender and green from elderberries, yellows and oranges from flowers, browns and blacks from trees. Students will go home with over 60 dye samples on wool, cotton, and raw silk fabric. They may bring items of their fiber medium to dye: fiber, yarn, fabric, basket reed, quills, buttons, etc. BEGINNING SPINNING / SPINNING SPECIAL FIBERS: Two or three days: Sept 15-17, 2006 (note: Fri, Sat, Sun) Beginning students, Fri & Sat, will learn basics of spinning, choosing and skirting fleece, cleaning, carding & combing techniques, spinning on spindles and a variety of spinning wheels. They will make at least two 2-ply skeins of handspun yarn. Spinning Special Fibers students, Sat & Sun, will dress distaffs and spin Flax, unwind cocoons & spin Silk from several preparations, spin Cotton and other Fine Fibers on charkas & taklis, and will Comb Wool. BEGINNING THRU ADVANCED TRI- AND SQUARE LOOM WEAVING: Two or three days, Nov 4-6, 2006 and Feb 17 - 19, 2007. In two days students can complete a full 7-foot Triangle Shawl using the simple, unique continuous-thread method. Or choose to stay three days, take your time and learn a few intermediate or advanced techniques, such as twill, leno lace, log cabin, double weave, plus color patterns, such as tartan plaids and color blending, or weave on the square loom . ADVANCED NAVAJO WEAVING: Five and one-half days, Nov 12-17, 2006. Guest instructor Sarah Natani has become family. This will be her ninth visit to Hillcreek Fiber Studio, and husband Leo’s seventh. Sarah’s focus will be on Advanced Navajo Weaving techniques, including twills and two-faced structures (different design on each side), by using 4-shed techniques (or come and practice basic techniques). Guest instructor tuition - $395.

B E G I N N I N G / I N T E R M E D I A T E WEAVING: Four days: Feb 10 - 13, 2007. Beginning students will complete two projects, warp their loom twice, learn threading and weaving techniques and how to read and understand pattern drafts and basic weaving theory. Intermediate students will work independently on projects with guidance from the instructor. They may choose to weave a “Colonial Weave Structure Sampler”, “Tartan Dancing Shawl” or another project of their choosing. BEGINNING SPINNING/ SPINNING DESIGNER YARNS: Two or three days: Feb 24 - 26, 2007. Beginning students, Sat & Sun, will learn basics of spinning, choosing and skirting fleece, cleaning, carding & combing techniques, spinning on spindles and on a variety of spinning wheels. They will make at least two 2-ply skeins of handspun yarn. Designer Yarn students, Sun. & Mon, will learn color & fiber blending and Navajo 3-ply techniques. They will create novelty yarns such as slubs, knop, marl, core-spun, loop, and feather yarns, among others. NATURAL DYEING, LEAST-KNOWN ANCIENT DYES: Two-day weekend, March 3 - 4, 2007. This will be an exploratory class using dyes rarely used, such as Alkanet, Annatto, Kamala, Myrobalan, Red Sandalwood, Quercitron, Pomegranate Rinds, Safflower, and Woad. We need at least four students to make the class. BEGINNING & INTERMEDIATE NAVAJO WEAVING: Four days, March 24-27, 2007. Students will warp their looms and learn basic Navajo weaving techniques and color joins. The experience will include readings and discussions of the Navajo/diné culture. Most students will finish a sampler, learning finishing techniques for the tight ending. Tuition: Two days, $120; three days, $165; four days, $220; five and 1/2 days, $295. �� SPRING, 2006 Announcement: Two-Day Workshop in Triangle Frame Loom Weaving in Cumberland, Maryland, May 9 and 10 Carol Leigh Brack-Kaiser will offer a two-day workshop in basics and advanced weaving techniques for triangle looms on Tuesday, May 9 and Wednesday, May 10 at Millicent's Yarns & More immediately following Maryland Sheep and Wool Fest. The workshop will include basic techniques, color changes, twill and leno lace. Advanced work will include double cloth, color and weave effects, and soumack surface texture. New triangle loom weavers are encouraged to attend. Experienced tri-loom weavers will learn much to add to their skills. Fast and efficient Estonian method of creating luscious brioche stitch patterns so rich in texture. Technique also used for unique cables, ribs, and individual motifs sure to evoke "how did you DO that?" comments. We will swatch over-all patterns, two-color patterns (where one colornet seems to float on a different color ground, individual motifs, and exotic-looking cables that do not require a cable needle. An Author Event: Authors Daena Gairdella and Wren Ross will present an interactive program based on their new book. Changing Patterns explores the power of creativity as a vital tool for self-development, change and fulfillment, overcoming the blocks that deter creativity. In Part I, Giardella helps readers' identify unique creative work cycles and make peace with inhibiting forces, to have fun with fiber, in the kitchen, studio, or garden. In Part II, Ross illustrates the value of the creative process by using knitting as a metaphor for life, how one begins and ends a project, gets out of tangles and deals with mistakes.
