Homecoming 2007: HIGHLIGHTS

Mr. and Mrs. Eunice Williams

During Homecoming 2008, the eleven (11) children of Eunice and Dorothy Williams completed and exceeded a fi nancial goal of $100,000 to the UAPB Alumni Endowment Fund. Interest from this fund will be used to provide scholarship dollars to students attending the University.

Eunice and Dorothy Williams were natives of Grant County, Arkansas. After their marriage on November 7, 1943, the couple moved to Pine Bluff. As a young couple starting off in life, Eunice became a laborer while his wife settled into becoming a homemaker and raising their eleven children. Eunice became a policeman on the UAPB campus, twenty-two years (22) prior to retirement. In 1954, after studying at the famed Madam C.J. Walker Beauty School, Dorothy successfully passed state requirements to practice cosmetology in Arkansas. Later, in her early- fi fties, she enrolled at UAPB as a freshman, thus becoming a “non-traditional” student.

The couple worked untiringly to instill in their children the desire to achieve and give back to the community. They shared the philosophy that education does not end with a cap and gown but continues into the real world. This philosophy was epitomized and demonstrated though the

achievements of their children and the impact the Williams have made upon the lives of others.

UAPB was always the fi rst choice of higher education for the couple’s children. Many times, Dorothy would pass by the campus and say – “one day, I want my children to go to that college.” As parents of eleven children, eight attended UAPB and fi ve received Degrees from UAPB. All eleven children attended college with ten receiving bachelor’s degrees, ten received master’s degrees and three attained doctoral degrees. Her passion and dreams were fulfi lled.

Eunice and Dorothy’s educational goals for their children could not have been achieved without their commitment to God and the spiritual gifts that come only from Him. They entrusted their lives to the upbuilding of His Kingdom by focusing on the needs of the family and reaching out to the community.

All of their children are proud to call them “mom” and “dad”. Dorothy passed away in December, 1998 and three months later Eunice followed her to their celestial home of peace. “The children wanted to leave a lasting and impacting legacy in their honor. Therefore, we strongly felt that donating dollars to the UAPB Alumni Endowment Fund will be used to provide an educational experience for many students attending the University now and in the future,” stated Shirley Williams, spokesperson for the family. Total amount donated by the children to the Eunice and Dorothy Williams Scholarship Fund is $103,000.

The couple’s children are: Evester Williams-Darrough, Dr. Bettye Williams, Shirley Williams, Dr. Brenda Williams-Graham, Dr. Margarette Williams-Williams, Charles Williams, N. Lucille Williams-Gilkey, Sterlin Williams, Ted Williams, Robin Williams-Baylark and Sonnya Williams-Adams.

Williams Family Donated $103,000 to Alumni Fund

The UAPB Class of 1970 announced the completion of a $100,000 commitment to the Alumni Endowment Fund during Homecoming 2008. As noted from the Offi ce of Alumni Affairs, the Class of 1970 will go on record as the fi rst class to contribute such an amount to the Alumni Endowment Fund. This historical event will serve as a benchmark for other classes to follow.

“It was not an easy endeavor; however, this class donated, not raised, the $100,000 to be used by future students of this great institution,”said Doris Wallace a fellow classmate. Interest from this scholarship fund will be used to provide much needed scholarships for years to come.

“It took a lot of time to identify and locate all classmates around the country, but it was worth the time and effort to do so,” stated Shirley Johnson, also a classmate. “If the local committee had to do it again, we would without hesitation,” continued Ms. Johnson.

Total amount donated by classmates was $100,050, thereby exceeding the initial commitment. A very special thanks to other local committee team members: Shirley Williams, Frances Waddell, Carol Tabron, Linda Turner, Ernest Trice, Gwendolyn Allen, Flozell Hawkins, J.W. Mason, Claude Nicholson, Charlene Kelley, Joyce Campbell, John E. Green, Jr., C.W. Easter, Jr., John Ragland III, Earnestine McLaughlin and many friends of this class. Deceased classmates on the local committee were Annie Epperson, Larry Clemons, and William Dove, Jr.

The Class of 1970 will be celebrating its 40th anniversary in the year 2010. All classmates are expected to be a part of this very special event. National Alumni President, Mrs. Ceola Davis-Barnes is proud member of the Class of 70.

Mess age fr om th e Pre sidentThis has been a most challenging year for all of us. Regrettably, most of the goals that we set out to

achieve have not been accomplished. However, we must remain positive, vigilant and resolved to move forward. Our great university depends on us; our students need us and the legacies of so many great forerunners require that we pass the torch to others so that they may continue the journey. We must move forward! In the spirit of one of our Greatest Presidents, “We have nothing to fear but fear it self.”

As I did in the beginning of my tenure, I challenged each of you to do two things: (1) paint the picture of UAPB National Alumni Association as it is now and (2) paint the picture as you envision it becoming. We must continue to focus on the main pillars that will make our Association all that it can be. We can do this by expanding the membership base, raising more funds, and by getting more alumni involved in alumni affairs. Growing the university and growing the Alumni Association is our perennial goal. Every alumni must put and keep his or her hand on the plow. Remember, our focus is to promote the general welfare of the university and support the development of our students into becoming global productive citizens. Retaining, reclaiming and recruiting members require everyone’s attention.

The Goals in our draft Strategic Plan 2007-2011 must be adopted and executed. It is imperative that we realize and understand that, “A people without a vision shall perish.” I truly believe that execution of the Strategic Plan Goals can make a difference in where we are now and where we would like to go as an association.

• Increase Revenue Streams - Strategic Goal 1: We need to increase the Revenue Streams for the Association. The Association’s major revenue streams come from National Memberships (Life and Regular) and the Queen Contestant Drive. As of this date, only eleven chapters out of a total of forty-four have paid chapter assessments. A total of approximately 500 members have paid annual dues, of a population of 16,000 plus. Imagine if we colleted annual membership dues of $35.00 from 15,000 alumni, we would generate $525,000. This is enough capital to adequately staff our national offi ce (hire an Executive Director and offi ce staff), make needed alumni house repairs, purchase and update equipment, hire consultants, and provide additional fi nancial support to the university.

• Improve Governance and Management - Strategic Goal 2. The Strategic Plan refers to the

Constitution and Bylaws Committee conducting a thorough review and revision of the National By-laws to ensure that Best Practices for Non-profi t organizations are being refl ected. The current Constitution and Bylaws are being revised. Now all of us must continue to work to improve effi ciency and fl exibility in order for our Association to function in a timely and meaningful manner. The Membership needs to assume a broader role in the governing process to ensure accountability from the National Board of Directors.

• Enhance Student Recruitment and Scholarship – Strategic Goal 3. Increasing our student population is the lifeline for our University. We all have a responsibility to recruit students to attend the University. We all must subscribe to the motto: OneRecuritOne. All chapters should honor the request of the Student Recruitment Offi ce and send $200.00 to assist with current student recruitment efforts.

• Increase Alumni Membership and Expand Marketing Efforts – Strategic Goal 4. The Strategic Plan details the following four objectives for this committee: (1) Develop a comprehensive program to introduce and expose students to the Alumni Association as freshmen with follow-up activities throughout their student life. (2) Institute yearly alumni luncheon for graduating seniors to discuss responsibilities and benefi ts of the Alumni Association. (3) Conduct annual surveys to assess the interests of the alumni. (4) Develop and implement a comprehensive plan to increase and retain membership.

• Establish an Effective Alumni Communication Program – Strategic Goal 5. At the very fi rst teleconference meeting held with Chapter Presidents and Board Members, all Board Members and Chapters were requested to have and/or secure access to Email. All members of the Board with the exception of one have access to Email. Out of a total of forty-four chapters, twenty-eight chapters have access to e-mail. This is clearly an area that requires more improvement in order to facilitate connectivity enhancement within our association.

Our rate of progress must improve! We must now focus on the mission of the University rather

than on personalities and fads. We must continually ask ourselves: “Where Do We Go from Here and How Will We Get There?” A much needed change is mandated and we have been assigned the charge of bringing this mandate into fruition. I urge all of you to look forward to 2008 as a year that will bring unifi cation of minds and positive attitudes that promote the changes needed to advance our Association progressively forward. What does the future hold for UAPB? What does the future hold for the UAPB National Alumni Association? Every day we go without a quality governing body is a day lost to this University. Everyday we fail to bring dollars and students into this University is a day lost out of our future. We have a tremendous leadership void in our Association that must be fi xed. We need the best and brightest that our Alumni membership can provide. We all need to step-up and answer the call of service to our Alma Mater. Everyone can serve. Unfortunately, we all cannot be leaders at the same time but we all can serve at the same time. No one should be threatened or denied the opportunity to serve. I leave you with a quote from John Brown Watson, the fi rst president of AM&N College: “The end of education is to know God and the laws and purposes of His universe, and to reconcile one’s life with these laws. The fi rst aim of a good college is not to teach books but the meaning and purpose of life. Hard study and the learning of books are only a means to this end. We develop power and courage and determination and we go out to achieve Truth, Wisdom, and Justice. If we do not come to this, the cost of schooling is wasted.”

May God Bless UAPBMay God Bless the UAPB National Alumni AssociationMay God Bless All of You

Respectfully,

Ceola Davis-Barnes, Class ‘70National Alumni President 2007

Summer Conference 2007

The 2007 Lawrence A. Davis, Sr. Legacy

Award Dinner

The Lawrence A. Davis, Sr. Legacy Award Dinner was a well attended affair with particular focus on the Legacies of endearing leaders who made enduring impacts on the evolution of our University. It was appropriately named the Lawrence A. Davis Sr. Legacy Award in honor of his service and devotion to the University. All attending were entertained and enlightened by our esteemed Master of Ceremony, United States Congressman Danny K. Davis of 7th Congressional District, Illinois. He kept the audience on the end of their chairs throughout the evening with interesting words of wit and wisdom. We also enjoyed the privilege of having the Honorable Mayor Carl Redus to address the occasion with insights and words of encouragement. The highlight of the evening was a motivational message by Dr. Mamie Parker, our keynote speaker. Dr. Parker shared her mother’s life lessons with us as she has shared with millions of others. Our culminating activity was the awarding of the Lawrence A. Davis, Sr. Legacy Awardto Dr. Carolyn Frazier Blakely. Dr. Blakely was selected the recipient of this prestigious award because many of her characteristics and attributes mirror that of Lawrence A. Davis, Sr. Award.

Greetings rrom the Chancellor

The Division of Academic Affairs remains resilient and productive as we end 2007. Some highlights are as follow: Two new Master’s Degrees were added; The M.S. in Agricultural Regulations and the Master’s of Art in Teaching. The Ph.D. in Aquaculture/Fisheries has received all internal approval and is now under external review. Re-accreditations were awarded by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design; the National Council for Accreditation of Teaching Education; the National Association of Industrial Technology; the National League of Nursing; and the Higher Learning Commission - North Central Association. The faculty and staff were successful in generating $7,625,948 in external funds during the fi rst nine months of 2007. These funds have added expanded opportunities and curricula enrichment for students, faculty and staff. UAPB students continued to grow and develop as professionals through integrated on-campus and external academic experiences. Five students from the School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences completed international internships during the summer at sites including Sidney, Australia, the Caribbean Island of Dominica, and Puerto Rico. A student from the School of Arts and Sciences won fi rst place in the Physics Division of the 2007 National HBCU-UP Research Conference in Washington, D.C. Two former Ronald McNair Scholars, Mr. Stanley Paul and Ms. LaTonya Garner recently received doctorates in mathematics. The University awarded degrees to 239 graduates in May 2007 and expects to confer 170 degrees in December 2007. These 409 graduates are prepared to join the legion of Golden Lions who are making a quality difference in the global society as they help keep and share the “Spirit” of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

Summer Conference: PRESENTERS

A 1994 graduate of North Carolina Central University, Perkins holds a BA in Political Science and a pair of Maters’ Degrees in Public Administration and Instructional Media.

Prior to his appointment at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, (UAPB), Perkins was in charge of aiding Division II North Carolina Central University in its transition to the Division I ranks. Perkins worked on a fundraising campaign that helped increase private donations and gifts to the NCCU athletic department.

Perkins has identifi ed UAPB’s ongoing compliance diffi culties as well as its fi nancial trouble as two issues he plans to address immediately.

Perkins and his wife Kellee, a North Carolina Central University graduate, have two children Peri Ellington (3) and Tripp III (eight months). Perkins also has a 14-year old daughter Alexia. His hobbies include playing tennis, golf and spending time with his wife and kids. He is also a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Monte Coleman’s story is truly a remarkable one. Despite not playing high school football, Coleman walked-on at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway and became the fi rst Bear in UCA history drafted into the professional football ranks when the Washington Redskins called his name in 1979. During his professional career, Coleman participated in four Super Bowls and helped the Redskins capture three NFL championships. He played in 216 games, which is the second most in Redskin history behind only defensive back Darrell Green. Coleman’s 16 years with the Washington franchise is also the second most in the team’s history behind Green. Coleman, a Pine Bluff, AR native, was named as one of the 70 greatest players in Redskin history and he was also named to the All-Madden Team. He is both a University of Central Arkansas Athletic Hall of Fame and Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame member. He also has received UCA’s highest honor – the Distinguished Alumnus Award. In 1999, he was selected by Sports Illustrated as one of the top 50 athletes in Arkansas Sports’ History.

Just recently, Coleman was recognized by the Washington Redskins during their 75th Anniversary Legends Program. The Redskins selected the “Top 22 Players” in the franchise’s history and Coleman was among those honored. After coaching the linebackers during his fi rst three seasons (2003-05) on the Golden Lions’ staff, Coleman spent the last two years serving as the defensive coordinator. Coleman and his wife, Yvette, have three children, Jasmie, Kyndall and Kyle.
