    History of Fraternities and APO

    What is Fraternity?

Phi Beta Kappa began the US fraternity system at the College of William and Mary in

1776. It was a social club with ritual, secret obligations, a motto, a grip, and a badge. These things came to characterize fraternities. Alpha Phi Omega is the only nationalservice fraternity dedicated essentially to service. Fraternity implies a common bond, aunited army that can go anywhere and conquer anything.

It is an alliance that is life-long. This unselfish sharing of ideas, interests, success, andeven failures is what fraternity is all about. APO IS a fraternity.

    What is APO?

APO is one of many nationally recognized fraternities. We began in 1925 at Lafayette

College by Frank Reed Horton. We allowed women into our fraternity in 1970 (Ourchapter allowed women as associate members in 1972. Therefore, we are Co-Ed). Fellowmembers of the fraternity, no matter what school they go to, are called brothersregardless of gender.

    What is AO?

Alpha Omicron is only one of hundreds of chapters in our country and internationally(there are chapters in the Philippines). The system of naming a chapter involves the orderof obtaining a charter, the document allowing a school to start a chapter. The firstchapter, at Lafayette College, was simple Alpha. The next chapter was Beta. We are

called Alpha Omicron. We were the first chapter in Texas, followed immediately byAlpha Rho at UT Austin.

    History of APO

The Lightbearer Frank Reed Horton fought in WWII, was greatly affected and wantedto do two things after the war:

    - Help young people get the right start in life by holding up a Standard ofManhood

    - Help nations settle their disputes in a more sensible manner than war

Horton founded APO at Lafayette College in Easton, PA, in 1925 (Alpha Chapter). He based the organization on the principles of the Boy Scouts of America, whom we arestill affiliated with today. The purpose was to create an organization for college men whocooperated with all youth members, especially scouting. It was also to include a serviceprogram.

The Chief: H. Roe Bartle was the second national president of APO, and he wasresponsible for the great expansion of APO from 18 to 109 chapters under his leadership.

    AO was chartered under Bartle.

    History of AO

    - Founded May 9, 1935 (nearly ten years after APO was founded)

    - Jarrot Harkey was our first president- Were the oldest APO chapter in Texas and second oldest in Region 7- Were one of the oldest continuously running organizations at SMU

    Girls, girls, girls

-In 1972, we allowed women as affiliate members and officers- That year we were the first chapter to introduce legislation at a national conventionregarding allowing women as full members as APO- In 1976, two national conventions after we proposed the first legislation, the

fraternity noted to allow women as full members
