Discover the World of Beekeeping Beekeeping can be a great hobby for all ages. This hands-on, in-depth, 20-hour course, taught by a UGA certified Master Beekeeper, will provide the information, hands-on experience and confidence anyone will need to succeed as a hobbyist beekeeper. This course will cover a full season of beekeeping and each participant will have the opportunity to work with a live bee colony guided by a master beekeeper. The text, The Beekeeper’s Handbook, will be provided. Thursdays Instructor: Steve Nofs March 21-May 23 6 PM 8 PM Fee: $150 Worm Farming: The Basics of Vermiculture In this three hour class you will learn how to create and sustain your own worm farm. The worm used for this class will be the “red wiggler” or Eisenia fetida. You will create your own worm farm that is yours to take home and continue to enjoy. Topics include: the life cycle of red wigglers, what they eat, where they live, how to give them water and, best of all, learn how to use red wigglers for composting, fishing, creating worm castings and directions on how to make worm tea. Each participant will receive one pound of red wigglers from juvenile size to adults, some worm cocoons or eggs, the bedding for their home, some commercial worm feed, and, of course, a container to house your worm farm. Tuesday April 9 6 PM 9 PM Fee: $40 Planning and Installing an Organic Spring Vegetable Garden Using Permaculture Methods This course offers a hands-on approach to growing delicious, healthy food year round without the use of insecticides, pesticides, or commercial fertilizers. While identifying and using material at hand to design your own home garden, you will learn native, annual, and perennial plants that do well in the challenging Georgia climate. The class will focus on sustainable design, heirloom seeds, soil building, appropriate mulches, water conservation, and aesthetics. How to plant berries, herbs, perennial and annual flower, and fruit trees for maximum yield, as well as grow your favorite vegetables, will also be included. Come and get your hands in the soil as you design and install beds, borders, and pathways to make your garden beautiful and bountiful.
