  • South Shore Arts & Northwest Indiana Symphony

Bring the Arts to EducationTheres something about creating a piece of art that just makes a body feel good. Each year, thousands of children experience this feeling as they participate in a South Shore Arts classroom visit or a Northwest Indiana Symphony music program. One of the most rewarding outcomes of these experiences is seeing the faces of children as they successfully complete a project or try out a musical instrument. Hearing comments such as This is the best day of my life, I want to live here, or Can you come back tomorrow? is incredibly gratifying. It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but knowing that so many children participated in these art encounters is a remarkable tribute to all those who support the arts. South Shore Arts and the Northwest Indiana Symphony collectively served over 33,680 students in the past year. The South Shore Arts everykid program served over 28,000 students alone, most of it at no cost. By weaving visual arts into a reading activity, we have developed creative and effective tools to help teachers improve students English language arts skills, encourage self-respect, tolerance, and other social issues, while at the same time developing a life-long love for reading and art. By partnering with schools, youth-serving social service agencies, libraries and

municipalities, we reach a vast number of students by taking our instructors and supplies directly to them. The everykid program is conducted throughout the region on a large and accessible scale. By partnering with schools and youth-serving agencies, South Shore Arts reaches many more students by taking the instructors and supplies directly to them. Under the umbrella of everykid, many individual programs are tailored to meet particular objectives at appropriate grade levels. Thanks to the success of Polar Express, a holiday-themed reading and art program serving over 3,300 first grade students every year, we have developed a series of literacy-based art programs for the 2nd, 3rd and now 4th grades. The Skin You Live In, written by Chicago-based author Michael Tyler and illustrated by Hammond native David Lee Csicsko, gives some 7,500 second grade students the chance to explore the concept of skin and celebrate the ways in which we are unique, similar, happy and accepting. In the corresponding art project, students create their own self-portraits in the style of the books illustrations. We have expanded into the third grade, serving 4,850 with Michael Recycle, an environmental conservation story, in which the hero learns to correct his heavily carbon-foot-printed ways to become environmentally sensitive.

  • Students utilize recycled materials donated by Huhtamaki, a Hammond manufacturer of the bowls produced for the restaurant chain Chipotle, to complete an art project. We have recently launched H is for Hoosier, a literacy program on Indiana history, a major unit of the fourth grade curriculum. The Northwest Indiana Symphony recognizes the importance of music education in increasing awareness and expanding audiences, instilling in young people an appreciation for and training in classical music. The Symphony provides unique experiences that open a new world for many children and foster a life-long love for music. Children have a chance to meet professional musicians, who allow them to handle and try out all the various instruments of the orchestra. These are experiences that open their eyes and minds to the world of music from a performers point of view. Education concerts reach children who might not otherwise have the chance to experience a classical concert performed by professional musicians. Presented during the school day at the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville, the concerts are many students first and only exposure to a live orchestra. Nearly 4,500 students attended the concerts this past November. The concerts, together with the lesson plans contained in the education program materials, assist teachers in satisfying the requirements of Standards 6, 7, 8, and 9 of the Indiana State Standards for Music Education. Corresponding teacher packets provide cross-curricular teaching materials that enhance the concert experience and connect music to other academic content. Through all of these varied experiences, children witness first-hand the power of the arts. The Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra provides young musicians with a challenging environment for musical growth. In addition to working with professional

conductors and musicians, Youth Orchestra members are given the opportunity to enjoy the enrichment and challenge of performing with other serious and dedicated young musicians. Toot n Doodle and Rhythm n Hues for second and third grade students are conducted in partnership with VanderCook College of Music. Over 650 children are introduced to the four instrument families and given a chance to play the instruments. The Annual Young Peoples Competition gives students the opportunity to audition to perform at a Symphony concert. The competition provides young musicians with a significant audition and performance opportunity and showcases the musical talent of Northwest Indiana and Illinois. Altogether, the Symphonys educational programming and community outreach serve approximately 6,000 children and adults every year.

  • Photojournalist Janet Macoska paid South Shore Arts a visit in time for the VIP opening of Its Only Rock and Roll But I Like It. The exhibit was organized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. Janets work has appeared in Rolling Stone, Creem, People, 16, Entertainment Weekly, the New York Times and the London Times. The Kinks, Led Zeppelin and David Bowie have used her photos on their albums, and her photo of Paul McCartney hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Janet gave two free lectures discussing her history, her craft and her career, commenting on specific photographs and the stories behind them. She concluded her stay by making a special appearance at the VIP Party on Tuesday, November 27, with over 120 guests in attendance.

  • For 39 years, South Shore Arts has presented the Tri-County Junior/Senior High School Art Exhibition, recognizing excellence in the artistic achievements of young people and the teachers who nurture within them an appreciation and awareness for beauty, creativity, and diversity of thought. The first high school exhibition for grades 9-12 was held back in 1974 under the board presidency of Anne Beckman, but it was not until the 20th Annual TriCounty exhibition in 1995 that seventh and eighth grade students began exhibiting alongside their upperclassmen. Sixth graders were added to the exhibit in 2008.

Every year, several thousand dollars in monetary prizes are awarded to student participants, along with the Berwanger Scholarship for a graduating high school senior planning to attend a university or college for the purpose of studying art. Trophies are presented for the best overall school display on both the junior and senior high school levels. These awards have not only increased in number but also in value over the years, thanks to the ongoing generosity and support of the patrons of South Shore Arts. This has enabled South Shore Arts to recognize student excellence, while also providing students with the funding to pursue art and art-related degrees at the university level.

For its first 30 years, the exhibition was open to three counties, Lake and Porter in Indiana and south suburban Cook County in Illinois, hence the name TriCounty; however, beginning in 2007, it was expanded to include schools in LaPorte County as well. The juried exhibit features original artwork created by students in grades seven through twelve from public, private, home-based, and parochial schools.

The jurying process begins in the schools, where teachers select the work and submit a list to be entered into the exhibit. They are then invited to install the students work in the gallery at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts. Through the years, the number of schools participating has remained fairly consistent, but the number of students participating has increased to such an extent that South Shore Arts 5,000-square-foot gallery has almost become too small to accommodate them.

For the past several years, South Shore Arts has invited teachers and their guests to a special private exhibit preview and reception prior to the annual Sunday afternoon awards ceremony. This new tradition has become a great place for teachers to network and share ideas with one another.

The TriCounty Junior/Senior High School Art Exhibition has become one of the most popular exhibitions at South Shore Arts. Viewers young and old flock to the gallery to see the innovative and truly creative works of art. South Shore Arts looks forward to keeping this crowd-pleasing favorite around for many more years to come!

The 39th Annual Tri-County Jr/Sr High School Art Exhibition will run April 28May 26, 2013, with an awards reception on Sunday, May 5, from 1-3pm. If you would like more information regarding this exhibit or how to enter your students, please contact Mary McClelland 219/836.1839 ext. 108 or [email protected].

  • Its been nearly two decades since South Shore Arts Executive Director John Cain presented his first holiday reading, and the annual luncheon continues to attract around 350 guests every year. What began as an event attended by an audience composed primarily of ladies who lunch (and heres to them!) has since turned into something that both men and women look forward to and make time to attend, despite the fact that its held in the middle of the workday! While there remains a handful of guests who were there that very first year, the audience has grown exponentially to include many new friends.

This years reading was held on Tuesday, November 13, with the theme Home for the Hols, and featured A Celebritys Guide to Celebrating the Birth of Jesus from Tina Feys 2011 collection Bossy Pants, and Twas the Night Before Christmas in the Railroad Station by Patrick Dennis, the celebrated author of Auntie Mame.

  • On November 1, 2012, the Indiana Coalition for the Arts Foundation (INCAF) honored the winners of the 2012 Community Arts Leadership Awards for their part in advancing the cause of community and local arts in Indiana. INCAF celebrated these four outstanding citizens at a ceremony held at the Indianapolis Arts Garden. This years selection process for the Community Arts Leadership Awards was highly competitive, with nearly 50 nominations received.

Honorees included Arts Professional Gloria Tuohy, Crown Point; Arts Advocate Alane Meis, Terre Haute; Arts Educator Deborah Asante, Indianapolis; and Arts Volunteer Pam Hicks, Greenwood.

Arts Professional Gloria Tuohy is Artistic Director/CEO of Indiana Ballet Theatre, which she founded 33 years ago. A native of England whose father was a Grenadier Guard at Buckingham Palace, she has spent her life working with the performing arts, children and making people happy. Since falling in love with an American in 1973, she has been busy building dreams and making amazing things come to life in the arts. Her career of professional dance, teaching and artistic direction spans over 50 years.

Former IBT students have found jobs in the entertainment world and many have been accepted into programs at Joffrey, Interlochen, Butler University, Canadas Royal Ballet Company and Virginia School of Arts. Glorias complete vision is to have a professional ballet company in Northwest Indiana located in a historic 20,000-square-foot building she convinced the Lake County government to give as IBTs permanent home and a community arts incubator.

Arts Advocate Alane Meis has progressively driven the arts community in the Wabash Valley for decades. Consistently a member of many arts-related boards, including the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra and the Swope Art Museum, she also served as the chair of the Indiana Arts Commission. Thirty-two years ago, she was a founding board member of Arts Illiana. Meis has been honored often in the past for her volunteerism and community service, including receiving the Sagamore of the Wabash twice.

Arts Educator Deborah Asante has dedicated her life to teaching and sharing the value of culture and heritage through the performing arts, and developing and educating young minds

through the arts. Asante is an actress, writer, director, Young Audiences of Indiana Teaching Artist and award-winning storyteller.

In 1990, she founded the Asante Childrens Theatre (ACT) and continues to serve as the artistic director. ACT primarily serves youth who are considered at-risk or underserved by cultivating an appreciation for African and African-American performance art. Annually, Asante writes and directs three main stage productions and through ACT donates blocks of tickets to youth organizations and schools. Through ACT, thousands of youth have directly benefitted from her teachings either as participants or audience members. ACT success stories include Emmy-nominated choreographer and Broadway cast member Jeffery Page.

Arts Volunteer Pam Hicks, a native of Hammond, has been referred to as a volunteer extraordinaire, one who has given her expertise, unlimited time, treasure and talent to a multitude of organizations for 55 years on the national, state and local levels, with a major emphasis on the arts. As a fellow volunteer stated, Pam doesnt hesitate to take on a leadership role, but she is also in the trenches doing the legwork.

Currently a member of the Indiana Arts Commission, she has served on the Indiana Symphony Society board and is the immediate past president of the ISO Associations executive board, as well as the Alliance of the Indianapolis Museum of Art and Hoosier Salon Patrons Association. She was a founding member of the Greater Greenwood Arts Council and the Johnson County Community Foundation. A Franklin College graduate, she is past president of its alumni council and association and recipient of its distinguished alumni award. She serves on Franklins board and for 29 years was curator of its art collection.
