John Kamanga – Thursday, April 11 2013 Cincinnati Zoo Wildlife Conservation Award RecipientCoexistence, Collaboration, and Culture. The story of the Maasai of the South Rift ValleyJohn Kamanga is a Maasai elder and chairman of the Olkiramation Group ranch in the South Rift Valley of Kenya. He also coordinates conservation projects for the Kenyan government and other international organizations. His most remarkable work is in his community, where humans still coexist with wildlife amid powerful social and environmental pressures. He is Jonah Western’s African Conservation Centre partner in the region, where the Cincinnati Zoo has been involved for a decade.

Steven C. Amstrup, PhD – Wednesday, May 15 Saving polar bears: The Problem and the CureSteven C. Amstrup is Chief Scientist & Vice President of Conservation Science for Polar Bears International. Dr. Amstrup joined Polar Bear International after 30 years leading Polar Bear Research at the U.S. Geological Survey in Alaska. He will describe polar bear ecology, emphasizing their reliance on sea ice for capturing prey, and discuss global warming basics posing a threat to polar bears, before presenting solutions to this problem.

Colleen Begg, PhD – Wednesday, March 27Meeting Face to Face to see Eye to Eye: Promoting Coexistence between Lions and People in Niassa Reserve, MozambiqueColleen Begg and her husband, Keith, have worked on researching and conserving carnivores in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Mozambique. In 2003 they founded the Niassa Lion Project in the remote wilderness of the Niassa Reserve in Mozambique. Through film, photography, research, and field conservation they are working to secure the large carnivores in their remote region to conserve one of the Earth’s “Last of the Wild” places.

Olivia Judson, PhD – Wednesday, May 1 The Planet MakersOlivia Judson is an evolutionary biologist and writer based at Imperial College London. A graduate of Stanford and Oxford, she is the author of Dr Tatiana’s Sex Advice to All Creation: The Definitive Guide to the Evolutionary Biology of Sex, which has been translated into more than 15 languages and was also made into a tv show. She is presently working on a second book.

William Conway, PhD – Wednesday, April 17Zoos and Wildlife Conservation; a defining moment?Dr. William Conway, is the all-time great lion of the zoo industry, as well as a renowned thought leader on wildlife conservation. He served as Director of the Bronx Zoo for 43 years, where he led the transformation into modern zoo naturalistic exhibitry, 50 years ago, and since has built the Wildlife Conservation Society into one of the world’s leading conservation organizations. Dr Conway will discuss the challenges of keeping wildlife in an ever more crowded world of people.

4-5 YEAR OLDS WHERE IN THE WORLD? All aboard! Campers will take a journey from the North to South Pole and every habitat in between! Along the way they’ll experience animal encounters, hikes to animal habitats from every continent, and even get to feed some long-necked neighbors and some colorful feathered friends! Campers will choose adventures that require teamwork to understand animal populations and what information should be collected to help rescue these animals. Everyday camper’s will rescue a different animal, make measurements, take weight and estimate population sizes using field techniques.

You’ll get a chance to get down and dirty and creative with hands-on activities, animal demonstrations, & behind-the-scenes tours. We’ll also round out the experience with some guest speakers who will give you a better understanding of the variety of zoo careers that are here at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.

We’ll take a look at feet, fins, flippers, and wings and see how animals move around their world. Each day, we’ll explore animal locomotion with hikes in the Zoo, crafts, games, and close encounters with some live animal “movers.” Whether it’s by land, sea, or air, you’ll little one will enjoy this action-filled summer Zoo adventure!

FUR, FEATHERS AND SCALESAre all animals covered in skin like ours? No way! Animals havedifferent coverings that help them slither, hide, hover, and so much more! FEAST FOR THE BEASTS Termites, durian fruits, and elephant dung are just a few of the unusual tasty “treats” that animals like to eat! We’ll discover why tails are so important to animals by trying on some different animal tails and meeting some special animal guests with unusual tails. We’ll even make a tail that you can wear home! FAMILY CAMP OUTFamilies with children 5 years old and up are invited to pitch a tent behind the Giraffe Ridge exhibit. Then we will prowl the Zoo for night creatures, cats, and crawlies. This program focuses on behavior and physical adaptations of animals, especially nocturnal animals. Bring your own tent and sleeping bag and camp out under the stars at the Zoo!

12-14 YEAR OLDSBACKSTAGE PASS JR Is your 12-14 year old looking for a more in-depth, once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Zoo? These specially designed classes allow an opportunity for an up-close and personal look at some of the places the Zoo animals call home, and most even include an encounter with Zoo animals! All participants will receive a keepsake backstage pass nametag on a zoo-themed lanyard as a souvenir of their adventure.Note: Due to the nature of these programs, age limits must be adhered to. In addition, due to space restrictions, parents cannot be accommodated in behind-the-scenes areas, unless otherwise noted.

FEATHERED FRIENDS How many fish does a puffin eat for lunch? Where do the Zoo’s lorikeets go in the winter? How do you get a job taking care of such cool birds? THE HIDDEN ZOO What does the Zoo do with animals that are between exhibits or need privacy in order to successfully breed? Come visit the Zoo’s Mast Farm to find out! Don’t forget your camera, because during this program, you will get a behind- the-scenes look at rare animals such as the Zoo’s cheetahs and rare birds that call the farm home. You will also get the inside scoop on when there will be more baby cheetahs on the way!

Note: due to this class’ off-grounds location, one parent driver accompanying each pay ing participant may also pay to participate. All visitors to the farm must be accompanied by Zoo staff at all times; therefore, drivers who do not choose to participate are not permitted to remain on farm-grounds during their child’s program. We apologize for the inconvenience.

During the course of this 4 week program we will explore the diversity found within the class of mammals and the amazing adaptations these animals have that allow them to thrive in their habitat. We will go in depth into some of your favorite mammals at the Zoo and learn about their ecology, biology and behavior. BEASTLY BEHAVIORSHop like a bunny, creep like a caterpillar, fly like a bat. Animals sure do move their bodies in a lot of different ways! During the course of this 4-week program, we’ll explore the different ways that animals move around their world. With dramatic play, songs, animal visitors, and hikes into the zoo, participants will not only learn about animals, but will also work on their gross and fine motor skills and social skills in a fun environment with their peers.STEPS1. In this workshop you will learn about potting soils, choosing the right plants, and how to care for a container garden. Included in the registration fee are all the materials and plants necessary to create your own movable garden masterpiece. Dress appropriately - this is a hands-on class.

Roar like a tiger. Fly like a bird. Move as slowly as a sloth. Explore the world of animals and plants in a fun new way – through yoga! You and your child will discover more about animals and plants through the practice of yoga. This fun and active program is a beginner/mid-level level class for adults and children and can serve as a great foundation for developing an interest in wildlife and fitness that can last a lifetime. Yoga mats are provided. Please bring a bottle of water and wear comfortable clothing.

LOOK BEHIND-THE-SCENES! Rhino Roundup• Meet and Greet with Nikki our Indian Rhino! Enjoy the opportu nity to feed and bath Nikki as well learn about her history and the research, led by our CREW scientists, to save her species. • Create your own painting on canvas with Nikki while learning about our operant conditioning program.• If time allows, meet the other beautiful animals the Veldt has to offer including okapi, bongo & zebra.

Elephant Extravaganza• Meet the largest animals at the Zoo (Our herd of 4 elephants) while touring our historic Elephant House!• Learn how our animals are pampered with daily baths and pedicures at the Elephant House spa! Help the keepers bathe My-thai, one of our 3 female Asian elephants, while learning about her daily care and enrichment.• Watch as My-Thai creates a one-of-a-kind painting on canvas for you to take home and enjoy.

Pool Hopping with Penguins & Sea Lions• Work with our keepers to prepare a meal for the penguins in the Bird House! Once meal prep is finished, enjoy the opportunity to feed the penguins while the birds are on public display.• Head over to our sea lion pool and work with our sea lion on his training while at the same time pro viding him with delicious enrichment. If you’re lucky, you might even get a kiss on the cheek!• Work through our medical husbandry and learn how operant conditioning helps our vets and keepers take better care of their animals on a daily basis including – teeth brushing, simulated blood draws, ultrasounds and mouth checks.
