Education Curriculum CE 4510 Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary Spring 2014 – 15 Bradley C. Thompson, PhD Tuesday - Thursday, 10:00 – 10:50 a.m. Department of Church Ministries A208 COURSE DESCRIPTION A study of educational curriculum and development. Consideration is given to choosing and writing curriculum that aids teachers in an effective Bible teaching ministry. Three hours. LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND COURSE FORMAT The course is designed to be highly interactive in the exploration of the principles and practices of writing, selecting, and evaluating educational curriculum. The student involved in this discovery learning process should be able to:

A. Identify from Scripture biblical concepts for Christian education and critique various practices in the development or selection of curriculum from a biblical worldview.

B. Understand and apply sound educational principles and practices in the planning,

organizing, selection, and evaluating of educational curriculum for all ages in a church ministry.

C. Understand the basic principles of goal setting, problem solving, planning, and budgeting

in the selection and development of curriculum.

D. Describe the necessary elements in effective curriculum.

E. Apply basic principles of curriculum assessment to the education ministry of a local church.

F. Identify program resources for curriculum development within an education ministry.

Instruction for this class will include lecture, case studies, student presentations, and student evaluation. The course is highly interactive and necessitates that all participants engage in dialogue with the issues and concerns under discussion. LEARNING ACTIVITIES AND EVALUATION The following assignments totaling 1000 points are to be completed as described below by the dates outlined in the Course Schedule. COURSE REQUIREMENTS

A. Class attendance. Attendance is a necessity in the learning process. In addition, the

classroom learning experience is enhanced by your attendance and participation. According to seminary policy, you are not allowed to accumulate more than 6 excused absences and still receive credit for any course. In addition to full absences, being tardy (entering the room after the bell has rung) will count as 1/3 of an absence; leaving class early without permission will likewise count as 1/3 of an absence. Obviously, you are responsible for all class work missed during any absence. Students studying other material will be counted absent for the class period.

NOTE: YOU WILL EARN A FINAL GRADE OF “F” IF YOU ARE ABSENT MORE THAN 9 DAYS.

B. Reading Quizzes (250 points possible). Read both texts as assigned. 10 daily reading

quizzes worth 25 points each will be given during the term. Reading quizzes cannot be taken late for excused or unexcused absences.

C. Mid-Term Examination (250 points possible). Students will earn up to 200 points for

writing a lesson of curriculum and selecting a lesson from a professional curriculum writer to present for defense in class. Further details will be provided.

D. Final Examination (250 points possible). Students will earn as many as 50 points for

evaluating various curriculum exercises presented by other students.

E. Curriculum Project (250 points possible). Students will prepare age-graded curriculum, or portions thereof, and will present their work for feedback during class.

F. Curriculum Series (300 points possible). Students will write a six-session series of

curriculum for use in teaching a discipleship class. Students may choose to write material for children, youth, or adults. Notebooks are due at the beginning of class on the day of the final examination. Late submissions (or any portion thereof) will be assessed 10 points per day, including weekends.

GRADING SCALE Your final grade for this course will be determined by adding up the total number of points on all exams and the research paper and basing them on the following scale: 985-1,000 points = A+ 965-984 points = A 945-964 points = A- 925-944 points = B+ 895-924 points = B 865-894 points = B- 835-864 points = C+ 805-834 points = C 765-804 points = C- 745-764 points = D+ 715-744 points = D 700-714 points = D- Below 700 points = F The professor for this class will be available to speak to student immediately before or after class. Students should make an appointment for a conference at any other time through the Office of the Executive Vice President (751-3032).
