Welcome to The RONDO – Spring 2014

Bath Drama

CinderellaBy Stephen Curtis

Full £10.00 Concs £8 • Community theatre Wed 15 – Sat 18 Jan • 7:30pm Sat 18 & Sun 19 Jan • 2:30pm

Do we need to tell you the story?

Let’s tell you instead that this is a traditional pantomime in the Bath Drama style. There is a familiar story for the children to follow, there is slapstick, there are simple jokes, there are subtle jokes, there are songs, sweets are distributed, there are three actual princesses, there is magic and wonderment, there is even technical wizardry as Cinderella’s three-dimensional and roadworthy carriage is constructed from ... but that may be giving too much away.

Come and see Cinderella and brighten up a January day.

Fresh and fruity! That’s how we’re feeling here at The Rondo this Spring. As the buds ripen and the shoots, er, shoot, we’re all set to leap forward with a fantastic variety of new and exciting shows.

We’ve spanking new comedy, from the likes of Sean Hughes, Mitch Benn, Norman Lovett, John robins – and Rondo fave Robin Ince, who’s dragging previewing the fifteen or so new shows currently rattling around in his brain. We’ve crisp, fresh music from Inu, Cliff Stapleton and Keith James. We’ve refreshing, newly-picked theatre from Red Ladder, Reform, ‘Owdyado & Two Way Mirror (to name but a few...)

And then, we have the icing on the cake that is the Bath Comedy Festival – with some tremendous acts, including... well, have a look for yourself, but we have the funniest man in Britain!

So, come on over to The Rondo this Spring. It’s all fresh, vibrant, zesty and new!

Mitch Benn Is The 37th BeatleWed 22 Jan • 8pm • Full £15 Concs £12 • Stand-Up Comedy

Mitch’s new show combines his Scouse upbringing with his love of music and a lifelong obsession with Liverpool’s most famous sons. It is most definitely not a tribute show and while his affection for his subjects is well documented, expect the satirical twists for which Mitch is well known. As Mitch himself says: “Many have claimed the title “Fifth Beatle”. They can’t all be right; some were righter than others...”

“Anyone who likes music, hates Simon Cowell and likes learning new things will love it” Chortle

Fri 24 Jan • 8pm • Full £12 Concs £10 • music

Cliff Stapleton is prolific composer of a beautiful and hypnotic music created for the hurdy-gurdy. He performs both solo and in groups, for theatre and for film. His past work ranges wildly from contributions to the powerful folk dance style of Blowzabella to the electronic otherworldly landscapes of Coil.

Wrong ‘Un By Boff Whalley

Fri 31 Jan 2014 • 8pm • Full £12 Concs £10 Professional theatre

February 1918, and after several decades of protest and four years of bloody war Parliament is poised to grant what the suffragettes have demanded and fought for – votes for all women. After years of direct action, arrest, imprisonment and force-feeding, it seems their time has come.

Wrong ‘Un tells of the adventures of Annie Wilde, a Lancashire mill-girl galvanised by a rousing mixture of injustice, conviction, self-doubt and fear on her journey from schoolroom to prison cell and beyond in a musical drama that draws on class, privilege, hope and disappointment in wartime England.

Sean Hughes In The Award Winning “Penguins”Wed 29 Jan • 8pm • Full £15 Concs £13 • Stand-Up Comedy

“At his funniest and most profound.” The Sunday Herald

Sean Hughes is back on tour following a critically acclaimed and audience packed run of his new show Penguins at The Edinburgh Fringe. Sean was awarded the Herald Angels Award for Best Comedy show.

This is a show so full of surprises, and hidden twists and recurring themes that you find yourself mapping it out hours later. Sean takes us back to his Dublin upbringing and the, at times, utter awkwardness of teenage life

Weaving in his family, his school days and the business of friendship and tying it all in to the present. It’s brilliant and multi-layered –and it really is up there with his Perrier award winning show A One Night Stand. Why does society tell us how to behave and react? What does it have to do with Penguins? Buy a ticket and all will be revealed.

“For quick laughs look elsewhere, but for something that leaves more of an impression. Hughes is your man.” Chortle

Core Theatre Productions celebrate the 10th anniversary of their inaugural production, with a new devised piece based on and inspired by fairy tales and the stories that weave between them.

The cast of At the Forest’s Edge have explored a variety of tales to bring to life an entertaining look at the darker side of human nature with this brand new piece of theatre.

My Romantic History By D.C. Jackson

Wed 12 Feb • 8pm • Full £12 Concs £10 • Professional theatre

If you haven’t met someone by the time you graduate, you’re going to marry someone from your work. It’s that simple. Do you know how they get animals to breed in captivity? They put them in the same cage.

Tom’s been head-hunted for a new job. He owns three suits and a modest amount of kitchen equipment. Amy’s got a career, a Fiat Punto and a flat full of stuff. To all intents and purposes she’s a fully-functioning grown up

When Tom and Amy get together after a boozy office party, it seems like they might be able to make a go of it. But soon the ghosts of relationships past begin to interfere with the here and now. And getting over our romantic histories is easier said than done.

Robin Ince: Three Works in Progress at Once thu 13 Feb • 8pm • Full £12 Concs £10 • Stand-Up Comedy

In further acts of madness, Robin Ince is working on seven new shows for 2014. Never knowingly under running he is coming to The Rondo to try out new pieces on his show about the human brain, another involving railing against art and media, and then some stories and songs of science accompanied by Grace Petrie.

Three shows in one, maybe more – like a Russian Doll. A very confused Russian doll.

Antigone By Jean Anouilh

Wed 19 – Sat 22 Feb • 8:00pm • Full £10 Concs £8 • Community theatre

441 BC – Athens: Sophocles brings to the stage the story of Antigone, the Theban princess put to death by King Creon for religious defiance of his secular law.

1944 – occupied Paris: Jean Anouilh, France’s greatest dramatist since Molière, revisits and humanises the fable. The German censor sanctions the production, seen as an apology for authoritarian rule, but Antigone’s intransigence soon becomes an inspiration for the Résistance.

2014: Where do you stand on the rights of the individual conscience, on civil disobedience versus the primacy of national security? Come and see Playing Up’s vibrant and challenging production of Anouilh’s masterpiece to find out – but you may just have changed your mind by the end of the evening….

The most enigmatic, mysterious and sub textural songwriter the English speaking world has ever known. Revered and covered by the entire music community; Leonard Cohen’s exact sense of prose, his wry humour and his courage to wrestle with the unspoken. Forgiving human frailty with the brush of each line.

His recent spectacular world tour of stadium venues has been successful beyond belief but has not, with regret, exposed the solitary inner strength of the songs in their original perfect form.

Keith James; with a lifetime reputation of performing in this exact way and an undying love of the pure song gives you a concert of this amazing material in the most intimate and sensitive way imaginable.

A police interrogation room. A woman has been detained for questioning after her boss is found dead in suspicious circumstances. In a room down the hall, her colleague also awaits an interview. Just routine questions. Just routine.

But what if the monotony of routine was responsible for pushing one of them over the edge? When does bored become bored to death (albeit someone else’s death)?

After all, perhaps it’s not unusual for employees of an adhesive supply company to feel a little … stuck.

We Will Be Free! By Neil Gore

Wed 12 & thu 13 mar • 8pm • Full £12 Concs £10 • Professional theatre

From Townsend Productions that brought you The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists last year comes a new play of the story of The Tolpuddle Martyrs.

We Will Be Free! is the true story of George and Betsy Loveless and the Dorset farm labourers that were convicted and transported by an oppressive Government for swearing a secret oath and forming a Trade Union in 1834 to fight against a succession of wage cuts inflicted by the local landowner.

This inspirational story of their determination, solidarity and courage is told using our entertaining theatrical style, political cartoon, puppetry, and the musical arrangements of revered folk singer and squeezebox player John Kirkpatrick. Emily: The Making of a Militant Suffragette By Ros Connelly

Sat 15 mar • 8pm • Full £12 Concs £10 • Professional theatre

An extraordinary woman pushed to extraordinary deeds.

Emily Wilding Davidson died under the galloping hooves of King George’s Derby horse in 1913. She was campaigning for what she believed in. This is the story of her life and the events that lead to her untimely end.

Set in the context of the struggle for women to have the vote in the first half of the twentieth century, Emily resonates with questions that still challenge the world today: repression of public protest, democracy, militancy, torture, women’s rights and self-sacrifice.

Yet at the heart of this play is a real woman with her own hopes, frustrations, humour and beliefs.

Two Way Mirror By Arthur Miller

thu 20 & Fri 21 mar • 8pm • Full £12 Concs £10 • Professional theatre

Arthur Miller’s intimate two-hander Two-Way Mirror is 2 short plays said to be inspired by his relationship with Marilyn Monroe.

Elegy for a Lady is a moving encounter between a customer trying to buy a gift for his dying mistress and a proprietress, who curiously takes on the characteristics of the mistress.

In contrast Some Kind of Love Story is an almost tongue in cheek pastiche of film noir and deals with a private investigator and his relationship with a prostitute who may hold the secrets to the case- a compelling study of two people destined by their mutual dependence to tear one another apart.

Static By Tom Nicholas

“A clever script, with a sterling performance.” The Guardian

Static brings together brilliant storytelling with verbatim news reports to tell a coming of age story that spans a decade. From watching the World Trade Centre fall live on television to the top of Tory HQ; through talking to girls at drunken teenage parties and coming home with bloody noses.

Written in response to student demonstrations of recent years, it asks what it takes for a generation so comfortable interacting from behind a screen to open their doors and get out on the streets.

Tangled Minds By The Rondo Writers Network

Sat 22 mar • 8pm • Full £5 • Community theatre

“Like many couples, we each constructed ways to be. Strategies and sometimes compromises that would enable us to be part of a pair. Sometimes we lost a bit more than we were able to give, or gave up way too much, or felt abandoned. Sometimes we got really angry. But even when I was mad, I was never bored. We learned to forgive each other. And somehow, for 21 years, we tangled our minds and hearts together.”

Laurie Anderson on Lou Reed (Rolling Stone November 2013)

Tangled Minds is the latest project from the Rondo Writers Network, commissioned and directed by Roughhouse Theatre’s Shane Morgan.

Using Lou Reed’s seminal album Transformer as a structure, each writer has taken a track as a starting point and has produced a 10 minute piece based on their track.

Using research, personal anecdotes and current affairs, Tangled Minds weaves together a series of different stories and is underscored by one of the 20th Century’s most influential albums.

The Rondo Writers Network is group of South West based writers, supported by the Rondo Theatre, the home of new writing in the South West.

This is a rehearsed script in hand performance.

But Nora is concealing a terrible secret from her past which will return to haunt her, with extraordinary consequences for her marriage, her family and her life.

This production will take a fresh look at Ibsen’s ground-breaking masterpiece, setting it in the 1950s when post war austerity was slowly giving way to consumerism, but the social liberation of the Swinging Sixties had not yet swung into life.
