Do we need to tell you the story?

Let’s tell you instead that this is a traditional pantomime in the Bath Drama style. There is a familiar story for the children to follow, there is slapstick, there are simple jokes, there are subtle jokes, there are songs, sweets are distributed, there are three actual princesses, there is magic and wonderment, there is even technical wizardry as Cinderella’s three-dimensional and roadworthy carriage is constructed from ... but that may be giving too much away.

Come and see Cinderella and brighten up a January day.

Fresh and fruity!That’s how we’re feeling here at The Rondo this Spring. As the buds ripen and the shoots, er, shoot, we’re all set to leap forward with a fantastic variety of new and exciting shows.

We’ve spanking new comedy, from the likes of Sean Hughes, Mitch Benn, Norman Lovett, John robins – and Rondo fave Robin Ince, who’s dragging previewing the fifteen or so new shows currently rattling around in his brain. We’ve crisp, fresh music from Inu, Cliff Stapleton and Keith James. We’ve refreshing, newly-picked theatre from Red Ladder, Reform, ‘Owdyado & Two Way Mirror (to name but a few...)

And then, we have the icing on the cake that is the Bath Comedy Festival – with some tremendous acts, including... well, have a look for yourself, but we have the funniest man in Britain!

His past work ranges wildly from contributions to the powerful folk dance style of Blowzabella to the electronic otherworldly landscapes of Coil.

441 BC – Athens: Sophocles brings to the stage the story of Antigone, the Theban princess put to death by King Creon for religious defiance of his secular law.

1944 – occupied Paris: Jean Anouilh, France’s greatest dramatist since Molière, revisits and humanises the fable. The German censor sanctions the production, seen as an apology for authoritarian rule, but Antigone’s intransigence soon becomes an inspiration for the Résistance.

2014: Where do you stand on the rights of the individual conscience, on civil disobedience versus the primacy of national security? We Will Be Free! is the true story of George and Betsy Loveless and the Dorset farm labourers that were convicted and transported by an oppressive Government for swearing a secret oath and forming a Trade Union in 1834 to fight against a succession of wage cuts inflicted by the local landowner.

This inspirational story of their determination, solidarity and courage is told using our entertaining theatrical style, political cartoon, puppetry, and the musical arrangements of revered folk singer and squeezebox player John Kirkpatrick. The performers are Neil Gore and Elizabeth Eves, best actress nominee Edinburgh Fringe/The Stage Awards 2013.

Emily Wilding Davidson died under the galloping hooves of King George’s Derby horse in 1913. She was campaigning for what she believed in. This is the story of her life and the events that lead to her untimely end.

Set in the context of the struggle for women to have the vote in the first half of the twentieth century, Emily resonates with questions that still challenge the world today: repression of public protest, democracy, militancy, torture, women’s rights and self-sacrifice.

Yet at the heart of this play is a real woman with her own hopes, frustrations, humour and beliefs.

Arthur Miller’s intimate two-hander Two-Way Mirror is 2 short plays said to be inspired by his relationship with Marilyn Monroe.

Elegy for a Lady is a moving encounter between a customer trying to buy a gift for his dying mistress and a proprietress, who curiously takes on the characteristics of the mistress.

In contrast Some Kind of Love Story is an almost tongue in cheek pastiche of film noir and deals with a private investigator and his relationship with a prostitute who may hold the secrets to the case- a compelling study of two people destined by their mutual dependence to tear one another apart.

Written in response to student demonstrations of recent years, it asks what it takes for a generation so comfortable interacting from behind a screen to open their doors and get out on the streets.

Tangled Minds By The Rondo Writers Network

Sometimes we lost a bit more than we were able to give, or gave up way too much, or felt abandoned. Sometimes we got really angry. But even when I was mad, I was never bored. We learned to forgive each other. And somehow, for 21 years, we tangled our minds and hearts together.”

Tangled Minds is the latest project from the Rondo Writers Network, commissioned and directed by Roughhouse Theatre’s Shane Morgan.

Using Lou Reed’s seminal album Transformer as a structure, each writer has taken a track as a starting point and has produced a 10 minute piece based on their track.

Using research, personal anecdotes and current affairs, Tangled Minds weaves together a series of different stories and is underscored by one of the 20th Century’s most influential albums.

The Rondo Writers Network is group of South West based writers, supported by the Rondo Theatre, the home of new writing in the South West.

This is a rehearsed script in hand performance.

A Doll’s House By Henrik Ibsen

To the neighbours, the Helmers are the essence of respectability. The bank manager Torvald, his wife Nora and their three children seem perfectly normal, happy and settled. But Nora is concealing a terrible secret from her past which will return to haunt her, with extraordinary consequences for her marriage, her family and her life.

This production will take a fresh look at Ibsen’s ground-breaking masterpiece, setting it in the 1950s when post war austerity was slowly giving way to consumerism, but the social liberation of the Swinging Sixties had not yet swung into life.

Politically Incorrect is a 90 minute show of the best-loved songs of the master satirist Tom Lehrer. Originally written over 50 years ago Lehrer’s songs and his irreverent attitude have survived the passage of time, though his satire is now perhaps darker and more politically incorrect than that of most of today’s wits would risk.

Join pianist, vocalist and all round entertainer Peter Gill in a wonderful performance, reliving the golden days of cutting satire to hear such song-writing gems as Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, I Got it from Agnes, The Masochism Tango, The Irish Bllad, I Hold Your Hand in Mine, Pollution, Smut, When You Are Old and Grey, Oedipus Rex and plenty more.

RAW: RONDO Acting WorkshopsSelected Tuesdays @ The Rondo Theatre; 7:45pm for 8pm start.

The Rondo Acting Workshops provide a welcoming and inspiring environment to explore and develop performing skills. The workshops are designed to be drop-in and self-contained, so you can just turn up on the door to whatever takes your fancy. From Shakespeare’s verse-made-easy, to physical theatre and non-scary improvisation, the Rondo workshops are ideal for beginners interested in learning more, and professionals looking to refresh their skills.

Become a RONDO VolunteerActing as a Rondo Theatre volunteer is a great way of getting closer to the theatre, music, comedy and other fantastic events on offer at this fantastic venue. In return, you get to see the shows for free, as well as to make new friends and socialise.

Our volunteers work mainly as bar staff or on front of house and are an essential part of the success of The Rondo. Volunteering normally means working on two or three shows a month. It’s great fun – and you get to see a huge variety of performances for free!

Rondo Writers NetworkMondays at 8pm from January - April

Age 18 upwards. 7.30pm. £40 per term.

The Rondo hosts a playwriting forum for anyone who writes scripts, at any level. The perfect opportunity to share ideas, identify problems and work through some of the tricks of the trade. There will also be visits from theatre professionals to give advice on getting your work shown. Led by Shane Morgan.

RONDO Drama Clubcreate, develop, perform

Rondo Drama Club is a unique experience where your children are encouraged to share their creative ideas and work together to use the best of them to devise a totally original play. They then get the chance to improvise, rehearse and, finally, perform it under the lights on the famous Rondo Stage.

The sessions are run by Paulo Baigent, an experienced theatre director, educator and drama workshop leader. Rondo Drama Club’s weekly sessions take place at St. Stephen’s School, Lansdown with dress rehearsals and end of term performances at the Rondo Theatre itself. At Rondo Drama Club we are committed to raising confidence and self-esteem in a fun and nurturing environment.

So if your children are into drama, love to have fun, are full of ideas and eager to share them, then book them in for our next term at The Rondo Drama Club.

Latecomers: For security reasons, it may not be possible to admit latecomers. So please be prompt!

Access: The main entrance to The Rondo has excellent disabled access. We have a disabled toilet and the front row is available for wheelchairs. Pre-booking recommended.
