Hello Fellow Alumni!I hope our second bi-annual Alumni Magazine finds you enjoying the summer months! The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh campus is now quiet as students are off exploring the world, taking a trip down a lazy river, working to pay next year’s tuition, or just enjoying time with family and friends. Although the campus is quiet now, the past four months were packed with community growth, unity activities, the building of friendships, and the continuation and development of traditions.

Recruitment this semester went extremely well. We had 22 men join our fraternity community this spring and 31 new ladies join our sorority community, bringing all four of our NPC sororities to total (53) for the second semester in a row! Our multicultural groups grew by 50% this semester as well! What a great accomplishment for all of our groups. I was very proud of the hard work all of the chapters put into recruitment throughout the entire semester, as it paid off! We hope to continue down this path of growth and expansion throughout the fall semester as well.

This semester, the Alumni Magazine will focus on the all of the major events and programs held throughout the spring 2014 semester. You will get to read about our educational programming, our traditional events, and the co-sponsorships the students created that continue to encourage campus partnerships and relationships to grow and flourish. You will also receive a recap from each of the 11 organizations we currently have on campus. They will be sharing information about their individual recruitment efforts, the best spring event they hosted, and their excitement to return to campus in the fall of 2014 to continue the great work they started!

I encourage you to read through the magazine and see what is happening at your “home away from home” and, if your chapter is still active, to reach out to your specific chapter’s alumni chair so you can receive information about the great new alumni programming coming from our individual chapters. I know they would love to connect with and hear from you!

Thank you for reading and I look forward to connecting at alumni events throughout the summer and fall or through the Fall 2014 Alumni Magazine!

RecruitmentThis spring semester, the Greek community decided they wouldn’t let the cold weather stop them from meeting new people! A Meet the Greeks event was hosted by Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council where anyone interested in going Greek was invited to come and spend time learning about the community and meeting its members. This event was a huge success with over 70 students in attendance. The chapters then continued individual recruitment efforts and were incredibly successful in finding quality students to join our ranks. The bids extended this semester included:

Educational ProgramsOur spring educational programs focused on loving and respecting yourself and others. Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council hosted four events this semester on this topic: SAFE Training, Mike Domitz, Love Your Body, and Life Size Game Night: Hungry Hungry Hippos. SAFE training is an event that educates students on how to create inclusive environments in our chapters for members of the LGBTQ community. The program teaches them how to use inclusive language in their recruitment efforts and provides a safe space for them to ask questions they would not have the opportunity to ask in other settings. Over 50% of our Greek community is SAFE trained and we hope that this number will continue to grow throughout next year. We also hope this will allow any student to feel comfortable joining the Greek community. The second educational program the Greek community participated in was a co-sponsored program with the Women’s Advocacy Council (WAC) and Campus Awareness for Relationship Education (CARE). Mike Domitz spoke to almost 150 sorority women about how to respect their bodies, build strong relationships, ask for consent in partnerships, and gave tips and tricks to the students to make relationships “Fun for Everyone”, the title of his presentation. The third educational program hosted was all about loving who you are and treating yourself and others with respect. Geneva Murray, Director of the Women’s Center, was the presenter and brought a new lens to the subject for our students. She not only spoke about our assumptions we have about each other during recruitment and just everyday life but also how the media teaches us that these assumptions are ok and correct. The students were able to reflect on their own self-appreciation and also learn ways to incorporate self-love into their daily routines and with their brothers and sisters. Lastly, the most unique educational program hosted this semester, was a life size version of Hungry Hungry Hippos. This event was a partnership with Disability Awareness Week, Diversity and Inclusion Programs, and the Disability Services Office. The childhood game was brought to life with over 1,200 plastic two inch balls spread around the room and student being tied into bungee cords running to collect as many balls as possible in the time allotted. Teams of four students completed in rounds collecting balls and answering trivia questions based on disability terms, policies, history, and how to be inclusive organizations for students with disabilities.

Leadership Development Training

The students elected to the highest leadership positions in the community on Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council were very fortunate to attend the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values Conference hosted in Indianapolis, IN where Greek leaders from across the country came together to learn how to bring progress back to their communities on campus. This year, the students brought back ideas to implement new programs in the areas of alternative break trips, 365 recruitment, improved risk management training, and public relations campaigns. Even though these trips are costly, they are invaluable for the incoming councils to attend for training and igniting passion. If you are interested in helping even more students attend this and other beneficial training programs, please email [email protected] learn more.

Greek 101

This semester new members came together for a four hour educational journey with upper-classmen mentors. They participated in activities about values, conflict resolution, how to be a successful Greek student, collaboration, the Greek alphabet, and the history of Greek Life at UWO. This semester, we were fortunate to have Ed Bianchina, the father of Anthony Bianchina (Delta Chi new member), join us during dinner to provide some advice to our new members from his fraternity experience with Delta Chi at Northwest Missouri State University. It is not often we are lucky to have a triple legacy join our community. It was our honor to have Ed on campus. We have a great group of new members and look forward to seeing where they take this community in the next three to four years!

Greek Olympics

A tradition added to the Greek community in the spring of 2013 at Oshkosh is the annual Greek Olympics competition. The event was created to continue to build unity between chapters and members. “Countries” are made up of students from all different chapters and the event provides a fun atmosphere for students to play “Minute to Win It” type games. Some highlights from this year (2014) were the dizzy bat competition and placing an oreo on your forehead and getting it into your mouth without using your hands. New connections were made and fun was had by all who attended! Can’t wait to see what inventive games are created for the 2015 Spring Greek Olympic Games!

Greek Week 2014 was themed after The Hunger Games and aptly titled “The Greek Games” and it was a blast! The entire community showed up in huge numbers throughout the week with events held April 5th-11th.

For Service Saturday, we had students volunteer at the local Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. They cleaned the outside of building, doing landscaping work. They also helped inside the store by organizing materials, moving larger objects from the donation section to the main floor, and by chatting with customers as they shopped. The students had a great time and the store really appreciated the help. We also had a few students help with the Habitat for Humanity brat and hamburger sale at Lowe’s Home Improvement. They cooked the food, sold the items, and interacted with local Habitat volunteers. Again, the students had a great time and enjoyed networking and making money for a great cause.

The next few days were filled with athletic competitions. Sunday there was a 4 on 4 volleyball tournament, where the students showed no mercy and gave their all. Over 30% of the community participated and had a blast! Monday was a co-sponsored event with Disability Awareness Week that you already read about in our educational programs section. The students had a blast throwing themselves into the life size game and have requested this become a staple of the week, so we are busy planning next year’s life size game! Tuesday brought one of the biggest hits of the week, held in Albee Pool, where students competed in water games. A funny diving competition, biggest splash contest, relay races, and sink the canoe were some of the games played that evening.

Wednesday was our educational programming night. Kara Laricks, season one winner of Fashion Star, came to campus to talk to our students about creating inclusive environments. Kara is an out lesbian and is a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She spoke to the students about her story and the lessons she learned through her experiences in Greek Life, in her professional career, and being on a reality TV show. She shared tips and ideas they could take back to their chapters to help create environments where students from the LGBTQ community would feel welcome in our recruitment processes and within our community. Kara was incredibly impactful and spoke to over 80% of our fraternity and sorority community. We look forward to seeing her advice come to fruition in recruitment in the fall!

Thursday was another game night for the community where they played Wheel of Fortune. Chapters sent two representatives up per game to guess words based on Greek Life and The Hunger Games movie and book series. Fun was had by all! Friday night was the wrap up to the week. An All Greek Cookout was hosted at the Alpha Xi Delta house. A special part of the night was the educational workshop on strolling hosted by the multicultural Greek organizations. The winning chapter of Greek Week was announced that night, and our colony Delta Chi finished off the week as the big winners. What a way to finish out their first year on campus! They will definitely be a force to be reckoned with next year!

Winter Carnival Participation

Greek students enjoyed participating in all of the Winter Carnival activities hosted by Reeve Union Board. This year’s bragging rights go to Sigma Pi and Gamma Phi Beta, champions for the second year in a row of the winter celebration and competition.

Student Leadershipand Involvement

Greek Social Media Week

If you understand this generation at all, you understand that they are living in a technological world! This spring, Greek Social Media Week entailed the use of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. Students used social media to network with Greeks across the United States “sharing” photos to win contests; to find the Fraternity and Sorority Life logo on campus using clues posted on Facebook; and to tweet about their values and how they live them each day on campus. Facebook can track how many people are engaged with your Facebook page each day and throughout each week. During this week, over 6,000 people were engaged with the UWO Fraternity and Sorority Life Facebook page. We highly encourage you to join the page if you are on Facebook to keep up throughout the semester on all of the Fraternity and Sorority Life initiatives.

CampusPartnershipsThis semester, Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council co-sponsored some major campus campaigns to show support for the great work other campus organizations and departments are doing and to provide awareness that the fraternity and sorority community is an inclusive one that cares about the well-being of all students on campus. They were proud to support the 5th Annual Ally March and the 2nd Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes. They look forward to continuing these partnerships in the future.

Partnerships have been created with the Counseling Center to help students with conflict resolution in their chapters and how to transition that to the work place, the Academic Advising Center to help students plan out a path to graduation to increase the graduation rate in the fraternity and sorority members within five years, and the Career Center will be setting aside special hours to help students prepare resumes that show off the amazing experiences they are gaining in their chapters and bringing their resumes to the front of the pack. They also have a lot of social activities planned and hope to continue to build on the great unity between the chapters on campus. What a great fall schedule!

Throughout the school year Alpha Xi Delta has achieved so much in what seemed like such a short amount of time. This semester specifically, we focused on our philanthropy, Autism Speaks by spreading Autism awareness. We volunteered at the Walk Now For Autism Speaks in Milwaukee and raised over $3,575! We also hosted our annual Mr. UWO, which is similar to a men’s beauty pageant, with all proceeds going towards Autism Speaks. At the annual Greek Awards, Alpha Xi Delta was honored to win Chancellor’s Award of Excellence, Sisterhood Award, Highest GPA Award, Most Improved GPA Award, and Sorority Chapter of the Year.

Along with our many accomplishments, Alpha Xi Delta’s biggest accomplishment is maintaining the bonds of our wonderful members. Alpha Xi Delta started our year out strong, and become even stronger with the addition of 13 new members during formal recruitment. During the spring semester we were honored to accept 6 new members, who have just recently been initiated. The ladies of Alpha Xi Delta are eager to begin the 2014 fall semester as we look forward to our endless possibilities and our bright future. Specifically, the ladies are excited for formal recruitment as we expand our chapter and build new bonds of sisterhood. As hard as it is to say goodbye to our seniors, Alpha Xi Delta takes this as an opportunity to gain new sisters while maintaining an unbreakable relationship with our newly alumnae. Homecoming is another event the ladies continuously look forward to. This upcoming Homecoming we are paired with the men of Delta Chi as we compete together in the events. Alpha Xi Delta is motivated to continue to volunteer through multiple organizations such as Hands On Oshkosh, Building for Kids, Autism Speaks, and much more.

The Delta Chi Oshkosh colony had a successful semester. The colony hosted their White Carnation Formal on April 11th. This event had over 50 guests in attendance and was held at the Fin N’ Feather in Winneconne. This formal was put on to celebrate the colony’s achievements this semester. Awards were given out to multiple members as a celebration of their hard work and dedication to the colony. As well as the formal, Delta Chi was the winner of Greek Week. Being the newest colony on campus, this was a momentous achievement for Delta Chi, we are very proud to be a part of the Greek community here on campus. Delta Chi is proud to announce the initiation of the Founding Fathers of the Oshkosh Colony of the Delta Chi Fraternity, getting the colony closer to getting a charter in the near future. This is a very large accomplishment for the colony, and more initiates are to come. This class was created due to the hard work of every associate member this semester. Recruitment events were held weekly to keep the

interest of new members and keep the bond of our fraternity strong. Being their first class, Delta Chi is looking forward to many more initiations in the coming years.

Delta Chi looks forward to the new all-Greek semi-formal fall recruitment, which will work toward their continual growth as a fraternity. This growth will put them in the

right direction to receive a charter in the next year. The colony is also excited for Homecoming as they will be participating with the very lovely women of Alpha

Xi Delta. These events, combined with service and fundraising events, will make for an exciting and groundbreaking year for the Oshkosh Colony

of Delta Chi.

Something our chapter has prided ourselves on this semester, and year as a whole, is our community service efforts. Because of these efforts, our chapter has received an award through the Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Center for continuous work and passion for their organization. We will be continuing work with them in the years to come, as we are making them our official philanthropy group.

This semester we brought in five amazing gentlemen into our organization. They have exemplified everything our fraternity stands for and will no doubt be vital to our success in the future. Along with this, we are emphasizing our 365 recruitment model and still hope to give a few more bids out before the end of the term and carry those into a strong fall recruitment season.

This upcoming fall will have a lot of opportunities for the Zeta Zeta chapter of Beta Theta Pi. We will be making a strong push during recruitment, utilizing our Men of Principle Scholarship initiative. On top of this, we will be taking the whole month of October to recognize Domestic Abuse Awareness month. With this we will be putting on many types of events to make people aware of the issue. Also, keep your eyes open for a World Record breaking attempt from the men of the Zeta Zeta chapter of Beta Theta Pi this upcoming fall; you won’t want to miss it!

Gamma Alpha Omega has had three very successful events this year with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Monster Match and Match Hunt. The Monster Match was an event held in the fall semester around Halloween time for all the unmatched Littles. At this event the children and Gamma played games, ate pizza, did crafts, and had an overall great time. Gamma also recruited the help of fellow Greeks along with anyone from campus willing to spend time with these awesome children. What was even better was that a few students were actually so thrilled about Big Brothers Big Sisters after this event, they became Bigs themselves. Match Hunt was an event of the same type except this one took place during the spring semester around Easter. Gamma also participates in a service event for Big Brothers Big Sisters called the Bowl-a-Thon. Every year Gamma participates and raises $500 for this event. What was great about this year, is that Gamma was awarded the Best Collegiate Team Award from Big

Brothers Big Sisters for their efforts raising money for the Bowl-a-Thon.

This spring semester Gamma Alpha Omega had a successful line of four strong women. These women worked for eight weeks learning the national and chapter history. With so much dedication, it was

easy for Gamma to make the decision to ask these four ladies to become Gammas. We have many ideas for next fall semester on how to improve recruitment.

Fall semester of next year Gamma is looking forward to creating closer bonds with the chapters in the region. We are also trying to focus on creating better bonds

between other Greek chapters on this campus. There are so many things Gamma has planned for this fall, you’ll just have to be on the lookout for them!

We have grown much stronger as a chapter in the past few years, and this semester was no exception. Greek Life took an interest in supporting the Women’s Center’s event called “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” to help raise awareness in the community to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence. Everyone strapped on a pair of high heels and attempted to walk a mile. We had the most registered members out of all groups participating in the walk with over half our chapter! An employee at the Women’s Center, Bryan Hulbert, was so happy with our chapter’s representation at the event that he decided to get involved with Greek Life by becoming our Faculty Advisor!

We have continued to gain strength as a chapter through recruitment. In the past two semesters four of our brothers have graduated, and we have initiated 14 new brothers, with seven for each fall and spring semester. As we are initiating far more members than we are losing to graduation, we will continue to grow in size. At the Greek Awards we also received the Chapter of Excellence award showing that we are improving in all other measures of success as well.

We are eager to try out new semi-formal recruitment process developed by IFC, and hope it will help us accomplish our goal of reaching 50 active members by the end of 2014; if accomplished, this will be our largest chapter size in decades. Next year, we are also very excited for Homecoming because we will be celebrating our 30th anniversary since being re-chartered on this campus, and we will be competing in the Homecoming competitions with the lovely women of Zeta Tau Alpha. The following Homecoming we will be celebrating our 50th year on campus and we cannot be more excited!

This semester Omega Delta Phi’s new advisor, Dr. Norlisha Crawford, got Omega Delta Phi involved with the African-American studies program, by offering them the chance to co-sponsor a movie for Black History Month. Omega Delta Phi agreed to co-sponsor the event, and on February 3rd they showed the film A Time to Kill. Along with showing the movie they had a talk back with the audience. Aaron Jackson, African-American studies minor, did a great job with leading this discussion and the event turned out to be very successful. We have shown our faces around campus a lot more this semester and have gone to a lot more events. With the leadership of our new member from last semester, we were able to make ourselves seen by more people and more organizations. Our advisor also helped with our recruitment efforts, by giving us ideas on how to recruit new members, such as creating a pamphlet we could pass out while walking around campus that had general information about our fraternity. She also allowed us go to her classes and make announcements about events we had coming up.

Omega Delta Phi is looking forward to trying out the semi-formal recruitment with the rest of the fraternities in the fall. This will hopefully prove successful and help in growing the active chapter. We are looking forward to being able to follow through with a lot more of our plans, as we start to plan out all of our events this summer, with the help of our interim advisor, Dr. Sylvia Carey-Butler, who is willing to have a planning meeting with us to try and set up everything for next year.

Gamma Phi Beta is proud to announce an extremely successful year! Their chapter has worked really hard to thrive as an organization over the past year and in return has achieved an incredible amount. The chapter grew significantly exceeding chapter total of 53 members! At the Greek Awards Ceremony, Gamma Phi Beta was awarded Most Improved Chapter of the Year, Chapter of Excellence, Excellence in Community Service, and chapter advisor Emily Propson took home the award for Advisor of the Year! Gamma Phi Beta also volunteered at and sponsored the Girls on the Run “Crazy Hair Station” before the Girls on the Run Northeast Wisconsin 5K race in November 2013. Three of Gamma Phi Beta’s members participated as Running Buddies for elementary aged girls and helped promote a positive and healthy lifestyle for the young girls. On the day of the race, members came ready to boost each participant’s self-esteem by doing their hair and giving them a homemade headband or hair clip! To top off a great year, the women of Gamma Phi Beta took 1st place during Winter Carnival for the third year in a row! Gamma Phi Beta is currently at campus total of 53 members. We have held “Bring a Friend” sisterhoods to keep in touch with others in the campus community, but will not be formally recruiting until next semester. The women of Gamma Phi Beta are proud of this accomplishment andlook forward to adding to their chapter in the fall!

The women of Gamma Phi Beta couldn’t be more excited for formal recruitment in September! They have already held a chapter recruitment school to boost morale and excitement for recruitment in the fall! They will also be holding anotherrecruitment school this summer to prepare for an expansion of theiramazing sisterhood!

The Gamma-Mu chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity, International, has had a fantastic spring semester! Once again Sigma Pi reigned supreme in Winter Carnival with the beautiful women of Gamma Phi Beta (Am I sensing a three-peat next year? Not that anyone is counting—but it has been two in a row!), and the Gamma-Mu chapter is incredibly proud of that. Sigma Pi also received the honorable award of Fraternity Chapter of the Year for the 2013 calendar year. This is an award that is given out once a year to the overall best fraternity and one that will be cherished by the chapter for quite some time.

This semester the Gamma-Mu chapter welcomed four new members during the spring and simply cannot wait to get them involved with the everyday life of a Sigma Pi man, turning them into outstanding citizens both within the Greek community and the overarching community as a whole. Each man is an instant addition to the already healthy culture of academia and brotherhood that has been established, and each one has a voracious and eager appetite for excelling and learning! Already their impact has been felt within the chapter.

Looking forward to next semester, the Gamma-Mu chapter is absolutely thrilled to be participating in the new All-Greek semi-formal recruitment process. The chapter is looking forward to the Taste of Oshkosh and Rec Fest (the staples of any good recruitment process) and also to strengthening our chapter with some more brilliant young men. As per usual, this Chapter is eagerly anticipating Homecoming and is hoping to continue its healthy culture of prospering. During the summer is Sigma Pi International’s Convocation in Orlando, FL, and three lucky brothers are excited to attend and bring back some eye-opening ideas to further better the Gamma-Mu chapter.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated has had a successful year of recruitment, working to rebuild our strength and presence at UW Oshkosh. The chapter hosted a dance in fall 2013, bringing the campus community, NPHC Greeks from other campuses, and Phi Beta Sigma collegiate and alumni members together. In the spring 2014 semester, we focused on growth of our organization and preparing our spring line.

This spring, we added two new members to the Pi Upsilon Chapter, including a legacy member. There was a fantastic turnout of alumni, UW Oshkosh community members, and members of our fellow NPHC organizations for the event. We are proud to be able to bring NPHC diversity to this Greek community and we plan to have a probate every semester with new members to display to the campus. Now three members strong, we look forward to a solid start to fall 2014. We are an inclusive fraternity that wants to grow on the campus. We will continue to build a strong chapter at UW Oshkosh and appreciate the support of our alumni. Your presence and backing on campus and at our events is meaningful to the collegiate membership personally and as an organization as we continue to grow. Pi Upsilon Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated will display brotherhood, scholarship, and service throughout the fall 2014 semester. We plan to host educational events for the campus community about our fraternity to grow awareness of our amazing organization. We are looking forward to meeting men who are interested in the ideals and values of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated and increase our numbers; all while having fun events with different fraternities and sororities to foster unity.

This past school year, the ladies of Zeta Tau Alpha accomplished so much! ZTA held their second annual Zeta Tau Alpha Crown Classic at Utica Golf Course in Oshkosh, WI. The event raised over $3,000 for their philanthropy, breast cancer education and awareness. There were multiple ways to donate throughout the event, including a raffle table, mulligans, closest to the hole, registration fee, hole sponsors, etc. The weather was beautiful and allowed for a full day of fun and fundraising! Zeta Tau Alpha raised over $5,000 in total this year for their philanthropy. At the annual Greek Awards Ceremony, ZTA received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence, Traci Wiess (2013 President) won Greek Woman of the Year, and Alexandria Heimmermann won the award for Emerging Greek Woman of the Year. Addition to campus recognition, ZTA was proud to win the Oustanding Chapter Sisterhood Award at Zeta Day, held in Illinois on April 6th.

Zeta Tau Alpha recruited 15 women during formal recruitment in the fall semester and 16 women during the spring semester. We ended the year with a total of 53 amazing women. Throughout the

spring semester, ZTA had multiple sisterhoods and crown parties, such as a Pinterest potluck, so that we could meet potential new members and create a stronger sisterhood. The bond of ZTA

sisterhood has continued to grow throughout the chapter this year.

Zeta Tau Alpha is excited to go through formal recruitment and expand their chapter even more next semester with new members. We are also excited to host their

third annual Zeta Tau Alpha Crown Classic Golf Outing and their third annual Pink the Rink Hockey game with the UW Oshkosh Hockey team. Lastly,

ZTA can’t wait to hand out pink breast cancer ribbons at a Packers game in October!

The Epsilon Kappa chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma has grown quite a bit within the past 2013-2014 school year. With campus sorority total increasing, this past school year Sigma gave additional bids out to six wonderful women. Ryanne Mallow, the chapter’s Membership Recruitment Director, has gone above and beyond to encourage informal sisterhoods and other fun informal recruitment events. By having these recruitment events, the women are not only making amazing memories with new ladies but are also getting a chance to tell others about what Tri Sigma stands for. The chapter is focusing on the potential of a new member, looking for women who will continue to help leave a wonderful legacy for their sisterhood.

Tri Sigma’s sisterhood is constantly moving ever forward and this year was no different. This past April, the chapter hosted the first annual Wisconsin State Day which brought women from Sigma Sigma Sigma chapters from Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois together to be inspired. State Day focused on three areas: Sigma, service and self. During the service portion Sigma’s helped out to make tie-blankets for woman of the Whitewater Tri Sigma chapter, whose house had a fire this semester. Later that evening, the women participated in Relay for Life at UWO continuing their commitment to service. Alongside those two volunteer opportunities Epsilon Kappa raised $3,695 dollars collectively!

Epsilon Kappa is very excited for formal recruitment; they have already met many women who are interested in participating! Next semester, the women of Tri Sigma are look forward to meeting their new sisters and helping them start their new journey!

Make sure that any of your brothers and sisters who don’t receive the magazine update their information with the Alumni

Office so they can receive updates from the Greek community! They need to know to put Greek Life and their

Chapter (written out completely), in the section where they ask what organizations you

were involved with, and correct email in order to receive this magazine.
