When we decided to start this magazine, people said we were crazy. "Magazines are dead," everyone said, and we agree. The old standard of magazine publish-ing is dead because today's woman is smart, savvy and can read between the lines. They know when the advice given is masked as editorial content but really comes from a key advertiser. They know when a story has been recycled and re-gurgitated 50 times in 50 different ways. Newsstands are filled with magazines that are designed to line the pockets of the suits and investors, who are mostly men.

When online media companies and blogs began to pop up women flocked to this "new media" with fervor and excitement and let's face it, we all get a good bit of news, fashion tips and other lifestyle ma-terial from online resources. However, in the last few years volume of online media content has become completely over-whelming and we felt it was time to get back to basics in a totally modern, fresh and future seeking way. So, we created Ni-cole Magazine to give women something to read cover-to-cover with real, engaging fresh content. Think of us as the curators

of the huge wealth of information out there. We promise to give you something you have yet to discover in each issue. We promise never to sell out to adver-tisers. We promise to always care about what's new fresh, affordable, but also what's worth the "splurge." Most of all, we promise to create a magazine you actually want to read cover to cover...and the best part is we distribute the magazine in Blo Blow-dry bars, salons, spas and boutiques where you actually have the time to read it cover to cover! Enjoy the journey!

- What made you decide to join the cast of RHOBH?They approached me when I was in the middle of filming Siberia and I thought that perhaps a reality show wasn’t the best thing for me at the moment. I did watch the show before joining the cast and I knew it was a great platform. All these women have used the platform that the show gave them for their different endeavors. I wanted to promote my charity based pageant Queen of the Universe. (QUEENUNIVERSEPAGEANT.COM)

- Did you have any reservations on how joining the cast might affect your position as a busi-ness and career woman? Yes. I was slightly scared. Specifically at the begin-ning when I saw that edit-ing is a huge factor but I always remained true to myself and I think at the end of the day regardless of the editing the audience can see the real you.

- You are so beautiful -- Do you find your beauty makes it hard for people to take your seri-ously?I think some people judge the book by its cover and sometimes we underestimate or overestimate each other. I do think that because I was a beauty queen some people tend to think I will be a wallflower that has nothing to say, but I love proving them wrong. - What are your current business ventures?I am still doing my charity pageant, Queen of the Universe, which is an empowering platform for young women to represent their countries regardless of their circumstances in life (they can be married, single, divorced, have chil-dren or any sexual orientation they want). I believe women come in all shapes and forms and we can’t judge them based on that. The one important thing for me is that they must all have a charity based platform. My husband and I are in preproduction of 3 movies, a Latin show and a children’s anima-tion. I love production! It’s such a creative outlet. It’s like having a baby and watching it grow. I’m doing a very unique nail polish line, and finally I’m developing a hair care line because people always ask me about my hair care system. I do a mask once a week that my grandma taught me how to make so I want to share it with everyone.

- How do you overcome the day-to-day chal-lenges in the business world?I don’t even think about it. I feel so blessed so I just thank God every day and I take each day

at a time.

- How do you find time to take care of yourself?Believe it or not I am very low maintenance. My husband says I look like a million bucks all the time so that’s what matters :) I never go to the hair salon (only to cut it every 2 to 3 months) and I rarely do manicures. For me the way to relax and pamper myself is tak-

ing a bath and reading a magazine. I also love to just hang with my

family. I work very hard in the week and the weekends

are for our family.

- How to you make sure you squeeze a work out in with your hectic schedule?Don’t hate me for saying this but the reality is I don’t work out. I am very blessed to have a fast metabolism and running after

my babies really helps. What I do love

to do is hike with my husband. It’s not a hard

hike, it’s more of a walk but I love it because it gives us

alone time to talk about our days.

- Tell us about your pageant? My pageant is something very dear to my heart. Like I said before; It’s a charity based pageant. I love being able to mentor my girls and to inspire these beautiful young women to do all their charities. It’s hard for me because by the time of the final night of the pageant I fall in love with all of them so I want to crown all of them. There can only be one winner but to me they are all my queens. I have an amazing team. My husband sup-ports me entirely. The first year was a very uphill battle but he was behind me the entire way. Nick Gonzalez and Nakia Dickens are my choreographers and they are simply great! I had lots of friends and sponsors who united to help me in my dream and thanks to the efforts of the pageant and everyone involved in it... this year I will open my first kindergarten with the UNESCO Foundation For Children In Need. My mother-in-law has opened almost 500 schools throughout the world and she inspired me to want to make a difference. Its unfath-omable to me that there are places in the world where education is simply not an option. I know here in America we complain about our education system but there are places where education is two people under a tree trying to figure out what a book says. That to me is

“I’ve Always

Been A Very Honest

Person...”

Page 15: SPRING 2014: CAREER EDITION

NOT RIGHT! How do we expect the children to make a better future if we don’t give them the tools they need? That’s why I want to spread the word and do whatever is at my reach to try to make a dif-ference. I know I’m just one person and what I do might be very little, but if we all did a little it would become a lot because everything counts.

- What has been the most surprising challenge in running a pageant? The most surprising thing is when some people who have a lot of money say they can’t help.

- You don’t have to name names, but have any of the housewives surprised you by being dirtier off-camera than they are on camera?I can totally name names as I’ve always been a very honest person. And the answer is Yes. Some of them like Bran-di are very dirty on and off camera but oth-ers like Carlton and Yolanda hide behind their blogs. They are nice to your face and then talk crap about you in their blogs or social media. To me that is simply disgusting. If you have something bad to say about me don’t be nice to my face just tell me what you think.

- Are there any apps or electronics you can’t live without for your business? My phone is the one thing I find myself incred-ibly attached to. I even joke with my husband because I am constantly loosing it and freaking out about it :) I also love “The Twitter” as I call it. I’m not a very techie kind of girl but I do love being able to connect with the fans on twitter and I love putting pics on Instagram because its like my own album that will never get lost.

Find me on both: On Twitter: @joycegiraud and on Instagram: joyce_giraud

- Do you have any female business role mod-els?In my charity aspect for sure my mother-in-law. She has dedicated her entire life to charity and to help the less fortunate. In business there are many women I admire. In life my biggest role model is my mother who always taught me to dream big.

- Where do you turn when you need business or career advice? For sure my husband. I always turn to him for any advice. He is my love and my best friend so I know he always wants the best for me and I really have tremendous admiration for him.

- What do you do when you have those days when you just feel like you want to crawl in a hole and give up?After I became a mommy there isn’t much time to indulge in days of crawling up into a hole. LOL Plus my babies always put a smile on face, but if I ever do have one of those crazy days, I take a long bath and I cry. Then I make a prayer, I call my mom and ask her to pray with me, and if I still feel like I want to crawl in a hole, I tell my husband and he usually gets me out of the funk. It usually happens to me when I am pms’ing. He is very loving and patient with me.

Imagine that a guy and a girl are at a party, and one ap-proaches the other and strikes up a conversation. Chances are that when you envisioned this scenario, you assumed it was the guy who approached the girl. That’s because we have what psychologists call behavioral scripts, or a se-quence of events that we typically expect to occur in so-cial situations. In most cultures, expectations or norms about male and female dating behaviors (e.g., guy approaches girl) are so entrenched that there are special days or dances where the script is flipped. On Sadie Hawkins Day (traditional-ly observed in early November) or at a Sadie Hawkins Dance, women have the opportunity to break social conventions by asking men out on a date or to a dance. To study dating be-haviors like this, researchers have used the somewhat unique experience of speed dating. First, a bit about speed-dating. Speed-dating is a structured way for daters to meet a lot of people quickly. The typical speed-dating event features women sitting at various loca-tions around a room, often a coffee shop or bar, while men circulate and chat with each female for a few minutes. A signal will then indicate that time is up and the men should move along to the next woman. The process repeats until ev-eryone at the event has “dated” each other. Afterward, the male and female participants let the event organizer know which partners they would like to see again. If the male and female indicate mutual interest, the organizer gives them each other’s contact information and the would-be couple takes it from there. If done efficiently, a speed dater could meet over a dozen potential dating partners in less than an hour. As you can see, the typical speed-dating event relies heav-ily on the “male approaches female” norm. Consistent with norm expectations, speed-dating research reveals that, women are pickier than men when indicating interest in po-tential partners,1 with men indicating interest in roughly half of partners and women indicating interest in roughly a third.2 However, other researchers wondered if this apparent gen-der difference was actually a gender difference, or if instead it was the result of the social situation.3 Specifically they were

interested if the results were a by-product of women sitting in one place, while men circulated around the

room. To test this, the researchers had over 300 undergrad-uates participate in speed-dating events. In half of those events, participants engaged in the standard speed-dating procedure of men circulating while women stayed in one place. For the other events, men and women performed a Sadie Hawkins-like role reversal: men stayed in one place while women circulated around the room. In the standard “men rotating” events, the researchers replicated previous findings (not to mention prevailing ste-reotypes) that women were pickier about who they liked relative to men. Importantly, in the non-standard “women rotating” events where men and women reversed roles, the researcher found the exact opposite pattern: men were picky whereas women were less selective. Said another way, there was a “Sadie Hawkins Effect,” such that when women were forced to go from man to man during the speed-dating event, those women acted like stereotypical men by stating that they had interest in more of the potential partners. These findings show how a widely assumed sex differ-ence—women are picky about who they date, men aren’t—could largely be an artifact of social situations. Men may be less picky not because they are men, but because societal norms require them to do the majority of the approaching in dating scenarios and that women’s selectivity derives from their ability to wait for potential suitors to come to them. In other words, when you have the experience of lots of poten-tial suitors approaching you, it’s a lot easier to be picky. This brings up a much broader point: It is all too easy to as-sume that men and women are widely different because of inborn differences. However, we must be careful to not make these assumptions without first looking at other potential ex-planations.

Who Doesn’t Love Paris in the Springtime?Ah, the City of Lights. Nothing is more invigorating than visit-

ing the capital of chic and spring is the perfect time to plan a Parisian escape. Exploring the hidden treasures of Paris re-

ally make the city come alive. Many first time visitors to Paris are left disappointed, particularly in light of the most recent economic downturn, which has spurred a bevy of corporate

take-overs of Parisian bistros, and cafes, leaving unbeknownst tourists and diners scratching their heads and wondering where the good cuisine is hiding. Not to worry dear readers, I’ve been

traveling to grand ol’ Paris for years and have a well curated list of shopping, eating, sleeping recommendations for the perfect

jaunt to the land of joie de vivre.

Where to Eat:Alcazar- 62 Rue Mazarine 75006 Paris, France. Metro Stop: Odean. One of the more affordable Michelin star restaurants in Paris with delicious food and a chic ambiance. Service is efficient and friendly and they do have English menus if you request them.Mariage Freres- 30 rue du Bourg-Tibourg, Paris 75004. Metro Stop: Hotel De Ville. For the ulti-mate in old world Parisian charm, take tea in this legendary tea salon with absolutely wonderful teas and desserts. They have a strawberry creme brûlée that made me fall in love with Paris all over again. There are multiple locations throughout Paris, but my favorite is the one in the Marais.La Jacobine. 59-61 Rue Saint Andre des Arts, 75006 Paris. Metro: Saint-Michel/Odéon, Saint-Germain-Des-Prés. This Tea House is tucked away down a cobble stone street just off of Rue Saint

Andre des Arts. It is open sev-en days a week from 11:30 to 23:30. They serve up delicious traditional French faire and homemade desserts baked fresh daily.Mon Thai- 84 Rue Mon-torgueil, Paris 75002. Metro Stop: Artes de Metiers. When you need a break from French cuisine, Mon Thai is waiting with fresh, tasty and budget friendly food.

Where to Stay:Mini Splurge

Hotel Chavanel. 22 Rue Tronchet, 75008 Paris, France.

Metro. Champs-Élysées. Perfectly located in one of Paris’s best neighborhood with lots of metro connec-tions, this modern boutique hotel is chic and efficient. Starting at $285 per night.

Steal:Hotel Massena. 16, rue

Tronchet, 75008 Paris, France. Metro. Champs-Élysées. This clean, bright and modern hotel has small, but bright

and cheery rooms that wont break the bank in a great

central location.Starting at just under $200 per

night.

What to Do:Shop the mother of all consignment shops at Reciproque-

Rue de La Pompe, 75016 Paris Metro: Victor Hugo. This is the self proclaimed largest consignment shop in Paris. The store

literally consists of multiple boutiques covering an entire city block of separate mini shops. One shop is filled to the brim with hand bags, another with

clothes and there is an entire basement of coats. Be prepared to spend an entire day here and half of your life savings.

Shop the flea markets at St. Ouen. A vintage shoppers paradise with great jewelry, clothing , book and poster stalls. Most of the stalls don’t start opening until 10 am, so catch a few more zzz’s and eat breakfast in the city before heading out to St. Ouen.

St. Ouen is in a bit of a sketchy neighborhood in Paris, so wear a money belt if you have one and withdraw cash from an ATM in Paris proper before you leave. The main action begins past the open air stalls on Rue de Rossiers (you will end up there if you keep going straight past the junky merchandise on your left). Make sure you have a return metro ticket before you leave because the metro station can be a bit scary with young French thugs presumably running some type of metro ticket scam. For a

more complete breakdown of the best stalls visit my blog at Shortcutstofabulous.com and type St. Ouen in the search box.

Take a food tour. There are a lot to choose from, but my favorites are Paris by Mouth (book early) tours. They have tours to suit every taste, but the taste of Saint Germain

gives you insider access to the best bakeries, chocolate and pastry and cheese shops in Paris. http://parisbymouth.com/upcoming-food-tours/

Our Pick…Rent an Apartment:I love renting an apartment while in Paris. What you lost in concierge and bellhop

services you gain in comfort, space and really feeling like a Parisian resident during your stay. There are plenty of apartment rental sites, but I have used Holidays France

Rentals with great success. http://holidays-france-rentals.com

The

QueensOf Start Ups

Let’s face it, kicking butt in the business world is hard work, but founding a start-up takes things to a whole new level. We found a few fab female start-up founders and asked them about their

journey and how they make it happen everyday.

Page 22: SPRING 2014: CAREER EDITION

Theary Sim is a sought after high fashion designer based in Los Angeles, CA. Her journey began as a plus model with FORD Models. Her love for fashion was ampli-fied and honed as a celebrity wardrobe stylist. Theary is making her mark in fash-

ion. www.youthearykhmer.com

When did you start your company? The plus size line started June 1st, 2012,

but I actually started doing standard size clothes in college. That’s when I actually

started designing.

What gave you the guts? A lot of people in the industry would ask me “hey aren’t you in school for design? Why don’t you make plus size clothes?”

-- I never really thought about it, because that’s not what they teach you in school.

After everyone was telling me that I should branch into plus size and that it

was a good market, I did some research. When I decided to enter into plus size

[women’s wear] it was because it became clear that there really was a need for - it

really wasn’t something I was really plan-ning on doing, it kind of just happened! It went in that direction because of the field

I was already in, I am a plus size model turned plus size designer.

What is the hardest thing about run-

ning a startup? OK the biggest reason why designers/

brands don’t branch into plus size is because the woman’s body (especially

size 12 and up) are all very different. For instance, a size 14 can come in various

versions of a size 14. It’s very difficult as a retailer to try and make something fit those

3 different types of 14s properly, it’s just not going to happen. It’s a lot more work for people, it’s not your standard cookie

cutter sizes and cuts. When I did branch into the plus size industry I needed to

make sure that I understood the woman’s body types.

What keeps you going on a bad day? When I first started a lot of people told me

I had to get tough skin and stop being so sensitive, there’s a lot of politics and cri-

tiques in this industry. Once I realized that everyone is not my customer and you will never make everyone happy it did make it

easier. At the end of the day I love what I do and I think people can see my passion

through my work. Anytime time things get rough and I want to quit, I push through knowing that I was put in this world to

effect change and if I can touch 1 person or many it’s all worth it, those triumph are

what make the struggles worth it.

How do you find time for yourself? I am a independent designer and so it is really hard, because I am pretty much a

one woman show a lot of the time. When I do have time to myself, I want it to have

NOTHING to do with business, I go to the beach, movies, hang out with friends, I try

to be very free spirited when it comes to my personal life, because I do have to be so structured in business. That being said in this industry when people want some-

thing they want it now, so in the midst of my “me time” sometimes I do need to

walk away & put back on my business hat to fill orders, or get pulls together for a last

minute celebrity shoot or show, it com-pletely changes your schedule. So trust

me it’s hard for me to carve out me time, but I make it happen when I can. I know

it’s important in this stage of my career to take advantage of opportunities, but it’s

ultimately up to me which opportunities I decide to take or leave.

Do you keep your diet and exercise in check with your busy schedule? If so, do you have any tips? Being in the plus size

industry, of course I am very pro PLUS, but at the same time, I try to live a very

healthy and active lifestyle in general. To be able to accommodate my crazy work schedule I prep my meals every 3 days, and pack it up for throughout the week, it’s not fun, but it’s the only way for me

to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This helps so that there isn’t a need to just say “oh

I’m tired, it’s been a really long day...Why don’t I just go to McDonalds?”

Do you have any tips for finding inves-tors?

I didn’t necessarily go out and find inves-tors; word of mouth and referrals were a great source for me getting in touch with

potential investors. I had to weed through different investors and business opportuni-

ties to see if they were the right fit for me and my brand, because money isn’t every-thing -- although it may seem like it when

you’re working for yourself.

What would you say to other women who have a big idea and are thinking

about starting a business? When it comes to starting a business what

I’ve realized is it’s not always about the product. It’s really all about having a fol-lowing and a demand for what you have

to offer and being able to do the research to see what is it that you have that isn’t

already out there, if it is something that is already out there, what is it that you are

bringing different to the table? There are a lot of products out in the marketplace and

it’s subjective many times as to which is better. It really comes down to the people

who support and speak well on your product. Stay true to what you do, but also recognize that there does need to be a need

for your product or service in order for it to be something that can be profitable.

What is the secret ingredient to getting ahead in your career? I think I’m very

relatable (especially to my target audi-ence). I made my life like a open book, I

talked about my life as well as fashion - I think because I was able to connect with

people on a personal level they were more willing to support me having a clothing line, because I wasn’t trying to sell any-thing to anybody. I know where you are

coming from and I know what you are going through, because at the end of the day I am my own client, I’ve dealt with

the same issues of going shopping and not feeling like there were enough plus size options, because of that I was given an

edge. I want people to feel like I’ve spe-cifically made these clothes for them.

Amber Wagner is super mother of six children who runs a thriving wine business with her husband and launched the ultra luxe, ultra chic swim line last year, Mia Marcelle.

www.miamarcelle.com .

When did you start your company? We began designing and crafting swim-

wear in 2011 and established Mia Marcelle in 2013.

What gave you the “guts?”After having 6 kids and abandoning my

career as a psychologist, I looked at what made me happy...that happiness was being

myself and feeling luxurious in my own skin. The pride I have from raising my

kids and marks to prove it that make me feel good about who I am. Venturing into

swimwear was a way that I could share that pride of self, and hopefully help other women cherish their own unique qualities and flaunt them as a symbol of happiness. Having the “guts” to do this was a culmi-nation of having the guts to leave another career, create and raise a family, and still

love who I am and who I was.

What is the hardest thing about running a start-up?

Trusting in yourself to know the way and go the way. There are so many brands and

so many ways to make it in this business, you just need to stick to your guns and

go for what drives you. I just hope that what drives me also appeals to others. At times, I have to put blinders on and buck the trends to achieve what I believe will

transcend the years generalities of fashion and make a real statement while maintain-

ing our core values. Knowing the global view, while keeping an unadulterated local

feel can be a challenge.

What keeps you going on a bad day? What a loaded question! hahaha! Hon-

estly, a good rum and coke! My kids and husband are so special to me and they are

the driving force behind my ambition with Mia Marcelle. It’s easy to think of them

and bring a smile to my face. On the flip side, there are days that I need to take a

break...in comes rum and coke! When my

husband is home late, the kids are in bad moods, etc., all I can do is think of one of

my children working with me in fashion in 10 or 15 years. Nothing would make me

happier than that.

How do you find time for yourself? We are lucky enough to have a pool in the backyard. The kids love it and it becomes the afternoon haven. When they are play-

ing (and being safe) I find some time to enjoy the peace of Napa Valley. Occasion-

ally, my husband and I will get away for a night to a local hotel/spa, like Solage in

Calistoga. We play Napa Valley tourist for a day...it is amazing and we realize the reason why people come here! It truly is

a wonderful place that envelops you in pleasure.

Do you keep your diet and exercise in check with your crazy schedule? If so,

do you have any tips?Above all...I drink lots of water. Solid hydration may be the closest thing we

have to the fountain of youth and aim to take full advantage of it! Diet wise: I try my hardest to eat healthy and clean. The old adage of “can’t read it; don’t eat it” is what I follow. I like seeing AND tasting each ingredient in a dish. Beyond that, I don’t worry much about the oil, salt, etc. It should still taste good. When it comes to exercise, all I get right now is running

around with my kids. I hope to use the gym in the future.

Do yo have any tips for finding inves-tors?

Don’t ever take on investors. Take it slow and steady and think small. If you create a quality product that resonates with people and brings value to them, you hit it on the

head. Grow slow and smart...you only want to answer to yourself.

What would you say to other women who have a big idea and are thinking of

starting a business?Start it! Focus on the details and stay

small at first. Get the kinks out, costs un-der control, then begin to grow. From that solid foundation, you will know the route to success. And most importantly, if you

believe in what you are doing, give it more than a year or two. Many will say stop, no

and bad idea...believe in yourself.

What do you think is the secret ingredi-ent to getting ahead in your career?

Go with your gut! Always follow it and disregard what naysayers state. If you

listen to anyone other than yourself, you will only dilute the brand and make a mess

for yourself. You need to believe in what you are creating and know that risk brings reward. Invest zero dollars into yourself,

risk your personal preferences, and see what happens...I think it will reward you

with a grand following.

Nancy Twine is the founder of a line of haircare products (Briogeo) revolutionizing natural hair care world with its bold packaging and glowing customer reviews.

www.briogeohair.com .

When did you start your company? Briogeo launched in September 2013

and has been full steam ahead ever since!

The major focus right now is getting the word out about the brand and ex-

panding our retail presence.

What gave you the “guts?”I spent several years working to get Briogeo off the ground. I think the

longer you spend cultivating your brand and plan — the more comfort-able you feel about taking the plunge to devote yourself to it 100%. Once

you start to see your dream coming to life, that’s what really motivates you to

take a full leap of faith.

What is the hardest thing about run-ning a start-up?

Unless you have significant fund-ing, most start-up founders aren’t in a

financial position to hire employees, so founders themselves end up wear-

ing many hats and working around the clock to keep the business functioning on all levels. The hardest thing is try-ing to manage all of the moving parts

without support of a full time team.

What keeps you going on a bad day?As an entrepreneur, you come to real-

ize that the journey can be a roller-coaster — there are many great days, but there are also many disappointing

ones also. The thing that keeps me going is knowing that the bad news is

normally not too distant from some re-ally good news also.

How do you find time for yourself? You have to schedule time for yourself

like you do your work priorities. I generally try to take small breaks on

the weekends to unwind some and spend time with friends.

Do you keep your diet and exercise in check with your crazy schedule?

If so, do you have any tips?To be honest — it can really be hard to keep a steady fitness routine when there’s so much to do at all hours of

the day. I think the key to staying regimented with fitness is to start the day earlier than most so that you can

focus on personal goals before the rest of the world wakes up. That way you won’t get distracted with phone calls

or e-mails because things are pretty quiet at 6am!

Do you have any tips for finding investors?

Finding the right investor can be really difficult and so can sourcing money early on. I think a great strategy for

start ups is to raise money from friends and family early on and it’s much

easier to do these days with resources like Kickstarter, etc.

What would you say to other women who have a big idea and are thinking

of starting a business?Don’t rush into an idea. Take baby steps and focus on being thoughtful

from every angle of your idea. Also, presentation can make or break a good

idea. Make sure whatever it is your setting out to do, you put thought into

the design, communication and pre-sentation element of your concept — it

will save you money in the long run and will make new opportunities hap-

pen more quickly.

What do you think is the secret ingredient to getting ahead in your

career?Cultivating a strong network within

your industry is key. If you create a strong reputation and personal brand

— people within your industry are more apt to mentor you and help you

achieve your goals.

Laura Kozelouzek founded a workspace company (Quest Workspaces) that is “co-working” for grown-ups. The company has grown from one center to a multi-state, multi-center company with workspaces in South Florida and New York City, in-cluding two in Miami’s hottest new area, “Brickell.”

www.questworkspaces.com .

When did you start your company? June 2010

What gave you the “guts?”I have to thank my parents for that, I was born with guts and developed

an insatiable appetite for beating the odds. I have always been the person

to step up to a challenge and ask those difficult questions. I am not afraid of

failing because I know every stum-bling block is a stepping-stone. I have

a far greater fear of not taking a chance and having regrets.

What is the hardest thing about run-ning a start-up?

I LOVE being my own boss and in control of my professional destiny. I

am also very passionate and strive for the best, so no matter how hard I work;

there is always more to do. The trick is turning your race into a journey and realizing that the never-ending pursuit

to improve, learn and grown is more important than crossing the finish line.

What keeps you going on a bad day? Understanding that it is just that, a

“bad day” that does not have to turn into a bad week, a bad month or bad

year. Tomorrow is a new day. If things are not going right, and I become

negative instead of changing the per-spective and dealing with it, then you

create a snowball effect of “bad days”. I also know that for every bad day,

there were at least 10 good ones.

How do you find time for yourself? Besides owning a company, I am a

single mom to an 11-year-old. I man-age many competing priorities, but

I make it a point to spend time with my family and friends, doing things I enjoy. I spend most weekends out of the city, at our lake house, outdoors,

enjoying the simple things.

Do you keep your diet and exercise in check with your crazy schedule?

If so, do you have any tips?I wish I could say that I am consis-

tent about my workouts, but I am not. When opening new locations, I tend to

get 120 percent involved, frequently traveling and taking many meetings,

which leaves little time for a strict diet or workout regimen. I try to balance

that by being active on the weekends with my son. While my daily works

out ebb and flow, most weekends I am water or snow skiing, kicking around a

soccer ball, biking or rollerblading.

Do you have any tips for finding investors?

I decided to grow my company organi-cally and not have investors, yet we have so many clients and associates

that would love to invest. If you have a well-run company, strong brand, that people can identify with, and you and

your team approach every day with en-ergy and enthusiasm, others will want

a piece of it. What would you say to other women

who have a big idea and are think-

ing of starting a business?Do it, but be smart and strategic

about it. Test it, know yourself, your strengths and weaknesses and know that starting small is better than not

starting at all.

What do you think is the secret ingredient to getting ahead in your

career?Passion and integrity

To get bikini ready you need to battle the belly bulge and get the booty right & tight.

For The Belly: EAT RIGHT. You can do a thousand sit-ups a day, but if you are

not eating right you won’t see results. Stay away from white bread, white rice and starchy foods. When I need to get bikini ready I try to prep my meals. It takes a little time, but once it’s complete you have

healthy meals and snacks ready to go to keep you on track. Here is a quick look at some of my go-to snacks and meals:

• For breakfast, steel cut oatmeal with water or almond milk and black coffee

• For snacks, I prep small containers of strawberries and blackberries• For lunch, salmon or whitefish with brown rice and asparagus. I will also use

the salmon that I cooked and put it over a salad for lunch • For dinner, chicken and broccoli

• For drinks, water, water, water. Water cleanses the body from head to toe. It flushes out your system and keeps things moving. I’ll also drink green tea

throughout the day.

For The Burn:Do cardio at least 3 times a week. You can’t see abs if there is a layer of fat

over them. You need to burn that belly fat with cardio and clean eating.

For The Booty:Squat what your mama gave ya! Seriously, squats and lunges does wonders for the booty. Try to do these everyday, especially leading

up to your beach body debut.
