IN SUPPORT OF BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY VOL. IX NO. 2 SPRING 2015

With the start of a New Year, it becomes a time to look forward to our

future with a renewed purpose. This has been an interesting year and

our board members join me in thanking you, our members for your

loyalty. We have enjoyed a year of learning and friendship and we look

forward to more of the same.

As my fingers roamed on my computer I came across a most interesting

thought and I would like to pass it on to you.

The 3 C’s of Life: Choices, Chances and Changes:

You must make a Choice to take a Chance or your life will never Change.

My life changed dramatically when I made the choice to help create a

BNC Chapter at Westlake. Our dedicated committee members bring us

diversified choices all through the year to keep learning alive. Fund

Raising is alive and well and gives us the chance to raise money to

continue the ongoing research at the University.

Our Social Justice and Community Outreach Committees are always

reaching out and we have many opportunities available for our

members to choose the way they can be of service.

Paying it forward is a large part of what we do. Try it and it will change

your life.

Look through this bulletin and make plans for the future.

Learn with us, laugh with us, and partake of the myriad choices we offer.

POSITIONS AVAILABLE!

No Experience Necessary!

On Job Training!

The Executive Board has two positions that need to be filled as soon as possible. The positions are Corresponding Secretary and Recording Secretary. No experience is necessary, we will train and help you. While the pay is non- existent the benefits of working with a wonderful group of women are priceless. If you are interested in or would like to nominate someone for one of these positions, please contact Nadine Krystall 833-8253.

It is with regret that Zelda and the

Executive Board accepted the resignations

of Violet Vietoris from her position of

Recording Secretary and of Lynne

Schneiderman from her position of

Corresponding Secretary. Both women did

an excellent job but personal commitments

prompted their decisions. We are happy to

report that Violet will continue on with

Community Outreach and Lynne will still

collect donations for Sustaining the Mind

and Tribute Cards.

Yes, we still are collecting

Box Tops for Education.

Please save the Box Tops For Education coupons found on cereal, soup cans, etc. and bring them to the blue collection box in the coat room of the clubhouse. The box is on the shelf above the food pantry collection bin.

Meet Our Members!

Ruth Melon, one of our new members and a resident

here at Westlake for the past year and a half, has come to us from northwest New Jersey. Having three sisters living fairly close by, a shore home in Belmar and a daughter in Howell, Ruth and her husband were enticed to move to Westlake, where they find everyone welcoming. The Melons now enjoy babysitting for their granddaughter several times a week. Ruth became interested in Brandeis because of the variety of activities offered such as arts and crafts, trips, academic and entertaining study groups, and “best of all,” in her opinion, “they are all available in one organization!” Also, the Community Outreach programs and neurodegenerative disease research being done at Brandeis are very important to her. Ruth has a deep love of history and pursued research on her own about the White Rose in Germany during World War II. As a result of her findings, Ruth wrote and published a book in 2007, Journey to the White Rose in Germany. This fascinating story will be presented by Ruth in a study group here at the clubhouse in May. Register for this interesting study group and get to meet Ruth and learn more about her!

Delores Decker and her husband Bob have been

Westlake residents for a year and a half. Before coming to Westlake they settled in Middletown, NJ after several moves across the country. They have two daughters, one of whom is married with three children and resides in Illinois. Delores experienced the outreach of friendship early in her residency here when walking Becky, her Golden Retriever. A neighbor and Brandeis member started a conversation with her on one of her walks, and invited

her to a dinner in her home! That was the beginning of meeting people, learning Mah Jongg and joining Brandeis. Not only did Dolores join Brandeis, she is already presenting a study group for us! Dolores has always loved to sew and do projects, especially for her children and grandchildren. Now she is sharing her talent and enthusiasm with all of us, who also love to do special things for the children in our lives. Look for her study group “1,2,3, Make A Decorative Pillowcase!” We welcome you, Delores!

FREE!

If you join Brandeis now as a new member or as a returning member (lapsed membership) you will get 3 months free! You will get a 15 month membership for the price of one year!

Social Justice – Elene Kurtzman

Brandeis Chemo Caps Project By Nadine Krystall

As part of Brandeis’ Community Outreach and Social Justice Program,

Elene Kurtzman and Nadine Krystall reached out to a group of

volunteers who were able to knit and crochet. The idea was to produce

handmade caps for adults and children receiving cancer treatment.

Every Thursday morning at 10 a.m. tucked away in the “Do Nothing

Room” (which translates into the “Doing Something Room”), a large

group of women are busy at work knitting and crocheting while

catching up on the latest Westlake news and having a wonderful time.

We approached these lovely

women with our ideas. They

were so excited and enthusiastic

to get started with this project

that they put their own crafted

and personal items aside.

The caps for the adults are

called “Ali Caps” and the

children receive “Happy Caps.”

To date, we have sent hundreds

of caps both to adults in various facilities and to the children at St.

Peter’s Hospital in New Brunswick. In November, we celebrated the

kindness of these women with a lovely continental breakfast, while

dozens of busy fingers were truly producing their labors of love.

Note: If anyone can knit or crochet and would like to participate in this

project, please call Elene Kurtzman at 928-9377 or Nadine Krystall at

833-8253. We have tons of instructions. Yarn is provided for the adult

caps since they must be made of cotton. We are gladly accepting

donations of any yarn except wool for the making of the children’s Happy

Caps.

What Is Social Justice?

Social justice is

defined as working

with the

disadvantaged to

change society for the

benefit of all. A just

society understands

and values human

rights and recognizes

the dignity of every

human being.

There are many ways

that Brandeis

National Committee

chapters work within

their communities to

enable social change.

They champion

community service

projects, volunteer

and promote

awareness of social

issues.

Community Outreach - Charna Phillips & Violet Vietoris

It’s Deja Vu All Over Again!

Once again we have seen the generosity of our members

and once more Violet Vietoris’ sofa was laden with goods

donated to those less fortunate. In the last Bulletin, we had

a photo of Violet’s sofa and living room filled with school

supplies and back packs. This time there was an

outpouring for the patients at the Manor House at Centra

State. Violet was amazed that despite the hectic pace of the

holiday season, our membership took the time to

contribute supplies or cash so that our Community

Outreach could send 50 gift bags to this facility.

Natalie Bindler who delivered the gift bags said “I cannot tell you how happy they were to get the

gift bags. It made their day. The look on their faces was worth it all. Thank you Brandeis members,

one and all!”

Chapter Information Officer - Arlene Feder

Promoting Healthy Aging Through Active Living

Most adults agree an active and engaged lifestyle is essential for good health. They’ve heard about

the many benefits of physical activity, including better heart and respiratory health, greater bone

and muscle strength, and improved cognitive function. Many know that exercise can also lower the

risk of type 2 diabetes, cancer and depression. Yet only a small percentage of middle- aged and

older adults in the United States engage in regular physical exercise. With $1.5 million from the

National Institute on Aging, researchers from Brandeis, Northeastern University, Boston University,

Hebrew Senior Life/Harvard Medical School and Boston College will develop, test and promote

healthy aging strategies. Healthy aging programs will be implemented among diverse and low-

income populations. Innovative approaches to increase physical activity and decrease sedentary

behaviors will be explored.

Creation of Hassenfeld Family Innovation Center

The Hassenfeld family has donated a $2.5 million gift to the Brandeis International Business School

to establish the Hassenfeld Family Innovation Center, which will build upon the university’s

reputation as one of the nation’s leading research institutions. The center will provide a platform

for increased corporate outreach to innovative firms and provide new educational opportunities for

Brandeis students. It will also enhance efforts to bring Brandeis’ research and technology advances

to commercial partners in sectors such as life sciences, clean energy and information technology.

This gift will enable Brandeis to build the critical bridge between academic and industrial research.

Page 13: Spring 2015 bulletin

13

It will encourage new partnerships outside Brandeis and attract more

sponsored research opportunities at Brandeis. The Hassenfeld family’s

deep connection to Brandeis extends back to the university’s earliest

days, when Henry Hassenfeld, co-founder of the Hasbro toy company in

Rhode Island, made a gift to Brandeis. His daughter-in-law Sylvia

Hassenfeld, who died in August 2014, served on the Brandeis Board of

Trustees from 1996 to 2014. Two of her children, Alan Hassenfeld,

retired CEO of Hasbro, and Ellen Hassenfeld Block, have continued the

family’s involvement with Brandeis.

Author Ruth Bernadette Melon invites you to explore the research and tools used to craft her book, Journey to the White Rose in Germany. Together you will sample an array of diary entries, letters, testimony of eyewitnesses, personal interviews, documentary material and films that laid the foundation for this account. The setting of this Creative Nonfiction is Munich, where in 1942-43, student soldiers and other youths secretly penned and distributed messages condemning Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime. While the White Rose may have been brutally silenced during the Holocaust, the messages left behind stir minds and spirits decades later. Ruth’s travels to Germany,

Page 18: Spring 2015 bulletin

particularly to schools named for members of the White Rose, inspired a prologue and an epilogue for the book. Our journey together will close as we hear the voice of a German teacher at Christoph Probst Gymnasium speak of how the White Rose legacy lives among her students today.

Our second stop of the morning will be the Old School House across from Mount’s Corner in Freehold. A docent will tell us the history of the building which was built in 1847 and how a classroom functioned back in the 1800’s. Please bring $2 in cash for a donation to the Freehold Historic Preservation Commission for the maintenance of this historic site. We will meet at Covenhoven House. Please be prompt, the tour starts at 10:30. We will then drive to the School House, our second destination. Driving directions will be sent to you several days prior to the visit.
