PRESIDENT’S LETTER RAFTING… IN THE SNOW?

After an old-fashioned New England winter we take heart

in the early subtle change to spring, or as E.E. Cummings referred

to it, the “mudlicious” season:

in Just-

spring when the world is mud-

luscious the little

lame balloonman

whistles far and wee

and eddieandbill come

running from marbles and

piracies and it’s

spring

E. E. Cummings, Chansons Innocentes: I

Unlike the dormancy of nature, the LP&CT has remained

very active this winter. We’re excited to start our spring projects,

including renewed construction on the Concord River Greenway,

completing the stone patio and walls at the Spalding House, and

jumping right into a chilly start to the rafting season. Besides the

many responsibilities of land protection, planning future tree

plantings, expanding the after-school programs, and other special

projects, LP&CT is planning for our 25th Anniversary.

Please save the date for our 25th

celebration, October 16th. Over these last 25

years many of you have contributed to our

successful programs and projects. We hope to

rekindle old relationships and build new ones. The backbone of

the Trust is our membership; your participation, financial support,

and countless volunteer hours are absolutely necessary for us to

succeed. A recent new member stated "If I knew the extent of

what you accomplish I would have joined sooner.”

I would like to share with you two

accomplishments of students in our after-school

programs. Bora Poun, a former participant, is now a

Trust employee and environmental educator in our

after-school program at the Bartlett School. Also,

Sarah Silva, at left, a sophomore at Lowell High

School, was an integral part of the team that won the regional All

Girls Challenge, for inventinga medical device for those with

diabetes. Congratulations to both Sarah & Bora!

We look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming

events. Please bring along a friend, so that they can learn about

our work as well.

Sincerely yours,

Don't let the cold weather delay your reservation! The

Concord River trip is an unexpected whitewater gem that plunges

over three major class III-IV rapids. The Trust has partnered with

Zoar Outdoor to operate the rafting trips. Trips run only on

weekends during the months of April and May. The season is

short, so reserve your spot today!

We have a terrific corps of volunteer lock tenders that

demonstrate operation of the historic locks (a few are below, from

left, Mike de la Vega, Dan Gillis, and Barry Green). Thank you

to everyone that rafts, lock tends, guides the trips, or supports the

trips in any way. We also woe each season’s success to our

terrific hosts at the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center. All

proceeds support our conservation work on the Concord River.

LAHEY HEALTH TREE PLANTING SPALDING HOUSE LANDSCAPING

Visit the Spalding House at Doors Open Lowell—May 16

The “hard”scaping is nearly complete in the backyard of

the Spalding House. Stop by at Doors Open Lowell, May 16th,

1-4 PM, to see the new 600 sq. ft. blue stone patio, walkway,

dry-laid stone walls, and granite steps. With your support

students at the Bartlett School will be able to enjoy the backyard

classroom during our month-long environmental education

program with them this summer. With the stairs complete at the

back of Spalding House Park, you can now venture directly from

the banks of the Merrimack River, past the Gatekeeper’s House

and Blacksmith’s Shop, directly up to the Spalding House.

We thank Richard and Nancy Donahue, Enterprise

Bank, Brown & Rowe, Gilbane, Inc., and all the attendees at our

250th Spalding House celebration for helping the transformation

above come to fruition! In addition, we thank City of Lowell for

provided old curbing for the granite stairs. And finally, we

thank Mike Dutton of Specialty Stone for his masonry services.

Curious school

children, and adults

alike, can now visit

Hawk Valley Farm

with an eye for the

natural and land-use

history of the

property.

If you have a child in a local school system, they can

now visit Hawk Valley Farm on a school field trip, thanks the

Lowell Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by

the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. We also

thank Dr. Patricia Fontaine, UMass Lowell graduate School of

Education, for her expertise and support of this project.

You are welcome to explore Hawk Valley Farm’s trails

on your own. Explore an old cabin foundation, look for rare

butternut trees, and see where the original “old” ferry road

crossed the property. We thank Kate DiTullio, a UMass

Lowell graduate, for creating a new brochure for Hawk Valley

Farm. See www.LowellLandTrust.org for more information.

What to see when visiting

Hawk Valley Farm:

Cabin foundation wall

Old family homestead

Red maple swamp

Clay Pit Brook

Walnut trees

Volunteers from Lahey Health planted 15 trees last fall

along Father Morissette Boulevard near the UMass Lowell

campus. Lahey Health provided a grant to the Lowell Parks &

Conservation Trust, via CBS EcoMedia and the Alliance for

Community Trees, to support the project. We thank UMass

Lowell for providing significant logistical support for the event.

Where some see big dams as engineering

wonders, there’s also a growing awareness that

our own future is bound to the life and health of our rivers.

DamNation's majestic cinematography and unexpected

discoveries move through rivers and landscapes altered by dams,

but also through a metamorphosis in values, from the conquest of

the natural world to knowing ourselves as part of nature.

The Fruit Hunters Tuesday, May 26, 2015, 6:30 PM

Eyesteelfilm.com/fruithunters

The Fruit Hunters travels across culture, history and

geography to show how intertwined we are with the fruits we eat.

Our guides are devoted fruit fanatics. This film is a cinematic

odyssey through nature and commerce, The Fruit Hunters will

change not only the way we look at what we eat but how we view

our relationship to the natural world.

Angel Azul explores the artistic journey of an innovative

artist who combines creativity with an important environmental

solution; the creation of artificial coral reefs from statues he's cast

from live models. This film leaves viewers pondering our

connection to this valuable and beautiful ecosystem.

It’s rare that any of us has

three minutes to spare, but the

students in our after-school program

that spoke before a national

conference deserve your attention:

http://youtu.be/gSE3OKeukA0 This summer we’ll be offering programs at four schools in

partnership with Mass Audubon’s Drumlin Farm Wildlife

Sanctuary. Here’s what a few 3rd & 4th grade students at the

Shaughnessy School learned about East Pond last summer:

What did you learn that you did not know before the project?

“Before, I didn’t know anything about pine trees”

“I never knew there were blue herons in a pond”

“I learned names of trees and cool facts about trees”

“I learned that my project will go on for many generations”

“I learned that trees are part of an ecosystem”

“I learned that callery pear trees stink”

“You don’t want to destroy a living organism’s home”
