Dear Supporters of De La Salle Blackfeet School:

Spring is a great time of the year for a school. As the year winds down, it is a time for refl ection on what has transpired over the past year and to prepare ourselves for the next. Like the seasons of the year, the cyclic, but progressive, process of education is a healthy one. For us at De La Salle Blackfeet School, the commitment of the different elements of the Lasallian community to a quality education is phenomenal: the school was fi scally solvent last year. When this happens in a non-tuition based school, like ours, it can only mean that our donors have increased their generosity. This has allowed our teachers to creatively expand what we offer and incorporate other resources to provide the best possible education for our students. Working together, we were also good stewards by making the most of our resources and not reducing what we offer our students. Over the years, De La Salle in Browning has had diffi culty fi nding adequate housing for our teachers, particularly our volunteers. Our options for housing have been distant from the school, lacking internet access, expensive and inadequate for more than one inhabitant. During the summer of 2014, the school board approved an expenditure of $40,000 for the purchase of a house located a block from the school. Since it was not immediately needed, it is being rented until the summer, giving us immediate return on our investment. This property, a private home, will give us better options as we recruit and retain volunteers for next year. This coming summer, it is our hope to improve much of our property. On a visit to Chicago in November, Br. Paul Ackerman and I met with the Blackfeet Medical Corps, a group that has been coming to Browning for many years to assist at the hospital and do construction projects around the Reservation. This summer they will also be teaming up with another similar group called Life Is Great. We have identifi ed several projects that will immediately make a signifi cant difference with our infrastructure. Among our projects include the following: the repair and refi nishing of the soffi t of the gym at the CCD building, the repair of the water line at the principal’s house, installation of a bathroom at the new property and the beginning of an expansion for the bunkhouse. If any of these projects interest you, either as a fi nancial contributor or helping with the project, let’s talk. We are in the midst of our heavy immersion group visitations. In the past, few groups would come during the summer months. This is no longer the case, and we have visitors all summer long. In the month of June, the immersion students will assist us in our four-week summer program along with some work projects. These groups will be immensely important in the preparation for the projects listed above that will be completed by professional electricians, plumbers and general contractors who will volunteer with groups in July and August. To assist us in these projects Mark Loudenslagel, former volunteer and teacher, and Mary and Mark Miller, long-time immersion group leaders from Chicago, will be here to assist the groups for the best use of their time in Browning. Our hopes are to have the school and housing ready to receive our students and staff for the 2015-16 school year. For the past two years, we have not been able to fi nancially afford a principal. It is my belief, as well as that of the school board, that we must move in this direction. The everyday operation of the school has taken too much of my time away from attending to you - the donor - and your interest in what is done at De La Salle Blackfeet School. As we try to reach out to other interested supporters in the area and beyond, there is a need for a full-time president. We will continue to count on your assistance as we also move toward our site visit for continued accreditation in 2016. It is my desire to soon create another strategic plan for our next fi ve years. This will help us create goals to expand our program and revisit our hopes from our beginning years. Thank you for supporting De La Salle this past year. Your interest, your prayers, your sharing our story with other interested people, and certainly your fi nancial support is most appreciated and most important.

Sincerely,

Brother Dale J. MooneyPresident

On November 22, 2014, our school lost a good friend and the “Founding Father” of our immersion program. Mike Denty, staff member from 2003 to 2006, died in his Palm Desert, Calif. home.

A native Montanan from Deer Lodge, Mike had an extensive history in education before he came to DLSBS. He was very much a Renaissance man with a lifelong interest in philosophy, holding a Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame. He was also a wood worker, furniture builder, and carver. He built his own summer retirement home in Philipsburg, Mont. He was an avid Irish dancer, a historian, and a man very knowledgeable about the Reservation and the Blackfeet. He was given the Blackfeet name “Oohkotok,” or Rock because of his fascination with the earth and his stable nature.

Mike’s first immersion program experience was with students from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Mich., where he was a philosophy professor. For three years, he brought students to the Reservation where they spent the fall semester living in a wood

heated cabin with no running water. They met with Blackfeet elders to learn

about the culture and history of the tribe, and they came to De La Salle to work with our students. When he became a staff member, he suggested we start a similar program with Lasallian universities and high schools from across the United States. His idea has grown into the immersion program we have now, which involves 24 schools nationwide. Our students and school has touched the hearts of thousands of people, and the immersion program has played an important role in accomplishing this. Thank you, Mike, for

helping to make this possible. Please pray that God continues to send generous souls like

Mike to De La Salle Blackfeet School. Br. Paul Ackerman

Rest In Peace Mike Denty

Check InsEach morning during fourth grade homeroom, Ms. Stack begins the day with an exercise called “Check Ins.” She asks the

students to share a thought for the day of something they are happy about or a challenge or distraction they will leave behind as they begin a day of school. This proves to be a great exercise reminding the kids they have other things going on in their lives, but when school begins it’s important to all be present together. This exercise also encourages the kids to focus on those things in their lives they are grateful for and to build community knowing how they can support one another.

Responses that bring a smile are common such as, “I am glad I got a haircut, and I’m in,” or “I’m glad my birthday is coming up, and I’m in.” Other responses help the kids show support for one another such as, “I’m sad the girls lost their basketball game, but I’m in,” or “I’m excited for our basketball game today, and I’m in.” Ms. Stack also hears responses that make it evident there is a lot going on in the students’ lives when they leave the school at the end of the day. These responses could involve a sick family member such as, “I’m sad my grandma is not feeling well, but I’m in,” or something that has happened with a friend or family member. As part of our commitment to education that is about academics and faith, this is an important part of the day for our fourth graders.

We also know that for our donors we have much to be thankful because you have said you’re “In.” We know there are many great causes out there where you could commit your support, and we are grateful you have chosen for it to be with De La Salle Blackfeet School. Because of your support, we are able to offer an educational alternative in Browning, Mont., that gives our students a safe place to grow in faith and explore opportunities for their futures.

“We are grateful for our donors, and we’re in.”

Celebration of Sacraments

On February 12 several students received Sacraments for the fi rst time. Prepared by religion teachers Raven Dryden and Michael Hairsine, fi ve students were baptized by Fr. Ed Kohler, and 21 students made their First Communion. Each year students and families gather for this celebration before Lent begins. This opportunity helps De La Salle Blackfeet School and our families create a strong faith community together. We are grateful for our students who made this a special celebration.

The 2014-2015 school year has been busy for the De La Salle Blackfeet Sacred Star athletic program. Students have had the opportunity to compete in five sports, including boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, girls volleyball, boys wrestling and track and field.

Our school competes with other schools in the Northern Middle School Athletic Association (NMSAA). These schools, which are all in northern Montana, include Cut Bank, Browning, Boarding Dorm, Choteau, Fairfield, Conrad and East Glacier.

We thank our athletic director, Michael Hairsine, and all of our coaches for the time they have put in this year to teach our students skills and guide them in the spirit of competition.

Catholic Schools Week 2015During the week of Jan. 25-31, De La Salle Blackfeet School celebrated Catholic Schools Week in

conjunction with the National Catholic Education Association and Catholic schools across the country. The theme for this year’s celebration was, “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”

Activities at De La Salle Blackfeet included a community brunch after Mass on Sunday, Jan. 25, a Bingo night for students and families, a student talent show and essay contest, a morning of service in the Browning community, and much more. We are also thankful for our immersion group from Calvert Hall High School in Baltimore who provided a great amount of help with the week’s activities.

Robert, 4th grade

“DLSBS has taught me to always respect people and DLSBS is a community because we all go to church. The Catholic school has made me a better person.”

Aliyah, 8th grade

“It helps me because it makes me happy. Makes me more mature by learning my manners. Helps me to be better at math. Being more kind, respecting my elders, parent, and teachers.”

Aria, 5th grade

For their Catholic Schools Week

service project, the fourth grade class made lunches and passed them out to those in need on
