SR. MARY E. BUR, IHM RETIRES AS PRINCIPAL

After 27 years of leadership, Sister Mary Elizabeth Bur,

IHM, Principal of West Catholic Preparatory High School,

will retire at the end of the 2014-15 academic year. A

model Catholic educator, Sister Mary is well steeped in

Catholic education. Sister is a graduate of Immaculate

Conception Elementary in Jenkintown, Little Flower

Catholic High School for Girls, Immaculata University

(B.A. English, Music), and Villanova University (M.A.

English).

After serving as an educator in Catholic elementary

education, Sister Mary became Assistant Principal of West

remained in that position through the merger with the

Boys High School in 1989. In 1993, Sister became Principal

of the new West Philadelphia Catholic High School. At

the close of the current school year, Sr. Mary will have

the Christian Schools Lasallian Region of North America

honored Sister with the 2014 Lasallian Educator Award

for outstanding work and dedication to the charism of

Saint La Salle.

Sister Mary retires with 50 years of leadership and service

in Catholic education. When asked about her time at

WCP, Sister remarked, “What an honor and privilege

it has been for me to have been a part of the

West Catholic tradition. My gratitude goes out to all

those who walked with me through these years:

DEAR FRIENDS,

In this New Year, 2015, let me wish you the very best! One half of the

academic year is behind us and I continue to see great things

happening in our classrooms. Our Engineering Technology Academy is

off to a great start with 24 freshmen setting the pace for future classes

of WCP engineers. Our Fine Arts program has done nothing but

expand! Just think, three years ago we had just 18 musicians and today,

we have 97 students spread across four bands and the beginnings of a

small chorus. I see only great things for these programs!

This January, Sister Mary Bur, IHM, our Principal for more than two

decades, has announced her retirement. Sister has been the main stay

across these 25 years as a merged school. The school community owes a

major debt to Sister for her positive leadership and guidance through

turbulent times of this quarter century. The school will recognize Sister

Mary Elizabeth with a special celebration on campus this May. I invite

all graduates, especially those over the past 25 years, to come and

express your appreciation to Sister for a job well done!

Looking ahead, I know you will join me in welcoming new leadership in

this key role and that you will be supportive of our new Principal.

You should know that a search committee, led by our Board of Trustees,

is actively engaged in a process to recruit the right academic leader

for our school. Be assured that this committee and our process is

aggressive, thorough, and professional, and we will have

good news to share soon.

Other personnel changes have occurred in key

positions at the school. Andrew Brady ‘02, has

left the Advancement team to assume a new role

within the BLOCS organization with the sole

purpose of raising an additional $1M in tax-

credits for WCP specifically – a position that has

been possible through our partnership with the

Maguire Foundation! Andrew’s replacement is

Ms. Regina Hairston, who will become Director

of Annual Giving and Special Events. Regina is

the first woman to assume this key role in our Advancement team, and

I hope you will join me in welcoming, and more so, in supporting her in

an important area for our future success!

As I end this letter, let me thank those who have supported this year’s

“Invest in West Fund” and invite all others to take seriously the

responsibility of assisting today’s WCP student body in meeting the

financial challenge of today’s Catholic education.

It has been a tremendous year of giving to West Catholic Prep! We would

like to thank the more than 2,500 donors whom have contributed a gift

to our school to date.

We are excited about the opportunity to reach our 2014-15 unrestricted

fundraising goal of $1,198,500! Unrestricted fundraising efforts help to

underwrite our scholarship and financial aid program, academic and

athletic programs, personnel additions, and other student related needs

not covered by tuition. Additionally, we have received over $300,000 in

restricted gifts, for things such as endowed scholarships, academics, and

fine art programs.

Our school population, academic and athletic programs, teaching and

counseling faculty, and administration are all growing! This is great news

for our sustainability, but also requires that we meet these growing

needs through fundraising efforts. We thank those that have contributed

to date, and encourage those whom have not to once again step up and

help us meet our goal.

THANK YOU AL GABRIELE!After three years of service, Chairman of the

Board of Trustees, Al Gabriele will step down

as chairman at the end of the year.

Gabriele came to West Catholic Prep in June of

2012 as an integral part of Brother Richard

Kestler’s new vision for the school. Knowing

that he needed strong leadership at the

highest level and looking for a veteran Board

leader, Brother turned to Al Gabriele.

“For the past eleven years it has been my privilege to work and learn

from Al Gabriele in his role as Board Chair,” said Brother Richard Kestler.

“Ever mindful of the school’s mission and strategic plan, Al has focused

West Catholic Prep on success in enrollment growth, academic and

athletic programming, financial viability, and partnerships with nearby

universities and institutions. So much of the recent success of WCP can

be attributed to the leadership of Al Gabriele. Simply put, Al has

brought passion and success to his leadership of the WCP Board during

these three years. Thank you for a job well done.”

Al has never cut a corner or called for a quick fix, but instead speaks of

mission, vision, and sustainability. He never allows the Board to veer off

task and makes sure of that with his insistence to read aloud the WCP

mission statement at the start of each board meeting. A reminder that

vision is imperative to Board work, Al often recites a favorite quote

from Proverbs: “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” And, when

a quick fix might be offered, Al is quick to remind the Board that it is

the sons and daughters of those we serve today that we must have in

mind when making decisions. Under Gabriele’s leadership, West Catholic

Prep has grown tremendously in just three years. Here is a snapshot

of some successes during his tenure:

P Enrollment growth of 30%

P $4,000,000 in total fundraising

P Implemented a Board of Limited Jurisdiction, the first of its kind in our system

P New school name and branding initiative

P Forged partnerships with local universities

P Advances in academic programming and technology

In addition to leading West Catholic Prep, Gabriele successfully

completed a $25 million capital campaign at La Salle College High

School. He co-chaired Roman Catholic High School’s Renaissance at

Roman building campaign raising nearly $4.5 million in addition to

serving on the Board of Trustees at Fox Chase Cancer Center and

Immaculata University.

We are extremely grateful to Al for his willingness to lead our

Board of Trustees over the past three years and are pleased with

the legacy he is leaving behind at West Catholic Prep! We wish him

well in all his future endeavors.

SCHOOL NEWS

The Burrs Girls Varsity Basketball Team see first PIAA playoff berth under second season Head Coach Beulah Osueke.

Coach Osueke came to West Catholic Prep as the Girls’ Head Varsity

Basketball Coach in 2013. In danger of not having a season, Osueke

was hired in October only a month prior to the start of the season and

had to hit the ground running forgoing a preseason. “The first thing

we had to do was build mental toughness,” said Osueke, “We had to

communicate to the girls that they are important as a team, and then

we could begin working on physical skills”.

This year, Coach Osueke began developing the team in September by

working on conditioning and strengthening providing the team an

invaluable preseason. A junior varsity team was established to give

younger more inexperienced players time to grow and develop which

will benefit the Varsity team in the future.

As a former basketball player at Ouachita Baptist University in

Arkansas, Osueke understands the importance of relationships. She

plans to grow the program organically by building relationships with players and parents. Osueke currently coaches a 7th grade AAU team, holds

clinics and seasonal camps where she hopes to develop potential players. This summer two girls basketball camps will be offered for grades 6-9

June 22-26 and July 20-24. As we went to press, The Lady Burrs won the PIAA District 12 Single A Championship. Congratulations to the Girls

Varsity Basketball Team and the Coaching Staff.

ALADDIN COMES TO WESTUnder the artistic direction of Andre

Saballette ’04, Director of the West Theater

Arts Program, West Catholic Prep

presented Aladdin on Friday, March 13, 14

and 15. The performance was held in the

WCP auditorium.

Aladdin, the 1992 comedy written by Ron

Clements and John Musker, depicts a

street urchin vying for the

love of a beautiful

princess by using a

genie’s magic

power to falsely present

himself as a prince in order to

marry her. “We chose Aladdin

because it plays to our students’

strengths,” said Aaron Spence ’03, the

show’s music producer, “We have a lot of

funny kids and kids who can really sing.

Even the ones that can’t sing as well are

able to enjoy the songs they grew up

enjoying.”

Many students tend to try out for the

musical their freshman year and stick with

it. They are very comfortable on stage.

Every year, however, a few junior or senior

students step out of their comfort zones

and challenge themselves in new ways.

“Senior Cassie Brice, understudy for Genie,

has the best comedic timing I’ve seen in a

long time,” remarked

Spence, “And this was

her first time ever on

stage.” Marta Teferi, also

a senior, transitioned from

being a major presence on

stage to the production’s

student director.

Many students love theater and want to

see if they really want to perform beyond

their days at West. “We’re hoping to have

more students like Marta who wish to

challenge themselves in a new ways and

examine the other aspects of show

production”, summed up Spence.

BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL UPDATEThis year our Boys Varsity Basketball team

finished a tough season as they looked to

rebuild after suffering the loss of key

veteran players.

With a decimated roster due to

graduation and other factors, Coach

“Jazz” Williams ’97 was forced to go

young, with sophomore Jeohnni Moore

and freshmen Keyohn and Stefon Maddox

receiving big minutes for the Burrs. Some

seniors have stepped up in big ways,

including Jahmil Harris, Brandon Cole,

Pasquale DiMascio, and Stefon Jones.

Specifically, Jahmil Harris is among the top

in the PCL in points, assists, and rebounds.

“Although it has been a struggle as far as

record,” remarked Williams, “It will

benefit us in the future because those kids

had a chance to get some experience on

the varsity level which will help them

going forward.”

Philadelphia Catholic League basketball is

among the toughest leagues in the

country. Coach Williams is prepared to

breakthrough soon as he is growing this

program and will begin to attract and

maintain the finest student-athletes in the

City. With young talent and a growing

competitive mindset, we look forward to

the 2016 season!

Over 95% of WCP students are from

failing public school

districts. Therefore your state tax dollars

can go directly

towards taking young men and

women out of these failing schools and giving them a

chance to excel here at West Catholic Prep. The process is as simple as filling out a one

page form, and West Catholic can handle the rest of the

process. If you have an interest in the OSTC program or have questions about the program, contact us today!
