The power of peace of mind

From deep freezes and ice storms in winter to severe thunderstorms in summer,

extreme weather and power outages cause a lot of worry year-round.

A backup generator from Generac can make all the difference: When the power lines go down, your generator turns on automatically to keep your lights on, medical devices operating and appliances, heating system, A/C and sump pumps running until the utility can make repairs.

A generator also keeps security systems operational, too — that’s important if the power fails while you are away from home.

Our generator experts can assess your needs and help you choose the best equipment for your home to provide peace of mind during power emergencies.

In addition, if you or someone you know runs a business, we can help you stay open during power outages so you maintain a competitive advantage. Our product line includes indus-trial generators.

Remember, you cannot prevent power outages, but you can prepare for them.

Dear Friends,

Over the years, we have worked hard to set ourselves apart from other heating and air conditioning service companies. One important way we do this is through our highly skilled team of installers.

Many contractors take a “cookie-cutter” approach to equipment installations. That costs less, but almost always leads to such problems as uneven temperatures, wasted energy, higher bills and frequent breakdowns.

We have never taken that approach. Since no two houses are exactly the same, our technicians treat every job like a custom project. They take the time to get the job done right to ensure maximum effi ciency and provide you with the best return on your investment.

When you ask us to install a new heating or cooling system, we take the time to evaluate your home’s infrastructure, discuss any comfort problems you have and listen

At first glance, this one seems to make sense: If you close the heating vents in seldom-used rooms during the winter, you’ll use less heat and save money.

We do not recommend this! Closing some vents disrupts normal air flow, causing an imbalance that will just make your furnace work harder. Closing vents can also raise the risk of frozen pipes, especially in rooms that tend to be on the cold side anyway.

It’s always better to keep the temperature at a comfortable level throughout your home and program it with energy-saving settings when the house is empty or everyone is asleep.

If you have a zoned system, you already have the power to vary the temperature in different rooms, eliminating the temptation of shutting the heat off completely in parts of your home.

Bottom line: It’s a myth that you’ll save money if you close the heating vents in some rooms.

It seems ironic that conventional duct tape can be used in countless ways — from performing household repairs to creating a prom dress — with one big exception: sealing ducts. Did you ever wonder why that’s so?

Like many inventions, duct tape originated with U.S. military needs during World War II, where it was first used to seal ammunition cases to protect them from moisture. Back then, soldiers dubbed it duck tape — either because it repelled water (like water off a duck’s back) or because it contained strips of durable duck cloth.

Naturally, the tape made it back to the States, where contractors started using it to connect ductwork in newly built homes. Researchers eventually concluded that the tape shouldn’t be used to seal ducts because under certain conditions, it becomes brittle and peels away.

Today, there are many different proven methods of duct sealing, including spray treatments that coat the interior of the ductwork. Eliminating cracks and gaps in your ductwork quickly pays for itself through monthly savings on your heating and air conditioning expenses. Please contact us if you would like us to evaluate your ducts for air leakage.

Bottom line: It’s true that conven-tional duct tape should not be used to seal ducts.

Have you done this before? It’s a super-cold winter evening and you arrive at a home that feels chilly. You immediately stride to your thermostat and move the temperature setting as high as it will go. You smile as you hear the burner kick on. Now, you think, the house is going to get warm really fast. But is that the truth…or a myth?

The fact is, your furnace or boiler doesn’t work like a car — there is no gas pedal to step on to make it go faster. Your system will produce heat at the same rate regardless of whether your thermostat is set to 68° or 85°. Setting the thermostat higher just makes your system work longer and burn more fuel.

TIP: For better temperature control, trade in your old digital or manual thermostat for a wireless remote smart thermostat. After you register it online, you can access it from any location and adjust temperatures for both comfort and savings.

Bottom line: It’s a myth that your home heats up faster when you turn the thermostat all the way up.

It seems logical. Your old, 50% efficient furnace has reached the end of the line and you replace it with a new furnace with an 85% efficiency rating. With such a big boost in energy efficiency, all you have to do now is sit back and count all the money you will save on heat for years to come. This is true — under one important condition: Your new furnace needs to be sized and installed correctly.

Sizing it up. Sizing refers to how much Btu power the system has. If a contractor installs something too powerful (oversized), it will give you more heat than you need, wasting energy and money. But if the system doesn’t have enough power (undersized), your home will not feel comfortable; you will also spend more on energy because the furnace will keep turning on.

Installing it right. Once we select a properly sized system, we install it the right way. This requires skilled technicians with specialized training. The biggest mistake you can make is choosing the wrong contractor. Some contractors will be glad to sell you equipment at a low price — but won’t be available if it doesn’t work properly. Or you may encounter a salesman who wants to sell you “the latest thing”— but won’t tell you about design flaws that cause the system to work poorly.

Bottom line: Installing a new heating system will increase energy efficiency and save you money as long as the furnace is sized and installed correctly.

Turn it up or leave it alone? Keep it open or shut it off?

Figuring out how to lower your energy bills while staying comfortable can be confusing,

especially when it’s hard to separatetruth from myth.

Write “truth” or “myth” in the blank spaces and then read the articles to see how much you know.

Heating and cooling system replacement costs

A new heating or cooling system is a major investment. It’s important to compare both the up-front and long-term costs.

The up-front cost is the dollar fi gure on the price tag, minus any rebates or discounts. Higher energy-effi ciency ratings come at a higher cost.

But a low price doesn’t necessarily indicate a good buy. To better estimate value, you should consider costs incurred over the system’s lifetime, which correlate to equipment quality, durability, maintenance, energy effi ciency and quality of installation.

Carolina’s team of pros can help you choose the best system for your home — and your budget. We are an authorized dealer for top brands including Carrier and Mitsubishi, and you can absolutely rely on us to install your system so it will deliver years of comfort and energy effi ciency.

Carolina Heating is pleased to welcome our newest comfort

specialist, Vince Peck. He brings nearly 30 years of experience to the team, with specialized training from Mitsubishi, Carrier and York.

When Vince moved to the area from Gainsville, Georgia, he researched local companies, and Carolina seemed like a perfect fi t for him.

“They had the best reputation

around,” he says. When Vince meets with customers,

he asks a lot of questions about their house’s history — old problems, new problems — so he can help make the home more comfortable.

What are Carolina customers saying?

“This past Tuesday evening our water heater quit. Called CHS and B.J. came out the next morning, checked it all out, gave us a price and by the afternoon, technicians Ramon and Craig were installing our new water heater. Supervisor Kyle came by to lend a hand as well. Start to fi nish we had good communication between the offi ce, supervisors and technicians. Everyone was polite, professional and effi cient. Thank you Carolina Heating Service!!” — Linda S.

“I’m so pleased with Carolina Heating Service. I have continued to do business with them in our new house. My mom is now using them as well and couldn’t be happier!” — Lynn S.

“I had an emergency with my Generac generator. On very short notice, your service tech arrived. He found the problem immediately and fi xed the battery charger. Carolina Heating Service should be proud to have such a representative and technician. Aaron knows his work and does it well. Thanks again.” — Ira G.
