When robins return to your yard, a wildflower blooms in the forest, or a tree frog calls in the night they announce nature’s subtle shift from winter to spring. Phenology is the science of observing these seasonal changes in nature and recording and thinking about them. Phenological data allows us to see the earth in the long term, helping us to observe changes that might otherwise go unnoticed. For instance, data collected from 1935 to 1998 in Sauk County, Wisconsin by the famous wildlife ecologist and conservationist Aldo Leopold and his daughter Nina Leopold Bradley show us that many plants and animals have shifted their date of first bloom or spring arrival by as much as six days. To learn more about their work, visit: http://climatewisconsin.org/story/phenology. Aldo Leopold said that “Keeping records enhances the pleasure of the search”, something that the members of Wehr’s Phenology group heartily agree with. This group of volunteers walks Wehr’s trails every Monday morning to record observations of birds and plants in bloom. You can keep up with their sightings on our “What’s In Bloom” and “Bird Sightings” boards in the Visitor Center and follow Wehr Nature Center on Facebook to see what is new in nature. Interested in learning how you can help the earth by tuning into her rhythms? Become a volunteer phenologist (see Volunteers}, join in citizen science projects like Bat Night and Butterfly Count, or attend one of our spring nature walks or programs. Workshop Sunday, June 25, 9-11:30 am Learn the basics of butterfly identification with Butterfly Expert, Pat Fojut, then enjoy a morning hike through the woods and prairie in search of our fluttery friends. Butterflies will be counted and recorded as part of our 30th Annual Butterfly Count. Participants may continue on to other Milwaukee County Park locations for the afternoon session of the count (optional). Reservations guarantee a space. Walk-ins are welcome as space allows. MEET YETTA WADEThere’s a new face at Wehr! Yetta Wade returned in January as Wehr’s Maintenance Worker and has already proven herself to be an enthusi-astic and delightful addition. Yetta is replacing Lamont Woods who has left for full-time employment. (Best wishes and good luck to Lamont.)Yetta is a Milwaukee native who spent a short time working at Wehr in 2013 and more recently at the Milwau-kee County Zoo. Before that, she was employed at the Martin Luther King Center for five years. She is a graduate of the Milwaukee School of Entrepre-neurship and has exciting plans for her future. She would like to one day open a Youth Home for Teen Girls. Along the way she hopes to build up her bankroll by working construction. She holds a certification in construction for the state of Wisconsin.Yetta’s two girls, eight and two, are into karate, so Yetta volunteers as a karate mom and assists in fundraising for the organization. This energetic young woman also runs track, plays tennis, and loves to clean. Yetta is outgoing, observant, a quick learner, and an eager worker. She is a real asset to theWehr team.

THE FINAL PIECE – ACCESSIBLE BATHROOMSIn January, a small group of creative individuals spent a morning brainstorming while they wandered around in the depths of Wehr’s basement. They chased the pipes between the restrooms and in and out of the hallways at the front of the building. With plans and pencils they began sketching ideas for how to make Wehr’s accessible restrooms a reality. Creating accessible restrooms is the last phase of the Friends of Wehr Accessibility Project. While not the most beautiful or exciting part of this multi-year project, it is certainly the one part that Wehr cannot live without. Over the next couple of months, Zimmerman Architectural Studios will take the brainstorming ideas produced that morning and turn them into a series of ideas on how to make Wehr’s restrooms accessible. Once the designs are submitted, the Friends and the Parks Department will choose the

best fit for Wehr. Then the hard work begins…raising money to get the project built. Raising money is never easy, but it can be fun. Some great ideas have been suggested already. “Crowdsource” a toilet, a “Go Fund Me” page, scavenger hunt through Wehr to find the camouflaged “turkey toilets”, and more. Wehr’s past fundraising efforts have succeeded in replacing windows, creating a new amphitheater and stage, installing new front walkways, and constructing an accessible boardwalk – all because of community involvement. We need everyone’s help to get this job done also. Wehr has alwayshad its greatest success when the whole community works together. If you want to help with the fundraising or just want to contribute to our new accessible restrooms, please e-mail me or give me a call. [email protected] 414-425-8550

Make Memories This Summer at Adventure Summer Day Camp

Three Decades of Butterfly Counts at the Wehr Nature Center By Pat Fojut I was younger in 1988. A recently hired part-time naturalist and new to butterflying, I was excited to go into the field with Wehr Nature Center (WNC) Director Marinette Nowak and Marion Lopina. These butterfly experts helped us rookies recognize butterflies by field marks and behavior. I was hooked when we spotted swallowtails, skippers, hairstreaks and Monarchs. We recorded 26 butterfly species, and surprisingly, we’ve never found that many species since. I am surprised that this year marks my 30th season of the North American Butterfly Association’s (NABA) Butterfly Count here at Wehr. We now call surveys like this citizen science, because the data can be collected by everyone. People use binoculars and cameras to monitor butterfly populations and build a species database. This helps to maintain and improve biodiversity in our local parks. In 2016, after early morning rains, WNC Naturalist Emily Brown and I ventured out at 10 a.m. With the overcast and humid conditions, we found a few reliable species including Common Wood Nymph and Little Wood Satyr fluttering in the tall grass. Later we counted Great Spangled Fritillary, Silver-spotted Skipper, and other common butterflies in the prairie and the gardens near the building. It was fun to find some uncommon butterflies, Banded Hairstreak, Common Buckeye, and Northern Broken Dash Skipper, along the prairie trail and in the compost area. Later in the day, I was able to visit the mature native grasslands of Warnimont Park, the best Monarch haven along Lake Michigan. I explored the beech/maple Forest at Falk Park where a lone Tiger Swallowtail was visiting Basswood leaves to lay eggs. Finally I stopped back at my favorite spot, the intersection of the WNC drive and the prairie trail. Here the Indian Hemp flowers profusely. I even spotted a new butterfly to Milwaukee County, the Silvery Checkerspot. Luckily I got a snapshot to make it official. One more species seen at Wehr Nature Center. In recent years of the count, we’ve had an average of 16 butterfly species for 6 hours of monitoring. The high count for a single day was 26 species (1988). The high for one week was 35 species (July 2003). In the last 30 years, a total of 54 species have been documented here.

Many visitors are interested in the flashy orange and black Monarch butterfly. Count records show that fewer Monarchs have been seen at WNC since 2012. A combination of factors including habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change have led to long-term declines across the continent for the species according to US Fish & Wildlife Services. There were also reports of a rare snowstorm on the Mexican wintering grounds in March of 2016. The insect adaptation of high reproduction can help bring the population back, and in July 2016, we did see Monarchs busy laying eggs on milkweed host plants. In Wisconsin, our best practice is to provide breeding habitat for butterflies and pollinators in backyard gardens and community parklands.
