Presidents MessageHello Badgers!

I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the “off-season”. It was a pleasure to see many of you at the Winter Dinner in January. The setting at Best Place was fitting, the food & libations were fantastic, the slide show compiled by Dan Riedel was awesome, the camaraderie & good fellowship were second to none, what a great evening! Thanks again to Ellen & Al Feyereisen and all the com-mittee members that pulled this together! I would also like to recognize Mike & Linda Handle who graciously donated their 50/50 winnings back to the chapter treasury, thanks much Mike & Linda! We will put your donation to use for upcoming chapter activities. Ron & Joanne Enk were the lucky winners of the Harley Bike Rental weekend donated to us by Harley-Davidson of Madison. We raised $620 to build our treasury from just that raffle. I did send a thank-you card to owner Virgil Schulen-berg for this generous donation and will be stopping by to say hi at my next opportunity. If you happen to be in the area and can stop, please do so and say “Thanks”. Special thanks go to Badger Dennis Schaefer who, on his own, put this together for us. We are actively looking for volunteers to put together the 2018 edition of the Winter Dinner, who’s next to step up and help? Feel free to contact any of the chapter officers if interested.

As usual, there was a large contingent of Badgers at the Mama Tried “Flat Out Friday” races as well as the bike show on Satur-day & Sunday. The races were “a gas” and the show was as eclectic as ever with many different manufacturers, builders and genre’s represented. The sheer volume of people on Saturday was something to see! Facility capacity was reached by noon and people could only get in as some left, incredible! The Brewtown Rumble/Badger Heritage & BUILD booths were well attended all weekend, anchored by Kevin Frank & Robin Barry. Volunteers shifted in and out throughout the weekend to relieve each other so everyone could enjoy the show or just take a break, great teamwork! Judging from the amount of interest at the booth and if that is any indication of Rumble attendance this year, we are gonna “blow the doors off”! There was also significant interest in the Badgers and I wish I wouldn’t have forgotten the paper sign-up forms as we could have signed up a handful or more of new Badgers on the spot! I hope we see an up-tick of new member sign-ups through our chapter web page. It was good to meet some of the BUILD mentors and talk to them about the program. These volunteers have a genuine passion for what they are doing. The more I get to know these people the more I am confident our support & efforts are in the absolute right place. Chapter Secretary Josh Richardson played a dual role as a BUILD Board of Directors representative and promoting the Badgers all weekend, Thanks for your support Josh!

As I’m penning this message to you, I’m on my flight home from Daytona after attending our first of two bi-annual in-person AMCA Board of Directors meetings (we meet at least 4 more times via web-conference too). The agenda was “jam packed” with much to do/review/approve/discuss, 13 ½ hours’ worth! Front and center was the AMCA strategic plan which is our first stab at a 1/2/5- year outlook for the club with membership growth & retention a recurring theme within the plan. You’ll learn more about this in an upcoming issue of The Antique Motorcycle later this year. We reviewed new chapter & road run applications, club financials and other fiduciary concerns for an organization of this size and breadth. I learned a lot and am looking forward to collaborating with my new BOD colleagues as well as the opportunity to represent all of you in this new role! More to come on all of this, stay tuned. Please know that if there is anything on your mind regarding the AMCA, AMF (Antique Motorcycle Foundation) or our chapter, you can give me a call or drop me an email. I may not have all the answers but I know where to get ‘em! :o)

We do coordinate our bi-annual meetings to coincide with a national event and this meeting was scheduled to complement the Sunshine Chapter National Meet on Friday & Saturday. It was great to meet new people from a different region and see how they coordinated and put on an event. Much like the Badgers, there were dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly to keep things on-track and take care of everyone’s needs. Friday evening the chapter put on a “fish boil” for members and participants who bought a pass. I gotta tell you this was one of the best feeds I have ever had at a national! The “fresh off the boat” shrimp were more the size of baby lobsters and the little neck clams were like eating candy, mmmmm’good! Our own Badger Johnny Daney, who is also a Sunshine member, helped to prepare the great food, thanks Johnny! The vendor field was nearly at capacity and as I departed the grounds late Saturday morning the judging field was nearly full as well. I estimate there were at least 50 bikes on display and noted the following marques: Triumph, BSA, Yamaha, Honda, Mondial, Indian and of course Harley-Davidson, there were more. Why I mention this is just to reinforce the fact that the AMCA and all her chapters welcome all brands of motorcycles and their owners to participate. The judges led by our own Don Dzurick have an ever-increasing challenge of engaging marque experts to participate. Do you have some marque or organizational expertise to share? If so, judging may be a way for you to get involved!

Our trademark submission for “Let Goodfellowship Prevail in the Greatest Sport on Earth – Motorcycling” has made it to the U.S. Patent and Trade Office and is in line for review by the USPTO attorney’s. It is now a waiting game but I do take a monthly “look-see” on the USPTO website to check on progress. This will likely take 6-8 months before we are “official”.

One final note, please look at the upcoming local & national events schedule in this issue and I hope you can all carve out some time to participate over the course of this year. If you get a chance, get out to one of the national’s, especially the road runs, you will not regret it!

Take care and see you at the Spring Meeting!

Our 2017 Winter Dinner took place at Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery in Milwaukee, WI. We had about 120 members in attendance with a delicious buffet provided by Saz’s Catering from Milwaukee. The large “Great Hall” was a fantastic location for our dinner and Good Fellowship!

A large screen and projector provided the backdrop for a comprehensive slide show of the hundreds of photos taken at our events during 2016 - thanks Cathy Drexler, Jeff Hill and Steve Peters for the photos and Dan Riedel for the slide show. A short meeting occurred with the an-nouncement of where our 2017 Badger Derby weekend ride will be this year as well as a few words about other events in 2017. A Great Evening! Steve Peters

Let’s start with thanks to the planning committee. Great ven-ue, tasty meal, good organization, fun prizes….lucky Jo Ann ! I had the pleasure of meeting a couple of our new members, and love that they are introduced and acknowledged at this event.

When reviewing the images from that evening, I noticed how many featured groups of people gathered over photos on a smart phone, something unforeseen by the founders of the AMCA. Yet the photos that brought people together, like the preserved office at the Best Place in the Pabst Brewery com-plex, were of old bikes, bikes that pre-dated our smart phones by many years.

To put it in French: Plus ça change; plus c’est la meme chose: the more it changes, the more it stays the same. Cathy Drexler

Hey Badgers!

To restore or not to restore? That is one question I’m sure many members of our chapter as well as many of the membership of the AMCA has asked them-selves over the years. We are after all an antique motorcycle club and if you read about the club on the AMCA website you will see these words –“From the beginning the purpose of the club has been the “preservation, restoration and operation of old-time motorcycles.” So why is there a question?

I’m sure for many folks that have asked this question themselves and each will have their own unique answer(s) – myself included. For those of you familiar with the two motorcycles I own, neither of them are in original or restored con-

dition, but are somewhat customized to my own taste.

The first bike I purchased in 1985 was not all original, but was missing a few original parts. As I found it difficult at the time (mid 1980’s) to find Italian H-D parts, I decided to just find what-ever parts I could and just make them fit my bike. Keep in mind this was long before the Internet or even my knowledge of the AMCA or AMC as it was know at that time. Over the six years I rode the bike I continued beyond only the necessary parts and began to add more parts not normally found on a 1973 SX 350, but more so on a larger H-D bagger. The result is pictured here in the early 1990’s. I have only recently taken the bike out of its 25 year storage and at this time I‘m not sure what I will do with the bike. All of the customization is only bolted on, so no original parts were damaged and could fairly easily put back to original with the availability of NOS parts.

As for my 1974 XLCH Sportster, when I bought it in 1992, it had already been changed from original, so I figured I had two choices – go back to original or continue customizing it. At the time I chose the latter, but not exactly the look I have today. It was not until several years later after the H-D 95th Anniversary that I decided to make the bike look older – something more like a bike from the 1930’s – ‘40’s. This was also before I even knew about the AMCA. As with my 350, I can still put the Sporty back to original as no original parts still on the bike have been damaged, but to be honest, I don’t really care for the look of an original ’74 Sportster. I am very pleased with how my bike looks now and enjoy riding it as well.

So, what does all of this mean? To me it means that no matter what kind of old motorcycle you have it will certainly be wel-come in our club and chapter. I know many of our chapter mem-

bers have original/restored machines, but many of us have mild or radical customs as well. I know that my Sportster will never able to be judged at an AMCA event, which is ok with me - maybe it’s the artist in me. Perhaps someday I may have a restored bike, but for now I have very happy to ride what I have. So, as long as you enjoy your ride – keep it any way you like.

Take care and stay safe!

2017 Mama Tried Motorcycle ShowMilwaukee, WI - February 18-19, 2017

Photos and Story by Steve Peters

The fourth year of the Mama Tried Motorcycle Show in the Third Ward was not disappointing. There were many Badgers viewing the bikes as well as several Badgers having bikes in the show.

I’m sure I will miss some names, but I recall seeing bikes form Wade Mueller, Mike Lange, Dennis Worthy, Bill Ro-driguez and Chris Tribbey with his 1911 Excelsior - Can-nonball Run bike.

Also we had a Brewtown Rumble table with several com-mittee members taking care of things there with many spectators showing an interest in the show. The warm weather cancelled the ice riding at the McKinley Marina, but it took place on a smaller inland lake. Steve Peters

2017 Mama Tried Motorcycle ShowMilwaukee, WI - February 18-19, 2017Photos and Story by Cathy Drexler

Maybe the name for this year’s show should be “Mama Tired.” As in: Mama Nature. Too tired to make ice. There were few com-plaints among the crowd in line on the sunny Saturday in the mid-60’s. The show began in the street, where the many bikes and cars felt like an extension of the scene inside.

Always great to see fellow Badgers, and the number of young people in attendance was nice. My favorite part of the show was seeing Chris Tribbey and his 1911 Cannonball-bound Excelsior K. Chris was surrounded by fascinated people of all ages every time I glanced in that direction. Other great bikes included Mike Lange’s 1929 FHAC Twin-Cam racing sidecar rig and, of course, Wade’s 1924 Henderson Deluxe and 1934 Sertum.

The preview of the Brewtown Rumble and the work of the Build program keep me looking forward to what’s ahead this year. Cathy Drexler

This show has been something Steve Pozza and myself have attended for the last four years or so. This year his son, Anthony came as well bringing his 1958 Triumph. Steve brought his 1967 Bonneville too, both to be Judged and scored.

The drive out was uneventful, we left Thursday morning at 4:00am to get there early enough, just an all-around nice day to travel. We made some stops on the way like the world’s largest truck stop for breakfast. We arrived at the hotel to get our room and headed to the event site to drop off the bikes. Seeing old friends and faces from previous years, stopping to visit is half the fun but it makes for a long day. Pa-perwork was filled out and bikes unloaded, everything getting judged needs to run so fire up the Triumphs and park them in their respective spots. We were able to look over the swap meet parts before the event even started the next day, scored a few nice items that I had to have, ok maybe I just wanted them, and being able to get a good price. We had dinner at our usual spot, a great BBQ place we hit every year then back the hotel.

We woke up the next morning to about three inches of snow and a strong wind with temps about 40 degrees colder than the day before. The show seemed to have as many vendors and participants as in years past even with the bad weather. People come from a pretty good distance to attend this show. You may find this hard to believe, but we spent most of the day talking to everyone at the event. The folks hosting it as well as the vendors, I would say a third of the people there came from Wisconsin. After finding more good deals on parts the day ends with a dinner hosted by the Omaha Chapter so we can sit with our friends and talk old bikes, go figure. They had a member talk about the Henderson Co. from start to finish, quite interesting. With our bellies full we headed back to the hotel to get some rest for another day of old bikes.

Saturday was judging and awards, I jumped in as an apprentice judge helping with the Shovelheads. Great learning experience, and had a good time too. When all was tallied up the awards were handed out, Anthony’s 1958 T110 scored a 97.5 Senior first, Steve’s 1967 Bonneville scored a 96.5 Junior first, way to go guys! After judging we loaded up the bikes, said our good byes and hit the road, plan was to drive about half way and get home on Sunday. Well, good conversation and great tunes, the next thing you know we crossed the Wisconsin state line after a long day at the event I was home by midnight. A great time was had by all, I would recommend if you have nothing to do in February check out this fine event. Here are some pictures I took of the many bikes I liked.

It was 1992 and I was making the rounds of Harley – Davidson dealerships in search of parts for one of my motorcycles. I had just pulled up to Lakeshore Harley-Davidson in Waukegan, Illinois, when I saw that they had a white police bike parked by the front door. I gave it the once-over and decided it was pretty cool. I noticed that it had a foot clutch and hand shift. It had Atlantic City, New Jersey police emblems on the saddlebags. Interesting!

While waiting at the service counter for my parts, I couldn’t stop thinking about that white bike. So on the way out, I asked the salesperson what he knew about that police bike parked outside. As he was telling me the history of the bike, all I could think about was that if I were to buy this bike, how would I learn to ride it. How would I get it home? As the salesman kept talking, I be-came more and more interested. He told me that someone from the Waukegan area had wanted it and had it shipped from Philadelphia. That person, upon seeing the bike, decided he no longer wanted it. Lakeshore wanted $5500 for it. I wanted it. I offered $5000.

I whipped out my credit card. I didn’t think there would be another chance. After the purchase was made, I checked out the saddlebags contents. On one side I found the police siren and linkage. In the other I found the pursuit lamps. Wow! What a bonus!! I made arrangements to pick it up the next day. I had bought a Harley-Davidson racing van from Scotty Parker a few years back. So I loaded up my new bike. Tied it down and drove it home. I drove it around in the van for a couple of weeks. Showed it off to my friends. Then getting up the nerve, I decided it was time to teach myself how to ride the beast. So in my neighborhood I did a lot of practicing. Killed it a lot. Finally getting good at it.

Having the title in hand, I saw that there were two names on the old title. I called directory assistance and got some phone numbers. I called and learned that these two guys were brokers who traveled up and down the east coast buy-ing police bikes at different auctions. So now I knew how lucky I was here in the Midwest to get this bike. I’ve had the siren with the bike for years now

but did not know how to hook it up. I started hanging around with Badgers Rich and Tom Hinderholtz. They had a Badger friend named Panhead Rick who had a si-ren on his bike. I thought I’d check out how his siren was mounted. Then I could figure out how to mount mine. After several tries to check out Pan-head Rick’s bike, and being told I had just missed him, I got the chance at one of Tom’s parties. I took pictures of Panhead Rick’s siren and how it was mounted. I raced home, got mine hooked up and rode back to the party. As I pulled into Tom’s siren blaring, Rick was asking the guys there who was

riding his bike! One of the reasons I joined the Badgers is because of this bike. I appreciate the camaraderie, the sharing of stories, the sharing of expertise, the club events and the fun.

The 6th Annual Country Canter is on!

Well sort of. Let me start from the beginning. In 2011, I was contacted by the Menomonee Falls Historical Society about displaying a vintage motorcycle at the annual Old Falls Village Days event which is held at my great-grandmother, Emma Davidson’s old prop-erty. She and my great-grandfather, Walter, were living on Lake Drive in Milwaukee and wanted a place in the country to get away and relax (yes The Falls was the country back then).

As it turns out, Walter would practically never go there as he was quite busy running the Motor Company, but Emma would use the place on a regular basis. She would throw parties there and play lots of cards with her girl friends. After they had both passed,

the property was left to the city of Menomonee Falls and Old Falls Vil-lage Days is their annual celebration of history.

Well I thought it was a cool idea to bring a bike and then thought it would be much cooler to bring lots of old bikes! So at the next Bad-ger meeting I brought up the idea and the Country Canter was born. It has been fun every year, even though the last two have been quite wet. Everyone always seems to enjoy the place and even in the rain we all got a kick out of taking shelter in the old barn and swilling a few brews, just like my great-grandfather did back in the day!

This brings us to today. I am happy to say the Canter is joining with the Brewtown Rumble as an official pre-party event. With this we (the Rumble committee) have decided to re-brand the event a bit to make it a better fit with the weekend of Brewtown fun. The action will start Friday night at Nick’s Anvil Inn, then Saturday at Old Falls Village until the after-noon when we will have a group ride to the evening party (to be announced). This all just leads up to the Rumble on Sunday.

What a weekend!

Can’t wait. All in all, the details are coming and hope everyone can make it. A new name, a new band and new activities are all in the works for the Canter. As always, every dime of profit from the pre-event and the Rumble will go to worthy causes.

See everyone soon, Your VP, Jon Badgers at first country Canter in 2012
