e T here is a lot going on around

the Bowers as we approach summer and begin planning for the fall. Personally, I am very excited about our African Twilight: Vanishing Rituals & Ceremonies exhibition

with its opening weekend starting July 6 with our exclusive Member Preview event. Many of you may know Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher—they have published roughly 16 books over the past 38 years and are two of the most iconic female explorers in the world today. If you can’t come on the opening night, plan on making their lecture on Saturday, July 7. They are amazing. This exhibit will be accompanied by a book of the same name that is almost 800 pages long and published in two volumes. Unfortunately, the book won’t be released until late October, but they will be back at the Bowers for the book launch. If you want to look further into the future, we are also excited about our upcoming September 23 opening of Knights in Armor: Selections from the

Stibbert Museum, Florence, Italy. This will be one of the most amazing exhibitions of armor that you will ever see. We are opening the exhibit with an elegant Candlelight Dinner honoring Frank DeSantis, pioneer boardmember and enthusiastic supporter of all things Italian. Starting with our Knights exhibition, we will be changing the format of our Member Preview events. We will begin the evening with a Fellows Reception at 5 PM, followed by a members-only lecture in the Kershaw Auditorium from 6–7 PM, and then an exhibit celebration and viewing from 7–9 PM. It will make for a much fuller evening for everyone and, of course, the restaurant Tangata will be open for a fantastic dinner. Finally, I am very pleased to announce that we have just hired Louanne Champagne-Brazil as our Chief Development and Marketing Officer. Louanne takes up her new duties on July 10 and will be in charge of all areas of development and marketing, including our Membership Program. I think you will be seeing and hearing a lot more from Louanne in the not too distant future.

ADMIRALTY ISLANDS FEAST BOWL

This recently acquired gargantuan feast bowl from Papua New Guinea’s Admiralty Islands is

exceptionally uncommon, previously represented only in the Oceanic Collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a handful of others. But as rare as it might be, its construction is even unlikelier. Despite measuring almost five feet from one end of the handles to the other, everything except for the bowl’s signature handles is made from a single fire-hollowed piece of wood and hand carved with volcanic glass. Due to its size, even the usage of this bowl was exclusive. It would have been reserved for special feasts occurring at bride price gatherings, initiation ceremonies, and funerals where it could contain great supplies of staple foods like

taro and sweet potatoes, liquids such as soups made from sago and pork broth, or even coconut oil. Look forward to seeing this grand bowl on display in Spirits and Headhunters: Arts of the Pacific Islands in the coming weeks!

CONTINUING EXHIBITIONS

California Bounty: Image and Identity, 1850–1930 This exhibition brings together many of the museum’s most cherished paintings and a small selection of works illustrating California as a continued place of possibility. Viewers will take a journey through California’s visual history—a history shaped by a unique mixture of Mexican and Anglo traditions, as well as the state’s position on the Pacific Rim.

“In the last decade we realized more than ever that if we lowered our cameras from our eyes the scene in front of us would be gone forever. The light is changing and the sun is low in the sky on Africa’s traditional ceremonies.”

–Photographers Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher

African Twilight: Vanishing Rituals & Ceremonies is a celebration of Africa’s artistry and boundless creativity as captured by renowned photojournalists Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher.

The Bowers’ presentation marks the world premiere of this stunning exhibition, with photographs and film covering the last 15 years of Beckwith and Fisher’s work in over 45 African countries. Their images capture the continent’s vast cultural diversity while documenting profound moments of commonality in the human life cycle, including unique initiation ceremonies, colorful courtship rituals, the splendor of power in the Royal Kingdoms, and intimate healing practices for the living and the dead.

JOIN THE DOCENT GUILDLaugh, Teach, and Explore in a Vibrant Setting

Contribute to an adult or child’s experience of art, history, and world cultures as a volunteer docent at the historic Bowers Museum. Docents provide guided tours of permanent galleries and special exhibitions to diverse audiences, while gaining intimate knowledge of the museum and its collections.

Bowers docents come from all backgrounds and age groups. As a docent, you will enjoy many social and

professional benefits. Best of all, you will have fun sharing your knowledge with adults, families, and school children as part of a docent team.

No docent experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and share. Training is provided in a small class setting by an experienced team. Classes are conducted on either varied weekday mornings or weekend mornings over the course of the year.

Attend the upcoming Open House and Information Briefing

Wednesday, July 2512 – 2:30 PM
