The $104 million project of renovations, additions to the current structure and the Schwarzman Center for Science and Technol-ogy got underway with the Official Groundbreaking Ceremony held November 2, 2018. The Schwarzman Center is due to open in 2020. The addition of an auxiliary gym, a new cafeteria, a

In September 2018 the Abington Board of School Directors appointed Dr. Jeffrey S. Fecher as Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Fecher has served the school district since 2007, first as Principal of Abington High School and then as Assistant Superintendent to Dr. Amy Sichel who retired fol-lowing a 42 year career in education.

Change of address?LET US KNOW...

Where are they now?Raised in Glenside, Pennsylvania, Madeleine got her start in politics around the dinner table with her five older brothers and one older sister. At age 18 she won election to serve as a local committee-person.

Madeleine completed her undergraduate studies at La Salle University in Philadelphia, and earned her law degree at Delaware Law School of Widener University. She returned home, practicing law in a small Philadelphia firm and with the Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association and eventually serving as executive director. Madeleine then opened a small, three-woman law practice in Glenside.

In 2011, Madeleine ran for and served as Abington Township commissioner, before winning a special election to the Pennsylvania State House in 2012.

During her six-and-a-half years in Harrisburg, May of 2012 until November 2018, Madeleine was an outspoken champion of public education, healthcare access, environmental protection, equal rights, eth-ics, criminal justice reform, combating addiction and ending gun violence. Following the Sandy Hook

shooting, Madeleine founded and served as Co-Chair of the PA SAFE Caucus — an active coalition of legislators and advocates dedicated to ending gun violence.

Throughout her career in the Legislature, Madeleine also worked closely with local officials to bring home millions of dollars in infrastructure projects that promote safer, greener, more livable communities. And with her extraordinary coworkers, they served tens of thousands of constituents with problems big and small.

Madeleine’s concern for equality — and a broader desire to expand her public service — eventually inspired her run for Congress. In 2018, Pennsylvania had 18 Congressional seats — and 0 women. Along with a cadre of other women from across the state, Madeleine set out to change that. She ran for the Fourth Congressional District seat and won.

In Congress, Madeleine remains focused on decency and the common good; that means working hard to address issues that affect Americans deeply and making smart, humane policy choices. It also means working to ensure that government functions smoothly and delivers the services constituents need.

Madeleine is a lifelong parishioner of St. Luke the Evangelist Church in Glenside, and has served as a board member for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. She and her husband PJ Cunnane live in Jenkintown, Abington Township, and have three grown sons — Patrick, Harry and Alex, — two daughters-in-law — Stephanie and Juliet — and one adorable 7-year-old granddaughter, Aubrey.

SportsBASKETBALLThe highlight of the winter sports season was the outstanding performances of both the boys and girls basketball teams. The boys became the suburban I champions by defeating a strong Coatesville team 74-71 behind a 38 point explosion by top Villanova recruit, senior Eric Dixon. The team moved on to the States and defeated Cumberland in round one 89-44. In the second round the team was ousted 55-51 by a Pennridge team that they had beaten three times during the season. Pennridge went on to lose in the State final game. The team was led by Dixon and fellow senior, Lucas Monroe, a recruit of the University of Pennsylvania. The upset spoiled a season that saw Abington hav-ing a terrific record of 26-2 under coach, Charles Grasty ’90.

Former Abington Star, Amir Hinton, from the 2015 District I championship team, led the country in scoring with a 29.4 point average for Division II for Shaw Univer-sity of North Carolina. He intends to de-clare for the NBA draft. Former Abington star, Senior Anthony Lee, holds school records at Kutztown University in 3-point-ers made, points in a season (802), and was second in team history with 2,292 career points.

Coach Dan Marsh led the girls basketball team to a 24-4 record and they qualified for the States. In the first round, Abington defeated Parkland 56-24. They were led by seniors, Kassandra Brown (a Univer-sity of Rhode island recruit), and Camryn Lexow. The girls beat Cumberland Valley in the second round 52-48 scoring with 17 seconds left to win the game. Abington then lost to Upper Dublin in the quarter-finals 41-31 despite 20 points from Brown to close out the season.

SOCCER

Both the boys and girls soccer teams had very successful seasons. Coach Randy Garber ‘71 led the boys to a 19 and 2 record. In the district I finals the team lost to Central Bucks West 2-1, but still advanced to the State playoffs. In the first two rounds, Abington beat Unionville 3-2, and Emmaus 4-0. In the third round they lost to Seneca Valley 1-0 eliminating them. Sean Touey led the team in scor-ing and was selected as a forward on the All-State team.

The girls team, coached by Rick Tom-kins ’72, won the Suburban I American conference beating 2017 state finalist,

Neshaminy. They advanced to the district I playoffs, but lost Academy Park.

Two-sport athlete, Camryn Lexow, led the team with 22 goals and will play for the University of Virginia next season.

FOOTBALLThe football team ended with a 4-6 record with the highlight being a victory over Cheltenham.

SWIMMINGSenior Matt Bonnell won a silver medal at the State championships in the 500 yard freestyle.

Basketball stars Kassandra Brown and Eric Dixon

Dr. James Melchor became the Assistant Superintendent under Dr. Fecher in 2018 after having been the Assistant Director of Curriculum at Abington High School since 2009. During this time, he chaired or co-chaired numerous committees including one currently reviewing the secondary program for reconfigured grade spans.

Dr Melchor attended the University of Pennsylvania earning his Bachelor’s Degree. He went on to obtain Master of Science Degrees in Educational Leadership and Educational Technology from Wilkes University. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the University of Pennsylvania. He then received his Doctor of Educa-tional Leadership from Penn.

Before coming to Abington, he was a Social Studies and Science teacher in the Dela-ware Valley School District in Milford, PA. His next position was as a middle school assistant principal and then as an elementary school principal in the Owen J. Roberts School District. He brings experience at all grade levels to his new position. The Alumni wishes him much success.Dr. James Melchor

AHS Loses Two Long-Time Teachers

QUIZ: Who is John McGoldrick???

Jane Kesson, former Abington District music teacher and choir director, passed away in 2017 at the age of 90. In November, the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote that the Philadelphia Orchestra disclosed that in her will she left $4.7 million dollars to the Orchestra. The Orchestra named its Free Teacher Work-shop Series in her name. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in piano and Master’s in Composition at the University of Pennsylvania. Ms. Kesson taught K -12 and was said to have a magnetic personality.

Dorothy Lemmert led the Business Education Department and taught for 33 years at Abington High School. She also had weekly Bible classes at the school. Ms. Lemmert passed away at the age of 94 in August of 2018. She received her Masters in Educa-tion from Temple University.

In, 1969, John McGoldrick, took a temporary custodial summer job with the Abington School District.

The students named him “Woody” because he wore thick framed glasses like a popular comedian at the time, Woody Allen. He stayed for over fifty years.

John spent much of his free time attending most of the sporting events at Abington. His favorites were the football and basket-ball games, where he could be seen wear-ing a maroon shirt with the big A. He also enjoyed the swim meets, and volleyball and wrestling matches. John was and still is, Abington’s Biggest Fan. In honor of his fifty plus years of dedication, Woody was honored recently with a banner, which will be hung in the high school gym.

Woody says he loves the school and the students—for its’ tight knit, friendly commu-nity. In his spare time he’s active in supporting the Abington Township Republican Organization. A longtime Glenside resident, Woody’s mark on AHS is as memorable as anyone – ever!

positions during his 25 years in Abington. His most recent assign-ment was that of Assistant Director of Curriculum. Dr.Lentz has departed from Abington to assume the duties of Superintendent of Schools of the New Hope- Solebury School District. As of this reporting the position of Director of Curriculum has not been filled. Dr. Hagan-Bacon has been asked to fill the role on a temporary basis until a replacement is appointed.

The loss of these three individuals plus a number of staff and support personnel retirement leaves behind huge shoes to be filled by those who follow. Best of All Things to You All!

Hope to see many of you at the 50+ Luncheon, October 11, 2019, at the Old York Road Country Club!

National ChampionsAbington High School’s Chess Team won the 2019 U. S. Chess Federation’s National High School Championship in Illinois. Abington’s English teacher, Shawn Simmons, coaches the team, and had played chess at Lincoln High School, his alma mater. Na-thaniel O, Albert Hatton, and Ethan Weilheimer (who also is the starting goal-keeper on the Lacrosse team).
