South High Debate team stars are coaches choice as best in nation Following back to back state championships in policy debate, Clara Conry and Gabe Chang-Deutsch were recognized by coaches as the number one team in the country.

High School debate of today is a fast paced and fierce competition, with the added challenge of debating online during the pandemic from computers in different locations. Students need to communicate with their partners and navigate the online debate process all at the same time. Getting back to in-person debating in the future will be a big plus for everyone.

In the past, top ranking teams consisted primarily of private or charter high schools. With the support of the Minnesota Urban Debate League, run by Augsburg University, and a generous South alum benefactor, Dave Scheffman '66, the playing field has been leveled. In 2016 another urban public high school, Highland Park, won the nationals giving inspiration to the South High team.

The theme for this season’s competition was criminal justice reform. In an interview with KARE 11 news Conry said, "It feels a little more personal. Like, we've kind of seen a lot of it play out in local politics, so we can imagine what it would look like on a

Cancel, cancel, cancel. That is what we have heard most in 2020 and, so far, in 2021. For students at South, as well as other schools, there has been no in person social activities, musical performances, theater productions, or many sport activities. Graduation events in 2020 needed to be drastically changed. For the Foundation, it has meant no Alumni Luncheons, Pancake Breakfasts, or Golf Tournament. BUT we are hanging in there. Students are still learning online. Graduation will still happen in 2021 – but probably again modified. The Foundation continues to help enhance the education of the students at South – although with less funds because fundraisers were cancelled.

But there may be a light at the end of the tunnel. Some sport activities have been occurring. In person classes will begin on April 12, though students have the option to continue with distance learning for the remainder of the year. I think both students and staff are anxious to get back to some sort of normalcy. A time for students, teachers and staff to reconnect with each other but a challenge for teachers to teach in person and online.

We want to thank all those people who provided funds to the South Emergency

Teachers come up with creative ways for students to learnDistance learning can be a challenge for teachers and students. Sometimes teachers need to ‘think outside the box’ to come up with creative ways for students to learn. Two teachers, one science and the ceramics class, asked the Foundation for some help to prepare and pay for items to develop student work kits.

The science field kits included magnifying lens, water sample bottles, pH strips, field guides as well as other items (pictured at right). Some Foundation members collated the items off-site as we are not permitted to be in the South High building.

national scale, or what different policies people might want to use.”

"We both live in south Minneapolis, we were really close to George Floyd square and a lot of the debates about police reform in Minneapolis are very polarized. In debate, you have to argue both sides of an issue. You have to support and negate the issue and one thing that debate has helped me see is how it's more than just one correct way of going about police reform. There's multiple avenues,” shared Chang-Deutsch with Kent Erdahl of KARE 11. To see students actively debating, go to the website: southhighfoundation.org.

The Ceramic Kits (shown at left) included clay and various modeling tools and brushes. Because of the weight of the clay, Ceramic’s teacher and South alum, David Olson ’92, decided to assemble the kits himself at South. He also arranged for students to pick up the kits at South. About 160 ceramic kits were assembled.

Because South was not available for us to have a place to assemble the science kits, we especially want to thank another South alum, Courtney Welton Norgaard ’01, owner of Local Roots

Restaurant at 817 East 66th Street in Richfield, who provided us with space to assemble the kits in an open section of her restaurant. Stop in for a bite to eat and thank her for helping the Foundation and South students!

To read an article about ceramics teacher David Olson and the process he’s been implementing during distance learning please go to page 7. These are a couple of new methods of educating our South High students during this unusual time.

Congratulations to Conry and Chang-Deutsch and the South High debaters as they continue their journey in the national debate!

Also of note, senior Isabel Kleckner was named the UMBrooks Varsity Debate Champ this past fall, representing South High! Kudos to Urban Debate and to Coach Oskar Tauringtraxler.

Relief Fund. Your donation helped students and their families through a difficult time (although the need has not gone away). And thank you to all those who donated directly to the Foundation to allow us to keep providing funds for programs at South.

This has been a time of reflection. We see what is really important in our lives; our

families, friends and our connections and how much we miss those connections.

The students at South are our future. You, through the Foundation, are investing in their future as well as our future.

In Honor Of

Making connections to heal a communitySouth High 2016 graduate, Isak Douah returned home to Minneapolis last summer and volunteered at the intersection where George Floyd died. Currently a fashion design student at the University of Amsterdam, Douah spent a lot of time doing work as a youth organizer. “It was just something that I feel like came kind of naturally,” Douah told South High’s reporting team for an interview broadcast on MPR news.

Douah was motivated to come back home after watching the Instagram Live videos as everything was burning very near his own South Minneapolis neighborhood. He found his place by protecting the George Floyd memorial intersection by working security and as a first responder.

Working with his father, Douah also developed a program to help connect people with mental health care. “I want the community to have the means to protect themselves by any means necessary, and I also want them to have the means to protect their minds,” he told South High interviewer Olivia Sather. “Douah described the app as ‘Uber Eats for therapy.’ Users can book a Black therapist to come to them. ‘I think there’s a place in mental health for everybody.’”

Douah returned to Amsterdam, but continues to be involved in his Minneapolis community.

Editor’s note: In an effort to engage neighborhood youth in telling their community’s story Minnesota Public Radio partnered with South High students, Hamda Abdi, Helene Francis, Atticus Keezer-Dow and Olivia Sather, to look at how the community transformed the site of George Floyd’s killing and the people behind the transformation. They are students of the documentary radio and podcasting class in the Voices Program at South High taught by Delainia Haug and Laura Lanik. For the complete podcast please visit Minneapolis Public Radio at mprnews.org and search for “Like Uber Eats for Therapy.”

Annual Report CorrectionThe South High Foundation Annual Reports were sent out in early March to all those making donations during the 2019 and 2020 fiscal years. There was a technical error which resulted in a duplication of names at the end of the donor list and omitted a number of contributors for 2020. We are including the omitted list from page 14 of the annual report to remedy this error. Please accept our sincere apologies.

The Foundation thanks all our generous contributors who help make the Foundation and South High School a continued success.

Congratulations go to South High’s Jade Hill for becoming the #2 Minneapolis City all-time career point leader (boys or girls) with 2,765 points and counting! The 35 points she gained in play against Southwest during the first week in March far exceeded points needed to surpass sister Morgan as the second leading scorer in basketball conference history.

South Athletic Director Amy Cardarelle says, “It’s impressive that the top three MPS conference scoring leaders are all female, all South graduates, and siblings!”

Jade’s sister Taylor, a 2009 South High graduate who went on to play professional basketball, was inducted into the South High Foundation Wall of Honor in 2016.

Delivering class instruction for ceramics is such a daunting undertaking that South High is the only MPS school offering this art class! Without it, students couldn’t produce masterpieces like these during the pandemic. All owed to the dedication of teacher David Olson, who worked out a contactless system, in which students pick up materials at school, and return to drop off finished work to be fired. Mr. Olson explained how it works, “Students pick up a clay kit that has about 6 pounds of clay, a small container of joining slip, a small container of black slip, 3 different sculpting tools, a clay sponge, and a paint brush all assembled by me at South” (photo of supplies pictured on page 2).

Students set up home studios augmented with a few easy to find other tools, like a butter knife, fork, spoon, old credit card (as a makeshift rib), etc. Students can come back any school day and pick up extra clay. “When projects are ready to be fired, they just drop them off at the ceramics shelves, and I glaze and fire them at South, and put them out for pick up when they are finished. The South High Foundation generously funded the clay kits for the second semester.”

Olson has been doing live instructional demos using a document camera during synchronous class sessions, and then students get plenty of work time to unplug from their device and focus on their hands and the clay to make their art at home. The demos are available anytime on the Google Class page. A variety of online platforms are used for warm ups and group discussion, such as Flipgrid, Jamboards, virtual museum tours, and one-on-one Google meets. Students turn in their work by creating a Google slide show telling the story of their artistic process from start to finish with reflective comments. Thank you to teachers like David Olson who are going above and beyond during distance learning to motivate students.

Adding up the points for the Hill family

Dedicated ceramics teacher finds a way

South High’s Bezh Butler, All Nations Coordinator, language and culture teacher and the best Lacrosse stick maker around, is featured in Lax All Stars! This legend in our midst has made a big contribution to Great Lakes style lacrosse.

Originally from the Lac Courte Oreilles reservation in Wisconsin, Bezh came to Minneapolis for the Ojibwe language and culture programs offered. He taught at the Division of Indian Work, the Bdote Learning Center and now at South.

During one of the student enrichment programs he was introduced to Lacrosse, and at another student cultural event he learned more about crafting the Lacrosse sticks. Practice and more practice has made him a household name in the Great Lakes Lacrosse world.

For Behz, his work is an important part of cultural revitalization. “I’m going to try to bring back everything I can, because everything is just like a piece of the puzzle of everything our ancestors wanted us to be,” he said in the interview with Lax All Stars. “Everything they did, they did because it was beneficial to the community.”

Changes in personnel in the Foundation officeTom Klein has been our Operations Manager for nearly 6 years. Under his guidance the office has been organized and running like a top. But, alas, he has decided that it is time to move on to other adventures. He is staying on until we can find his replacement (he is hoping that will happen in the next 2-3 months). He will be available to the new person to help ease them into the position and give time to adjust to the many volunteers. Tom has done a remarkable job for the Foundation. He will be missed!

Jerry Herby has been our data entry specialist (and I mean specialist!) for about 8 years. He is also planning on cutting back and we are looking for someone who is interested in a part-time data entry position. Are you interested? You can get more information about this position by contacting [email protected]. Jerry has cleaned up, organized and expanded our database. He will be sticking around until fall.

Faces leading the class of 2021South High senior class officers have had a challenging year but manage to keep up the school spirit. Pictured from the left: President, Bezawit Abate; Vice President, Cassandra Garcia Rios; Secretary, Zigi Kaiser; Treasurer,

Elena Nava. You might remember one familiar face, Zigi Kaiser. Secretary Kaiser and South High teacher, Chris Stinson, were guests at the Fall All Alumni Luncheon in 2019. They gave a presentation and answered questions about the South High debate team.

A chance to honor and to rememberHave you ever considered a donation to the Foundation in memory of someone or in honor of someone? Perhaps a special relative or a teacher that meant a lot to you. You can indicate such a tribute on the form above. We recently received a donation from a donor who gave $10 for each year since he graduated from South!

Theater and dance fundraiser continued from page 1

This fundraiser supports the after-school program which is hosting area artists to work with South High students. In February, students worked with May Lee-Yang, a Hmong American playwright, poet, prose writer, performance artist and community activist. In March, students will meet Nora Montañez, an Afro-descendent Indigenous Peruvian actress, singer, educator and playwright, for a creative writing workshop. This fundraiser also supports the upcoming student directed virtual play, “Eurydice” by Sarah Ruhl, which retells the myth of Orpheus from the perspective of his wife, Eurydice.

Performance dates will be announced in the Tiger Pride Newsletter, under the Parents column on the South High website: www.south.mpls.k12.mn.us

How do you do Swing Night, a pet show and talent show in January 2021South High has been doing its best to plan some fun events this January. Student ambassadors organized a pet show and talent show that welcomed all students via a Google Meet.

The music department also used the internet to celebrate. Although sad that they couldn't gather for Swing Night this year, teachers: Nancy Nair, Dance; Sophia Butler, Jazz II; and Tharon Knowlton, Jazz I, were so happy to have a chance to keep the tradition going. Students shared their thoughts and performance videos which can be viewed online through the link below. Special thanks to Roo Case for post production, and all the students who put in extra time during distance learning to make this special!

Golf tourney in it’s 25th year, come and celebrateThe South High Foundation is having its 25th Jim Bloom/Golf Tournament on Friday, September 17th, 2021 at the Crystal Lake Golf Club in Lakeville, MN.

Our committee is reaching out to graduation classes, local businesses and individuals for golfers, hole sponsorship, volunteers and prize donors who have continued to make the tournament a fundraising success on behalf of the Foundation. To date we have raised over $300,000 on behalf of the Foundation with this annual golf event.

The cost will be $130.00 per person which includes a box lunch, range balls, golf cart, field/team events prizes, a great dinner and time to reminisce with friends. We also offer dinner only for any non-golfers at a cost of $28.00 per person. So be sure to bring your spouse (if not already golfing), significant other, a friend or alumni who would like to join in the fun and support a great cause.

Golf hole sponsorships are noted at three levels. Platinum—$1,000 (includes golf for four), Gold—$500 (includes golf for two) and Silver—$150. All golf hole sponsors receive signage, recognition of them at the dinner that evening as well as publishing their names in the Foundation newsletter, which is distributed to over 13,000 alumni and friends.

Please contact me, the Foundation office, or anyone on the committee for more information. It’s a great way to start your class reunion weekend by participating in the golf tournament. Go Tigers!
