he vast array oftruck models onthe market can

make finding theperfect vehicle adaunting task. Beforevisiting a dealership, you've got to askyourself a fewquestions.

What kind of enginedo you want? Should thetruck have a cab thatcomfortably seats fourpeople? What kind ofmaterials will you behauling? Are youlooking for a luxuryvehicle, or would youprefer something thatsimply suits hard labor?Should the bed of thetruck be long, wide, orshort?

Ultimately, these arequestions that a buyerabsolutely mustconsider before he evenenters a truckdealership. And,fortunately for truckbuyers, mostdealerships will be ableto deliver a truck thatmeets your exactspecifications — withthe perfect combinationof engine, cabin and bedto do the jobs you havein mind.

Other factors shouldalso come to mind whenthinking about what tolook for in a new truck.First, the truck shouldbe comfortable to drive.Second, you should feelcomfortable driving thevehicle. Third, youshould love the look ofthe truck. Fourth, andmost important, thetruck should bemanufactured by a safeand reliable companythat offers its buyers agood warranty.

Here's a closer look atwhat to look for in a newtruck:

ENGINESThe engine is the heart

of your truck, and it'sthe choice that will mostdramatically affect theperformance, capabilityand personality of thetruck you buy.

There are a lot moreengine choice thanthere are trucks, and it'snot as simple aschoosing between V6and V8 models.

If you're looking forefficiency, a V6 engine isyour best bet because itoffers basicperformance along withgood gas mileage, all fora low price. Most full-size and all mid-sizepickups are availablewith a V6. You could alsoconsider one of GeneralMotors' hybrid pickups, like the GMC SierraHybrid, which addselectric motors that give

you the grunt of a V8with the efficiency of amuch smaller engine.

The most populartype of truck engine isthe traditional gasolineV8, and each brand willusually offer severaloptions in V8 power. Ifpossible, you shoulddrive a truck with eachof the different enginesto compare them oneafter another. Each V8will feel and sounddramatically different,so you need to pick onethat matches yourpersonal preferences.Note how each V8accelerates, both from astanding stop and atpassing speeds on thehighway.

Finally, you've got toweigh whether youwant a diesel engine.Today's diesels arequieter and morerefined than everbefore, but they're still alittle louder and roughersounding thanconventional gas

engines. They've got alot of advantages, though, including theability to generate lotsof torque for towing anda better reputation forlongevity. A diesel isoften the mostexpensive enginechoice, but it also offersgreat capability and abetter resale value.

CABINDifferent brands use

different buzzwords todescribe their cabs, butthey can generally fallinto three categories:Regular cabs, with twodoors and seating forthree, are the mostaffordable models thatoffer the least interiorspace.

The next step up is acabin with a small backseat. It will usually havetwo full-size doors infront and a couple ofsmaller, often rear-opening doors in backto access the back seat.

The biggest and mostexpensive choice is atrue four-door truck, which has full-size frontand back seats. Whilethe initial cost will bemore, many people likethis type of truckbecause it's like buyingtwo vehicles in one: abig SUV for the family, and a pickup truck fordoing hard work.

BEDTruck beds come in all

shapes and sizes, so it'simportant to pick onethat meets therequirements of the jobyou're doing. If youfrequently haul full-size,4-by-8-foot sheets ofdrywall or plywood, then a long bed may beyour only option. If youuse it for haulingsmaller things, like bagsof concrete orlandscaping materials, then a short bed maysuffice.

Not only does the bed

determine what you cancarry, but it alsochanges how the trucklooks and drives. Longbeds look more likework trucks, while shortand medium lengthslook sportier. And whilelong beds are the bestfor hauling bulky cargo, they're the hardest to fitinto a parking lot.

LUXURIESThere was a time

when pickups were allabout work, but today'strucks can now beoutfitted like luxurycars.

The GMC Denali lineis a great example. InDenali trim, the Sierracomes with leatherseats and all sorts ofelectronic gadgets thatmake it feel more like aCadillac than a GMC.Other brands offersimilar luxury packages, most notably Ford withits upscale Lariat trim.

If you really want aluxury truck, look foravailable features like anavigation system, special leather trim, andperhaps even a built-inDVD player for the backseat.

Overall, many truckmakers offer consumersstandard features thatare available in mosttruck models. Knowingwhat additional featuresyou want in a truck ismost important whenit's time to shop.

In the end, the perfecttruck can be found —one that matches yourlifestyle as much as yourneed to do a job.

ext to buying ahome, a car is oneof the biggest

purchases you willmake in your lifetime.Considering how it'ssuch a big investment— and one that's soimportant to your day-to-day life — it'simportant to make sureyour car will last as longas possible.

Keeping your vehicle'sservice current is is thebest way to do that.

For starters, it willsave you a lot of moneyover time. These dayseveryone is looking forways to save, and payingattention to the needsof your car is one way todo it.

Getting regular oilchanges, rotating tires, and occasional tune-ups are all part ofmaintaining a car. Whileit's true that an oilchange can cost youanywhere between $10and $50, having thisdone every 3,000-5,000miles will keep your carrunning better. In thelong run, this saves a lotof money because itkeeps your enginerunning longer andstronger.

Without keeping upwith the basic service, bigger problems canarise that will cost muchmore than the price of afew oil changes, tirerotations or tune-ups.

Another reason to stayon top of your car'sservice is that a well-maintained car will run

more efficiently. Thiswill allow your engine torun smoother andrequire fewer trips tothe gas station to fill up,which in turn will saveyou money.

In addition, maintaining your carand servicing itregularly will keep yousafer. Regularlychecking your tirepressure is importantfor many reasons. Cartires with too low ofpressure can wear thetires out and cause thetread to be ruined. Tiresthat have too muchpressure have the risk ofpotential blowouts, which can be dangerousand even fatal.

Likewise, brakesshould be checked once

or twice a year to makesure they are workingproperly, or checked ifyou notice anythingunusual about them, such as squealing, grinding, or the need topush on the brakesharder than normal.Obviously, not havingproperly working brakeson your car isdangerous.

Furthermore, regularlyservicing your car willmake it worth more if orwhen you decide to sellit or trade it in. By doingsimple tasks likekeeping the inside of thecar clean and washing itfrequently, you will keepyour car looking nicerand improve its value.Cleaning the underside

of your car is important, especially during thewinter months in coldclimates, to preventsnow and sludge fromcorroding the parts.

A car that has beenregularly serviced, maintained, and looksgreat on the inside andoutside will get youmore money when youdecide to sell it. A fewpeople even get moremoney for their car thanthey originally paid forit, just because theyhave taken such goodcare of it.

How do you knowwhen it's time to do themaintenance? If you stillhave your car's owner'smanual, it will contain atreasure trove ofinformation about not

only when themaintenance isrequired, but also whattypes of fluids your caris designed to use. Youshould do your best tofollow the instructionsprecisely because it willkeep your car runningproperly. Failing tofollow the instructionscould even void your

car's warranty.If you don't have the

owner's manual — orwould be morecomfortable having aprofessional look it over— then you could getthe advice from areputable automechanic. Theseprofessionals, whetherat car dealerships orindependent repairshops, will be able tolook up informationabout your car andexamine it to see whatkind of maintenanceyou need.

Buying a car is part ofthe American dream. It's a big purchase thatshould not be takenlightly. Maintaining andservicing your carregularly is imperativeand necessary to keepyour car in tip-topshape. Doing so willsave you money, keepyou safer, and make itworth more in the longrun.

Take pride in your carkeep its service current. It will only help you inthe long run.
