CAREER FAIR SUCCESSTICIPANTSPREPARATION IS THE KEYTICIPANTSCAREER FAIRS are an excellent opportunity to make some

lasting connections with potential employers. Employers attend our career fairs to find talent to fill their internships, part-time jobs and full-time opportunities. Employers seek talent at Cal Poly Pomona because our students understand how to apply the theory and concepts learned in their respective majors in everyday work. Our students are also adept at working successfully in teams, and often come with prior work experience, having established a strong work ethic. TO bE SuCCESSFuL AT THE CAREER FAIR, HERE ARE A FEw POINTERS TO FOLLOw:

Create a Twenty Second Introduction. It’s a quick and simple tool to help market yourself. It conveys a message that introduces your unique skills, qualifications, and what you have to offer. It should be brief and intriguing enough so that the employer wants to hear more. Here’s a sample:

Make Your First Impression! Be courteous, enthusiastic and confident. First impressions are important. Showing genuine and realistic interest in the company will make a good impression. Overconfidence and interest only in the best dollar offer will create a negative impression. Business casual attire is recommended (or professional attire if you prefer).

“Hi (shaking hands), my name is Tracy Public (pause briefly for the other person to return their introduction).“OK, now the clock is ticking. You have twenty seconds...“I will receive my BS in Accounting in June from Cal Poly Pomona and have been working in the accounting field for more than two years, doing both general accounting and auditing. This past summer I worked for the New York office of Ernst & Young in an Auditor Internship. I›m currently seeking an auditor position, and I’m interested to know what opportunities your company has.”

Research the Companies! Review company websites and familiarize yourself with the companies so that you will be able to ask intelligent, well thought-out questions at the Career Fair. Employers will appreciate you more for this effort.

Prioritize your Time! Review the participant list, select the companies you are most interested in learning more about and visit them first. Keep Your Options Open! Talk with all the recruiters who might be interested in your major, background and goals. Keep in mind that companies will hire a myriad of employees. A single company may have openings in everything from finance to sales to graphic design! Don’t forget to explore the lesser-known companies and keep an open mind. Questions! Questions! Questions! Use this opportunity to increase your knowledge of the company and its job options, the qualities and skills the recruiter is looking for in a good candidate, advancement and promotion paths, and training programs. Also ask about part-time positions and internships. bring Your Resume! Remember that your resume is a marketing tool that describes you. Cover basics such as education, skills, work experience and accomplishments that are relevant to the industry, company, or positions of interest. Be sure to include your computer and language skills. Establish Contact! If you find companies of interest, be sure to collect business cards, appropriate information, and handouts. You may also send a “thank-you” letter to the recruiter with whom you spoke with. A letter is a good way to jog their memory of you and to reemphasize your enthusiasm and interest in the company. On-Campus Interviews! Many of these companies will hold on-campus interviews. If you are a senior, you may be eligible to sign up for these interviews.

Before stepping into an interview, be sure to practice, practice, practice. A job-seeker going to a job interview without preparing is like an actor per-forming on opening night without rehearsing. To help with the interview process, keep the following ten rules in mind:

1) Keep your answers brief and concise.Unless asked to give more detail, limit your answers to two to three minutes per question. Tape yourself and see how long it takes you to fully answer a question.

2) Include concrete, quantifiable data.Interviewees tend to talk in generalities. Unfortunately, generalities often fail to convince interviewers that the applicant has assets. Include measurable information and provide details about specific accomplishments when discussing your strengths.

3) Repeat your key strengths three times. It’s essential that you comfortably and confidently articulate your strengths. Explain how the strengths relate to the company’s or department’s goals and how they might benefit the potential employer. If you repeat your strengths then they will be remem-bered and—if supported with quantifiable accomplish-ments—they will more likely be believed.

4) Prepare five or more success stories. In preparing for interviews, make a list of your skills and key assets. Then reflect on past jobs and pick out one or two instances when you used those skills suc-cessfully.

5) Put yourself on their team.Ally yourself with the prospective employer by using the employer’s name and products or services. For ex-ample, “As a member of __________, I would carefully analyze the __________ and __________.” Show that

Did you ask questions to get the information you needed? What might you do different-ly next time? Prepare and send a brief thank-you letter. In SummaryBecause of its importance, interviewing requires advance preparation. Only you will be able to positively affect the outcome. You must be able to compete successfully with the competition for the job you want. In order to do that, be certain you have considered the kind of job you want, why you want it and how you qualify for it. You also must face reality: Is the job attainable? In addition, recognize what it is that employers want in their candidates. They want “can do” and “will do” employees. Recognize and use the following factors to your benefit as you develop your sales presentation. In evaluating candidates, employers consider the following:

TEN RULES OF INTERVIEWINGyou are thinking like a member of the team and will fit in with the existing environment. Be careful though not to say anything that would offend or be taken negatively. Your research will help you in this area.

6) Image is often as important as content.What you look like and how you say something are just as important as what you say. Studies have shown that 65 percent of the conveyed message is nonverbal; gestures, physical appearance and attire are highly influential during job interviews.

7) Ask questions.The types of questions you ask and the way you ask them can make a tremendous impression on the interviewer. Good questions require advance preparation. Just as you plan how you would answer an interviewer’s questions, write out specific questions you want to ask. Then look for opportunities to ask them during the interview. Don’t ask about benefits or salary. The interview process is a two-way street whereby you and the interviewer assess each other to determine if there is an appropriate match.

8) Maintain a conversational flow.By consciously maintaining a conversational flow—a dia-logue instead of a monologue—you will be perceived more positively. Use feedback questions at the end of your answers and use body language and voice intonation to create a con-versational interchange between you and the interviewer.

9) Research the company, product lines and competitors.Research will provide information to help you decide wheth-er you’re interested in the company and important data to refer to during the interview.

10) Keep an interview journal.As soon as possible, write a brief summary of what hap-

Key tabs on your BroncoConnection naviga-tion bar:The PROFILE tab contains your personal and academic information. It is important that you complete your profile accurately and update the information when changes occur as this information will be used to qualify you for those positions and On-Campus Inter-views that are open exclusively to pre-des-ignated majors and/or class standing. All information you provide is confidential and used only by the Career Center to better serve you. Employers or parties outside the Career Center have no access to your account. Under “Privacy” you may choose to receive email notifications, as well as, allow your resume to be included in Resume Books provided to employers upon request.

Use the DOCUMENTS tab to store up to a total of 10 documents including resumes, cov-er letters, unofficial transcripts and any other documents you may wish to submit to em-ployers. Please note: documents must first be uploaded here before being submitted to a job posting. Additionally, when storing multiple resumes, be sure to choose a default resume. Should you decide to make your resume avail-able to employers via a Resume Book, your default resume will be the one provided.

Use the JOBS tab to access posted opportuni-ties. A variety of search filters are available to help you locate opportunities by major, posi-tion type, industry and keywords. “Advanced Search” allows you to narrow your search by posting date, location and work authorization. Search agents may be set-up to notify you via email of jobs meeting your search crite-ria. You may also save jobs of interest to your

“Favorites”. The “Job List” will display all jobs matching your search criteria. Click on “Job Title” to view the job description, requirements and application instructions. Under “Application Status” you can select the resume, cover letter and other doc-uments you wish to submit to the em-ployer. Clicking on “Employer” from the “Job List” will take you to the employer’s profile, as well as other available positions with the company. Each listing is accom-panied by a “Type” code: “J” = standard job listing; “P” and “O” refer to On-Cam-pus Interview positions; and “CF” denotes positions for which employers attending an upcoming career fair will be hiring.

Use the EMPLOYERS tab to view all active employers, including their profile, jobs posted and scheduled On-Campus Interviews. You may also save employers of interest to your “Favorites”.

The INTERVIEWS tab tracks your re-quested and scheduled On-Campus Inter-views and provides you with the option of canceling and/or rescheduling interviews as necessary.

SUCCESSFULLYNAVIGATING CAREER FAIRSWhat are employers looking for when selecting candidates? How can students make a positive impression at the job fair? We asked Sarinna Chavez, Manager of Recruiting & Training, Southern Wine and Spirits and Kim Radtke, Recruiter, Panda Restaurant Group, Inc. to share their perspective. Here’s what they had to say: Q: What should students do to prepare for a career fair?A: To get a competitive edge, students should always do research on the compa-nies that they plan to speak with. When a recruiter sees that the student knows about the company, what open positions they have and what they are interested in, it shows that the student is very organized and proactive. I also highly recom-mend students stop by the Career Center and have their resumes critiqued.- Kim Radtke, Recruiter, Panda Restaurant Group, Inc. Q: How do you expect students attending a career fair to dress?A: Students should definitely dress in business attire. On hot days it is hard to wear a formal black suit, so in those instances, a dress shirt, tie and slacks will still convey a professional image. - Kim Radtke, Recruiter, Panda Restaurant Group, Inc. Q: How can students create a positive first impression?A: Students can create a positive first impression by simply being prepared. Know which employers you are interested in talking to and have questions ready. - Sarinna Chavez, Manager of Recruiting & Training, Southern Wine and Spirits Q: What are you looking for when screening a candidate?A: I look for confidence and personality when screening a candidate. I also look for good communication skills. When working in sales, you must be able to ap-proach anyone and build rapport with them. I am interested in students who are

A: At Panda, we look for students that have a strong willingness to learn and one that is very humble, but still confident. Sometimes students are so fo-cused on selling themselves, they forget to be humble about their abilities.- Kim Radtke, Recruiter, Panda Restaurant Group, Inc. Q: What is the most common mistake you see students make at career fairs?A: The most common mistake students make is visiting only those employers that they are interested in or that are “more popular.” Students should take advantage of exploring at least 5 other companies that they know nothing about and find out if the perfect opportunity is awaiting them.-Kim Radtke, Recruiter, Panda Restaurant Group, Inc. Q: What are the key factors in your decision to call back a student?A: I make the decision to call back students based on who shows genuine interest in Southern Wine & Spirits, as well as those who displayed confidence and en-thusiasm. Those who just drop off a resume and walk away expecting a call will probably not be called.- Sarinna Chavez, Manager of Recruiting & Training, Southern Wine and Spirits Q: When can students expect to receive an invitation to an interview following a career fair?A: I like to encourage students to sign up for “on campus interviews” after the job fair in order to really determine who is interested in my company and the position. However, if that is not an option I will call students as early as the next day to see if they would be interested in an interview. - Sarinna Chavez, Manager of Recruiting & Training, Southern Wine and Spirits A: Recruiters will normally follow-up no later than 2 weeks after the event to schedule an interview. -Kim Radtke, Recruiter, Panda Restaurant Group, Inc.
