Spring Carnival wrap up!

It all started off Caulfield Guineas Day - way back on Saturday October 14th when the team saddled up a big bunch of horses to have two of them returning home feature winners. Gailo Chop’s (above) almighty effort to make his way back to the top and take out the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Stakes leaving the memories of an almost career ending injury in the past, before Tosen Stardom finally got his first Group 1 on the board when he got the job done in the $500,000 Toorak Handicap. We kept the ball rolling into Caulfield Cup Day the following Saturday with four of our stable stars saluting on the ten race card. Snitzepeg made it two black type victories in a row when he took out the Listed $120,000 Gothic Stakes before Cliff’s Edge, Kiwia and Ulmann all took out Group 3 races.

Continues….

Cox Plate Day saw Gun Case fire yet another shot as he continued to race in outstanding form - taking out the Open 955m Handicap before Lucky Hussler made the Group 2 Crystal Mile his own with an impressive three length win..... and who could forget Humidor nearly upsetting the mighty mare Winx with his almighty performance in the feature $3 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate. We were taking some red hot form into the start of the Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington with Lyuba our only winner on Derby Day. Following a string of honest performances at black type level she finally broke through this preparation, narrowly saluting in the Group 3 Skip Sprint. The first Tuesday in November and the biggest day on the Australian Racing calendar was quickly upon us, with three runners in the big one - the $6 million Melbourne Cup, nerves were getting high. Big Duke ran ‘out of his skin’ to finish an outstanding fourth placing whilst Amelie’s Star and Humidor finished 12th and 19th respectively. Our winner for the day came from Tahanee who took out the $120,000 Tab.com.au Trophy with a nice on pace victory. After a busy few weeks we were at the final stretch - with just two days to go winners kept on coming! We had two runners saddled up in the $200,000 Country Cup final on Oaks Day with Another Coldie saluting over stablemate Night’s Watch. He settled down just off midfield on the outside and travelled well into the straight. As a split appeared to his outside at the 400m he ran on strongly, showing great fight to hold off his fast finishing stablemate who was gallant in defeat after being forced widest into the straight. The final day of the carnival was upon us and Tosen Stardom saved the best til last, saluting in his second Group 1 race for the Spring in the most outstanding fashion! Settling down in a midfield position on the fence in the $2 million Emirates Stakes he was blocked behind a wall of horses as they straightened up. Losing momentum all the way down the straight, a run finally appeared just after the 200m mark and we all watched in awe as Tosen Stardom showed everyone what he is truly made of - unleashing an outstanding turn of foot to go on and salute by 1.5 lengths. It was a jaw-dropping performance!! With the Spring Racing Carnival done and dusted for yet another year we congratulate and thank all owners involved as well as our staff who get these horses to the races in outstanding order!

BALLARAT CUP DAY Another year had flown by and yet another great day of racing at Ballarat Cup Day was upon us. There were track downgrades throughout the day as the heavens opened and rain teamed down but that didn’t stop us from getting a winning treble! The day started off in winning fashion with Brugal Reward taking out race number 1 and getting her first win on the board this preparation, saluting in the $60,000 Mares Benchmark 78 Handicap. Royal Ace made the inside barrier and stepping out the mile trip a winning combination in the Benchmark 70 Handicap. Settling behind the leader on the fence he peeled to their outside straightening up and showed great fight down the straight to hold off the fast finishing Mount Panorama. Our Cup runner Mr Garcia finished in fifth position but it was Got The Goss who ended the day on a high - making it back to back victories with a fast finishing performance in the $70,000 Open Handicap over 1200m. The win was the tenth of his career! Congratulations to everyone involved in what was another successful Ballarat Cup Day!

Cliffs Edge

Owner Profile John Sutcliffe

Not only has he been a long-time friend but John Sutcliffe has enjoyed many memories throughout his

years as a horse owner and supporter of Darren Weir Racing. He first got involved in racehorse ownership way back in 2003 with a mare by the name of Manhattan Treasure. The mare won her

second race start before going on to win three more races (as well as a further nine minor placings) in her 24 start career. One of those victories was at Moonee Valley on May 26th 2007 – a day no doubt

well recollected by John being his first city winner.

He had further success in 2011 when Manhattan Treasure’s sister, Manhattan Maid who on the back of a city win at her second race start went onto black type glory to claim a Two Year Old Fillies Stakes race

at Morphettville. John has always been a big part of the stable, working closely with Gerry Ryan and soon forming a

close friendship with Les Whorlow. The pair met through mutual friend and jockey Kevin Mitchell who sadly passed away in 2014. In their dear friends memory they decided to name their Flying Spur/Lady Succeed colt after him. Kevin’s Time, who to this day is still in work at Darren Weir’s has been an ever-

honest performer throughout his fifteen start career.

In his spare time John is a member of a few lunch clubs including the Thoroughbred Club of Australia and the Vingt Cinq Club. He spends a lot of time out in the garden, playing golf and enjoys keeping fit, a

quality he has always sustained since his time as an ex AFL umpire. He has two sons and five grandchildren whom he loves spending time with and all share his passion for watching the races.

John stays active within our stable, just a few weeks ago he made the trip out to Swettenham Stud with

Darren, Mick and Les where they caught up with some stable favourites including Trust In A Gust (photographed below with Darren) and Puissance De Lune.

We are lucky to have such fantastic owners like John involved in Darren Weir Racing and we hope the

friendship and success can continue on for years to come!
