From the Secretary’s Desk The first thing I need to do is apologize to Clyde Huddleston, Sr, 33, MSA. When I did the article in the last newsletter about a member completing his passport and receiving a certificate I forgot to mention Clyde had also previously completed a passport. Sorry Clyde. Supreme Council will soon be issuing GOLD Passports to the members who have completed at least one passport. I do not know exactly how this is going to work but their passports will be immediately recognized. The Lodge of Perfection meeting in Newcomerstown is scheduled for March 11. There is an article on Page 1 about this and I hope you get this in time to make a reservation. You never know with bulk mailings when they will be delivered. We did a mailing of about 400 members in the Newcomerstown area and hope for a good crowd. If you want to attend give the office a call. I am sure the Eastern Star will try to accommodate us. Also at the bottom of Page 1 we have included the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction Supreme Council’s Vision & Mission statements. I hope we never forget that we are supposed to be a fraternity and look after each other. I also hope that we remember to include Inspiration, Convenience, and Enjoyment in all of our activities. We have work to do in these areas, but we are trying. The Valley recently received a Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust from Wilma Jordan. Wilma passed away in 2011 and was the wife of Paul Jordan. Paul was a member of Mt. Moriah #37 at Beverly, the Valley of Cambridge, and passed away in 1992. We appreciate Wilma and Paul for remembering the Valley in their end of life giving plans. Fraternally, Tom Fisher

NOVEMBER 16, 2013 200 YEARS OF BROTHERHOOD RECEPTION On Saturday November 16, 2013 the Valley of Cambridge will celebrate the 200th

Anniversary of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction with a Reception at the Southgate Hotel in Cambridge. The event will be catered by Theo’s Catering. This reception is to recognize the 32°Masons initiated during 2012 and 2013 and their First Line Signers. The event will be free to candidates and spouses and their first line signers and spouses. A nominal charge will be made for other interested members and their ladies. Set the date aside, especially if you are a new 32° Scottish Rite Mason (2012 or 2013) or a first line signer. Grand Master of Ohio James F Easterling, Jr and his wife, Jill, have consented to be with us. He will have completed his year as Grand Master and I am confident that his

insights on Masonry and the Scottish Rite will be worth your while. This event will be by reservation and space will be limited. More information will be provided later. It is never too early to start planning.

Perry County Scottish Rite Club Peerless Pete, that fearless weather prognosticating

rodent from Perry County, made a visit to Peerless Lodge #591

on February 2 at their monthly pancake breakfast. He was

greeted by Shaun Marlot, Worshipful Master, and Tim Frash,

Senior Warden. Peerless Pete reportedly spoke to the

Worshipful Master in “groundhogese” and since he did not see

his shadow predicted an early spring for the Perry County area.

Whether it is an early spring or not, a nice crowd was on hand,

the food was good, and masonic fellowship was enjoyed by all.

The next meeting of the Perry County Scottish Rite Club

is scheduled for May 7 at 7:30 pm at Peerless #591 F&AM. All

Scottish Rite members are welcome to attend.

Headquarters in Lexington has given us word that Children’s Dyslexia Center’s Initial Teacher Training classes have been re-accredited for another seven years. This accreditation comes from the highly regarded International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC). It is important for those who graduate from the Dyslexia Centers’ training to have this affirmation of their credentials since it gives additional reasons to take our course that are over and above having the luxury of tutoring at the Scottish Rite Centers. Accreditation will enhance a private tutoring practice. There has been much happening at the State level concerning House Bills 96 and 157 aimed at early identification of children with dyslexia. Educational institutions can contract with qualified dyslexia specialists to provide professional development for Ohio teachers in grades K-4. Our accredited training course satisfies the requirement of being a dyslexia specialist. It is likely to have continued future implications to anyone interested in helping children with dyslexia achieve success. By the end of February, the four participants of our current training class will have completed 24 of the 45-hour classroom requirement and will begin tutoring. (Training also includes a 100-hour supervised practicum.) There is no charge for the training as long as the practicum is completed at the Dyslexia Center. In addition to the four scholars, there are three volunteer, certified tutors participating in the class. A very collegial environment has been created while their

knowledge is shared with the newbies. Most participants will agree that successful Orton-Gillingham tutoring is much more complicated than it appears. Each week, the child gets the benefit of two, intense, personalized lessons into which much thought has been directed towards helping the child successfully move towards becoming a good reader. These training sessions (and the actual lessons) are rewarding for both children and tutors. Anyone interested in working in a stimulating environment should consider joining us in the future. February contained Valentine’s Day, the birth of a new grand child, and the marriage of a son. This led to contemplation of the word love. Why doesn’t it rhyme with stove? In this word the function of the silent “e” at the end isn’t to make the preceding vowel long but since no English word ends with v that becomes its function. But that still doesn’t solve the problem of having it sound more like “luv”. Since originally, “u” and “v” were different forms of the same letter, writing either “vv” or “uu” would be confusing and look like “w”. So the letter “o” is substituted for “u” and avoids this. This also answers questions about dove, above, glove, oven, cover, and shovel. The English language is more logical than most people think. Sometimes we are just not aware of this logic.
