Spring Convocation2017
june 8 & 9
Dear Graduand,
Your graduation began long before this day.
It began when you made the choice to study that extra hour, dedicate yourself more deeply, and strive to reach for the degree you had chosen to fully commit your life to pursuing.
Many of the people that helped you arrive here today are seated beside you—friends, family, classmates—while others are thinking of you from afar.
We are honoured to have given you a place to discover, inspire others and be challenged beyond what you thought was possible.
We hope you know, we will always be that place for you.
Yours,
UBC

1 SPRING CONVOCATION 2017
The UBC graduation journey has been forged by the spirit of the university’s motto, Tuum Est, (meaning ‘it is yours’) since 1915. Today, you, the graduating class of 2017, now shape UBC’s history by making it your own.
THE GRADUATION JOURNEY
2 SPRING CONVOCATION 2017
1916One of the first graduating classes was the Arts Class of 1916 pictured here at a party at the home of Mary Wilons. In UBC’s first year, there were only three faculties: Arts, Applied Science and Agriculture with 379 registered students and 34 faculty members.
1920sThe student-led Great Trek to UBC’s Point Grey established the university’s first campus. The Alma Mater Society (AMS) incorporated as a non-profit society and the university began awarding its first graduate degrees to students. In the Ubyssey, published in September 23, 1925, students described the new campus with a sense of wonder: “We are dazed with the appearance of architectural cleanliness and bewildered by our lineal freedom.”
1940sThe forties were an era of tremendous change at the university as both students and faculty embraced the war effort. In 1943, new President Norman MacKenzie began in earnest to expand the university and new departments were formed along with new buildings to house them including Brock Hall and the first student union building. By the 1950s, UBC had established itself as a comprehensive university and top choice for students in BC and beyond.
3 SPRING CONVOCATION 2017
1960sStudent numbers continued to escalate alongside the scholarly activities that began to define UBC as a leader in research. The campus was alive with sixties counterculture and a sixth president of UBC was elected by the name of Dr. Walter Gage. New student residences were created to respond to the expanding student body as well as a new student union building. Students gained influence at the university and were elected to the University Board of Governors for the first time.
1980sWith over 34,000 students registered at the beginning of the eighties, UBC began attracting scholars from all over the world. Engineering students were in the news frequently for their pranks, which included the famous Ladner Clock Tower stunt in which students pulled off hoisting a white Volkswagen Bug onto the top of the tower. Dr. Martha Piper was elected President in 1997 and ushered in an era of international engagement that saw UBC step onto the world stage as an educator and global centre for research excellence.
2000sThe demand for increased access to post-secondary education led to the official opening of UBC’s Okanagan campus in 2005. Student learning opportunities multiplied as UBC expanded to include two major campuses—the Vancouver Campus and the Okanagan Campus.
2017Close to 13,000 students will become the Class of 2017. They will go on to join over 325,000 alumni who have successfully graduated from UBC and continue their journey as treasured members of the UBC community.

GRADUATION TRADITIONS
5 SPRING CONVOCATION 2017
THE UNIVERSITY MACE
The Mace is carried by the ‘Macebearer’ who leads the Platform Party, which includes the Chancellor, the President and other dignitaries, onto the stage for the Convocation ceremonies.
Created by First Nations artist Sheldon Louis of the Okanagan Indian Band, the University Mace is carved from a single piece of alder wood, and combines Okanagan Nation traditions with university customs. The main artwork on the Mace features three symbolic spirit icons—a mother bear with her two cubs, the image of the mountains, and water— given to UBC Okanagan in 2005 by the Okanagan Nation elders. The spirit icon gifts were selected by a group of First Nation elders, led by Andrew McGinnis, an Okanagan Traditional Medicine Keeper from the Penticton Indian Band, and Victor Antoine, an elder of the Okanagan Indian Band. Each spirit icon was chosen carefully for its special significance to the region, reflecting local Okanagan Nation tradition, culture and knowledge.
The Mace also features a number of university symbols, including the UBC Okanagan logo, the University coat of arms and the UBC motto Tuum Est – It’s Yours. In addition, the back of the Mace displays the word Suknaqinx, which is of the Nsyilxcen language, spoken by the Okanagan’s original people. Roughly translated, it means “the ones who stand on the hill and are seen and heard from far away.”The University Mace, which was carved in the shape of a paddle, representing the importance of Okanagan Lake to the region’s people, is also inlaid with silver, applied by First Nations silversmith artist Justin Terbasket of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band. The Mace was used for the first time at the 2009 Convocation ceremonies.
THE PROCESSION
Chancellor Lindsay Gordon shakes the hand of every student that crosses the stage—that’s over 10,000 students each year. This handshake signifies the transition from student to graduate.
REGALIA COLOURS
The hoods, gowns and hats worn by graduates are lined with colours to indicate the degree to be conferred, a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages when the first universities were founded.
THE CHANCELLOR’S OKANAGAN CHAIR
In 2007, UBC’s Okanagan campus commissioned the creation of a new Chancellor’s chair for use in Okanagan Convocation ceremonies. Handcrafted by master furniture maker Dennis Weidman of Lake Country, BC, the chair was fashioned from cherry wood, a species selected for its significance in the Okanagan’s long history as a fruit–growing region.
The chair’s front panel features UBC’s motto, Tuum Est, the UBC logo laser engraved in the headrest panel, and UBC’s coat of arms on each side panel.
The University Mace is a symbol of the authority of the Chancellor. It is displayed on ceremonial occasions, most notably during the Convocation ceremonies but also during the installation of a President or Chancellor.
CHANCELLOR’S WELCOME
6 SPRING CONVOCATION 2017
I am indeed honoured to take part in your celebration, and to congratulate you and those who have supported you on what I hope has been a fulfilling and transformational journey.
I also wish to welcome you as the newest members of the UBC Alumni Association, and at a particularly significant juncture in its history. It was exactly 100 years ago -- May 4, 1917, to be precise -- that a group of students who shared a passionate interest in the future of their university came together to create the Alumni Association.
With the spirit of those students in mind, my message to you a century later is simply this: Irrespective of what pursuits you undertake in the future, ensure they are activities in which you can maintain a passionate interest. But as you do, remain sharply aware of the perpetual changes in the world around you. The spectrum of knowledge is vastly wider, and the influencers of change – social, cultural, economic and technological -- are far more complex than ever before.
As a result, you will invariably encounter new circumstances and unanticipated opportunities, and you may well be tempted to pursue an entirely new
direction tomorrow than what you may be contemplating today. It is therefore essential to listen to your heart and mind; Remain curious, open-minded and flexible as the journey unfolds.
At the same time, ensure that you play your part in helping to build a diverse, inclusive and better community. Understand the challenges that we face, and the obligations that we make to one another in a civil society, and not only to our neighbors at home but to strangers from afar. Above all, seek evidence-supported truth and human compassion over uninformed opinion and misplaced fear.
One final thought -- graduation should never mean goodbye. As alumni, I sincerely hope you will remain connected in some way to your university. Please take advantage of the many opportunities to be active and engaged members of our alumni community, which has grown from just 40 members a century ago to over 325,000 today.
On behalf of all of them, I extend my very best wishes on this most joyous occasion.
— LINDSAY GORDON, BA’73, MBA’76
Here it is at last—your graduation day.
7 SPRING CONVOCATION 2017
8 SPRING CONVOCATION 2017
PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
I hope that when you do look back on your time at UBC, you will do so with fondness, and that when you look ahead, you will see UBC as a part of your future. You will always be welcome here, and we look forward to hearing about your personal and professional achievements as you build on the foundation provided by your UBC degree.
As new graduates, you are joining a large group of remarkable people who have preceded you through this ceremony. Indeed, this year marks the 100th anniversary of Alumni UBC and today, the graduates of UBC excel in practically every field of human endeavor. Three graduates have served as Prime Minister of Canada - including the incumbent Justin Trudeau. Seventy graduates have been awarded the Rhodes Scholarship and 65 graduates have won an Olympic medal. Our alumni include scientists, inventors and entrepreneurs, educators, activists, artists, writers and humanitarians. Wherever they may be, our talented graduates are contributing to the wellbeing of their fellow citizens and solving some of the grand challenges that face humanity. As you begin a new stage in your life and experience, you can be confident that you
can and will make a difference, because like the UBC graduates who have gone before you, you possess the knowledge and skills that are conferred by an excellent education.
At every level and in every course you’ve taken here, you have been exposed to the rigours of critical thinking, to the complexities of problem-solving, and to the need for risk-taking and imagination in the creation of new ideas. You have developed strong communication skills in a variety of media, and learned the value of teamwork and collaboration. You have encountered people and ideas from a wide variety of backgrounds, in the process acquiring a new understanding of cultures and traditions that differ from your own.
As you cross the boundary between life as a student and life as an engaged and contributing member of society, do not be afraid to take up the challenges that await you; you will have many opportunities to turn your hard-earned expertise and knowledge to good use, to become involved in your society, and to offer your ideas and solutions with the confidence that they will be heard and respected.
In his address to UBC’s initial graduating class in 1916, UBC’s first President Frank Wesbrook encouraged students to make our world a better place in which to live. Today, 101 years later, I echo his remarks. I believe each of you has the capacity and skill to succeed and make our world a better place.
As you celebrate this transformational day with your family and friends, take a minute to reflect and think forward to the many ways you might help shape the world in the years ahead.
And one more thing. Graduation should never mean goodbye. As Professor Wesbrook also said at that time, Tuum Est —it’s your university—today and always.
Best wishes,
— Professor Santa J. Ono
Congratulations! Graduation is a momentous day in your life. It is a time to look back at all you’ve accomplished and a time to look ahead to what’s next.
9 SPRING CONVOCATION 2017
Elders, Chiefs, Board of Governors, dignitaries, faculty, family, friends, students and the 2017 graduates, on behalf of the Okanagan Nation Chiefs and our member communities we welcome you to our beautiful Syilx Territory and to UBC’s Okanagan Campus Spring Convocation 2017.
We are pleased to extend a special congratulation to all the new UBC Syilx Okanagan Nation graduates. We are honoured to be part of your Convocation Ceremony. We want to take this opportunity to recognize your achievement. The honouring of one’s intellect and acquiring of knowledge are vital to Syilx people. Moreover, learning has always been valued in our communities. Learning and expanding one’s understanding is fundamental to one’s well-being and community for our survival as a people.
It is also an important part of Syilx customs and community life to conduct ceremonies that acknowledge and award achievement. Even today, announcements are made within the Nation that “this is a day of significance to this person, (family and/or community) and you are all
welcome to share in this celebration”. Today, we are pleased to mark and celebrate the accomplishments of all 2017 UBC graduates.
The Syilx Okanagan have always shared through their nsyilxcen language, their teaching, their knowledge and their culture with others. It is our responsibility and duty to use these gifts and serve our community. Now as graduates, you too will have this opportunity to share your education. We encourage you to serve your community!
The Okanagan Nation Alliance and UBC Okanagan have forged a new path of partnership and inclusion so that we can all learn to embrace, strengthen and celebrate our diversity. The pursuit of academic excellence will continue to advance and transform our societies. Syilx Okanagan participation in today’s convocation ceremony and within the life of this University bodes well for our future and our communities.

We are beautiful / Because we are Okanagan / Because our land is Beautiful
OKANAGAN SONG
The Okanagan Song is based on a traditional song style calledskəlmxquin. Skəlmxqin songs belong to the Okanagan/Syilx people collectively. Songs of this style can be sung by any Okanagan/Syilx person using their own phrasing and their own emotion while maintaining the formal rhythm and structure. This song has been called the “Okanagan Song” or the “Okanagan Nation Anthem” because the phrasing and meaning were constructed to celebrate pride in being Okanagan.
Translation of suknaquinx skəlmxquinxNote: the word aɬi translates three separate ways in this song.

SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS & CONTRIBUTIONS
HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT
ALEX JANVIER, C.M.
Doctor of Letters, honoris causaAlex Janvier is one of Canada’s most acclaimed contemporary artists, recognized nationally and internationally as a modern indigenous master and leader in the arts.
Over the past year, 150 of his paintings and drawings were featured in a major retrospective at the National Gallery of Canada. His work is described as “universal in appeal” and the National Gallery noted that “his paintings on paper, canvas and linen reference Indigenous culture and history and explore his experience of residential school and the effects of colonization.”
Mr. Janvier was born on the Le Goff Reserve of the Cold Lake First Nation in Northern Alberta and is of Dene Suline and Saulteaux descent.
At the age of eight, he was sent to a residential school near St. Paul, Alberta, where the school principal recognized remarkable artistic talent. He went on to receive formal art training at the Alberta Institute of Art and Technology, graduating with honours in 1960, before taking up a position as art instructor at the University of Alberta's Department of Extension.
In 1966, he was awarded a major commission from the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs to series of 80 paintings and a year later he gathered a group of Canada’s foremost Indigenous artists for the Indians of Canada Pavilion at Expo ’67.
Mr. Janvier is a member of the Order of Canada and the Alberta Order of Excellence. He is a recipient of the Governor-General’s Award in Visual and
Media Arts as well as the Centennial Medal of the Province of Alberta. He has been artist-in-residence within the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at UBC’s Okanagan campus, and is one of the last members of the acclaimed artist collective known as the Indian Group of Seven.
Honorary degrees are conferred on deserving individuals who have made substantial contributions to society. Conferred honoris causa, “for the sake of honour,” these degrees are awarded as one of three types: Doctor of Laws, Doctor of Letters and Doctor of Science.
12 SPRING CONVOCATION 2017
DR. RAMON LAWRENCE
Associate Professor in Computer Science, Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences
Highly commended for his dedication to the scholarship of teaching at the professorial rank, Dr. Lawrence is a nurturer of students whose commitment to teaching is evident in every course, every class and every student’s experience.
And his students reflect this—his excellence in teaching practices has been recognized by student teaching evaluation scores well beyond the norm. Dr. Lawrence has been among the top 10 per cent of faculty—named to the UBC Okanagan Teaching Honour Roll—in eight of the past nine years.
Students value the knowledge gained from Dr. Lawrence’s classes, benefitting from his experience outside of academia in the computer science industry. They are inspired by his enthusiasm and approachability, and drawn to his lectures by such direct relevance to their studies and future careers.
DR. CHRISTINE SCHREYER
Associate Professor of Anthropology, Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences
Dr. Schreyer is an innovator in developing socially relevant and community-engaged courses, single-handedly creating a popular and compelling degree pathway in linguistic anthropology for the Anthropology program.
She is known as a mentor to her students, and a highly respected and well-loved teacher who brings together innovative pedagogical techniques with social engagement.
This was evident in her endangered languages class, in which students partnered with a small group of elders from the Splats’in First Nation, developing learning tools to assist the elders in sustaining their endangered language.
Dr. Schreyer’s teaching exemplifies the bringing together of students, community and the wider world in ways that are entertaining and that push the boundaries of student experience.
AWARDS FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE AND INNOVATION
The Teaching Excellence and Innovation Awards recognize outstanding faculty members for their achievements in innovation, engagement and dedication to teaching excellence.
The successful award winners are exemplary role models who have had, and will continue to have, a significant impact on the culture of teaching and learning on the Okanagan campus and beyond.
PRESIDENT’S SERVICE AWARDS
FOR EXCELLENCE
The President’s Service Award for Excellence is one of the highest honours a UBC staff member can receive. This award recognizes those whose efforts make a difference to both the University and campus life.

You join us at an auspicious moment for alumni UBC—your alumni association, which is marking its 100th year!
To honour this special year we are inviting our alumni to make 100,000 connections with UBC and with each other across the globe. To find out more - and to put yourself on the map, literally!—visit alumni.ubc.ca and check out your global alumni UBC network, which has been a century in the making.
Many students don’t realize that when you graduate from UBC’s Okanagan campus, you automatically become a member of alumni UBC and your relationship with the University enters a whole new phase.
You might be surprised at just who your fellow alumni are, and their levels of accomplishment, influence and contribution to society. No matter where you go, you will find yourself in the company of amazing people who are making a real difference in the world—in an extraordinary variety of ways—UBC grads who will be your role models, mentors, colleagues and friends.
alumni UBC will help you connect through our communications, website and social networks. You can participate in our
mentoring, cultural, education and career-building programs, in the Okanagan, greater Vancouver and around the world through alumni networks as far away as London, Hong Kong and Seoul or as close as Victoria, Calgary and Toronto.
After the ceremony today, be sure to visit the Alumni Welcome Tent with your friends and family. You can activate your free alumni UBC A-Card and meet the Okanagan campus alumni UBC team! And when you’re on the Vancouver campus, visit the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre. It’s your home for life, where you will always be welcome to make alumni connections, participate in a myriad of programs, or book your own meetings or celebrations.
Remember our motto: Tuum Est (it’s yours). UBC is still yours. It will always be yours. So reach out. Stay in touch. Ask for help when you need it. Lend a hand when you can. To learn all about what alumni UBC can do for you, visit alumni.ubc.ca.
Best wishes for a bright future,
— jeff todd Associate Vice President, Alumni Executive Director, alumni UBC
