Spring General Meeting
The Spring General Meeting was held on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at the
beautiful, historical Hower House. Guests enjoyed delicious cabbage
rolls from the Waterloo restaurant. Plans for the evening changed a bit
due to cold weather and unexpected snow fall. Unfortunately Denise
Beck’s speech on health care benefits was postponed to a future meet-
ing date.
The general meeting went on as planned and guests were able to greet
and congratulate our scholarship recipient, Lisa Brunton (pictured below
with Diane Vukovich). Lisa is a lovely mother of two who is working
toward her Associate Degree in Business Management. Thanks to Jane
Gwinn for capturing some fantastic photos.

Reflections of My Years as a
University of Akron Women’s
Club Member and Officer
By Jane Gwinn
(pictured at right with husband John)
In 1993 I married UA faculty member
John Gwinn who had been widowed for
ten years. Knowing that John had remarried and that I would not be
aware of the Faculty Women’s Club, Marie Richardson graciously
invited me to the Spring General Meeting at Hower House. I
enjoyed the evening and program as well as meeting all the women
from the University who attended. Marie then invited me to join
FWC which I did and have been a member since. As a new mem-
ber I began participating in the special activities and joined the
Gourmet Club. John and I have had a great time at the dinners. I
am so grateful for the invitation and opportunity to join The Universi-
ty of Akron Women’s Club (UAWC), as we are now known, and
know I would not have met the friends I have now and enjoyed the
activities of UAWC.
But Marie wasn’t done! She asked me to be a board member. I
joined the board in 1995 as a corresponding secretary. Other than
one year, I’ve served on the board and served as in new member-
ship chair, special activities/historian chair, president, scholarship
chair, and secretary until now. Being on the board has been a re-
warding experience working with all the members to plan events,
make changes and introduce new ideas. I have decided to step
down after this year, but I have to say I have enjoyed meeting the
new members and seeing them get active and participate in the
activities offered as I have.
Although I am leaving the board I will treasure all the friends I have
made and continue to participate in the activities. I look forward to
seeing everyone at activities and events and hope you will consider
inviting someone to join (UAWC) and consider participating on the
board at some point.
Hiking Group
The UAWC Hiking group resumes this month. Please join us
on April 26th at the Bluebells in Cuyahoga Valley Trail
(CVNP) at10 a.m. Details and a complete listing of this
year’s schedule is enclosed in this Newsletter.

Book Review by Sharon Gandee
The delight of our book review group is in the variety of the
books we read. Often, someone’s enthusiasm and recommen-
dation exposes us to a book we otherwise would not have
read. February’s book, Lab Girl, by Hope Jahren, prompted a
MOST spirited discussion. Many of us identified with the author
and her experiences as a university researcher and the politics
of such. The warm relationship of Hope and her lab assistant
moved all of the readers. That many were able to draw paral-
leles to specific situations made it all the more interesting.
March’s books was Night, by Elie Weisel. While we all knew
about this book, many of us had never read it and so were
pleased to be prompted to read it. We need to be reminded of
a man’s inhumanity to his own lest we repeat it. It seems we
are at the cusp of such today.
April’s book is
Hillbilly Elegy,
by J.D. Vance.
