“Web Prices without the Wait”

Welcome to Banksia Buzz Wanneroo MLA Paul Miles I’m delighted that there’s now a successor to the much-loved “Banksia Nuts” and I’d like to congratulate Banksia Grove Development on taking up the challenge of keeping Banksia Grove locals informed about what is happening in their suburb. It’s also great that monies raised from advertising in this publication will this year be donated to the 2011 “Spring in the Grove” event. Most people will now be aware that road works have commenced on the project to provide dual lanes on Joondalup Drive, between St Stephens Crescent and Tumbleweed Drive. This project, funded under the State Road Funds to Local Government Agreement, will bring about a major improvement in traffic safety when it’s completed. The total cost of the project is estimated at $3.35 million, of which $2.23 million has been funded by the State Government and the remainder by the City of Wanneroo. During a recent visit to Wanneroo electorate by the Minister for Transport, Troy Buswell, I was able to show him first-hand the need for traffic lights at the intersection of Joondalup Drive and Mistletoe

Drive in Banksia Grove, the main crossing point for many local primary students on their way to and from school. In the short time we were there, the Minister was struck by the number of heavy vehicles using this road and the obvious danger the volume and speed of this traffic poses to all pedestrians. He has promised to have his Department investigate the matter further. If I can assist you with any State Government-related issues, please don’t hesitate to contact my office on telephone 9405 1244 or by email [email protected] Kind regards

The wet weather has been a perfect time for 15 trainees to commence a training programme in Banksia Grove. Using the opportunities provided by the Banksia Grove Development, participants in the programme will complete a Certificate 2 in Conservation and Land Management. This will involve completing units and hands on work experience on a range of topics including recognising plants and animals from the local area, understanding how traditional owners used the country, carrying out restoration and rehabilitation work, installing fencing, paths and structures and learning to operate machinery and equipment. Brad Goodlet, Banksia Grove Community Development Manager said the course will run over six months and is a partnership

PIC TO COME

Catherine Davey Dance Company (CDDC) is a fun and friendly dance studio that operates out of Neerabup Primary School, Banksia Grove. CDDC first opened at the Banksia Grove Center in 2008 and moved to Neerabup Primary in 2010 where they have continued to grow. They welcome all ages & abilities as Cat (owner/principal) believes dancing should be fun and it doesn’t matter how well you can dance, it just matters that you enjoy it!!! She runs the classes with a loving and relaxed family atmosphere but still aims for a high standard. With a variety of classes, anyone in the community is welcome to have a go. From Mummy/Daddy & Me classes for 3yrs & Under, up to Adult Jazz/Fitness & Tap. They also offer Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Acrobatics & Hip Hop to a variety of ages. To share their love of dancing and the enjoyment it can bring and to also help the dancers gain confidence, a group of CDDC dancers will be touring some local retirement homes later in the year. Some of these dancers will also enter their first dancing competitions this year. Students that are old enough, if interested, can help with younger classes so they can start learning how to teach children to dance. Which is a skill they may choose to use in the future. Catherine Davey Dance Company enjoys being apart of the Banksia Grove community and are excited for what the future may bring!!! For more information please feel free to contact Catherine on email [email protected] or phone 0404 735 760.

Property Market Update By Matthew Mulè, Harcourts Alliance There is no doubt that the current property market is a little shaky to say the least, but overall, I believe that Banksia Grove has a bright future ahead. Following the property boom in 2007 where the median house price in Banksia Grove rose quickly to $369,000, the subsequent crash in 2008 saw it drop back to $350,000 according to REIWA. Since then we have seen a steady increase with the current median price sitting at $387,000 for 2011 to date which is a good sign given many suburbs around Perth have only just recovered back to their prices in 2007. While it may still take a few years, Banksia Grove will inevitably see more growth with the completion of the proposed new Primary and High Schools as well as an enormous Shopping District which will bring many more necessary amenities closer to its residents. Furthermore, with over 4000 new dwellings being built on the northern side of Joondalup Drive, the Suburb is attracting a lot of positive attention as it offers a wider variety of homes to offer potential buyers. Every aspect of the new development has been thoroughly considered to bring a better quality of life to its residents and a natural harmony with the surrounding environment with plenty of parklands and playgrounds for the growing families. It now truly offers something for everyone and it’s only getting better. For an obligation free property update so you can check the health of your biggest asset - your home, call Matthew on 0423 237 330.

Introducing Kylie Nicholl Banksia Grove Community Centre

Kylie Nicholl is the friendly face who welcomes visitors to the Banksia Grove Community Centre. Kylie, who is employed by the City of Wanneroo, has been at the community centre for the last 12 months. Before coming to Banksia Grove, she worked at the Yanchep Community Centre, which is also the suburb where she lives. During her time at Banksia Grove, Kylie has seen a big increase in the number of groups who use the centre. “Young parents and their children are the main users of the centre. We have 11 active play groups and the toy library is very popular. Parents often come to know about the centre as the child health clinics are also based here” said Kylie. Kylie says that the range of support groups using the centre makes her job interesting. This includes youth activities, multi-cultural groups for people from African backgrounds, Moorditj Yarning meetings and art and craft workshops for

Nyoongah women, the Groovy Grannies over 55’s womens group and the Celebrate Recovery Dinner Club. “We are also increasing the number of other activities available such as star guides, a Helen O’grady Drama Academy,

Bibbulmun Gurlonga traditional and contemporary Aboriginal Dance and fitness classes” said Kylie. Kylie is very keen to hear from residents who would like to start a group up at the community centre and to get suggestions about the types of programmes and activities that people would like to see happen at the centre.

“The goal for the centre is for it to be the hub of our community and a big part of my role is to support people being involved in setting up and running the groups and activities in which they have interests.” A Community Centre program is in this edition of the Banksia Buzz . Kylie can be contacted on 9405 2722 or drop in to the Centre Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm.

The first semester has been a busy and rewarding time at Neerabup Primary School. Following an extensive building program in 2010, our growing school population of 390 students returned for the start of the 2011 school year and were all accommodated in our purpose built facilities. Our Pre-Primary students are now housed in our new Early Childhood Centre and our Year 4/5 students are housed in Swan Block. All students are taking advantage of our new Library and Arts Centre. Throughout the semester all students have been involved in a variety of rich, relevant learning experiences. Highlights have included:

A car wash to raise funds for victims of the New Zealand earthquake.

$2,000 was raised for the “World Greatest Shave”.

Our students correctly answered 83,930 mental computations on World Maths Day.

In May our school was treated to an inspirational performance by the Watoto Children’s Choir. Our school observed National Sorry Day. All students were involved in learning experiences designed to promote the rich culture and history of the First Australians. The day concluded with 400 kites flying over our school. Our Year 3, 5 and 7 students completed the 2011 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). Their endeavours were greatly enhanced through their involvement in the “Your Tutor” program. Thanks to sponsorship from the Banksia Grove Development all students have had access to online tutoring facilities to assist their acquisition of Numeracy, Reading and Language Conventions. We look forward to the remainder of the year and the opportunity to welcome new families to the Banksia Grove Community.

Banksia Grove Catholic Primary School Opens New Multipurpose Hall & Shades

On 30th June 2011 Banksia Grove Catholic Primary School (BGCPS) celebrated the official Blessing and Opening of its Building Education Revolution – Multipurpose Hall & Shade Sails. Many parents joined the school’s staff and students for this event. BGCPS were privileged to have Senator Louise Pratt attend and officially open the new building & shades. Fr John Daly, from St Anthony’s Church in Wanneroo attended to the blessings of the structures. The school community was entertained by the BGCPS Choir and Band. The School’s new school song was performed for everyone. Many comments were made about the very ‘catchy & fun’ school song. After the formal events of the morning, staff and students enjoyed light refreshments with parents and official guests. Even though it was overcast and raining, the day was a great success.

Hi, My name is Kalpesh and I’m your local pharmacist. I’ve been a pharmacist for over 15 years, 12 of these in Australia. I moved to Australia from Kenya in 1999. I lived in Bunbury for 11 years and have recently moved to the local area with my young family. Winter is well and truly here and we’re in the midst of peak cold and flu season. So stock up now on your Paracetamol, Cold and Flu tablets, tissues, lozenges and throat sprays before you get sick. Prevention is better than cure, but it’s not always possible. If you’re like me and have young children at home who go to school, then there is no way you can run away from a runny nose. However, try and build up your immunity. Eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, drink at least 2 litres of water a day and get plenty of rest at night. Take a good multi-vitamin daily. Make sure you regularly wash your and your children’s hands with soap and water. This will prevent germs from spreading. If you haven’t already, consider getting a flu vaccination. Come in and see me for fast and friendly service and advice. I also provide the following professional services: Free blood pressure

Handy Hints Rub hand cream on the heels of new leather shoes to soften the leather and avoid getting blisters If you have a child with allergies and want to get rid of mites from soft toys. Pop the toys in the freezer overnight and the mites will be killed off by morning. Mix half wholemeal pasta with regular white pasta. The children will not notice but the fibre and carbs are much healthier. Don’t use newspapers to clean windows, use vinegar and paper towels. Wipe the insides horizontally and the outside vertically for best results.

Banksia Grove’s Cutest Pets Joondalup Drive Turns Over New

Leaf

As part of the Joondalup Drive traffic calming and beautification works between Tumbleweed and Viridian Drives two unique artworks are to be installed. Designed in consultation with the Banksia Grove Art Reference Committee, the ‘Banksia Leaf’ artworks will provide a dramatic splash of colour and also act as a signal to drivers that they are in a residential area and to slow down. The Banksia Leaf artworks will be installed in late September. They will be the final element of this important project funded by Commonwealth Government, the City of Wanneroo and Banksia Grove Development, which was initiated due to the hard work and lobbying of the Banksia Grove Residents Association.
