Congratulations to all of our graduates. I know that these four years went by much faster than most of

you anticipated; however, you are embarking on

another exciting phase in your life. Amazing

possibilities await you. Take advantage of all of the

good opportunities that come your way.

I want to extend best wishes to two of our

graduate assistants that are graduating from Shepherd.

Fadela Belhaj received her Master’s degree in College

Student Development and Administration (CSDA), and

Tess Hyre received her Masters in Business

Administration (MBA). We will miss both of them next

    year.

I am pleased to announce that Da’Shawn Long

will be a graduate assistant in the TRiO Student Support

Services program next year as he begins his graduate work in the CSDA program.

He will work with our returning graduate assistant Ayana Jean.

During the 2016-17 academic year, the program served 165 students.

Eighty-one percent of these students were both first-generation and income eligible,

of the remaining students, 1/3 of the disabled students served were also income

eligible. Our persistence rate was 81% and 91% of our students were in good

    academic standing at the University.

This is an exciting year for TRiO. We are at the midway point of our first year

with our Upward Bound program and working hard to accomplish program goals and

objectives. We are happy to report that we have some outstanding students from

the four high schools in Berkeley County participating in the program. They are very

excited about the program and the fact that they are preparing to go to college at the

end of their high school career.

June 11, 2018 will be the first day of the Upward Bound Summer Academy at

Shepherd. Students will take classes on campus for six weeks. The classes will

prepare these students for classes they will take in high school next year. The

following classes will be offered: Math, Science, literature/English, French, Spanish

and Wellness. Thank you to everyone that has helped make a positive difference in our student’s lives. Working together, we can make a powerful impact

in helping students accomplish their goal of receiving a high school

    diploma and a bachelor’s degree.

Although the semester was very hectic, there were many great accomplish-

ments. Many of my students were able to adjust to the new semester and

overcame obstacles they faced. Two of my students Drew Davis and Brian

Crutchley, were appointed as tutors for the TRiO Upward Bound Program.

Senior students, Russell Goodacre and Christian Burns, received excep-

tional internship opportunities working with ESPN Wide World of Sports

Complex (Walt Disney College Program) and at the National Institute of

Standards and Technology (NIST), respectively. Seeing students strive and

reach for the stars is such a delightful feeling. It was very thrilling to see

all the TRiO students who walked across the stage to receive their well-

deserved diplomas on Saturday May 5th, 2018. As I often say to my stu-

dents, “I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the

position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has over-

come while trying to succeed.” (Booker T. Washington). I now ponder on the

many issues some students faced and how they managed to push through

    it.

    TRiO definitely works!

As we finish another academic year, I would like to take some time to reflect

on the year and think about the highlights. This was a very exciting year for

TRiO with a large incoming class of new SSS students and our first year wel-

coming our high school program Upward Bound. One big highlight for me was

our impressive volunteers for our TRiO Peer Mentor program. We had a lot of

new students and many of our returning students stepped up to help them in

their transition to Shepherd. Another highlight for me was having a Shepherd

TRiO/SSS student, Daisy Bautista, win the WV TRiO scholarship! We are very

proud to have Daisy representing our program. I am also excited to celebrate

the accomplishments of my 18 graduates this year. It has been a pleasure

working with such great students, and I am so excited to hear how many of

them have already secured jobs in their field after graduation. I wish you all

the best in your future endeavors! As we step into summer, I hope everyone

takes time to relax and rejuvenate so they can come back strong for another

    great year in Fall 2018.

    Workshops

    Spring 2018

    Women’s Empowerment Workshop

In this Workshop we learned how to be confident in ourselves and

how we are enough. The icebreaker was really nice because we got to

give compliments to other peers and receive them too. I am glad I

chose to come to this workshop because women’s representation in

today’s society has transformed how women, of all ages, see and feel

about themselves. It is important to remind people sometimes that

they are important, strong, and that no one else is or can be them.

    Diversity Workshop

In this workshop I learned that diversity is more than just your skin

color. Diversity is the conglomeration of ideas that make us unique

what we identify as is just a small fraction of the overall picture

when it comes to the challenges of diversity. Getting to know people

is another aspect to understanding the diversity issue. Instead of

assuming things and basing things on presumption, we should open-

ly discuss how we can change personal biases. Diversity means a lot

to this organization and it means a lot to me as well.

    DIY Stress Ball Workshop

The one thing that I love about TRiO is there are workshops throughout

the semester to allow yourself to become more involved with other

TRiO students. They also are beneficial when it comes to school! To-

day’s workshop was DIY Stress Ball. I tend to stress out during the

school semester, especially finals week, so this will totally benefit me!

Also, this workshop is so easy to remember that it is possible for me to

make more stress balls in the future while I'm stressing out!
