frame.Fast fashion may appear to be

all-singing and dancing while onthe rails, but once you’ve wornthat catwalk copy once it can loseits appeal.

“Their promise is that of instanttransformation, but more oftenthey wind up as gaudy landfill inyour closet,” Johnson says.

Face your shopping addictiondemons and lay all your can’t-wear-won’t-wear splurges out onyour bed next to your can’t-live-without staples.

“Work out a way to build a bridgebetween the clothes you love (butnever wear) and the standbys(pieces starting to wear thin withoveruse),” Johnson suggests.

“If your wardrobe is heavy oncasual wear but running danger-ously low for work and evening, invest in pieces that can be usedfor both – for example the LBD(little black dress).

“Very simple additions stretchthe clothes you do have.”

Savvy fashionT hese days the austerity

style club is the onlyone to join. Rather

than splashing out on thelatest catwalk trends, designdivas are cutting their budgetsand sitting prettily on theirsavings, writes Lisa Haynes.

Thankfully, with this season’strends – 70s, florals and flowingmaxi dresses – fashion revival isbignews, soyoucan tweakvintagelooks straight into 2011 mode.

AuthorofSavvyChicandvintageaddict Anna Johnson believes inthe cost-cutting business of fash-ioning more from less.

“In the grip of a luxury-drivenculture, it’s become very hard todiscern between what is vital andwhat’s just lust,” she says.

“Dressing well for less moneyactually involves buying less andbetter clothing, rather than moreand cheaper. It takes discipline.”

Prepare to thrift shop. Trade inyour treasures and DIY yourdresses – there’s a whole newwardrobe waiting that won’t costyou the earth.

Charity shops are like Marmite, you either do or you don’t. Butthere’s an art to wearing other

people’s clothes. Johnson explainsshoppers need to amend, adjustand embellish outfits to suit them-selves.

“With maturity I’ve found thatvintage dresses rarely suit me offthe rack,” Johnson says.

“I cut them up freely, grafting ondifferent sleeves, stripping offbows or ugly buttons, adding myown cuffs, or using the fabric tomake something else.”

Don’t expect to walk into a vin-tage shop and find a replica of a70s-esque Chloe Mousselineblouse from this season, currentlyon sale for £680.

It’s too much to expect a hemlength or neckline to fit with cur-rent fashions, according to John-son.

“Vintage materials can be aninvitation to reinterpret style. Mixit up. Be bold. Look hard at theway designers play with the con-trast between fabric and cut.”

Top tip: Take the time to figureout which decade highlights yourhottest assets. While the andro-gynous floaty 70s are fab for tall, boyish shapes, the waist-enhan-cing 40s and Mad Men-inspired60s will emphasise a curvy

Burst through the gloom

S pring is here and it’s the perfecttime to give rooms a fast faceliftso they’re ready for brighter

days.“At this time of year it’s easy to feel winter

will never end, especially if our homes arestill dressed in dark colours and heavyfabrics,” says Louise Barltrop from DunelmMill.

“A few simple touches can cheaply andquickly transform your home. Bright pinksare on trend and florals blooming.”

And clearing up the clutter ahead of thatannual ritual – the spring clean – could be agoodexcuse to invest inpretty storage that’sdecorative as well as practical.

“Flowers, fruits and patriotic designs arestrong this season and pretty boxes ad-orned with cherry blossom, strawberries orflags are our most popular,” says SabrinaSandha at interiors specialist, Store TwentyOne.

Just making a few changes can transformrooms, says Kirstie Allsopp, presenter ofChannel 4’s Location, Location, Location.

“I’ve just organised my children’s toys, which had started to take over. Tidyingthem away in new colourful plastic storageboxes has already made the room lookgreat,” she says.

“I also love putting new things up on wallsto give them an inexpensive facelift. I’veframed collections of postcards and eventea towels.

“And as a finishing touch, I’ve got new

table lamps for essential splashes of colourto brighten up dull corners.”

Top tip: Use chalkboard paint on a wall sothe kids can draw on it, or apply magneticprimer and invest in some colourful, mag-netic letters and shapes.

Spring sunlight is a welcome sight andbanishes the gloom, but its bright rays canhighlight dull walls and jaded roomschemes. Even refreshing a feature wallwith paint or paper could be an easy, cheapway to rescue a room.

“Bold florals, statement patterns and vi-brant colours are huge right now,” says NeilMcLennan, deputy editor of Livingetcmagazine.

“Wallpaper collections like Graham &Brown’s tap brilliantly into these keytrends. Modern and easy to live with, thesewallpapers are both confident and assuredwithout being shouty or taking over theroom.”

Top tip: Smarten up wall sockets withscrewless socket covers.

Turning everyday items into planters andvases – from tin cans and milk bottles tomugs and jugs – will make even a smallcollection of fresh flowers eye-catching.

“I love filling pretty vases or jugs withdaffodils at this time of year and dottingthem around the house. It’s simple, givesinstant cheer and doesn’t cost the earth,”says Clare Price, founder of The Contem-porary Home.

Top tip: Bring instant glamourand sparkle to a gloomy roomwith a chandelier, or use clustersof tea lights to add a twinklingglow.

We’re still stuck in winter gloom but clever, inexpensive touchescan give rooms a lift that will raise your spirits. Experts give theirtop tips for room remedies

Cushions are the costume jewellery ofhomes; affordable, an easy way to reflecttrends and brilliant at giving an old sofa orchair a new lease of life.

“At this time of year, when we are tan-talisingly close to the lighter nights andbrighter days, we’re all craving colour,”says Kate Mooney, managing director ofOcca-Home.

“If your taste is demure and you’re notready to experiment with metallics, zingybright colours or pattern – all of whichfeature in this season’s trends – you canincorporate them into your rooms in aliveable way with cushions.”

Top tip: Change door handles or knobs oncupboards to give them a quick lift – ceram-ic and glass details work extremely well.

Plant a stampof approval

I f you’re a regular at garden centres andnurseries, the chances are that at somepoint you’ll have bought a plant which has

received the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Most people see this as a sign that it’s a reliable,

above average specimen which will perform well inthe right conditions. But plants have to go through arigorous process before the coveted logo can beadded to the label.

Only around 34 new plants are trialled each yearand it can take three years upwards before the AGMis awarded, and more for trees or slow-growingplants.

Since being introduced in 1922, more than 7,000plants have received the Award of Garden Merit.New plants are trialled at one of the RHS gardens orat a selected nursery or specialist grower. A panel ofcommittee experts then meets to discuss and assessthe merits of the plants, with input from plantheritage experts and National Collection holders.

“There are five criteria, which are looked at as agroup and not individually,” Jim Gardiner, RHSdirector of horticulture, explains.

“The first one is excellence for ordinary use inappropriate conditions. The next is that the plant isavailable in the trade at some level.”

This means that a widely grown, popular plant, forinstance Lavandula hidcote, would have to be widelyavailable from retailers nationwide to qualify, whilea less popular plant, such as a trillium, should beavailable from appropriate outlets or specialists whogrow that type of woodland garden plant.

The other criteria are that the plant must be ‘ofgood constitution’, which means it is known to behealthy, and ‘essentially stable in form and colour’,performing to its description.

So, if for example you were buying a variegatedplant, it’s not going to revert, says Gardiner.

It’s also got to be reasonably resistant to pests anddiseases.

“For instance, there are some herbaceous plantsthat succumb to mildew when put under stress. What we are saying is that if it gets mildew veryquickly, it won’t be given the Award of GardenMerit.”

Climate will inevitably have some bearing on aplant’s performance. Some plants will do better inwarmer regions in the south than in cooler northernareas.

This is again something the RHS is hoping to tacklewhen it hosts the world’s first international trialsconference at RHS Garden Wisley, in Surrey, inJuly.

“As part of our international trials conference,we’ll be having a debate about hardiness ratings, linked to the Award of Garden Merit,” saysGardiner.

This may mean that in future people will be able tomore easily understand what ratings their plantsfall under at the point of sale.

At present, it’s not compulsory to include hardi-ness ratings on plant labels. Even when growers doinclude the information on the label, the currentrating of one to four is not as clear as it should be,says Gardiner, and the RHS is hoping to extend therating from one to seven.

“Responsible growers are putting the hardinessratings on their labels. If it’s not on the plant tag, itshould be at the point of sale.

“It’s in the growers’ interest to make sure they putit on because, inevitably, the hardiness over the lastfew years has been tested to the limit.”

This year the RHS is carrying out a ‘sunset review’to ensure that the AGM list is up-to-date and thatplants which have been superseded by better vari-eties or are no longer available, are dropped fromthe list.

The new logos will be drip-fed into outlets throughthe year, gradually replacing the old ones.

Logos may change but the aim remains thesame.

“When people go to nurseries or garden centres, ifthey look for the AGM logo they know there’s been ahuge amount of investment, not only in time but inknowledge and expertise, to know they’ll be gettinga first class garden plant,” says Gardiner.
