Newsletter A word from our

Amna Khawaja
Pupils in the school have been
busy this term and have
enjoyed speaking on Radio
Tircoed. We have a new
headmaster, Mr. Millington
who plays the guitar well. We
enjoyed listening to him play in
assembly. There is a new
behaviour scheme which each
class is enjoying as pupils are
rewarded for good behaviour.
We are both proud to have
been chosen to represent the
school as Head Boy and Head
Girl. We’d like to wish the new
Head Boy & Girl our best
wishes for the next term.
The school council is looking forward to putting their
plans into action next half term developing the outdoor
environment. They are going to consider ways in which to
make our school "greener" and "Eco friendly".

St. David’s Day
Comic Relief
Open Day
St. Michael’s School opened its doors in
February to welcome new and existing
families to view the learning in the
classes. Feedback from parents was
exceptional and I’d like to extend my
thanks to those parents who attended.
Our doors are always open and our next
Open Day event takes place in May.
Please come along if you can.
St David’s Day was
celebrated in style on
1st March. Classes had
in house competitions
throughout the day
and parents of
Pre-Prep 1 & 2 were
invited to watch pupils
folk dancing at the
ELC. My thanks go to
the PE staff for all
their hard work in
preparing the pupils
for this
event.
Pupils from the Preparatory School pulled
out all the stops on Friday 13th March in aid
of Comic Relief. The children wore a funny
face for money and we even has a St.
Michael’s School Bake Off. Congratulations
to Vindya Prabhu and Katie Hanson for
winning joint 1st prize.
Many thanks to all who supported by
wearing non-uniform, dressing up, making a
funny face, cake baking, cake sales and
various games. In total, £619.16 was raised
in the Prep School alone.
Pupils raised £72 for the British Heart
Foundation by holding a non-uniform day.

Celebrating Good Behaviour
Celebrating Diverse Faiths
Pupils in the Preparatory
School have shared their
knowledge of faiths during
assembly time this term. It has
been a great opportunity for
public speaking as well as
developing an ethos of respect
and tolerance within the
department. Many thanks to all
the pupils who volunteered to
prepare information. They have
been a pleasure to listen to.
Solar Eclipse
During National Science and Engineering Week,
we were extremely lucky to experience the
solar eclipse via a web link. It was a rare event
and we won’t see a total eclipse again until
2090!
Next term, pupils will see the return of ‘Student
of the Week’ award; one pupil from each Key
Stage will receive this award and be given a
badge to wear for the week. Class rewards will
also be given once pupils fill their jars with
marbles or balls. Which class will be the first to
receive their treat?

Prep 1
It has been another very busy term in the
Nursery and Reception Class where we have
been learning all about 'Castles.' We have had
a lot of fun building and creating castles out
of a wide range of materials - even sugar
cubes! And the highlight of our theme was a
wonderful day at Cardiff Castle.
It’s been another exciting term in Pre-Prep 1
and the children have been busy learning all
about Materials. They have thoroughly enjoyed
exploring the school to find magnetic objects
and testing different materials to see if they
were waterproof. The highlight of our term
was our fantastic day in Techniquest where
they had the opportunity to do lots of
experimenting!
Pre-Prep 2 have had a busy term learning
all about forces and materials, Florence
Nightingale and the country of Mexico.
We have been exploring ‘Purple mash’ on
the computers and we have visited
Techniquest to participate in a Maths
problem-solving workshop. The children
have also thoroughly enjoyed designing
and making their own hand puppets.
The children in Prep 1 entered the mythical
world of monsters and beasts. They designed
several monsters. They had lots of
opportunities to make their monsters come to
life: writing stories, cutting, sewing and even making pneumatic moving monsters!
Another, highlight of the term was the children
learning Welsh songs and performed in the school’s mini Eisteddfod.

Prep 4
Prep 3 have had a busy term learning a
new geography topic - The United
Kingdom. We have looked at capital
cities, mountains and hills, coastlines,
rivers, counties, towns & cities and
famous landmarks. We even had a
digital tour to explore all regions of
our beautiful country.
Prep 2 have had a lovely term and particularly
enjoyed learning about King Henry VIII and his
6 wives. They took a step back to the Stuart
period during their visit to Llancaiach Fawr and
were impressed with the helpers who stayed in
character for the whole day. As well as King
Henry they have also enjoyed travelling the
world during Geography and learning about the
Continents and their features. We look forward
to being transported back to the 70’s next term.
Prep 4 have spent the last week of term at
Morfa Bay in Pendine, West Wales. Whilst
studying the coast as part of the Geography
curriculum, pupils have also had the opportunity
to experience activities such as: mountain biking,
archery, WWI trenches, hiking and so much
more.

PTA
The PTA held a ‘Boden’ clothing party at the ELC. All commission earned will be used to
fund many fun items the school & pupils need. Members of the PTA work extremely
hard to raise much-needed funds and I am always very grateful for their help, support
and dedication. If you are able to give of your time, please come along to the next
meeting. Dates can be found on the school website. www.stmikes.co.uk
As always, the Easter
Disco proved most
popular with the children
enjoying an evening of
dancing, socialising and
many competitions. My
extended thanks go to
Mr. Davey for helping to
organise and coordinate
this PTA annual event.
Easter Bonnet Parade
Egg Decorating
As part of our Easter celebrations, pupils at the ELC
were invited to create an Easter bonnet. Thank you to
everyone who participated. As a treat, an Easter
Treasure hunt was arranged. Prizes were awarded to:
Daniel Gover, Ewan Edwards, Rayaan Naveed & Ashwin
Yoganathan. Pupils in the Prep decorated eggs as
part of our Easter celebrations. 1st
