Happy Spring MDS members

This is a trying time of year for everyone with horses Therersquos snow ice and mud to deal with hair to shed out

blankets to clean and show ponies and horses to unearth from their winter hibernation Those without indoors are

waiting not so patiently to catch sight of their rings Those with indoors are chomping at the bit to get out there and

go somewhere Even though at times spring may seem far away- show season is right around the corner

The first show for MDS is on April 3rd and they just keep coming after that Please make sure to check your omnibus

and wwwmainedressagesocietyorg clinics and shows page for more information In terms of showing at MDS

shows- here are a few reminders

1 When registering for shows itrsquos important that your horses and ponies be up to date on vaccinations and have a

coggins drawn within one year Shows post what is required in their listings in the omnibus Please check that out

before sending in your entry Incomplete entries often mean you donrsquot get accepted to the show

2 When filling out an entry form fill out all the information you can Itrsquos on the form for a reason When you donrsquot

fill it out correctly or completely show managers need to spend time trying to track you down A suggestion would

be to type up your entry and save it on your computer so you just have to fill in show specifics each time you want

to enter

3 If you are hand writing your entry please take the time to make it LEGIBLE Having correct information is very

important

4 Donrsquot forget payment

5 Make sure it is properly addressed to the correct show manager There are a lot of shows out there this year so

make sure it goes where you intend to show )

6 Make sure your entry is sent in well before closing date Shows fill up and you may miss out If the show isnrsquot full

the manager still needs time to process entries get times out etc

7 Donrsquot phone in entries Be prepared Mail it in

8 Dress appropriately Some shows require full dress clothes some donrsquot Either way remember that when you pre-

sent yourself and your horse to a judge you are trying to present the best picture possible Make sure your horse has

a shiny coat looks happy in his work tail is brushed that hersquos at a good weight and that you are tidy and clean

with your hair tucked away and a big smile on your face

9 Spend time memorizing your tests so you donrsquot have to worry about that on show day They are new this year

10 Have fun Remember showing is supposed to be fun Cut yourself and your horse some slack if you have an off

day and just do better next time Look for growth over the season and the positives in each ride

11 If you are new to showing tag along with someone whorsquos done it a bunch Everyone loves company Ask ques-

tions so you feel comfortable with the process No need to add that nervousness to show day

SMDA just confirmed a clinic with Sue Jaccoma on May 7-8 Thatrsquos super exciting to have Sue returning to our

area Please contact SMDA for more information Puckerbrush Farm is holding an adult dressage camp on April 23-

24 More information is on their website

Just a general reminder to make sure your horse registrations and memberships are in before you attend your first

show if you want those scores to count towards year end awards

May 1st we are hosting a riding clinic with Yvonne Coleman-Larson ldquoLrdquo judge at

Wadean Chadwickrsquos farm in Sabattus We look forward to riding with Yvonne

Due to health issues Kelly Moore had to step down as our treasurer we wish Kelly a

speedy recovery and a big thank you for all you have done Please send Suzanne Crowell

any new membership forms as she was voted in as our new treasurer at the last meeting

We will be hosting a scribing and scoring clinic at our next meeting April 9th at Carol

Poulin ndashTaylorrsquos farm Time to be announced We will have riders so the scribes can

practice their techniques and we will be practice scoring their sheets with the guidance of

Elizabeth Owens If you would like to ride for us please contact Carol This is a great

time to learn how to scribe and score before show season

Heather Webster has offered help CMDA set up our own Web site So look for this in the

up coming month More details to follow

Our year end awards banquet was lost of fun this year a big Thank You to Kelley Moore

and Erin Luck for sharing their experience at the World Equestrian Games They had

such a good time and so did we eat and received awards

do back research to sort them out Kitty asked what should be the protocol for checks sent without the late

fee She has contacted some members who have then sent on necessary funds For people who have not re-

sponded she has sent the checksapplications on to Tammy of MDS (who will then return checks to mem-

bers) It was decided that this was appropriate action

III Old Business Omnibus entries were taken care of and it is printed and being distributed Many

thanks were issued to Bryn for setting up the Year-End Awards ceremony

A Shows - Sheila Haggan has volunteered to chair the June 19th show at Peppergrass Farm Chris Joost is

judging Bryn amp Becky will chair the August 7th show at Puckerbrush Carol Poulin-Taylor is judg-

ing Kris Nicola will run the September 18th EMDA benefit show at Stepping Stone Farm Judge is TBA

B Clinics - Bryn presented a possibility of having Marilyn Heath an S judge and head of the L Judge

program as a clinician Marilyn will be judging the Puckerbrush USDF show on July 30-31 and could do

an unmounted lecture on the evening of the 29th or 30th or do a mounted clinic on the 29th or 1st Any rid-

ers competing in that show would not be eligible for riding in the clinic if it was offered on the 29th Bryn

will get prices and then this will be discussed more For the free clinic Bryn suggested having several of the

L program candidates for a clinic where riders could ride a test get feedback and then re-ride the

test Bryn will figure out a day location and number of riderslesson

D MDS - Turnout for the banquet was good with 90-100 members in attendance

V New Business EMDA newsletter will be sent electronically now unless paper copies are specifically re-

quested by individual members on their respective membership forms

A MDS Meeting - Bryn encourages any members to send in farm news or photos and for barns to send in

their show results for the website Newsletters and applications are available on the website and tests will

soon be available

B Newsletter - The newsletter deadline is March 1st

C MDS Website - See above at MDS Meeting

D Omnibus - The Omnibus is out 400 were printed but due to rising costs next year only 300 (+-) will be

printed and will be distributed as supplies last

E New Projects - No new projects were discussed

F Next Board Meeting - The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Monday April 4th 6pm at Betsys

From Both Ends of the Reins

Last Sunday while glancing at ads the New York Times magazine I casually observed that a horse

well-saddled but wearing what must have been a bosal was photo-shopped into the scene It just wasnrsquot

going to be true The headpiece was cropped way to close to be real and no horse in his right mind would

be standing quietly in that situation There was another picture of some movie and it was fairly apparent

that among the arabs galloping across the dessert at least one of the riders was a woman In the behind-the-

scenes shots of Lord of the Rings they explained how most of the riders were women and how although

Gandalf galloped wildly across country with no apparent bridle it just wasnrsquot true

Most people wouldnrsquot notice such detail But your horse does The tiniest consistent shift of weight

from back to front makes an amazing difference To learn a foreign language success results from paying

ever increasing attention to the smallest sound changes that affects meaning Succeeding in dressage is not

much different paying increasing attention to ever smaller changes that affect movement

Please join us in our shows and clinics We have a show season planned ndash we are waiting for you

Congratulations to NMDA Year-End Awards Recipients We hosted the NMDA year-end awards banquet at the Zambranorsquos home on February 4th 2011 it was

a fun event with delicious food amp great company We started with a pot-luck dinner with a show sea-

son slide show We then had a mini show paperwork clinic to review all the different aspects of paper-

work required for club membership show entries amp year-end award forms We had a lot of great ques-

tions and hope all learned what they needed At last we presented the year-end awards

Susan Jaccoma Spring Clinic May 7-8 2011

Southern Maine Dressage Association is pleased to have Susan Jaccoma return to New England for a

Clinic symposium at Spring Creek Farm in Lyman on May 7 amp 8 2011

Susan has been absent from the New England scene after relocating to Wellington Fl where she is busy teaching

and training all levels of horse and riders

Susan has earned many awards in her dressage career including Team and Individual Gold Medals at the 2000

Nations Cup in Sydney Australia numerous Regional Championships at many levels with various horses 2 Pan

Am Selection Trials WEG Selection Trial and National Championships at Gladstone and San Juan Capis-

trano In addition she has been long listed with USET since 1998

She has competed at the international level for over 20 years working with many well known trainers such as Jane

Savoie and Robert Dover We have seen her ride in many clinics with instructors such as Steffen Peters and Klaus

Balkenhaul

She currently trains her 11 year old Hanoverian gelding Wadamur with Lars Peterson After many successes in

Grand Prix their long term goal is the 2012 Olympic Games She has also had many articles published in various

magazines about her training methods

We feel fortunate to have such an accomplished rider come ―home and spend the weekend with us More infor-

Greetings I hope everyone has survived the winter intact and I know that I am very ex-

cited that the weather seems to be warming up a bit WMDEA is gearing up for a busy and

fun filled summershow season Our next meeting is March 20 at 2 pm and will be hosted

by Trish DelVisco As usual we have many WMDEA affiliated shows (scores from those

shows are eligible to count toward WMDEA year end awards) which are hosted by Esprit

Equestrian Center Hidden Brook Farm Look Out Farm and Sunset Farm we hope to see

many of you there

We are also hoping to be able to host an Equestrian Fleamarket this spring and we will be

keeping everyone updated as to the date and other information as we get it all organized

We are also planning a Summer CookoutPool Party for Wednesday July 13 so put it on

your calendar now This event is planned as a fun socializing event for members of all ages

We will have a wine and cheese social hour starting at 5pm and then the cookout and offi-

cial party will start at 6pm This will be held at Trish DelViscorsquos house in Norway and we

hope to see everyone there

Also were hoping to host a clinic with Vicki Hammers-OrsquoNeil on April 16 ndash 17 however

we were unable to find enough participants Instead we are hoping to do a clinic or camp

with Vicki this fall We will keep everyone updated as to dates prices etc but please let

me know if this is something that you are interested in and what you would like to see at the

clinic or camp

judges (min 3 scores total if showing below second level 2 scores at 2nd or above) with the fol-

lowing exception if a rider only qualifies by riding at EMDA shows (not other EMDA pointed

shows) and if EMDA uses the same judge at more than one of its three shows then the rider

will still qualify [However if the rider only rides in only two shows one EMDA show and one

outside show then the rider must still show under two different judges in order to qualify for

Year End Awards]
