“Short telephoto” denotes focal lengths between 50mm and 300mm. These lenses are ideal for a wide range of subject matter, including portraiture and travel photogra-phy. Micro (also referred to as “macro”) lenses enable you to focus on objects that are too close for normal lenses to capture (for example, Nikon’s 105mm f/2.8 Micro lens can focus on subjects as close as 31cm. The longer the focal length of the micro lens, the less physically close you have to be to your subject; this is especially important for sub-jects (like butterflies) that are easily disturbed.

Wide-angle lenses are essential for capturing a large area in a single photograph, such as tight interiors and wide landscapes. They can also be used to create dramatic vi-sual effects, especially when subjects are positioned close to the lens. For the ultimate in versatility, consider a wide-angle zoom like Nikon’s 10-24mm lens, which provides you with ultra-wide to natural fields of view in a single lens.

Standard focal lengths can range anywhere from 24mm to 50mm, depending on the camera used. Lenses like Nikon’s 24-70mm f/2.8 cover the entire range of standard focal lengths, with the addition of a constant f/2.8 aperture that makes for ideal portraiture and low-light photography. Prime lenses consist of a single focal length and a general-ly fast aperture (like the Nikon 50mm f/1.8). They can often be designed for greater image quality than a zoom lens.
