as a very special event. Forme it has always been anemotional get-together, onewhere the generosity of theorganisers and the fondnessof the journalists is reallyevident. I remember the sun,the beach, the castle and theold town’. Assumpta Serna(Barcelona, 1957) is full ofpraise for last year’s event,during which she was awar-ded the ‘Costa de Azahar’Prize in recognition of hercareer here in Spain and,above all, abroad. She is oneof the few Spanish actorswho has worked more inEnglish and French than in Spanish.

She is a devotee of this fes-tival, which will take placein May and is the only oneof its kind. ‘As a professio-nal I am fully aware thatcomedy cinema is one of themost difficult things to dowell. And as a cinema goer

myself, I know that theworkload and responsi-bilities of modern lifecan trap us in a rhythmthat only a smile andlaughter can break’,says the actress, whocannot avoid men-

tioning the TV series ‘Aquíno hay quien viva’, whichhas brought her to Madrid.

She has no doubts as to whyshe would recommend a visitto this festival. ‘What can bemore pleasurable thanattending an event thatmakes you laugh, is veryrelaxing and is always on thelookout to find somethingfunny in everyday situations.This year there is a doubleincentive because the fiftiethanniversary of the release ofthe film ‘Calabuch’ by Ber-langa, one of the comedygeniuses of the 50s, 60s and70s is to be celebrated. Ber-langa’s work marked an eraand the world he createdrevolutionised the way sto-ries were told in Spanishcinema’, she says.

Is comedy in fashion?Comedy will never die outbecause it forms the basis ofthe entire creative process:the pleasure of communica-ting. Comedians are usuallypeople familiar with the painof the human condition,people with a difficult past,who have opted for humourto carry the burden of theirown conflicts with dignity.The fact is that we all usecomedy to exorcise ourrepressed emotions’.

No lack of intensity...Humour is a form of therapyin a society as uncaring asours and Peñíscola ComedyCinema Festival representsa good leisure alternative.

Ella tiene claro por qué recomen-daría asistir a este festival. ‘De porsí, es gratificante asistir a un eventoque te hace reír, sacudir tensionesy buscarle enfoque divertido asituaciones cotidianas. Este añohay un doble aliciente porque seconmemora el cincuenta aniver-sario del estreno de la película‘Calabuch’ de Luis Berlanga, unode los genios de la comedia de losaños 50, 60 y 70. Su cine creóépoca y su universo revolucionóla manera de contar historias en el

cine español. Un festival, comoéste, que articula su programaciónalrededor de un homenaje a Ber-langa es un imprescindible’, dice.

¿Está la comedia en boga?La comedia nunca morirá porquees la base de toda creación: el pla-cer de comunicar. Los humoristassuelen ser personas conocedorasdel dolor humano, con un pasadodifícil, que han optado por elhumor para llevar con dignidad elpeso de sus propios conflictos. Lacomedia nos sirve como exorcismode emociones y deseos reprimidos.

Intensidad no le falta...El humor es una forma de terapiaen una sociedad tan poco huma-nista como la nuestra y Peñíscola,una buena alternativa de ocio.
