DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT AND PLACEMENT TESTING
ACCUPLACER placement testing provides an accurate and timely assessment of a student’s academic proficiency levels, which
help determine the most appropriate courses in English, reading, and math. Therefore, it is very important to prepare before taking
the placement tests.
Test preparation is strongly encouraged. Re-tests are not given unless there are extenuating circumstances. Test preparation
websites can be found on the second page of the testing schedule.
No appointment is needed to take the test during scheduled testing times. The testing schedule can be found by clicking the Testing
Schedule link on the BCC homepage. BCC uses the NC Diagnostic and Placement (NC DAP) test. The NC DAP test is taken via
computer and contains four assessments (WritePlacer Essay, Reading, Revising/Editing, and Math). With the exception of the
WritePlacer essay, each placement test section is untimed, allowing you to relax, concentrate, and take as much time as you
need. Breaks are allowed during the test. The WritePlacer is timed for two hours. The average testing time for all four sections is 3
hours, so please plan accordingly.
All new curriculum students must test unless you meet the following criteria:
have college level math & English courses, with grades of “C” or better in both.
have achieved the following minimum scores within the last 5 years:
SAT Reading or Writing – 500; SAT Math – 500 OR
have achieved ACT Reading – 22; ACT English – 18; or ACT Math – 22.
have submitted an official copy of test scores to the Admissions Office.
have graduated from a NC high school within 5 years with an un-weighted GPA of 2.6 or higher.
have successfully completed an approved 4th level mathematics course.
No waivers can be granted until official transcripts have been received and evaluated by the Admissions Office.
You cannot fail this test. It is not a pass or fail test. Your test scores will help you build a solid foundation for success while attending
BCC.
A photo ID and your BCC student number are required to take the test. Your student number can be found in the Welcome/Missing
Items letter sent from the Admissions Office.
Calculators are not allowed on the test. Pen and paper are provided. Some questions provide a computer calculator that can be
used for those questions only. All problems on the test can be solved without a calculator. All placement test scores are valid for five
years.

Tutoring Services
The Learning Enhancement Center, Building 8, provides tutoring services for most courses of study.
Help is always available. Simply visit the center and schedule your sessions.
The LEC is always searching for qualified
students to tutor other students. If this interests you, come by the center to see if you meet the standards to provide tutoring.

EARN COLLEGE CREDITS WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL
Authorized by the North Carolina General Assembly in 2011, Career and College Promise is a program designed to allow
qualified high school students to earn college credits (and a possible certificate) while in high school. Bladen County Schools
and BCC have formed a partnership to offer two major pathways to students in the 11th and 12th grade with the College Transfer
Pathways and the Career and Technical Education Pathways. Three pathways are offered under College Transfer and six under
Career and Technical Education. Enrolled students are not required to pay tuition or fees for courses in their approved pathway;
however, college transfer students must purchase their textbooks.
COLLEGE TRANSFER PATHWAYS: Fourteen courses will be offered at East Bladen and West Bladen in these pathways via
interactive TV each school year. These courses will also be available on campus at BCC. Pathway One is the Associate in Arts
Degree. It is an 11-course program that leads to 32-41 transferrable hours of college credit. Courses are all part of the general
studies required at all four-year institutions during the first two years of college study leading into many possible major study
areas. Pathway Two is an Associate in Science Degree. This pathway is an 11-course program that leads to 35-43 transferrable
hours of college credit. Pathway Three is an Associate in General Education Nursing. This pathway is an 8-course program
that leads to 24 transferrable hours of college credit. Courses are generally part of the general studies required at all four-year
institutions with an emphasis on sciences and mathematics.
CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION PATHWAYS: The Career and Technical Education Pathways are designed for high
school juniors and seniors who wish to gain college instruction in technical areas while still in high school. The Electrical,
Machining and Welding pathways lead to a certificate in the program of study. The Emergency Medical Science pathway leads
to an EMT Basic Certification. The six pathways are: Carpentry, Cosmetology, Electrical Systems Technology, Emergency
Medical Science, Machining and Welding. Carpentry, Cosmetology, Electrical Systems Technology and Welding are broken
into two levels—one for the junior year and one for the senior year.

DISTANCE LEARNING - “EDUCATION AT THE SPEED OF LIFE”
In an effort to make a college degree possible for all who desire one, BCC offers several full degree programs through distance
learning. Currently offered as fully distance learning programs are College Transfer (AA & AS), Business Administration, Early
Childhood Education, Computer Information Systems Technology, Office Administration, Medical Office Administration, and
General Education. Criminal Justice is offered in the hybrid format.
Distance courses enable students with families, jobs, and other responsibilities to pursue college credits and degrees. They
include all courses in which students and teachers are in different locations for all or part of the course, and have the same
admission, registration, attendance, and academic requirements as on-campus classes.
Section designations on the course schedules indicate the mode of delivery. OL is online, IH is interactive television, H is hybrid (a combination of face-to-face student and instructor interaction and some other form of delivery), and WA is web-assisted (a combination of face-to-face student and instructor interaction with supplemental online materials).
Distance Learning courses and programs are fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and are approved by the United States Distance Learning Association. BCC participates in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements. This assures that students receive a quality education.

CLASSES AVAILABLE THROUGH COLLABORATION WITH OTHER COLLEGES
BCC offers students 2+2 and concurrent enrollment programs in conjunction with Fayetteville State University,
University of North Carolina –Pembroke, NC Wesleyan College, and Fayetteville Technical Community College. The
agreements with these institutions offer students the opportunity to complete four-year degrees aligned with their two-
year programs at BCC. Concurrent enrollment programs build GPAs at both institutions and all classes are counted
toward graduation requirements. The application fee for four-year institutions is waived for concurrent enrollment
programs. To enroll in these programs, students must apply, provide transcripts for, and meet all date deadlines for
both institutions. Advisement for concurrent enrollment programs is essential.
COLLEGE TRANSFER INFORMATION
The North Carolina Community College System and the University of North Carolina System have developed a Comprehensive Articulation Agreement which greatly improves the transfer process between community colleges and universities. Courses are approved for transfer throughout the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement. Community college graduates of Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degree programs who have earned 60 semester hours of academic credit in approved transfer courses with a grade of “C” or better in each course and an overall GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale will receive 60 semester hours of academic credit upon admission to a university. Mechatronics Engineering
Technology Robotics – Automation
Mechatronics, which is also called
mechatronic engineering, is a
multidisciplinary branch of engineering that
focuses on the engineering of both electrical
and mechanical systems, and also includes a
combination of robotics, automation,
electronics, computer,
telecommunications, systems control, and
product engineering. Mechatronic
Engineering combines the fundamentals of
Mechanical, Electrical and Computer
Science to develop autonomous systems. A
Mechatronic Engineer designs smart
machines and systems that are aware of their
environment, and can process information to
make decisions. Mechatronics is a broad
career field that encompasses Robotics,
Automation, Computer Simulations,
Engineering Design, and Control Systems
through advanced technology.
