  • What is flowering in some glass-houses

Last week Garrie and I were lucky enough to visit Bruce Wood on the central coast, and have a look at what was flowering in his glasshouse. Bruce’s glasshouse gets excellent light on two sides and medium light on the two sides near the fences. He manages to place his plants well so that they are able to flower without encroaching on the plants next to them and under his benches are lots of foliage plants providing good humidity. Bruce does have plants hanging as well as some mounted on mesh along the walls. His watering and fertilising regime is producing plants that look sturdy and healthy and flower regularly. Below were some of the orchids in flower while we were there.

    Cattleya Dendi's Perfection 'Lakehaven'

    Cattleya Fire Magic

    Rth. Love Sound ‘Dogashima’

    Cattleya Orchid Affair ‘Flirt’

Rth Rosella Tokyo x Rlc Lisa Taylor Gallis

Thank you Bruce for allowing us to come, see, and photograph your orchids …………………………………………Lesley

  • Changes to our glasshouse

Our glasshouse is a typical glass-house with benches for plants, fans and a heater to use in winter. The floor of our glass-house is covered with small pebbles to help retain moisture and boost the humidity. The only problem is that we both wear sneakers which have grooves on the sole, and we are constantly walking pebbles out of the glass-house and into the house. After visiting a fellow orchid grower who had the same problem we decided to try his solution. With the purchase of quite a few rubber tiles which have perforations in them, we joined them up and laid them on the main paths in the glass-house. The tiles we used were from Clark Rubber as Bunnings were waiting for a supply to arrive from China. These tiles are approximately 60mm square with a patterned edge that joins the next tile. We have since found out that while you can buy cheaper tiles be warned some of the cheaper tiles are slippery when wet, while the ones from Clark Rubber are not, as they are designed to be used where there is water. They are also soft enough to cut with normal scissors if they do not fit perfectly. Another feature we have found is that we can now kneel in the glass-house if we want to work on plants that are on the lower bench and no longer have to carry our kneeling pads around with us. The photos below show the new rubber tiles. There is a limited choice of colours but we don’t think the orchids mind.

Vale Francois Devos Last month North Shore lost one of its gentlest members Francois Devos. Francois and his partner Robyn have not been able to attend meetings before the Covid crisis started due Francois failing health. Our deepest sympathy goes to Robyn and the family.
