Panthers return all but one from2012 District championship teamBy CHRIS HOPPESSports Editor

The Miami TracePanthers baseball teamaccomplished somethinglast season that no MTbaseball team had sinceJohn F. Kennedy was presi-dent.That is, they won the

program’s second Districtchampionship in 50 years.The Panthers took a 7-10

record into the postseason.Going, at least primarily

by record, the Pantherswere given the No. 7 seedand probably an ice creamcone’s chance of not melt-

ing before being eaten on ahot July afternoon. The Panthers made the

trip way over to NewLexington to get the tourna-ment underway andpromptly run-ruled the No.2 seed, 14-0.Waverly, the No. 3 seed,

advanced with a 6-4 homewin over Marietta. The Panthers met the

Waverly Tigers in theDistrict semifinals at PaintStadium in Chillicothe andupset the Tigers, 3-2 ineight innings.Next, the Panthers made

the trip back down US 35for the District champi-

onship two days later. It was 9-10 Miami Trace

against the No. 1 seedGallia Academy, boastingquite rightly of a 21-6mark.Well, you already know

how that turned out, a 4-2win by the Panthers (ineight innings) for a memo-rable 3-0 start to the play-offs.Unfortunately, it ended

quite abruptly with a 12-0loss to Millersburg WestHolmes in the Regionalsemifinals in Zanesville.West Holmes won the

Regional title, 3-1 overRichmond Edison.West Holmes then lost

in the State semifinals toWapakoneta, 3-2.Wapakoneta then lost, 3-2in the State championshipgame to Columbus SaintFrancis DeSales.Chris Miller is back for

his sixth season as headcoach of the Panthers.Miami Trace placed

third in the SCOL last yearwith a record of 8-4.Hillsboro was second at 9-3 and London won theleague with a mark of 10-2.“It was a tight league

race last year,” Miller said.“As the season wore on,

we felt we were gettingmuch better, defensively,”Miller said. “We were veryyoung at the start of lastseason. We had graduatedeight seniors the yearbefore, so we were filling alot of spots. We had somekids in some spots thatweren’t quite ready and wetook some lumps.“It was tough on them,

mentally, at the beginningof the year,” Miller said.“As the season progressed, they started to have a littlemore confidence in them-

selves. By the time thetournament rolled around,we were very confident inour abilities defensivelyand on the mound.“Our pitchers had dras-

tically improved over thecourse of the season,”Miller said. “They werethrowing a lot of strikes. We were doing a nice jobbehind them making plays. In the District semifinalsand finals, we were fortu-nate to make some bigplays when they counted. When we did commit anerror, someone would stepup behind them; whether itwas a pitcher really bearingdown and battling, orsomeone out in the fieldmaking a play. And we hadtimely hitting. We strug-gled offensively all season. We weren’t the kind ofteam that was going toscore 7, 8 or 9 runs, nor arewe likely to be that teamthis year.“We were able to manu-

facture (runs) in very criti-cal situations,” Miller said.“We were able to get somebunts down; we were ableto do some situational hit-ting; we were able to moverunners and do the thingswe talk about. At the plate,we did a nice job of mov-ing runners over and get-ting that big hit with one ortwo outs. Just playing, sound, fundamental base-ball; playing the game theway it’s supposed to beplayed.“Fortunately for us, we

did have luck on our side acouple of times,” Millersaid. “But, I felt we earnedthat throughout the year.We continued to get better;the kids continued to workhard and they deservedeverything they accom-

plished.“When we started, no

Miami Trace team had wonthe league since the1980s,” Miller said. “AndCourt House had that runof however many SCOLchampionships they hadwhen the league got backtogether.“We weren’t able to win

the league last year, but, when we won thatSectional championship,we were able to say, ‘hey,it’s the first time since 2005that happened,’” Millersaid. “As we prepared forthe District tournament, wesaid, ‘hey, let’s make aname for yourselves. It’sbeen since 1962. You canleave your legacy andenjoy the moment and takethe opportunity that is herein front of you. You’re at agreat facility (the VA),you’re with your friends. You may only be here thisone time. Relish the oppor-tunity and give it every-thing. When you leave thefield, win or lose, you wantto feel you played to thebest of your abilities andyou left nothing behind.”Miami Trace is in a

unique position of comingoff a District championshipseason and returning 13 ofthe 14 players from thatteam.Only Zack Anderson

graduated in 2012.“We’re going to miss

Zack and the leadership hegave,” Miller said. “Zackwas very team-oriented. Hewas always interested inwhat is best for the team.He even gave up his spot inthe lineup when he wasn’thitting very well. Not many18-year-old young menwould do that. That made ithard for anyone to com-

plain about anything afterthat.“We have a very solid

foundation,” Miller said.“We feel we can be compet-itive this year. We feel wecan accomplish somethingwe didn’t last year, whichwas to win the league.“Playing well in the tour-

nament; you can never pre-dict that you’re going tohave as much success asyou did the year before,”Miller said. “Our district isgoing to be very toughagain this year. We hope wecan go out and play to thebest of our abilitiesthroughout the season. Then, if that continues intothe tournament, it’s going tohappen the way it happens. We have to continue to getbetter, day by day. We haveto focus on and do thethings correctly that we’resupposed to do.“We had two seasons last

year,” Miller said. “Wewent 9-11 during the sea-son, then we went 3-1 in thetournament. So, which teamare we? We could very eas-ily be the 9-11 team if wedon’t do things fundamen-tally sound and correctly. Ithink we have a strong lead-ership with the seniors thatwe have coming back. Theywant to leave their lastingimpression on this baseballprogram; they want to makesure this year is not a disap-pointment in their minds.“Our goal is to win the

league and get the best seedpossible for the tourna-ment,” Miller said. “As wesaw last year, we were theNo. 7 seed and anything canhappen.”Miami Trace pitching

staff will include seniors

Hillsboro was second andMiami Trace was third.Clinton-Massie was sev-

“We were seeded in themiddle of the pack,” Plattsaid.Washington lost to

Cassidy and Josh Williams.“They made an impact

last year and we’re hopingfor more of the same thisyear,” Platt said.“There are a lot of open

positions, which has madefor some great competitionon this team,” Platt said.“Competition raises a play-er’s ability; shows you whatthey can do.“I’m looking forward

to seeing where the piecesmight fall,” Platt said. “Ilove our team chemistry. Ireally hope it translates tothe field, because it’s real-ly fun to come to practiceevery night. This time ofyear, when you’re lookingto get outside and play, being inside can get prettyold. These guys have anenergy that is making forsome exciting practices.“In baseball, a lot

depends on how a teammeshes and how it plays asa team,” Platt said. “I thinkwe’ll be right in the mixnear the top of the SCOL.That’s always our goal. Ithink we have a very goodchance of achieving thatgoal this year.”The Blue Lions will have

three seniors on this year’steam: David Harvey, TrevorBain and Derek Shaw.Harvey will play either

second base or left field, according to Platt. Bain willplay second base and Shawis the team’s third baseman. It will be the third year

on the team: Matt Jones, leftfield, and one freshman,Cole Massie first base.

Junior Austin Skaggswill pitch for the j-v team, according to Platt.Massie and Slone are in

the running for the firstbaseman’s position, accord-ing to Platt.Harvey and Duncan will

be the catchers, Platt noted.“Harvey will also see

some time in the outfield,”Platt said.Seniors Bain and Shaw

are pretty-well penciled inat second and third, respec-tively, Platt noted.Travis Leisure had the

early nod for the centerfieldspot, according to Platt.Wissinger looks to start

in right field, according toPlatt. Alec Sparkman, also aright fielder, was injured(see above).Left field will see a pla-

toon between Harvey andJones, Platt said.“Miami Trace is return-

ing a lot of players,” Plattsaid. “They’re definitely aveteran team.“I know that Hillsboro

lost some older, key guys,”Platt said.“I’m very confident in

what we have,” Platt said. “Ifeel very strongly about theguys we have.“Madison Plains has a

couple of good, left-handedpitchers,” Platt said. “RyneDavis will be back. He’s avery consistent, athleticplayer. And Nick Garrettreturns, as well.”The Blue Lions are play-

Miami Trace hopes to reachthe top of the SCOL in 2013By CHRIS HOPPESSports Editor

Terry Smith returns forhis 13th overall season asMiami Trace head softballcoach. The McClain Tigers won

the league last year, going12-0 in the SCOL.Miami Trace finished

second with a record of 8-4.The Lady Panthers had

to travel to New Lexingtonfor the first game of thetournament, which was aloss, ending their seasonwith a record of 13-13.Miami Trace graduated

three seniors last year, including four-year starter,Tiarra Perkins, who was oneof three Panthers namedFirst Team, All-SCOL for2012 (along with then soph-omore Ariana Mabra andthen junior Nivea Wilson).Perkins was also namedFirst Team, All-District.Charlotte Morris (center

field) and Danielle Thomas(first base) were the team’sother seniors last year.“We were really strong,

defensively last year,”Smith said. “We will beagain this year. Any ballthat was hit over secondbase, Charlotte came inand caught it, or Tiarrawent back and caught it.We’re losing a comfortzone, losing those two.And Danielle improved somuch last year on defense. All three of them will behard to replace.“NiveaWilson was prob-

ably our No. 1 pitcher lastyear,” Smith said. “But, Ineed her in centerfield. Shewill still get to pitch some, but, I’m hoping BrookeMcConahy (junior), whostarted out last year strongfor us, can take that role.”Another pitcher,

McKenzie Robinson(sophomore), will see a lotof time on the mound,Smith said.SeniorCarly Strayer returns

for her third year as the startingcatcher forMiami Trace.“She’ll help the pitchers

out a lot,” Smith said.“Carly will be strong backthere. She hit .300 last year, but we’re hoping she bringsback a little of the powershe showed at the plate ear-lier in her career.”Sydney Grooms will be

the back-up catcher, Smithsaid. Grooms will movefrom right field to shortstop, according to Smith.“Sydney probably has

one of the strongest arms inthe league,” Smith said.“She threw out several run-ners at the plate last yearfrom right field. She can

play several positions forus.”Megan Self (freshman)

will back-up at short, according to Smith.Bridget Leisure (senior)

may get the nod to start atfirst base. “If she’s not atfirst, she’ll definitely be ourdesignated hitter,” Smithsaid.Another senior, Barb

Sears, is vying for playingtime at first base, Smithnoted.Erika Riley (senior) is

penciled in at second base.“She plays great defense,”Smith said.Junior Ariana Mabra,

solid both offensively anddefensively, is ready to go atthird base.“She’s a great softball

player,” Smith said. “This isher third year on varsity.”Mabra was First Team, All-SCOL and First Team, All-District in 2012.Junior Tessa Grooms

will start in left field, according to Smith.“She has tremendous

speed,” Smith said. “Herhitting has improved.”With Grooms, Wilson,

Sydney Landrum or MeganSelf in the outfield, Smith feelsMiami Trace will have thefastest outfield in the SCOL.To start the season,

Miami Trace will have sixseniors, five juniors, twosophomores and one fresh-man on the varsity roster, according to Smith.Payton Price (junior)

will back-up at second base, according to Smith. “She’sa very good hitter,” Smithsaid.Taylor Kirkpatrick

(sophomore) is a back-upinfielder and pinch-runner.Players that could move

up (on occasion) from the j-v to the varsity include:Tasha Fox (freshman),Autumn Self (sophomore)and Alexis Schwartz (fresh-man), according to Smith.Smith turned his

thoughts to the SCOL for2013.“We finished second last

year and we have a lot com-ing back,” Smith said. “Thethree we lost were extreme-ly talented and we’re goingto miss them.“Everyone’s about in the

same boat,” Smith said.“McClain lost several tograduation. They haveCierra Landrum back topitch. Shania Massie isback. She hit nine homeruns last year and had neverplayed the game before.“(McClain’s) who

you’ve got to beat,” Smithsaid. “They’ve won theleague the last two years

and we’ve struggledagainst them the last twoyears. Two years ago, thegame’s were close. Lastyear, we just didn’t playwell against them and theyplayed extremely well.“Clinton-Massie, they

have some good players,”Smith said. The LadyFalcons placed third in theleague at 7-5 in 2012.“They’re going to be strongagain this year.”The Washington Lady

Blue Lions placed fourth inthe league at 6-6 last year.“Sara (Lentz) against us,

she’s just dynamite,” Smithsaid. “She’s pitched so wellagainst us over the years. We lost a close one in attheir place and we beatthem out here in an excitinggame. Of course, what shedid against McClain in theSectional last year.(Washington) was one outaway from beating them

and (McClain) was the topseed.“But, they graduated

Katie DePugh, who’s beentheir starting catcher for thelast four years,” Smith said.“London has an

extremely-talented pitch-er,” Smith said. “She was afreshman last year. LaurenMiller, her travel team lastyear went 30-somethingand 3 or 4. When she pitch-es, they have a chance towin every game. They losta lot of kids, but, if theycan play defense behind(Miller), they’re going tobe tough.” London went 1-11 last year in the SCOL.This will be London and

Madison Plains’ last year inthe SCOL.Plains placed fifth in the

league at 5-7 in 2012.“I don’t know how

they’re going to be,” Smithsaid of Madison Plains.“This will be East

Clinton’s first year in theleague,” Smith said. “Theykind of got beat around bysome of the teams in theleague last year. I thinkthey’ll be improved.”Chillicothe will be join-

ing the SCOL in August of2013.Miami Trace will host

the Cavs in a double-head-er on March 30.

Assistant coaches areCarl Strayer, varsity assis-tant; Tim Leisure, varsityassistant; Chad Strahlerwill be j-v head coach;Brian Knowles will assistStrahler.Miami Trace has 37 girls

involved in seventh andeighth grade softball.Knowles and Joe Henry willcoach the junior high teams.

Ariana Mabra scores a run for Miami Trace during the game with London March 28, 2012. This was the firstgame played on Miami Trace’s new field.

Lady Lions in the mix forSCOL challenge in 2013By CHRIS HOPPESSports Editor

Washington Lady Lion Kristen Hayes fields the ball atsecond base during a game at Miami Trace April 27,2012.

Rick Foose returns for his11th season as head coach ofthe Washington Lady BlueLion softball team.

For the last couple ofyears, the McClain LadyTigers have been the teamto beat in the South CentralOhio League.

Washington nearlypulled the upset of the sea-son in last season’sSectional championshipgame at Mitchell Parkagainst McClain.

Washington was leading,1-0, going into the seventhinning, but, with one out inthe bottom of the seventh,McClain scored two runswithout benefit of a hit totake the 2-1 victory.

McClain was ranked No.10 in the State in Division IIlast year by the coaches. The Lady Tigers lost toGallia Academy, 3-1 in theDistrict semifinals. FairfieldUnion later defeated GalliaAcademy, 2-1 to win theDistrict championship.

With their leading hitter,Shania Massie and startingpitcher, Cierra Landrum, returning, McClain is thepick to win the league for athird year in a row.

Washington graduatedthree seniors in four-yearstarting catcher, KatieDepugh, shortstop TaylorShears and Cori Greer.

“Katie received SecondTeam,All-District recognitionlast year,” Foose said. “She’sgoing to be tough to replace.

“Taylor was also a four-year letter-winner,” Foosesaid. “She’ll also be tough toreplace. She was originallyan outfielder for us, but sheplayed shortstop the pastthree years.” Shears wasnamed Honorable Mention,All-District in 2012.

Greer played two yearson varsity for the LadyLions.

“We’re losing a lot ofexperience at catcher andshortstop,” Foose said.“Those are key positions, defensively.”

Washington still has vet-eran leadership returning infour-year starting pitcher,Sara Lentz and four-yearinfielder, Kristen Hayes.

“When Sara is not pitch-ing, she’ll be playing firstbase,” Foose said. “It’s niceto have a lefty at first base. She does a nice job, defen-sively, when she’s at first.”

Lentz led the team inbatting average (.360) andRBI (22) last season. Herpitching record last yearwas 8-10.

“Kristen is our secondbaseman,” Foose said.“She’s played there the last

three years. She’s comfort-able there. We might moveher to leadoff in our battingorder. Taylor was our lead-off batter the last two years.I think Kristen is lookingforward to that.”

Hayes batted .286 lastseason.

Another senior isAutumn Callender, in herthird year on varsity. Shemay be behind the plate orin the outfield, according toFoose.

“We used her as a desig-nated player last year, because of her ability tohit,” Foose said.

Senior Victoria Vernon isin her third year on varsity.

“Similar to Autumn,Victoria is battling for timebehind the plate,” Foose said.“Last year she started a lotfor us in right field, becauseshe has a strong arm.

“This is (senior)Courtney Harrington’s thirdyear on varsity,” Foose said.“Courtney is a utility player. She’s looking to earn someplaying time at third orshort and back-up Kristen atsecond base.”

The sixth senior on theteam this season is KatelynBoyd.

“Katelyn shares similarpositions with Courtney, asfar as the infield is con-cerned,” Foose said. “Thisis her first year of playingsoftball for us.”

Washington has four jun-iors on the team: AndreaCallender, Brianna Wilson,Mykalley Detty andChelsea Warning.

“This is Chelsea’s thirdyear on the varsity,” Foosesaid. “She’ll be starting inone of the outfield posi-tions. In previous years,we’ve kind of had an idea of

who was going to playwhere in the outfield. Thisyear, we really haven’t beenable to get outside to prac-tice. Last year, Chelsea sawa lot of time in centerfield.

“The coaches have beenimpressed with the progressof Chelsea’s hitting,” Foosesaid.

“Andrea is in her secondyear on the varsity,” Foosesaid. “Last year, Andrea gotto pitch in 12 varsity gameslast year. Andrea had abouthalf as many at bats as someof our other players, but shegave a good showing in theat bats she did get. We’rehoping she’ll help make upfor some of what we’ll bemissing from last year.”

Mykalley Detty is in hersecond year on varsity forthe Lady Lions.

Detty is primarily anoutfielder, according toFoose.

“She had limited playingtime last year,” Foose said.“We’re hoping that she cantake on a larger role on thisyear’s team.”

Wendy Hawk, a fresh-man, is competing for play-ing time at short or thirdbase, according to Foose.

“Wendy has a strongthrowing arm and hits theball with power,” Foosesaid.

There will be some play-ers mentioned in this articlethat might play more on thejunior-varsity team, or splittime in some measure, according to Foose.

Brianna Wilson (junior, outfielder), BrooklynWilson (freshman, catcher),Kate Jude (freshman, pitch-er, first base); Kaylee Noel(sophomore, shortstop, third base); JaycieMcRoberts (freshman, out-fielder, catcher); KatelinAlthouse (sophomore, out-fielder, pitcher, secondbase) are among those at thestart of the season.

“It’s just really too earlyto tell,” Foose said. (CoachFoose was interviewed bythe Record-Herald onMarch 20.)

“We haven’t had achance to get outsidemuch,” Foose said. “Thereare a lot of games scheduledwhere our opponent doesnot have a j-v team, so,we’ll be taking 16 to thosegames. If those six playersaren’t getting significant

playing time with the varsi-ty, then we want to makesure they are getting expe-rience on the j-v team.”

Madison Plains, Uniotoand Clark Southeastern are afew of the teams onWashington’s schedule thatare not fielding j-v teams thisyear, according to Foose.

What about the SCOLfor 2013?

“I know McClain gradu-ated a number of seniors,”Foose said. “But, it alwayshelps to have your pitcherreturning. They will defi-nitely be a team that willonce again contend for thetop of the league.

“I think itwill be a compet-itive league this year,” Foosesaid. “A number of teams havekey players returning.

“I think both FayetteCounty schools could makesome noise and finish nearthe top, as well,” Foosesaid. “Both us and MiamiTrace have enough veteransback that we could make achallenge, as well.”

Clinton-Massie placedthird in the league last year.

They graduated their toppitcher, Lacy Myers, butreturn First Team, All-SCOL player, BrittanySmith.

“The Smith girl is anexcellent athlete,” Foosesaid. “I think they had herat shortstop most of thetime. She’s quick and shehits the ball well.”

East Clinton is now amember of the league andwill be playing their firstseason of softball in theSCOL.

“We played East Clintonlast year and I believe theybeat us at their place,”Foose said. “That’s a teamthat could come in andshake things up and evenchallenge for the title. Theyshould have a lot of playersback. I know we’re losingLondon and MadisonPlains, but, East Clinton isa good pickup for theleague. They’ve got a com-petitive softball squad.”

The Washington LadyBlue Lion track team hasbeen riding a wave of suc-cess to the tune of threeconsecutive South CentralOhio League champi-onships.Under the direction of

Louis Reid, entering hisninth year as head coach, the Lady Lions have severalkey contributors returningthat, despite graduatingthree State qualifiers(Logan Rowe, JessicaGuyette and Carly Laswell)figure to keep Washingtonat or very near the top of theleague.“This run we’ve been on

has been due to our greatsenior leadership,” Reidsaid. “We’ve been able toscore points in just aboutevery event. We’ve scoredreally high in the fieldevents, the relays and thesprints.“We’ve got to find a way

to replace a lot of the pointswe’ve lost,” Reid said. “Wegraduated a two-time Stateplacer in Jessica Guyett.”Guyette was eighth at

State in 2012 in the discusthrow and fourth at State in

2011 in the shot put.Guyette is now a mem-

ber of the Division I RobertMorris women’s track andfield team.Logan Rowe won the

State high jump title in2011. She was a rare three-time Regional high jumpchampion. Last year atState, Rowe placed tied for14th.Laswell, along with

returners Kailyn Romineand Ashley Lovett (nowseniors) and MorganHarper (now a sophomore)qualified to State in the 4 x100-meter relay, placing11th.“We’ve got to replace

some solid seniors,” Reidsaid. “Maggie McDonaldin the hurdles is another.“We have some young

girls and some seniors whoare back that we expect tocontinue the tradition,”Reid said. “Our theme thisyear is ‘tradition’. We havea rich tradition in girls BlueLion track.“We have four girls back

that qualified to State lastyear in Kailyn Romine,Ashley Lovett, HannahSmallwood and MorganHarper,” Reid said.“We got scorers com-

ing back,” Reid said. “ToriMerritt (a junior) was aRegional qualifier in thehigh jump. She was usual-ly right behind Logan inmeets. In fact, she beather a couple of times. We’re ready for her to stepup.“Kailyn Romine will

compete in the 100-meterhurdles and some in the300-meter hurdles,” Reidsaid. “We expect ourrelays, especially the 4 x100 and 4 x 200, to bestrong.“We got some young

kids that I think will step upand help out,” Reid said.“We return a strong dis-

tance crew with SamiNelson, Madison Benderand Paige McRoberts,”Reid said. “Adrienne Perrillwas an alternate on our 4 x200 team. She helped getthem to Regionals.“We’ve got lots of expe-

rience back,” Reid said.“Molly Richards is back (asophomore) and RebeccaButterbaugh in the middledistances. We have a stronggroup of runners, jumpersand throwers back.“Emily Bath (junior) is

back,” Reid said. “She wasthird at league in the pole

vault.” Senior Christy Smithreturns in the pole vault andlong jump.“We return a solid team,”

Reid said. “I’m pretty excit-ed about this season. We’llgo as far as our seniors takeus. It’s really up to them tohelp guide this young team. We’ve lost some big pointsand it’s time for some otherpeople to step up and shinefor us.”Maria Wilson in high

jump and hurdles, MeganMullins, long jump;MaKenzie Harding; HollyInskeep, sprints; CassieHart; Haley Petit in the hur-dles; Elizabeth Jones andMallorie Garrett in thethrows were some of theyounger student-athletesReid hopes can step up andbegin their varsity careersby contributing points to theteam.“Elizabeth and Mallorie

threw well last year in jun-ior high,” Reid said.“Emma Anderson

(sophomore) finished theyear strong for us,” Reidsaid. “She ran some prettygood times in the 1600-meters at the end of the sea-son.“Freshmen Alexis Gray

and Kirsten List had greatcareers in junior high inthe distance races,” Reidsaid. “We’re looking forthem to help contributeright away.“We’re right around 31

girls right now,” Reid said.“So, our numbers are good. When you have a lot ofdepth, we can get differentlooks from our team andfind out who’s going to bestwork in each event so thatwe can score the mostpoints possible.“We have a goal of win-

ning the league title again,”Reid said. “We’d like to wina District title. Last year wewere third at Districts.”Washington won theDistrict title in 2011.“Hillsboro improved a

lot,” Reid said. “AndLondon. They will be twoof the top teams.“Miami Trace usually

has a strong team,” Reidsaid. “Clinton-Massie isalways strong. I’m not sure

what East Clinton willbring.“Madison Plains has a

strong sprinter,” Reid said.“McClain has a sprinterback and a couple of goodhurdlers.“The league is going to

be competitive,” Reid said.“I’d say it’s up in the air.Last year it was a three-way battle between us andLondon and Hillsboro.”Washington begins the

season as they have for sev-eral years taking part in theFair Weather Relays atChillicothe, a school thatwill join the SCOL inAugust of 2013.“Chillicothe has a strong

team,” Reid said. “Theyhave a young lady, MeganOsborne, who recentlysigned with Penn State. She’s placed every year inthe Division I State trackmeet. She runs an 11.9 inthe 100-meter dash. Theirprogram is strong.“The highest we’ve

placed there since I’vebeen here is third,” Reidsaid. “Gallia Academy isthere and they always senda number of runners to

a versatile athlete,” Noessaid. “I expect this year’s

seniors to step up and pro-vide that same type of lead-ership and show theyounger athletes what isexpected.“Our number one goal

remains the same everyyear; for each girl to com-pete against herself,” Noessaid. “Each day, theyshould focus on self-improvement.“I constantly stress to

the girls that they do notneed to be concerned aboutthe person in the lane nextto them,” Noes said. “Orthe person who throws orjumps in front of or behindthem. If they continue tosee self-improvement, pos-itive things will happen.“It is very encouraging

for these young athletes tosee themselves becomesuccessful through theirhard work and dedication,”Noes said.Noes provided a list of

questions that need to beanswered and a lot of

improvements to make,”Noes said. “Overall, I ampleased with what we haveseen thus far.“We are all getting anx-

ious to get outside once theweather starts to cooperate,”Noes said. “But the girlshave been working hard anddoing what is asked ofthem.“I am thankful to have a

group of young athleteswho are willing to workhard and put forth the timeand effort that is needed tobe successful,” Noe said.Noes gave some

up to that history.Washington was down

in the SCOL rankings in2011, but made the leap allthe way to a second placefinish last season. The Hillsboro Indians

captured their first SCOLtrack title in 33 years, win-ning the 2012 championship. The Blue Lions had

some key contributors, leaders in fact, graduatelast year.

Laike Wallace was aRegional champion in the300-meter hurdles andplaced fourth at State in thefinals in a time of 39.78.Wallace is enrolled at

Wittenberg University andis a member of the trackteam.During his first indoor

track season, Wallace tooka second place finish in the60-meter hurdles at theDefiance Invitational.

Wallace won his firstcollegiate race, the 60-meter hurdles at Woosteron Feb. 2.The Tigers’ outdoor sea-

son was slated to beginMarch 23. Wittenberg willcompete in two meets atCedarville; one on March30 and the other onApril 20.Riley Shaw was a two-

time State qualifier in thediscus throw, placing thirdin 2011.

Shaw was injured duringthe season last year andthough he qualified to State,he competed in pain, foul-ing on all three of hisattempts.“Still, he made it to

State,” Cox said. “Only 16kids make it to State perevent, so, that was a bighonor for him.“He’s a great athlete and

a great leader,” Cox said.Shaw is now a freshman at

Cleveland State where he ispreparing for the NCAAnational wrestling tournament.Seth Baker, a member of

the class of 2012, was a keysprinter for the Blue Lions.Baker, along with

Nathan Wilson, AntonioRoan and Tye Smith, wonthe SCOL 4 x 200-meterrelayLast year, sophomore

Trevor Mustard placed 11thin the shot put at State in adriving rain.“Our numbers are

down,” Cox said. “We’regoing to be a fairly youngteam. We have a lot offreshmen and sophomores.Every so often your num-bers will be down. It justdepends on the year.”

At the time of the inter-view, it was awfully early inthe process of figuring outwho fits best in whichevent.“We want to match up a

person with an event thatthey will do well,” Cox said.“In the past, I’ve had plentyof guys to put in events. This year, I’m going to havetrouble fielding every event.“But, we’ll do what we

can,” Cox said. “We’re stillgoing to work hard. We’restill going to compete hardand work as a team. We’llwork with the younger kidsto see what they can do best.“Last year was a good

year,” Cox said. “The kidsworked hard. I’m expectingthe same work ethic thisyear. No matter how manykids are on the team, we’restill going to work just ashard.”The SCOL tournament

will be held at Miami TraceHigh School this year. The District meet will

again be held at WashingtonHigh School, followed bythe Regional at Athens HighSchool and the State tourna-ment at Ohio State inColumbus.

The Washington BlueLion tennis team has almostall of its top seven teammembers back from itsSCOL championship sea-son of 2012.First Team, All-SCOL

recipient Luke Meskergraduated in 2012, but fourother first teamers return inDrake Berlin, Derek

Eckstein, Zach Johnsonand Garret Phipps, as wellas a pair of Second Team,All-SCOL players, CarsonFerguson and AustinRobinson.Greg Phipps returns for

his eighth season as the headcoach of the Blue Lions.Last year the Blue Lions

were leading the SCOLpoint-standings headinginto the league tournamentat London High School.

“We only played a fewmatches when the tourna-ment was completelyrained out,” Phipps said.“This year there will be noSCOL tournament. So,everything will be based onregular season play.”Teams garner one point

for each court won inSCOL matches. So, thisyear, the team with themost points when SCOLplay is over will be the

league champion.The coaches will meet

after the regular season isconcluded to vote for Firstand Second Team, All-SCOL honorees, Phippsnoted.Other seniors on last year’s

team were: Jimmy VanDyke,Sukhjit Singh, Adam Cookand Brandon Havens.Last year, Berlin

(sophomore) played firstsingles, Phipps (junior)

was at second singles andJohnson (junior) was thirdsingles.Junior Noah Mesker is

out for the tennis team forthe first time.Carson Ferguson

(junior), Gerritt Mallow(junior) return, along withthe team’s lone senior,Austin Robinson.“We have not had a tour-

nament yet to determine the(playing) order for the startof this season,” Phipps said. The Blue Lions will

have a round robin inter-squad tournament to deter-mine who plays first sin-gles, second singles and ondown the list.McClain has not had a

tennis team since theSCOL reformed.Madison Plains has had

tennis, but not this season. That leaves Miami Trace,

London, Hillsboro, Clinton-Massie and East Clinton asSCOL opponents. The Blue Lions will also

play Chillicothe, a school

that will be joining theSCOL in August of 2013.Other non-league oppo-

nents include Greeneview,Unioto, Teays Valley,Waverly and Circleville.Clinton-Massie was sec-

ond in the league last year, followed by London,Hillsboro and Miami Trace.Dave Shipley is the

assistant coach in his sixthyear.“We stress team,”

Phipps said. “We have con-ditioning for tennis. It is anindividual sport, but, weare a team. When an indi-vidual finishes his match, they stay around until thelast j-v guy finishes.“We won’t have a very

big j-v team this year, because we only have nineplayers,” Phipps said. “Wehad 13 last year. The prob-lem last year was, a lot ofteams didn’t have but sevenor eight players, so, someof our j-v players didn’thave an opponent from theother school.”

Brady Ward, G.W. Wallaceand Blake Baldwin andjuniors John Phillips andBlade Moore.Senior Ryan Thompson

will be the starting catcherand senior Ryan Swigertwill back up at catcher. The same players will

man first base again thisyear: Ward, Phillips andSwigert.Baldwin and Wallace

will play second base, withAustin Schoellkopf at shortstop.Junior Griff Ward and

older brother, Brady, willplay third base. Ryan Dettycan also spell either ofthose players at third.Outfielders include jun-

ior Trevor Haines as wellas seniors Wallace, Detty,Lane Henry, DanielStanton and Moore.Branson Huff will be a

utility player, according toMiller. He can play infieldas well as outfield positionsand Miller says he will be apinch-runner, too.Miller took a look at the

SCOL landscape.

“London is the defend-ing league champ,” Millersaid. “Coach (Jim)Wolverton does a nice job. They always seem to hitthe ball extremely wellagainst us. They’re funda-mentally sound. They don’tmake a lot of mistakes andthey put the ball in play.“Washington is going to

continue to get better,”Miller said. “Coach (Matt)Platt is doing a nice job.“Coach (Brandon)

Streitenberger at McClain, they give us fits every

year,” Miller said.“Hillsboro, I think lost alot, but they have a nicecore of kids coming back.“Clinton-Massie has a

new coach,” Miller said.“They were very younglast year.“East Clinton beat us

last year,” Miller said. “Iknow they had a very solidgroup of seniors, so I don’tknow what to expect.”Kyle McConnaughey is
