SCARBOROUGH ART GALLERYROTUNDA MUSEUMEXPLORE CRAFTLOCAL ADVENTURE

COMMUNITY art DISCOVER LEARN INSPIRE HERITAGE

Scarborough Art Gallery was built in the late 1840s by John Uppleby as a family home. A stunning Italianate villa, it’s one of the finest buildings in Scarborough, set in the beautiful Crescent Gardens in the town centre. It houses a permanent art collection which has been built up over 60 years through gifts, bequests and purchases to reflect the eclectic mix of the community and cultural heritage of Scarborough.

As well as the permanent collection, which is displayed on the ground floor, upstairs at the Gallery you can see the First Floor Exhibitions. We hold four exhibitions a year on the First Floor, organised by the Collections team. They not only give us an opportunity to show off some of the fine collections we look after, but also to display work by local artists and some interesting touring work from around the UK.

WelcomeWhat we do...Scarborough Museums Trust is here to look after and share Scarborough’s heritage, collections and stories.

We actively collect significant objects from around the Borough and employ specialists to look after them. It’s also part of our job to give the public access to the Collections, so we offer over 120 FREE events every year for every age to enjoy.

CollectionsWe are always interested in acquiring objects which tell the stories of the local past and present (see page 13 for our latest project).

If you have something you would like to donate to us to look after for future generations, just fill in the form on the Collections page of our website, or call 01723 384510 – we’d love to hear from you.

Our volunteer programmeHere at SMT we have a very busy volunteer programme, with over 50 local people getting involved. Volunteering is a great way to support a local charity, gain a greater sense of well-being and learn new skills, while meeting like-minded people.

To get involved contact Julie Baxter on 01723 384506 [email protected]

Opened in 1829, this unique circular building is one of the world’s first purpose-built museums. Its design was suggested by William Smith, who became known as the ‘Father of English Geology’ after creating the famous map which charts the strata of the UK.

It’s full of fascinating objects including Gristhorpe Man - a unique Bronze Age skeleton - the Speeton Plesiosaur - a fantastic fossilised marine reptile found near Filey - and the Scarborough’s Lost Dinosaurs display - an exploration of the town’s Jurassic residents.

Community engagement is key to our work at Scarborough Museums Trust.

We make it our mission to find exciting and accessible ways to engage local people with our Collections. In the past year we have partnered with Yorkshire Coast College and Beach Hut Theatre Company to produce a brand new musical – Rock, Rascals and Revolution! – about the life of geologist William Smith. We have also partnered the RNLI in an outdoor exhibition of local children’s artwork, which surrounds the site of the new lifeboat house on Scarborough’s seafront.

Community exhibitionsPop-up museumOur exciting new ‘Pop-up’ museum promises to be a quirky and interactive touring celebration of Scarborough’s rich heritage and the people that make the town special. Designed by visual theatre company Tortoise in a Nutshell with input from the local community, it shows the best bits of Scarborough’s social history. Watch out for it popping up around town from spring 2016!
