The Vance-Granville Community Band will offer two concerts this spring. The band’s annual Mother’s Day Concert will be held on May 8 at the gazebo on the college’s main campus. A Memorial Day concert will be held on May 27 at the Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre in Henderson.

Selected band members also make up the Vanguard Little Big Band, which specializes in music from the Big Band era, and the Vanguard Combo, which consists of VGCC students who have received the college’s music performance scholarships. The Lakeland Singers will hold their spring concert, featuring a special eve-ning of popular and contemporary songs on June 11 at the Lakeland Theatre in Littleton.

At Cherry Hill Plantation in Warren County, Julia Rolwing will perform lie-ders and arias during a concert on April 17, and concert pianist Thomas Otten will perform on May 22. All concerts begin at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and children 12 and under are

Two local chambers of commerce will also add to the local music scene this spring and summer.

The Henderson-Vance County Cham-ber of Commerce will sponsor three “Meet Me In The Street” outdoor concerts. On May 26, The Castaways will perform a free concert in downtown Henderson, followed on July 14 by the Konnection Band. Both performance will be held on Breckenridge Street from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Vendors will be on hand with concession food items and Harris Inc. will provide beverages. A third concert event is planned for Sept. 1.

This year’s Alive After Five events, sponsored by the Granville County Cham-ber of Commerce, will kick off May 12 in Oxford with Jim Quick and The Coastline Band as featured performers. The second event, which will be held in Creedmoor on Aug. 4, will feature The Craig Woolard Band. The Legends of Beach will perform for the last concert of the series on Sept. 22 in Oxford. Each event will be held

from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Chamber member concession vendors will offer a selection of food items for sale, and Harris Inc. will provide beverages.

In addition to this spring and sum-mer’s musical offerings, tickets will also be on sale through May for the 2010-2011 Henderson Community Concert Associa-tion’s concert series that begins Sept. 23. Featured performances this year will include:• “American Spirit,” a rousing 90-minute

song, dance and storytelling journey through parade routes and battlefields, town halls and concert halls.

• “Take Me Home: The Music of John Denver”

• The North Carolina Symphony in per-formance with pianist John Noel

• American Ballet Theatre II in perfor-mance

The Henderson Rec Players, the Granville Little Theatre and the Lakeland Theatre Company are all offering upcoming produc-tions this spring and summer to entertain and delight area residents.

The Henderson Rec Players will present “The King & I” July 14-16 at E.M. Rollins Elementary School’s auditorium. The story deals with the experiences of a British schoolteacher who is hired by the King of Siam as part of his drive to modernize his country. The relationship between the king and Anna is marked by conflict through much of the play, as well as by a love that neither is able to express. The musi-cal premiered on Broadway

on March 29, 1951 and has become a classic. For more information on tickets, con-tact Julie Beichner at (252) 431-6091.

The Granville Little Theatre will stage a produc-tion of “Bye, Bye Birdie” May 5-7 at 7:30 p.m. and on May 7 at 2:30 p.m. at the Oxford City Hall Auditorium. “Bye, Bye Birdie” is a satire on American society, set in 1958. The story was inspired by the phenomenon of popular singer Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the Army in 1957. The rock star charac-ter’s name, “Conrad Birdie,” is word play on the name of Conway Twitty. Twitty is best remembered today for his long career as a country music star, but before that, in

the late 1950s, he was one of Presley’s rock ‘n’ roll rivals.

The original Broadway production was a Tony Award-winning success. It spawned a London produc-tion and several major reviv-als, a sequel, a 1963 film and a 1995 television production.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and $5 for children under 5. Tickets will be available at the door. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. (1:45 p.m. for matinees). The show is recommended for age 13 and up.

Annie Sullivan’s letters and diaries, “The Miracle Worker” tells the story of an “unteach-able” deaf-blind child, Helen Keller, who became world fa-mous for her courage and her intelligence because of the mighty efforts of her teacher. The play is suitable for the entire family, with lots of humor and good lessons for everyone about love, courage, and compassion.

Evening performances on March 25-26, April 1-2 and April 8-9 begin at 8 p.m. School-day matinees will be offered on March 24 and April 7 at 9 a.m. The closing performance on April 10 will be at 2:30 p.m. Opening night dinner will be served on March 25 at 6:30 p.m., with a new reduced price of

This murder-mystery-comedy begins when a new groom who has brought his bride to the boss’ mountain lodge for their honeymoon calls in the local police to investigate her sudden disap-pearance. Enter a woman who insists (over his protests) that she is the missing wife. A priest backs up her story, and then a funny man from the local deli comes calling and now there are two mur-ders to solve!

Preparations are in the works for the next exhibit in the Granville County Historical Society Museum’s Harris Exhibit Hall, located at 1 Museum Lane in Ox-ford.

Pam Thornton, director, is in the process of collect-ing interesting items for “A Journey Thru the 20th Cen-tury,” which will open this spring. The large exhibit room will be divided into 10 rooms, each depicting a decade from 1900-1999 with pieces, pictures, music and other items that define that decade. As visitors walk through each room, they can see the changes made every 10 years in the areas of household, entertainment, education, “fads” of the time, technology, clothing and

other ways which show how Americans have evolved during the last century.

The entry room will now be turned into a country store where drinks and snacks may be purchased.

“We think this will be an interesting and fun exhibit,” Thornton said.

In 2000, the Harris Ex-hibit Hall opened in space that was formerly the city’s freezer locker plant, located adjacent to the old jail (now the Granville History Mu-seum). This larger facility now houses exhibit rooms, offices, a conference room, workshop, archival room, kitchen and rest rooms. The museum is a member of the North Carolina Grassroots Science Collaborative and frequent science hands-on

exhibits can be enjoyed. Other exhibit topics include history, art and culture.

In addition, the Gran-ville History Museum and the gift shop located in the Harris Exhibit Hall will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Beginning with the Native American period through recent history, the story of the county is told through artifacts, murals, printed material, a movie and oral histories. The historical “heroes” of the county are interpreted in “light boxes.” Topics cover agriculture, education, architecture, industry, jail history and military. Hands-on exhibits are enjoyed especially by the young visitor.
