Spring Support of Coal Mill Foundations
Coal mills of all types are causing significant
vibrations in their vicinity, which can lead to
disturbance, damage and subsequently
even to interruption of power plant operation.
Major concern is the damaging effect of
vibrations in the control room with all its
control instrumentation for the power plant
and also for individual instrumentation, con-
trols units and switch gears adjacent the
boiler.
Over the period of the last 30 to 40 years,
GERB developed and introduced an elastic
foundation system for vibration isolation of
coal mills, which is used in nearly all German
power plants, and in the meantime also in
many other power stations throughout the
world.
The spring support enables the utilisation
of much smaller and more compact mill
foundations than the conventional massive
ones previously regarded as necessary.
Static loads are supported by the spring
units, which are equipped with high quality,
fatigue free coil springs. Special velocity
proportional GERB Viscodampers® are
arranged in parallel to the spring system to
minimize the mass of the foundations and
to stabilize the system at the same time.
Some important advantages the GERB
system provides are as follows:
• The mass of mill foundations equipped
with the GERB system is only about 40%
and even less of that of conventional
foundations. Smaller capacity mills with
higher rotating speed may be vibration
isolated even by so called direct spring
support without any foundations.
• Smaller foundations are more economic
and save erection time.
• When the mill foundations separate from
the boiler house building, the erection of
the mill foundations is independent of the
erection of the main building. Mills may
be erected either before or after construc-
tion of the main building, so that mills
may be commissioned earlier.
• The installation of the elastic support
system prevents the transmission of sig-
nificant vibration to boiler and boiler
house. Thus possible damage to boilers,
boiler brickwork, switch gears and control
instrumentation is eliminated.
• The use of correctly designed ela-
stic support systems will result in
lower stresses in the mill compon-
ents i.e. giving increased life, longer
maintenance free periods and
hence higher availability of the po-
wer plant.
• Realignment of the foundation -
system in the event of settlements
is possible. Shimming can be car-
ried out without interruption of mill
operation.
• The GERB system provides effec-
tive protection of the mill against
seismic loads, so that the danger
of earthquake damage to the mills
is minimized.
• The GERB system ensures lower
vibration levels to the benefit of
the personnel in the boiler house,
the laboratory and the control
room.

Strict production methods in the ma-
nufacture of spring units and Visco-
dampers® combined with continuous
quality control during production en-
sures that the lifetime of GERB vibra-
tion isolation systems will be at least
compatible with that of the whole
power plant.
GERB vibration isolation systems are
supplied ready for installation. On
your request, GERB mounting engi-
neers are prepared to do installation
